That’s a pretty awesome poster!

First Thoughts

Wow 1 day 14 hours…

I’m 8h behind due to the compo starting midnight at my timezone. None the less i have some first Brainstorming thoughts ready. I like to approach those Themes from various angles and pick an interesting aspect. Philosophical and by terms of motivation i wrote down some loose thoughts.

Beeing evil is nothing natural, all evil beeings were once good. Evil and Good is something everything is based on. There are several Motivations to become evil. Betrayal, missunderstanding, manipulation, overambition, deception, megalomania, power, fraud, jealousy and so on. The classic Game-Villian always has a counterpart. Alot of Games, specially the Molyneux Games, use the Theme to put Players in a moral conflict of beeing good or evil. Beeing evil has a lot of charm – money, power, the freedom to do what i want. Beeing evil means that i don’t have to follow any rules.

What also is interesting in many fictions, that the line between good and evil often is blurred. Sometimes you have to do something evil to be good and vice versa. Theres a whole new Theme opening when you think of good and evil in terms of judgement. Who decides whats good and whats evil?

Etymology wise i’ve found that the word villain itself is pretty interesting. And leads to the conclusion that not beeing Knightly implies that you are doing bad thing. And therefore Farmers are bad. Which i found kinda funny when you think of Farmville…

French villains in the 15th century before going to work, receiving their Lord’s Orders.Villain comes from the Anglo-French and Old French vilain, which itself descends from the Late Latin word villanus, meaning “farmhand”,in the sense of someone who is bound to the soil of a villa, which is to say, worked on the equivalent of a plantation in Late Antiquity, in Italy or Gaul.It referred to a person of less than knightly status and so came to mean a person who was not chivalrous. As a result of many unchivalrous acts, such as treachery or rape, being considered villainous in the modern sense of the word, it became used as a term of abuse and eventually took on its modern meaning.

Then there is one thing or sentence that bugs me since i started thinking about the Theme. Which is a Quote from The Dark Knight: “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” This Quote opens a lot of options in terms of Game-Design and elegantly describes the dilemma of beeing someone good in the first place and then becoming evil, even tho you never intended to be the villain.

My next step is to get a playable concept, that uses this Quote as a base. I’m mainly focusing on doing something that could work on mobile and therefore i’ll try something simple with a one-button approach. I’m not sure if this is the right way to do it but we’ll see.

Creating Good and Evil

1 day 8 hours…

My basic concept is fleshed out and i’m trying to implement some gameplay right now! I’ve boiled down my concept to a bare minimum to see how far i can get. Here are some WIP Shots:

Gameloop Complete

1 day 3 hours …

YAY! Making great progress this evening! The Prototype has its complete Game-Loop. Klick and release Game Tokens to match them. Evil + Neutral = Good, Good + Neutral = Evil, Evil + Good = Neutral. Survive as long as you can and avoid Evil “Cells”. If you leave more then 5 Evil Cells your transformation is complete and you become the Villain!

Keep Going!

Finished – Bacteria

4 hours 18 min…

Wow! I’ve made it with 4 hours left.

01

My first Ludum Dare ends with, Graphics, some Sounds and a nice Music snipped made with the great iNudge Tool. I’ve finished everything i wanted and learned a lot about 2D Arrays, which is great as i am no programmer at all! I will write a short Post-Mortem tomorrow.

Meanwhile you should visit my Entry and Play!

