LD20

So this is my first attemp!

I Never been fan of text based game, I think the major difficulties here are to avoid linearity without losting yourself at writing the plot tree, and creating a great mood.

I will not spoil my plot too much but in few words it will be a: psychotic space polar, with robots, holograms, huge spaceships, zombie ( space zombie ?!!?)  and probably few girls for guys who like to flirt :).

I don’t draw so graphics will be made of  strange “collages”.

I will try to add a fighting system but still don’t know what kind.

My goal is to write quickly the game engine (need to be finished before Tuesday) , then start working hard on the story/graphics/sounds.

English is not my native language so it will be hard for me to write everything in english without a lot of mistakes, so I will probably need somebody to help me to correct grammar 😉

Cheers and good luck all !

Space zombie chicks! Woo hoo!

Don’t worry about perfect English: zombies don’t speak very well so mistakes will be ok! =D

Yeah but I already planed something for zombie speech, but I can’t tell more it’s part of the plot.

Peace, love and lines of code

Ok, miniLD27 was a miserable fail for me due to starting new internship /w lot of work for school /w promise things for people I didn’t had the time to finish!

So new try for me and in order to have a better karma I chose to make a anti-war game.

idea – first screen – engine half-ok – this time i’m in!

puzzlegame about moving blocks to open a cell

16×16 tile screens with 8×8 tiles, lofi-ish.

Sounds similar to what I’m up to! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

old crt simulation

I should work more on the core of the game instead of pseudo-esthetics ideas :)

little question

Is it allowed to update during voting ?

I have a little perfomance update to do, as well as a missing key!

Only game-crashing fixes are allowed and you should link to the original version.

Anything else is forbidden 😛

in fact I uploaded the wrong version for the pc version, web and mac has the missing key not missing ( ‘-‘ )
25. Aug 2011 · 14:58 UTC
That wouldn’t really fix the problem. If people wanted to cheat they could still very easily replace the file wherever they linked it. I’m hosting my game on my own site, so I could have easily updated the zip file if I really wanted to. Unless the games were all uploaded to this site, it will just have to be based on the honor code, which is fine, I don’t think that many people are really trying to cheat the system.

I agree with JoeDev_net: editing your game should be locked out after the deadline, but even that is not enough, as it’s even easier just to change the actual game. I think a disappointingly high number of people are still making changes, and it just makes the whole thing less fun. I don’t have a good solution (unless Ludum Dare wants to pay to host the 1000 games we’ll have next time), but as more and more people who are less cool than previous LD-ers join, it’s going to become a bigger problem.

Incentives? Oh dear, rating even more than 600 entries is going to be a nightmare.
25. Aug 2011 · 19:25 UTC
There are also some really solid arguments against doing anything more to prevent editing after the deadline. I’ve posted links to my game all over the place, and since I host it myself, I plan on replacing that page with an updated version of the game (with a link to the original) after the contest ends. A lot of people are going to have a lot of complaints if they can’t host their own game.

As someone who is suddenly very uncool, apparently, I feel the need to defend myself and maybe put some perspective on things.

THE TINY PIRATE KNOWS MAGIC

Guess what magic power he has ?

Time to go to bed left to do for tomorow= storywriting / fighting system / incorporating audio

TTPKM -Post Mortem-

Post mortem time: ( As you will see English is not my native language, I can add that I’m French, there is probably a lot of syntax error in this :) )

Theme reaction:

I always try to anticipate the theme before knowing it, it’s stronger than me. From the themes proposed in round 5 I knew I wanted to do something “rpg”.

Bim! Tiny world!

First thing came to my mind, I have strong memories of Zelda -The Wind Waker- Especially how the island looked so small when you were far from them and then when you were on it there was ton of things to do! I don’t do 3d, so I went for an old school rpg aiming to have a small island with a ton of things to do, so the idea was at this moment to have a rich life and diversity on the smallest island possible.

First steps, graphics:

I started to draw 10x10px tiles and went into this:

I found that was cute but I I thought that a lot of people, since the theme is “tiny world”, will do small resolution worlds so I wanted something a little different.

I opened my island inside inkscape, set the grid to 1px and start to redraw everything adding some angles and went into this:

I loved the render, I knew that Processing open svg files, big plus I can scale them easily and make the island slowly scale down, that give me some ideas for a story :)

I realised at this time that half a day was spent on gfx, redrawing them under inkscape cost me a lot of time ! I knew that I will not have the time to do characters animation for example so I started to draw waves for the water and makes them moves thru sine movement to turn the visual more “alive”. Then I draw all the character I wanted for my game hoping to have finished the gfx and start coding for real :) I used the same process to draw them, then I added a small shadow to make them more visible on the map since I used the same 10 colors for drawing them.

hero, mother, princess, king, wise, bad tiny pirate knows magic

Coding:

Then I started coding, everything went well quickly but I was a little bit worried of all the other works I had to do this weekend that I wasn’t doing because I decided at the last time to do LD#23. To avoid stress and keep focusing I worked with this patern all saturday afternoon:

1h00 of coding – 0h30 of making music-sound effect – 0h30 on graphic polishing – 1h00 of codi….

Spend the time before sleeping thinking about a stupid story, I went into something big I will not detail here since I didn’t had the time to implement in the final game.

Sunday afternoon, I knew that I saw to big had to make a choice, I knew the game I will upload will not be finished. Had to make choices, I don’t like uploading something that looks unfinished, so I programmed a quick combat system and wrote an anticipated end.

Now I’d like to thanks all people who commented my game, it really warm my heart and makes me want to continue this project!

Play it here if you didn’t :http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-23/?action=preview&uid=4651

When I saw your screen shots earlier they reminded me of graphics made with Commodore 64’s builtin character set. The colors are also very similar. It certainly caught my attention more than regular pixel graphics.

LD25

here is the first step

01

That’s where I am right now, still far from what I have in my mind. I want to make a game where can’t control your impulses of being a villain. You will have to deal with that.

It’s in javascript, with hardcoded sprites, 96x96px low res. Music n sounds will be hardcoded too and might use timbre.js to vibrate.

now the game is 18kB a bit less than 5 hours of work

02Here is where I am so far got the main engine, clouds floatin’ let’s add some people.

In my future game, you will have to find a way to fight against your will of robbery , crime, fight, drugs… let’s add all that.

Timelapse Day 1 31kB

03

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8G-zNHnrmuU

Game is 31kB now, I’m cleaning my noob javascript code tonight.

Hope to release a stable beta tomorow on the morning.

You can now steal but that’s not a game yet.

Goin to party now.

LD25 over real fail

04

I gave up. Not enough confident on my ideas to continue. Plus running into browser compatibility problems. I’m too new to javascript & generally speaking programming to understand and find a solution.

Anyway the prototype is 54kB so you can try it here It will load quickly and seems to run fine under chrome, but not firefox.

there is timelapse of day 1 & 2:

Don’ give up. The game looks awesome. And those visuals…

Did you try to use another renderer?
