LD18

First playable :D

I started way too late, but I finally (after 10 hours) got something working that I’m almost okay with.  You can try out the current build at: http://garbos.itu.dk/ludumdare/ (Windows or Mac)

It’s made in Unity and is still a bit buggy. Also you can’t die yet.

very nice !! I love the effects after the characters

My Ludum Dare experience

I’ve participated in a lot of game jams and spend many weekends not sleeping and rushing to get my prototype done. My Ludum Dare experience was completely different.

I started late Saturday and met up with a few friends who was working on their own entry. We had some coffee and started brainstorming. I had already realized that I didn’t have the whole weekend to work on my entry and I had also realized that I usually work together with people doing sound and graphics. This time I had to do it all in less time. This affected my brainstorming process and I came up with some very simple ideas. The one I stuck with was: Avoid homing enemies and make them crash into each other.

Concept draft

Concept draft

I’m a programmer, but I probably ended up spending more time doing sound and graphics. However, at the end of my Saturday I had a playable game. A simple game, but very playable compared to other entries. I showed a lot people the game and got some feedback. I’ve tried to sum it up:

  • What do I do?
  • It’s too hard in the beginning (very classic when you’re the only one who have played it)
  • I don’t feel in control of what’s happening. It seems too random

I used the last day to perfect my intro screen with some better instructions and balance the beginning of the game so the player can learn the basics without panicking!  I spend a lot of time on the “straight targeting” robots (the red bullet like ones) to make it visible that they are targeting you. In the beginning they where big walking robots, but I made them into bullet like robots that pointed in the direction they were moving.

Cause the game mechanics felt kind of almost done and polished (for a 48 hour game) I started improving the visuals with shaking camera, particles, combos and pretty explosions.  I love particles and explosions!

The original concept in my head was about a horde of robots that was crazy in love with this cute little monster and wanted to hug it (which obviously meant hugging it to death), but I couldn’t really express that in the art and sound due to lack of skill so I ended up with the robots just trying to kill the cute monster. However, I kept the title  “Robots <3 Monster” 😀

I really loved the camera shake and the particles !!! :) will look forward to implement that with flash.

Robots <3 Monster art update

I’m going to work on a iPad/iPhone version of my Ludum Dare entry and had a friend help with some art brainstorming. Here are a few drafts. What do you think?

My entry for The October Challenge

Since I finished my LD18 entry: Robots <3 Monster I’ve been working on an Iphone version of the game. I’m getting close to finishing the game and I’ll try to do a few blogposts about the process.

The name has been changed to Explosive Love and here’s the menu screen:

I love those explosions. :-) I gave you a trophy for the explosions in your previous LD game too. They’re just so colorful and purdy. ^__^

nice polish!

Feedback needed!

Hi,

I have a webbuild of the Iphone game I’m working on. It’s pretty simple, but I’m getting close to my deadline and I could really use some feedback on what to focus on.

Play it here: http://garbos.itu.dk/explosivelove/game.html

Its awesome, I’m not sure how to controls will work too well on the iPhone, but it looks good, some of the animation, mainly when walking around is a bit blocky, slow stiff movements, but asides from that it’s good!

I just met the first boss, around about 20,000 points. That seems too high; people who play this game at first don’t have any reason to think there are more than three types of enemies until they reach them. Make at least one “big” enemy appear fairly early, and you’ll get a much higher replay value.

A short intro video for Explosive Love

I’m almost done with the Iphone version of my game Explosive Love and I’ll post some gameplay videos one of the coming days. Here is a short non-public intro short video from the game. You can find an almost up to date webbuild of the game here: http://garbos.itu.dk/explosivelove/game.html Feedback is  appreciated 😀

I didn’t succeed in embedding the youtube video, but you can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBklbC3bToo

I have trouble embedding Youtube videos in here too. It would be helpful for posting timelapses, gameplay videos, and trailers, but I don’t know if the site supports it or how it’s done.

LD#18 game now available for iDevices: Explosive Love

Explosive Love

Explosive Love

I’ve been working on my Ludum Dare 18 game Robots <3 Monster which is now called Explosive Love and was released for ipod/iphone yesterday! You can see a trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y464HJvnk5s&feature=player_embedded and view the appstore page here: http://itunes.apple.com/dk/app/explosive-love/id405025826?mt=8#

However, some people have reported crashed and I’d really want to know which devices/firmwares that have a problem so that I can release a fix. If you want to help, but can’t afford 0.99$ I do have some promocodes.

The Itunes description:

As an attractive monster, you suddenly find yourself surrounded by robots, all madly in love with you. Sadly the feeling is not mutual. Avoid the clingy robots by predicting their movements and luring them into fatal collisions. Collect points and survive as the difficulty ramps up, all to beat the highscore!

