LD17

I will be entering as a virgin, leaving a veteran

This will be my first Ludum Dare, but I hope to learn alot from it.

FYI, this is Finals Week for my school, so its going to be very tricky juggling school work and the 48 hour challenge.

Good luck to everyone!

My workstation- Live webcam with user control!

The school I am at has a live webcam that users can control, and I will be working within its view.

(The one named commons is the one I will be at. First to guess who I am wins an Internet.)

Only a half an hour, anyone care to take side bets as to the theme winner?

Anyone care to start making their predictions on what theme will take this year’s competition? Place your bets ladies and gentlemen!

I am hoping for evolution or ecosystem, but I am guessing Escape will take it.

Escape probably… even though it’s my least favorite.
23. Apr 2010 · 23:36 UTC
I feel like Escape and Outnumbered are going to be the top two, with Escape coming slightly ahead.

background

I am a huge fan of Sid Meier’s Pirates, so I took inspiration from his game. I however am not very good with 2d math, so I decided to wait to do the movement and battles for last, in case I won’t have time.

Almost 12 hours, and a working demo

Most of the features aren’t implemented, but if anyone wants to try it, it is working…

Thanks for the help! I already fixed the Start and travel window issue, but I don’t know enough about your Linux error to even know where to start. As long as its not a gamebreaker, I may just have to permit it to stay…

Greatest/Worse 48 hours?

Can we get a sound off on how everyone enjoyed their LDs? Personally, I had a blast and learned more about programming in the past 48 then the past 2 weeks. If you learned something, or something held you back, state it here!

I learned life is really good about finding things to get in the way of game making. I barely got mine done in time and mine only has 2 levels. :) I had fun competing though.

I learned how to program in inform 7, a natural language for developing interactive fiction. I’ve wanted to learn how to do it for years, since I’ve always want to create a work of interactive fiction. I had spent a few weeks studying it over the past two years or so, but never felt that I understood it enough to do anything.

Probably the most useful 48 hours ive ever had creative-wise

26. Apr 2010 · 01:41 UTC
This was the most productive 48 hours I’ve had in a loooong time, I can’t even think of anything else I want to add to my game. When you have a deadline like that and an excuse to not make all your code pretty and reusable, you can really get a lot done in a short while (though if you have to debug something in that code you’re sorta screwed…).

Same here. I am extremely pleased with the amount of game I squeezed into this time.
26. Apr 2010 · 02:02 UTC
I renewed my ability to figure out traps and donots, just to step into every single of them 😀

I seem to be alergic against the most important rule “keep it simple”. Actually in the end it is really stress to finish something that isn’t even half-baked. Nevertheless and to make it clear, I loved that event like the others. It is so much worth for coming further and next time “I will finish a full game!” (haha, sound familiar ;D ) Grats to everyone who participated (if finished or not),…but now I need sleep!
26. Apr 2010 · 03:27 UTC
I was very frustrated by my lack of inspiration. No game idea for a long time. I felt really depressed at some point and almost gave up. But I continued anyway. And I managed to finish something. Yay, totally worth it.

I started on a really high note- I knew the general idea I wanted to pursue from the outset, and enjoyed brainstorming out all of the various parts the game would have. Unfortunately, what I wanted to do was not really doable in 48 hours. So instead I submitted the tiniest fraction of what I had hoped to do. It was still fun, and I might try to finish the game during the summer.
26. Apr 2010 · 08:04 UTC
I set out to put a new development environment to the test with a basic, well-rounded game. So I played it kind of safe and straightforward, and everything went quite smoothly. The game is actually quite a bit of fun :) I think I’m getting a lot better at game-making….I set up a list of task-time/breaks/sleep estimates at the outset, and for the most part they were dead on.

I learned that 24 hours may be enough for making a game, but surely 48 hours is not enough if you don’t have any ideas for the script and gameplay…

Also, the 48 hour deadline was crucial to force me to stop stalling and learn how to use the GameMaker…
26. Apr 2010 · 11:43 UTC
Um, I learned not to base my game on a completely untried physical simulation if I want to finish. Actually, I don’t mind not finishing because I still had a great time, a really good *think*, and made some new friends.

Productivity-wise, this has been my greatest 48 hours in, like, ever. Getting up at 3:30am to hang out with the folks on IRC, waiting for the theme to be unleashed upon us was quite epic, too, as well as staying up till 4 am this morning to see how many entries would make it to the deadline. Also I made a game which I like and it appears some other folks (atleast 4 I know of) like it as well. That’s always a plus!
26. Apr 2010 · 15:21 UTC
I had a blast. I had a lot of trouble at first narrowing down my ideas and coming up with one that wasn’t too ambitious, and still I managed to pick something a little too big for the compo.

