A Challenger Approaches!

Hi all! As a newcomer to the LD scene, this weekends competition will be my first – pretty much a “trial by fire”.  I’m really exited about the possible themes, especially “Stuff Blowing Up”  :D.  The software I will be using:

  • Language/Engine: C#/XNA
  • Graphics: PyxelEdit
  • Music: MilkyTracker
  • Sound Effects: sfxr

Here’s hoping we all have a great competition!

Steady Progress

I’ve been having a lot of fun with the “Tiny World” theme.  Formulated last night, my idea was to create a bunch of tiny worlds with separate challenges that must be completed to bring them together.  Here’s a screenshot of the first world – it tests your reflexes by making you avoid asteroids as it flies through space.  (Note: the graphics are definitely a WIP – I just needed something quick and dirty to work with)

You can’t see it, but there is also music playing in the background 😀

Moar!

Shattered Universe is coming along very nicely.  I have two of the three challenge worlds done, and about all that remains is the third world and creating some good graphics.  Here are some screens of the game right now:

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ Desert Main Asteroid

Almost Done!

Well, Shattered Universe is feature complete – all that remains is to add sound effects and better graphics.  With 6 hours left, SU is gonna be done in time for submission 😀

Here we go again!

It’s me, TheMightyComp, back for my second LD this weekend.  Last time I did the “Tiny World” theme, and although I had a feature-complete game, design and difficulty were major issues during the revue process.  This time, I intend to focus on developing a single “fun” mechanic with a more minimalistic art/music style, leaving more room for design.

Software I will be using:

C#/XNA

Pixen

Pyxel Edit

cfxr

MilkyTracker

Garageband(?)

Hardware:

2 GHz Intel i7 Macbook Pro (2011)

Casio CDP-120 Digital Piano

Progress Report

Well, my minimalist entry Colorobellum (combination of the Latin words for “color” and “war”) is coming together nicely.  It’s basically an audiovisual experience where projectiles fly at you from both sides in time with the music, which I am composing, playing and recording (NOT synthesizing) on my derpy little piano :P.  Your score ticks up perpetually as the game goes on, and although you can’t die, your rate of point gain decelerates if you get hit by a projectile. So far, I have implemented:

  • Working way to load projectile timings from a text file
  • High Score Saving
  • Menu System
  • Groovy rotation, scaling, and translation effects

The main thing that’s left is to finish the music (I’m about 3/4 done) and actually plug in all the timings.  Here are some screens! (Notice the lovely blue projectile in the second snapshot!)

Beeeeeaaaaaaaauuuuuutiful Music

So, I finally finished the first draft of the sound track for Colorobellum, recorded and composed by me on my trusty Casio CDP-120.  Give it a listen if you so please:

Very nice! It makes me think of Fez or another similarly-styled game, with a very open, innocent tone. You should definitely keep it for re-use in an adventure game or something.

Complete!

Colorbellum is officially done and submitted!   Avoid projectiles that fly at you in time to a non-digitized (for once) score played on a real instrument by yours truly.  With lenient hitboxes, and no way to die (your score just ticks up slower if you get hit) it should be a lot more well-received than my last LD entry.  Give it a try over at
