LD23

just created my account

don’t know if i can make an account after the competition has started, but i was turned on by the theme. i’m not likely to finish as i only realistically have 24 hours free to myself. well, here goes nothing.

i’m using multimedia fusion 2

my iphone for graphics and pixelmator for the mac

sounds not sure yet, and prob beepbox for music.

again, here goes nothing. realistically.

wow, this is really happening

I still can’t believe I decided to do this. But here I am, about 3 hours in. Got my engine going strong. Taking a break from that and starting on the main guy’s graphics. We will see how this thing goes. Having fun regardless. Seriously, so. much. fun. :-)))

Wow. So tired.

Super duper tired at this point. But i’m rocking on. I have work tomorrow at 9am so I have to do that. :-( But my game is coming along really well. It’s kind of a light hearted metroidvania, with a cool twist at the end of the game that I don’t want to give away if you play my game.

I was trying to make a flash build, but it didn’t work really well. I kind of jumped into this whole ludumdare thing at the last minute and didn’t plan anything out. I haven’t made a flash game before, so when I tested it with MMF2 i discovered it doesn’t keep the window… :-/ the whole game is based around needing that window, so I hope you all don’t mind playing my game in Windows. I think it’ll be worth it. It’s definitely something I’d like to play myself :-)

Very happy though!

I can’t stop playing these games!

I’m getting lost in these games. I have so much work to do but all I can do it play play play! So many games, so little time!

Post Compo Thoughts – What I have learned

Stick to one or two graphical themes. If you don’t have enough time to make all the graphics you want, then limit yourself so your worlds don’t look empty (like mine)

Don’t assume everybody knows whats going on. Make your rules apparent. And when the rules change, also make that apparent. For instance, I had a point in the game where you get a yellow arrow which was meant to give you the double jump ability, but some people didn’t realize this. I put the blame on my shoulders, I should have told them better. Granted, I made it so you couldn’t leave the room without using the double jump, but I should have said “HEY YOU GOT DOUBLE JUMP NOW!”

Make your games tight. Even now as I go back through my game, I can see where it would have been better if it were a little smaller and tighter.

I’ll have more thoughts as they come.

i’m doing this stuff!

I’m in suckers! This time i’m going to be KISSing it. Keeping it simple stupid.

I’ll be on multimedia fusion again, and it’ll prob be an exe file since I don’t know how to program for shiz.

This time I will have music, which i’ll prob make in logic pro.

Super limited in my time, but we will see what happens! Getting excited. :-)

MY ENTERING ENTRANCE OF THE BEGINING!

It’s brings me to my time for I have to announce here to you that I must come to enter in here with I will be able to tell you that I am going to enter here this competition. Ludum Dare! I want to take a Journey.

Posting!

So, here I am. I am entering. But this time as a Game Jam Game! I am using pieces from my last unfinished Ludumdare game. I have been working on finishing things up.

I’m not much of a person for journaling, so I haven’t been saying much. But yesterday and today I took what I had from my last LD game and fixed everything that was wrong with it. I finished all the graphics. Made all the music. Attempted what I would call a “Tutorial” and have come up with this sort of poetic game that truly comes from my heart.

I’m really excited to share this experiment with you!

Materials and Such As

I used Multimedia Fusion 2 on my PC for the game engine. I did the graphics in Pixelmator and Pixen on my Mac, which I recovered Friday night.

For music I’ve used Logic Pro 7 on my Mac.

Sound effects SFXR.

The java version I will continue to try and get to work, but so far it hasn’t worked. We shall see. But for now it is Windows EXE only.

I always have a hard time remembering which number we are on.

doing it!

I’m doing this thing this weekend.

Doing it all on my Mac for the first time. Here is what I will be using.

Stencyl for the engine. Only just started tinkering with it but I think I will be able to complete some sort of game with it. I’m both excited and terrified by this, so we will see what happens with it!

Sprite Something for my graphics. It works well between my Mac and my iPad, so I have the option of working from either. When I need a break from sitting in front of my computer, I can jump on the couch and doing some sprites from my iPad. I can even leave the HOUSE and do some graphics if I need to. That’ll be a first.

