First time and I’m ready

Joining this, My school gives me 2 weeks to make a game but I’m sure I can do good in a even shorter time span. (Although I will get less time because I’m using the school computers)

Gonna make my game with Game Maker: Studio. I have tiny knowledge of Java and C++ but not nearly enough to make a game with.

Will use Game Makers own image editor and Photoshop CS 3

And for sound and music, I’ll just use famitracker and Audacity

Edit:Will also use sfxr, just saw that tool in the tools tabs and it works great.

So, yeah.

(The game you will play as a virus glitch up everything in it)

Day one done

So yeah… I lost a bit of time because the game kinda changed direction 3-4 hours in but I think the newer one is more intresting.

Well is shaping up with a game when you glitch up a poor man’s Super Mario Bros clone, we will see how this ends.

So my game is done

Or rather has been done for 5 hours now.. I gave up in the middle because I couldn’t find motivation to work on it anymore so I just made a quick ending to it… Still that ending contains a goat so it’s not all bad1goat (1)

CORRUPTIONEXE postmortem

Well with my game CORRUPTIONEXE (or CORRUPTEXE whatever you prefer) done for this I guess it’s time for a postmortem.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-25/?action=preview&uid=18652

stuff

I decided to work with Game maker: Studio for this, I’ve used Game Maker 8.1 quite a lot before this and I decided to try Studio because I assumed it was pretty much the same, but those small differences kinda affected the time it took longer time to do some stuff because of the differences.

I started out with no idea at all what to do, I expected “The End of the World” as a theme but because it was the theme I really didn’t want I was caught unprepared idea wise and it took a half hour to start and 4 hour later I changed completely direction on it all.

I succeeded in making a decent tune for it and even if I haven’t used sfxr I got some ok sounds from it.

In the first day I got the title screens done and I was ready to make some levels

However after finishing a level I pretty much burned out, I got sick of the idea and hated working on it and couldn’t come up with much more to do with it so I added the stuff I scrapped at the start in the game and a goat and called it a ending.

The Good:

Creative Idea, I haven’t seen any other with the same/similar idea at this ludum dare (yet)

Visuals are pretty good considering how bad I am at

The bad:

The ending, It’s just plain weird….

No real gameplay, I couldn’t get an idea what to do to challenge the player and still make sense with the game logic so I just let the player go nuts instead

Well, next Ludum dare I make sure to start with the gameplay first because that’s what I really find fun to work on in games.

Post Mortem CORRUPTIONEXE pt2

Well, the results are in and it went like this

#28 Innovation 3.98

#103 Theme 3.80

#170 Mood 3.19

#181 Humor 3.09

#188 Audio 2.96

#200 Overall 3.29

#202 Graphics 3.40

#356 Fun 2.86

Innovation: Holy crap that went well, and I can see why. It’s a pretty off the wall concept and it stranded out among the crowd and I can see why I got so high, Heck if I didn’t gave up in the middle of it I’d probably got in top 25 (unless the mindfuck ending gave it a higher score)

Theme: Gotta say, I really didn’t really like the theme so it’s kinda odd to do well on it, it made me go a hour just thinking a decent idea and changing it after 5 hours of working on it so yeah..

Mood: The direction was kinda weird but I guess it’s added to the mood for some and killed it for some.

Humor: When I was thinking of the two categories I thought this and Innovation. I was thinking this of a kinda silly funny idea but I guess the ways stuff got corrupted and well…. I was kinda idea dry when I was thinking of stuff to happen, still not bad score.

Audio: Audio isn’t something that I’ve done in every game I’ve made so far so I’m not too used to it, still  it went well. I saw sfxr in the tools sections and decided to try it out for the comp and while I should have gotten more used to it beforehand it went okey. I got a pretty catchy melody as the “Flowerz” main theme and I feel like that is the reason it got somewhat high.

Overall: Surprisingly nice score considering how the game wasn’t too fun, I was not sure how high i would get on this and decided to be happy if I was above the avrage be really happy and I got better than 75% and that’s a muuch better than I expected.

Graphics: Gotta say Graphics had the toughest competition, it was my #3 highest score wise yet among the thing I got the lowest rating, Still I’ve never seen myself as good at grapics so I’m glad that the effort I put on this went well.

Fun: Expected to get worst on this and… yup. I never came up with any good idea to make it more fun and heck it even was one of the main reason I rushed the game. still I got over the average so it wasn’t as bad as I expected.

Anyways I’d definitely join the next Ludum Dare. It was a nice learning experience and I finally succeeded to upload a game, something I have troble with considering I’m kinda of an perfectionist and is kinda bad at finishing stuff. Thanks to this I also saw One Game A Month and decided to join it (and join twitter) to improve on myself even further. (If anyone is curious my twitter is https://twitter.com/RealXgor)

Still until the next ludum dare I intend to look at the tools from the tool bar to see if there is anything else that work well/works better than I use right now, also I used Game Maker Studio for the first time for this Ludum dare and it was a huge mistake with all the differences I didn’t know of and I’d definitely try to learn more about it until next time.