Bacteria – Post-Mortem

First and foremost i had a lot of fun this weekend. Learning while you are doing an actual Game or Project is still the best way. I’m a Designer by profession and always wanted to make Games, but had no possibility to get around the coding part of Game-Developement. A year ago i discovered Stencyl. Stencyl’s brilliant visual Programming-Enviroment sucked me in the day i discovered it. I have to admit that without this brilliant Tool i wouldn’t be here making Games. I encourage everyone who is afraid of coding to look into this Tool, even though you won’t avoid digging into Game-Logic and stuff, you will be able to create Games without knowing an actual Coding-Language!

test

What went well

  • i’ve manage to complete my Game (Yay!)
  • my goal was to learn something about 2D-Arrays, which i did
  • i encountered only minor bugs
  • i made a nice music track with iNudge, even though i’m not into music-making at all
  • i worked with Stencyl 3.0 for the first time
  • fun fun fun

What could have been better

  • my Game-Concept isn’t the best around, i would love to do more prototyping on the idea of moving Tokens trough the Game-Grid
  • juiciness of the Game – due to time, i only made 3 real Sprite animations and would love to work on more fun animations
  • Interface – the interface of the Game don’t tell you much about the game, Gameplay help, Tutorial and few more Text-Floater or Feedback would be nice
  • Game-Ballancing: Cells spawn totally random right now, which leads to an unpredictable difficulty curve. Some type of Level-Design would be nice, to have a cool exponential difficulty curve.
  • Interaction: Because i intended the Game to be on a Mobile-Device, the drag an drop system could need some improvement. It’s not always easy to see which bacteria is selected and ready to match.
  • i liked the theme “Fortress” the most 😉

Summary

Making games is the best thing in the world and i will definitely join the next Ludum Dare.

Cheers Arnold

Joining the Compo

1 Day 15 hours…

Woho!

This is my second time and i’m overly excited! Even though the theme is my personal favorite of all time, i’m pretty unhappy with it, because i just recently finished a super minimalistic game. Let’s see how i will approach it. Starting with the obligatory Desk-Photo and my setup:

Graphics: Photoshop/Flash

Code: Stencyl

Music: Sfxr, iNudge.net

Happy Jamming!

Pretty much nothing!

1 day 8 hours…

Wow! Pretty much had no idea at all. Im pretty not into the theme at all right now. So i was thinking to just take 2 minimalistic concepts and mash them together. Pong and Swordfighting. But it didn’t worked out. So now i’m thinking of either dropping out or trying to come up with a pretty minimalistic and super small gameplay idea, to make it in time – from this point anything can happen!

All Systems up again

18 hours 13 mins …

… systems are stable and running again after a short night!

Let’s do this!!!

Game Name

● ■ ▴

…pretty miniml!

CIRCLE SQUARE TRIANGLE

5 hour 52 min …

DONE!

● ■ ▴

Slaped some Garageband-Loops together to finish the Music, definitely some work to be done here … but anyways, i’m finished! It was super fun in the end even with my starting problems i managed to make a pretty decent Game!

I’m looking forward to play your Games!

Good Luck everyone and don’t forget to Vote!

Almost done!

7 hours 43 min…

Almost done! Global Highscore is online. Its anonymous right now, maybe i add a text input after the Jam. Last thing i need to find is a cool free chiptunes/electro beat with which i can complete the Project.

Started

1 day, 13h …

After my last Ludum Dare where i dropped out, due to overcomplicating the Theme, this time i just go for it and try to make a Game. I did some Gamedesign this morning and i have an idea that could be interesting. Here’s the first mockup. As always i’m trying to create something for Mobile.

ui01

I thought about using Unity for the first time, but as my Game is fairly complex i will go with Stencyl because there i know how to quickly do things.

Happy Jam’ing everyone!

Progress

1 day, 8 hours …

Got some good progress. Gameplay seems to work so far. Next up is moving the Units to empty spots and giving the computer some AI, which will be intersting if that works out. My idea is a card fighting game based on some roguelike mechanics and also there is a little bit of memory in it.

You only have one turn to either attack, reveal a card, or move a card. When you reveal a card it will be your unit, stats are generated randomly. You can only attack cards that are next to you, either up, down, left or right. When all cards of one player are gone, you can attack the player directly. I’m pretty much inspired by Hearthstone i guess ;).

Fluid Mind

I’m done.

This time i took the theme very metaphoric which the game shows. It’s a very small puzzle about finding order in chaos and it’s called Fluid Mind.

Check out the game!

Good Luck finishing your games!
