So while I am not able to actually join this Dare (From having realized it was this week-end to late and losing yesterday and today to my day-job), I went ahead and at least thought of what I would had attempted on this theme and the more I thought about it, the less I could find something that would had been plausible for me to do in 72h. A Runner game with a shapeshift ability? Too simple. A platformer where you turn into various enemies to kill others? Maybe but the art would had killed me. Then, it hit me…
I was at work and was filling up the water section of the drugstore where I work and was thinking about my other ideas when I drop a water jug and that got me thinking about something else. Or rather, how some other water product would had shattered under such a drop. One that has very interesting mechanic in the concept of a shapeshifting game: Oobleck.
Bleck (Tales of the living Oobleck)
Game Type: Puzzle-/Physics-based Platformer game
Player: The player controls Bleck, a living ball of Oobleck, that must make it out of the lab.
Mechanics: Depending on the level of acceleration imparted to Bleck, he will interact differently:
- At low speed, Bleck deforms and is pushed around by the force. If falling, Bleck squashes and reforms.
- At medium speed, Bleck hardens and can be knocked around by the force acting on him. If falling, Bleck bounces.
- At high speed, Bleck shattered, dying. Bleck then respawns at the last checkpoint encountered.
While I say I won’t do this Jam, I might try to create a prototype tomorrow, depending on how I feel so that I can at least see if my idea would had been feasible in 3 days.