If anyone still interested in playing the game click here.

I have a scary thought your heading down the same road as me! :p

Digging my hole deeper

Ooooh boy, I tried to make the lines work better but the more I tried the buggier they became and I don’t know how to fix it anymore. Will work on something else much simpler programming wise unless i find a solution

New game.. Now BED TIME!

New gaem

So here is the new one I been working on, it’s a maze game combined with a ryrthm game. Pretty sure I’ll finish this one~

Well that’s all for today

Well it starting to get more and more finished

I didn't know being a ape was a good idea

Title screen

So here’s a screen of the title screen. Silly name I got when I combined beat and escape but it will have to do.

Anyone experienced with Game Maker: Studio HTML5?

Well, because I wanna make a web version for my game but I have no friggin clue how to do it.

I’ve already made everything in my game GM:S compatible but then I’m stuck…..

Do you have the professional edition? you can’t export to HTML5 with the standard one as far as I know

Back… in 3D!

Well I’ll be joining this LD too however this time I’ll do things slightly different than the first two times because this time I’ve took the time to learn Unity.

While I can’t say I’m a pro I have learned most of the basics and I think I’m good enough to make a game with it.

Anyways, other stuff I’ll be using…

3D models: Blender

2D graphics: Paint.net (I might use something else too…. not sure)

Sound/Music: Audacity, Bfxr and SunVox or lmms.

Humble Beginnings

Beta ScreenShot

Finally got things rolling, I had the idea that you was going to destroy everything in a room in 10 seconds but it didn’t work as well as I hoped so I’m going on a different track now

Wacky…. And now I’m really tired!

Stripes and Stripes

Stripes and Stripes

So here is what I’ve done after a day. Kinda odd game when you have to vacuum clean all the dust on a candy planet each level.

Dust in the Candy Megaverse – Postmortem

Achievement Get: Beaten LD48 3 times!

So I joined LD again this time around with probably my best LD game so far! But as every game it has it’s good and bad sides.

What worked well:

There is nothing quite like it: Soo.. seen any other game when you play as a candy vaccum cleaner where you clean dust on big spheres of lollipops in outer space in another dimension…. I thought so! Having a game stand out among over 2000 games is quite a good thing.

Unity3D gives a lot of advantages:My two last games was made with Game Maker 8.1/Studio but this time took the summer and learned quite a bit about it. So because of it I could easily export to the web and beef up the graphics in a way I couldn’t have done with Game Maker.

The aesthetics, both easy to make and enjoyable: Around like 6 hours in I got the base idea to what would become the end product after 2-3 other ideas but most of the graphics was easy to make. The textures was easy to make, adding space took me barely 10 minutes and I found a great font that worked well with the game . The only thing that took time to make was the vacuum cleaner as I changed around quite a bit until I got the final version.

Easy to learn what to do: When a level only takes 10s to play you need to learn what do to quick and I feel that I achieved that.

Voice acting, quick to do but adds a lot: One thing I had a blast to do was adding voice acting to the game. I added a small countdown with a silly cute voice and so far it seems like the thing that people liked the most of it.

I leaned a lot!: Even if this would have been the worst game ever it would have been worth it because I learned a lot about game design, 3D game design and Unity.

What didn’t work well:

Waaaaaayyyyy to many hours used on stuff not appearing in the final product: This is something I had problem with every LD I’ve joined so far but doesn’t make it less painful. I spend around 4 hours with stuff that didn’t had much to do with the final game and and around half of the rest of that time working with stuff that didn’t end up in the final product.

Hard to control: As the creator I was used to the controls so I didn’t think of it that much. Even when I showed it to my family and they had problem with it I simply brushed it off…. Big mistake as that’s the most common complaint

Making a game based of a sphere gives a button of problem: I had the idea to have a game on a sphere for a while because it seemed easy and seemed really cool. I got right on the cool part but easy…. nah. Placing down everything takes so much more time because you have to rotate everything around the sphere and that made the level design take so much longer time than would otherwise. The visibility was limited so the levels became quite limited and I wanted to add walls but I.. just couldn’t….

Too level based… Yet again: For the last LDs I have made games that relied a lot on having a lot of content instead having clever design that didn’t as much content building… I felt that it was a mistake and didn’t want to do that again…But yet again I did it. At least I felt that was that would work the best with the 10 seconds theme.

Makes some people dizzy/nauseous: Not exactly something that I intended but some have reported that and that’s just… :(

Anyways. For people that haven’t checked it out yet I’d love to see you check down the game. (Link below)
