First game jam...

I've arrived just in time, ready to participate in my first game jam. I'm most looking forward to, hopefully, creating my first game from start to finish without just leaving it for 2 odd years and forgetting about it.

Wish me luck.

First LDJAM DONE!

By the skin of my arse I got my game published. hoping it will be able to compete with the rest.

LD 43

Defeated.

Sadly I have been defeated due to poor time management and not being in the right frame of mind to make significant progress on my entry. That is why I won't be submitting for LD43, it is a shame as I had fun with what I did make. In the near future I will likely release a finished version of the game but as it stands it is not up to my standard of quality. Better luck next time I guess.

Finished Brainstorming

Finally Finished brainstorming ideas for each of the themes so that I am ready for whichever theme is picked. The hardest one was probably Color changes everything, purely because I am colour blind :P

First Day Completed.

Completed my first day and am now shattered. I got the player controls, majority of the main mechanics as well as most of the 3d models built and implemented. Tomorrow will be to get Enemy AI working, the rest of the menu systems down as well as work on the audio and optimisations. Will be a bit of a crunch but who says no to a challenge...

Day 2 Done.

Finished my second day of development. Got a lot of the more complex systems in place and working. There is a bug with instantiating objects with NavMeshSurfaces though. Hopefully I will find a solution quickly tomorrow. other than that just a bit of navigation work and sound and then I am done.

Last minute woes.

It's always the case, things coming down to the wire and the most complex system in the game decides to not work. I have been trying to get my Nav mesh surfaces to correctly generate for over 4 hours not and am just not getting anywhere with it. Instead I am just going to have to remove hostiles from the game and settle with what I have got.

Hopefully I can cobble together a semi-decent game with the bits i've got left but this needs to be a lesson for both project management and scope management.

Ludum Dare 50

Finished

And with less than three minutes left on the clock I finally submitted my entry. Have only slept for approx. 8 hours since 8am on saturday, I hope that at least one person likes my game. I am going to go to bed now and sleep till Easter!

Ludum Dare 59

Last second submission

When I way last second I mean it. I had to tools down with approx. 10 seconds left on the timer, but everything is submitted and ready for ratings. Hopefully there are no issues, as I didn't get a chance to fully test. There is so much that I didn't get to implement because of serious personal issues during development(didn't get to really do anything on Sunday), but I definitely will continue my game after the jam. To anyone who plays my game, I hope you have at least a bit of fun and can see what I was trying to do. It's called Robo-Miners, please check it out.

Questions for the community

Hi Everyone, I hope we are all good. Now that the dust has fully settled after LD59, I was hoping to ask a couple of questions to get some general feedback or opinions from people. It's more of a curiosity as personally for me, this jam I produced one of my best games and am continuing development of Robo Miners with the intention of fully releasing it to the public(whatever form that may take). This jam was also the hardest for me as unforeseen personal issues meant I lost a day of development at least, if not more, and had to cut more content than originally planned. anyways, I'm rambling, so let me get to the questions:

  1. The only way that people could play my game was to download an exe to play on Windows, would it have been better if I had created a web version of the game that people could play in browser? If so, would the best place to host it have been itch.io? I played a couple of games during the ratings stage and games that were hosted on ldjam.com were unreliable to get working, so people had itch.io as an alternative. Is this standard?

  2. When I say I made it down to the wire with my game, I mean it. I pressed the submit button with around 5 seconds to spare to qualify for the jam. Because of this, I only managed to make a .exe available to download. Would it be acceptable/in the spirit of the jam, to make subsequent versions available during the ratings phase of the event? Say I had the exe working fine but issues with a web version that meant it would not be available in time. Could I submit the exe initially, then a couple of days later, also make the web version available, even though it would be after the submission window?

  3. I've experimented with several different ways of organising my jam, with varying levels of success, for one reason or another. I was curious on how other people organise their time, I look at some of the games for the jam and especially the Compo and I think to myself with envy and a little jealousy: How? As an extra, people who struggle to sit still and work, be it a short attention span, ADHD, etc. what is your advice?

Apologies if I started to sound rambly, i'm just spewing forth my conscious thoughts based on points I came up with.

I'm grateful for any responses, and for anyone taking the time to actually read this.

Thanks, Lums