My Entry to the MiniLD

I went for a quick and easy 4 hour game due to time restraints. It is made in the shape and setup for an Iphone, but currently just works on Windows. If anyone is interested in porting it to the Iphone, let me know!

Driving and coding at the same time!

I will be travelling this weekend, up the east coast from Maryland to Maine, and I will be coding the game in transit. My time worked will be sparse, and I don’t expect to make a large game. I do expect that I will have audio in my upcoming jam game, and possibly even netcode!

Using: LOVE Engine

IDE: Notepad + +

Love and what-not

I will be using Lua, the Love Engine, and Notepad ++. I am going to attempt to make a game using solely primitives and particles. No sprites/bitmaps. I got the idea from the Love MMO (http://www.quelsolaar.com/) by Eskil Steenberg. I figure Love Engine = Love MMO right?

Covering all the bases… A game with every theme!

Okay so… Its gonna be a game about building skyscrapers out of bugs. You gotta watch out for the flying birds. You can only build at night in the cover of darkness, because the isolation bugs feel when in hidden depths at night. You must cooperate with the rain, which causes the birds to go into a panic, thus allowing you to clone your bugs and grow your skyscraper. If your lucky, you can trap a bird by covering it with bugs and making it claustrophobic, thus using your enemy as a weapon. When your skyscraper is attacked by birds, your bugs can occasionally cheat death by using a parachute. The game takes place in the 1400s, so parachutes are technology in the wrong time period. Eventually, your bugs will evolve, allowing you to beat the birds at their own game.

You win the game when you reach the double zombie rainbow. Only to realize it was all a dream. This ending will completely destroy any shred of hope the player has of the game having a resolution, creating a non-standard game over.

Anyone care to make another?

I LOVE IT!

Overhead procedurally generated RTS

Ya. The basic concept I am running with is an RTS where each enemy type is based in a material, much like Pokemon or other element based games. Upon defeating enemies, the player can then build weapons based in their material type. Uh, thats about it for now.

Taking a break, showing off some screens

2 screens for the price of one!

2 screens for the price of one!

Two screens attached. So far I have the random map generation system, the player group generation, and enemy type generations completed. Art wise I have completed the first few of the background tiles. I decided to make them look like a board game tile (like Catan). Hopefully that will aid to my lack of art talent.

For those with love in their hearts… and LÖVE on their pcs…

Here is a sample of what I am working on. i don’t feel like packaging it, so if you don’t have Love, go fetch http://love2d.org/

This is a working demo of player movement, map generation, and the menu system. More to come later today.

Wasn’t sure how to reach you but three of us are at ‘Me and Ollies’ on 10 Pleasant St. in Portsmouth, NH. There is a great downstairs community area with AC and wifi! 😀

~150 enemy types, all graphically equal

I wish I was an artist.

I have around 150 different enemy types, but at this point, I am representing them all by circle primitives. The circle size represents their level, the circle color represents their health. It should turn out nicely, but I need to think of a way to show enemy types without throwing text everywhere.

Try to go the World of Warcraft way, make five or six ennemies, and redden them as they go stronger ?

I love you all.

And not in the quirky LÖVE sort of way either.

Seriously, these game jams are alot of fun, and Ludum is a wonderful example of online community presence. Every time I compete in one, I expect some great games, only to be blown away by the sheer magnificence of skill and imagination everyone here possesses. I am proud to count myself as one of you, and will certainly be around for as long as possible.

That is all.

I love you too. (Same rules apply)

The letter *

I will only compete if the theme starts with a certain letter (I will be omitting the letter for its safety)

As usual, I will be using the Love Engine, Gimp, and Notepad ++

November ’11 Mini-LD

I would like to reserve a Mini-LD in November. I added myself to the wiki, but I know its currently being mutilated by those nasty spam-bots. It was empty on the wiki, but I wanted to post here to ensure I get it. I am hosting a local Phoenix game jam in November, and would like to spread that love into the LD community.

LD20

You put your left foot in…

I will be very busy this weekend. However, I am confident that I have built up enough of a game framework in previous LDs to at least compete in the Jam category. On the 30th, myself and a few other regular LD’ers will be spectating/speaking at a local TEDx event. With that said, I will be able to commit at least some of my Sunday, and possibly Monday for a Jam entry. Best of luck to everyone!
