Second Compo! First Working Submission!!!!

Last Compo I struggled to make a fully functional game! However, this time I was much more prepared. It may not be the coolest thing in the world, but take a crack at my game if you'd like! (It's pretty short, and pretty difficult, but I promise it is beatable!)

I focused a lot on lighting and messing around with some Unity shading stuff. My goal for the next compo is to have a much better idea of how to create good lighting and worlds!

My soul is sold

Ready for Round 3

I may have numerous projects and responsibilities, but for 48 hours 3 times a year, my soul is officially sold to the dare. I'm bout to be wrecked after this process is over. Ah well, such is the cost of 48 hours of delicious game making.

My tools: Unity.

My goals: Make a shader.

My fears: Lol how do I make a game again...

Alright LD40, Hit me with your best shot

(and then please gimme a moment to recover)

What Makes and Breaks a Game?

This weekend I had a lot of responsibilities trying to pull me away from making a game. As such I focused a lot on simple but fun game mechanics, with a minimalistic style. This helped me get further than I was expecting. However, due to some responsibilities I lost most of my Sunday and could only get to the keyboard at 7:30 PM (1.5 hours before submission). However, in that short period of time I added a couple components to my game that pushed the game further than I ever could have hoped.

Earlier in the weekend my friends had suggested that I watch this video: The Art of Screen Shake

I hadn't really thought very much of game feel as a component for a game prototype. I thought of it as the finishing touches, the cherry on the cake, so to speak. But little did I know, that cake was a lie.

Game Feel

In the hour and a half left I managed to add sound effects, particle effects, and screen shake. This was fairly easy to do and really helped to make the game feel so much more full. I was really starting to have doubts about the game simply because it felt dry to play. After adding these small effects the game felt so much more full. The youtube video shows a great progression from before effects to after effects and I highly suggest that people watch it.

In the end, I've learned from this ludum dare that game feel is not an after thought, and while I don't think it will particularly make a game, the lack of it can significantly stunt a game's potential.

Special Thanks to n4tticus, jeremy-ryan, daniel-alhadeff, paul-nadan, nathaniel-tan. They were the friends that pushed me to watch the video.

Ludum Dare 46

When going outside has been cancelled, all I can do is be in.

The plan

2 months ago I looked at the calendar and choose this upcoming weekend as my annual "go outside and get vitamin D" weekend.

The Reality

With that option no longer viable, it's only fitting that I do the next closest thing: Sitting in a room for 48 hours, staring at a screen, with somewhat inadequate sleep and a buttload lot of code. It's just like going outside but the sun is your computer and the only things getting physical activity are your fingers.

Here we go again.

Excited to see all of your creations