Logic Pro for my music. That’s right, original music folks. If anything, my music is going to kick bum.

I apologize up front for updates because I’m not really good at that part, but I will try to update once in a while. It’s just like how I always say I should make a journal but I never do because that’s time I’m spending NOT doing something else. Too bad we can’t just  update on twitter, that would be neat. Maybe what i’ll do this time is just keep this window open at all times so I can type in it. How’s that? Sound like a plan? Okay, good.

Peace be with you all. I look forward to Sunday/Monday night when I get to spend a month playing your awesome games! Joy!!!!!

AND SOUNDS!!!!!

forgot about sounds. I’m using bfxr.net

BAH! CHANGING MY ENGINE!

I like what I can do with Stencyl, but I’m not confident that I will be able to complete a game with it at the moment. I’m going back to MMF for this go round, since I know it. Maybe I’ll get the update??

PC is done

Pretty sure I have some sort of virus on my PC. Guess I’m stuck with my Mac. Dang.

Update before bed

I have decided on what my game is about and some of the gameplay. Now i’m just trying to figure out how to implement it with Stencyl. I’m trying to apply my knowledge from Multimedia Fusion, but the process isn’t the same. Tomorrow morning after I make a big breakfast with bacon and waffles, I’ll sit down with my coffee and figure this thing out! Yay :-)

Morning time and such as and the Iraqs

Well I skipped breakfast because I just wanted to jump in and figure out this Stencyl stuff. I’m very encouraged I’ll figure this all out eventually, don’t know if it will be today. I’ve started and stopped a bunch of times. Been reading a lot of stuff on the web and tearing apart different things to see how things react. I’m really enjoying myself though! Don’t think I would have had the motivation to even do this if it weren’t for the competition.

mornign two

Still don’t have anything worth while to show, but i’ve learned a lot about Stencyl. I like it’s logic. It makes a lots of sense to some degree as I’ve started figuring things out. I’m going to work on this one game mechanic i’m trying to get working, and if I can’t do it I’m going to start making art and then come back and build a game out of the mechanics I do have.  I want to give a shout out to Sunrisekingdom on Youtube. His video tutorials have been super helpful and also made me a laugh a ton. It’s like if Timmy from South Park were teaching you how to program games. It was awesome. He is awesome. And he taught me a lot. I also see he has videos for Unity, perhaps I try this next???

Unity is a HUGE step up from Stencyl. You’ll want several months with it before you take it into a game jam.

Competition is over, but I aint done yet!

I have learned SOOOOO much during this LD. I’m very happy with what has come out of it. I’m a little sad my game didn’t get completed yet, but like I said, I have learned a lot. The first day I pretty much spent learning how to use Stencyl. Then today I was able to start DOING something. If I had that whole extra day, I would have done something in time. As it stands, here is a screen shot of what I have so far. I won’t be stopping anytime soon in case you were wondering. It’s called One Armed Miner. The idea is that you play as a miner who falls down a hole and breaks his arm. Because of that, he only has one arm he can use. Since he only has one arm he can use, he can only pick up one thing at a time, whether it be his pick axe, his hammer or his shovel. Each one has a different mechanic and since you can’t hold them both at the same time, puzzles will be designed around that. If i have time tomorrow I might try and get something out for the jam. We will see. Had a BLAST so far. None of this would have happened without this competition. Thanks so much!!!Screen Shot 2013-12-16 at 2.20.58 AM

I’m in!

I’m focusing on having fun this time. The last few times I over thought everything, second guessed at every corner and straight up didn’t finish. But this time, I’m going to just have fun!

Code: I’ll be using Clickteam Fusion 2.5

Music:Don’t know, maybe Logic if I want to do something serious, otherwise one of the many 8bit nes sounding thingys out there.

Sound: Same as music, guess I’ll have to do a little research. Lol.

Art: I’ll probably use Pixelmator on my Mac and Sprite Something on my iPad.

I just bought the HTML 5 exporter for Fusion, so I’d like to try using that for people to play. Otherwise it’ll be an executable, which would stink because people generally don’t wanna do that. :-/

Looking forward to this, and I hope we choose a great theme!! Kisses.