An addictive action arcade game filled with love and explosions.

Great work! Game runs without crashes for me. There are a few stutters sometime. It took a while for me to stop avoiding the circle power-up/levels. Sometimes, the hearts are on top of the baddies and I can’t see them.

Explosive Love Updated and me almost participating in LD19

Explosive Love

Explosive Love

I just updated the Iphone version of my LD18 game Explosive Love (aka Robots <3 Monster). It crashed on some devices that didn’t have Apple Game Center, but it’s fixed! If you have an iphone feel free to rate the new version at:  http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/explosive-love/id405025826?mt=8

I’ll enter LD19, but unfortunately I have christmas parties friday and saturday, but I’ll use whatever time I can find.

I’m probably going to use Unity, but depends on the topic. How do people feel about board games?

Unfortunately I don’t have any apple devices so I can’t play your game, but I wish you luck with it, Robots <3 Monster was one of the ones I rated highest at the last event.

While you wait, I jam!

Hi all,

Just wanted to post this small drinking game that I jammed with a friend yesterday. It works best if you are a little drunk and more than 4 players. We have successfully played it with about 10 players.

Play the game here: http://garbos.itu.dk/mjod/ It is called MJÖD and is a drinking game with vikings!

Challenge accepted

I have been waiting for an excuse to finish a jam game that I made at this years No More Sweden Game Jam. Back then it was called Tap Tap RTS I couldn’t come up with a name :P). It’s a super simple and quite colorful one button Rock, Paper, Scissors inspired RTS game for two players. You can play it here: http://timgarbos.dk/TTRTS/ but to be honest, it got horrible instructions, the core mechanics are broken, and you probably wouldn’t get it 😉  However, I believe that it do have some potential :)

It lookse like this:

A month ago or so I spend an evening on rewriteing the core gameplay to work as intended. I also changed the art style and symbolics to something a little more fitting: the units are now Rock, Paper, and Scissors instead of box, triangle, and cirlce. I came up with the working title Hep Hap Hup, it is not really playable yet.

It is made in Unity and I haven’t decided if I should do a Kongregate version or an AppStore release. Any other ideas?

I tried the version you linked to and I didn’t quite understand what was going on, as you promised ^^. But it looks great and with some work it could definitely be a fun game!

Fallling Friends

I never really got to work on my October Challenge game, but today I met up with an old friend and artist. (http://pernillesihm.blogspot.com/) and we decided to do a game with imaginary friends!

It’s running great on the iPad and I’m quite happy with what we managed to do! You can find a web build here: http://timgarbos.dk/FallingFriends/ but the controls aren’t super great on pc.

Any feedback? Otherwise I think that we are pretty much going to submit it to the AppStore tomorrow 😛

A few screenshots:

Falling Friends submitted to AppStore

Woohoo! Yesterday the game was submitted to the AppStore :) Let’s see what happens!

Here’s the description and screenshots that I submitted!

Icon:

Description:

Help Captain Flyp catch his friendly friends who are raining from the sky!

For Flyp to reunite with his friends again, you have to move and rotate his friends to make sure that they land safely on Flyp’s boat.

It can be played as a single player game where you collect as many friends as possible or as a multiplayer game where you take turns. The person who lets a friend fall into the water loses the game.

Can you gather enough friends to have a party without letting any of them fall into the water?

Features:
– Get new friends!
– Can be played at any age!
– Play as one or more players!
– Feel happy with cozy music and hand-drawn art-style!

We recommend playing the game with friends on an iPad. It is simply way more fun!

Santas Sneaky Helper

Saturday evening I made a small christmas game with a friend. It’s far from done and I doubt that it will ever be more than a Saturday evening jam game 😉

Here it is:

Notes: Quite bad level design. No difficult levels. (I will fix that).  You only have 2 clones, but I didn’t add any GUI to show you that 😉

Falling Friends

Tomorrow we’re releasing a small and weird game jammed in one day! Tomorrow we will release a weird trailer and do some more weird stuff.

We could really use some help to do some pre-marketing: http://www.sybogames.com/FallingFriends/friends.html

More stuff tomorrow! I promise weird and fun stuff.

Grandpa’s living room

This is what I jammed with a friend (Pernille Sihm) this weekend. It’s kinda using the theme contrast since it doesn’t have a purpose… Or you could say that it’s just not done yet :) It wasn’t designed for the Ludum Dare theme.

It’s not really a game, just a weird place to explore and play with.  Also I apparently missed the deadline. Stupid time zones.

Play it here: http://timgarbos.dk/farfar/
