I jumped right into spriting, and immediately came across some trouble. The art looked decent, but it seemed too busy when I tried to pair it with a less active background. Also, with the time it took I couldn’t get around to the rest of the game’s art matching this one sprite. And it didn’t animate very well at all. I scrapped it, and with the second pass found more success.

These are a few of the player’s sprite sheets, and as you can see each one has a small, medium, and large size. This is used during gameplay and puzzles where you change size. I would never have gotten as far with the old style, so for me, it looks minimalistic and clean and perfect for a (one day!) jam. Tomorrow I’ll finish up animations for items and enemies and hope for the best!
