Live at https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames

I feel like progress has been good, but I know I won't have nearly all the features I'd want done in the next ~6 hours. But this is fine, I planned on doing the Jam anyways! Still don't think I'll get all the features I want, but we'll see!

Planning on Streaming Ludum Dare Games

Hey Everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful jam!

I'll be streaming Ludum Dare games in one hour! (7PM PST)

I like to stream as many games as I can. Last ludum dare I streamed over 140 games! If you submit your game it will be streamed eventually! I do sometimes spend a long time on individual games, so I can't make any promises on when they will be streamed :)

If you want to submit your game to be streamed here's a form: https://tinyurl.com/ursaLD44

Also, if you want to play my submission it's here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/grim-adventures

Streaming more Ludm Dare Games!

Hello Everyone!

Hope you all had a good time making games over the weekend!

I am streaming more Ludum Dare games on https://www.twitch.tv/ursagames

If you want me to stream your game, I have a form here: https://tinyurl.com/ursaLD44

Every game that is submitted on the form will be streamed (unless it is breaking twitch TOS)

I don't do strict time limits on games, so the queue might run slow at times, but there is a spreadsheet that I write down timestamps of when your game was played to help find your game in the video if you miss it on stream!

Also, you can check out my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/grim-adventures

Oh I guess I'm in?

Been pretty busy playing FF7 remake and animal crossing so my prep has been pretty nonexistent, but I will still try my best! I did at least manage to reinstall unity, visual studio code, blender, krita, audacity and aseprite and make sure everything works this time, so I'll be doing better than my last game jam!

I'll be streaming everything at twitch.tv/ursagames if anyone wants to hang out!

Trying something different

I always like to use LDJAM as a learning experience and this time I thought I'd mix things up from all my previous jams.

I decided I'm going to target the JAM and not the Compo and make use of the assets that I've bought from humblebundle.

This is a pretty big departure from my previous jams. I tend to start with everything from scratch and typically end up spending 1/2 a day making and rigging a character model. This always leaves me running out of time to polish and often leaves me with some cool features but lacking game.

Not this time! It feels weird, but I want to get over my reluctance to use stuff off the asset store in general. There's some great packages out there that can save you a lot of time. It's time I start learning to use some of them.

Starting the final stretch... pretty sure my scope creep is going to be an issue with inventory stuff, but progress has been made! Best of luck everyone to the compo and jam!

Ok. 3 2 1.. let's jam!

Decided that learning Unreal was fun in the last jam I did, so I'm going to take the same approach and learn Godot this time around!

Jam Hype!

Going all in this time using Godot! Still newish to the engine, but got a bit of practice leading up to the jam. This time around I'll also have a few friends joining the jam to help out too! I'm excited to see what we can make. Also excited to see what other people make! The new longer format will be interesting to see results from too.

On making mechanics obvious

First of all, this is a * spoiler * for our entry. So if you haven't played Earworm Jam yet, please do so first!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/earworm-jam bullshot640x512.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/50/earworm-jam

With the shameless ad out of the way, we can get to the topic at hand, making your mechanics obvious. For our game, we decided to make one of the main mechanics not so obvious and even somewhat counter intuitive to what the UI is telling you. There are hints as you get combos that getting high combos is a positive thing for the worm that is chasing you. But in being cheeky, I decided to make it RNG on what messages you get and add in a requirement to play some first before they will start having a chance of showing up. There are some really obvious ones that flat out give away that the worm is the one complimenting you on your combo streaks. However, for games jams it's definitely not in the players favor to require multiple playthroughs to discover the mechanic.

That being said, I'm torn on if it was a good idea or not to make our game an anti-rhythm game without explicitly telling the players. The thought of a player discovering the mechanic while playing and having that AHA moment satisfies me greatly. In the end, I think it would have lead to a better player experience if we would have just told the player the mechanic since it's not intuitive and many players never figured it out. At the very least, the hints should have come sooner and been a lot more obvious.

We are in again!

Looking forward to another jam! Using Godot 3.5 again.

Unfortunately I forgot that I scheduled a dentist appointment on Monday, so our Jam will likely be cut short a bit. I think we should be able to still make something in the time we have though! Still feels bad cutting into the time available when working with a team.

Joining Compo!

Been awhile since I did a compo solo run, so excited to see what I can do with Godot!

Also I totally missed that the start time got pushed back an hour from 11 AM PST to noon.
