Remote Bot gameplay video (finally)

Yay, I finally got it covered! I knew that making videos is not an easy process, but I didn't expect it to be such a quest. Youtube denied to keep the original quality, so I was forced to seek other places to host a video.

Anyway, I hope you find it interesting or even helpful, if you are stuck playing Remote Bot. You can also try to beat my time. =)

Enjoy a non-embeded experience of watching videos from dropbox. =)

LD 42

Well, I'm in!

Ludum Dare is coming and I feel ready like never before. Once again I have an exam right before a jam (hate this tradition), so there's not enough time to prepare properly. This means that once again I'll stick to improvisation. It's always so much fun not to be sure where exactly you're going, isn't it? =)

This time I'm collaborating with @komnotmr, so we're possibly using Phaser 2 again with vim for coding like a pro and gimp for pixeling like a newbie. Some sound might appear in the game also, but I have no idea what crazy things we will use (Alda seems pretty good).

Important note: if you happen to be in Novosibirsk during Ludum Dare, consider jamming at The Boiling Point. We're there for the whole weekend, including the night time.

Have a nice jam everyone!

Hey, boxey, will I publish a game today?

...still I'll do my best.

Congrats to all the compo participants, btw! Can't wait to play your games!

I'm done

Tomorrow I will feel potato-ish, but it doesn't matter, because today we released Quicksort!

Go check it out, if you want.

LD 43

I'm in!

Ah, the first ground frost and heavy snow finally came to our city! You all know what it means, right? It's about time for the last winter Ludum Dare.

This one is going to be special for me, because, sadly, my old friend @komnotmr won't be around to participate (he does his military service). So, I have to find the team real quick, before the theme is announced. And I have a plan for it. =)

The tools didn't change: still using vim to write JavaScript code (JS sucks, but everything else I tried is even worse). Still GIMP-ing my way through pixels and using whatever I find to make sound, given there will be enough time for it.

And, thanks to GameDevNSK team, we have a local event again! This means, if somehow you find yourself in Novosibirsk during the jam, you definitely should visit Technopark because that's where the real jammers are jamming from! =D

Have fun! Let's make some games and may the theme be nice! =)

Oh no!

I have only 2 questions on my mind:

  1. Haven't we had enough of this the last time?
  2. Isn't there some sort of duplicate removing system? If there is, it appears to be broken.

Status report

Time: one week before the jam.

Status: feel being able to create a game on any possible theme.

Day 3. Status: AAAAAAAGH!

I didn't post much this time because our local event's schedule was something like "The game must be playable right now!" so we were really busy spawning spagetti-code and struggling to make an MVP. Now there are less pressure and I can spend some time tweaking mechanics and polishing the look. Here's a screenshot of what we got (with a bug on it):

See ya'll on the finish line! And kudos to compo fellas for releasing their games! =)

LD 44

Let's begin!

bear.jpg

What time is it? It's the time for an early bird "I'm in" post!

It will be my 5th LD in a row, so I'm excited and engaged to finish the game and make it the most polished game of mine. I know, I always say it, but this very time I've got a plan.

Several things make the upcoming LD special for me:

  • Siberian Game Jam team is hosting the local event again! It's always so much fun to jam together with the best developers of the city. So if you're planning to jam somewhere around Novosibirsk, head to CityCenter, we're waiting for you.

  • My girlfriend @syudzius decided to join me this time! No more "programmer's art" 'cause the real artist appeared out of the blue and said "heard you're a jammer, I wanna join" (okay, it was slightly different). She's also so thrilled with her first game jam, can't wait to start!

  • My old buddy @komnotmr is still busy with his army stuff and won't be around to generate bright ideas and implement features. =(

Talking about tools, here's what I've got:

  • It's sad to admit, but despite spending nights trying all the weird stuff I could find, including Forth, Haxe, several Lisps, Elixir and even a good old C (no additional characters included), I still prefer to make games in JavaScript. Maybe someday the curse will be broken, but for now I want to concentrate on polishing the game, not building my own tool.

  • Vim still is the best text editor I tried.

  • I have no idea what software will my real artist use to produce Real Art™.

  • I have no idea what software do musicians use to produce sounds, but I've got an Akai Professional LPK25 and I'm definitely using it for the jam. I'm aware that the word "Professional" in the name doesn't make me a composer, but hey, it still has a better interface then any software synth I used.

Let's make some games! :video_game: And may the theme not suck this time (seriously, we can do better than applying "Running out of..." to every single noun on Earth).

The theme always sucks

And if you have any constructive suggestions on dealing with it, consider leaving a comment on GitHub.

Status: placeholder art is up

First of all, the theme REALLY SUCKS!

...but we're getting over it. Here's a screenshot displaying our idea in a nutshell.

Status: 3 a. m., still no game

You know why it's so hard to program card games? Because the screen is too small for all the stuff to fit. Well, at least it looks good enough on FullHD:

Bad thing is that I spend half a day making it resize-proof. Now even if it doesn't fit the screen, it won't break completely. -_-

Status: just started coding

I just hope the gameplay is now readable enough to start coding the actual game.

ShellShark! have got merch

Well, didn't finish post-mortem yet, but look at this!

That's right, if you want a crabby (sharky, prawny or even narwhaly) sticker, you can get it on @syudzius's RedBubble page.

See you on the finish line, folks! =)

Ludum Dare 45

We are in!

Oh, yeah! Ludum Dare is coming!

This time we (@syudzius and I) are here to have as much fun as we can. That's why I won't take any part in theme voting: this process have never been any satisfying. :(

We want to take everything we can from our local LD gathering - Siberian Game Jam. This puts an extra constraint: we have to make a playable game in something like 36 hours. It defenitely is outside of my comfort zone, since I tend to wire everything together in the last 3 hours.

That's why we won't waste this month: it's time to warm up, refresh algorithms in my head, finally compose a tune and wire it together in a little game. Didn't do it before, but the idea seems good to me. :)

As for tools, I'm planning to write some JavaScript in vim. The engine I want to use this time is Kontra. It's a bare-bone engine, so we might need some additional coding beforehand. I don't know what will @syudzius use for visual art, but there's nothing better for music then good old SunVox (at least, I suppose so).

And as always, if you'll suddenly find yourself in Novosibirsk during the jam, you're wellcome to join Siberian Game Jam. We have much fun, tea and constraints. :)

Good luck, everyone! And may the theme not suck! :video_game:

Ludum Dare 46

We're in!

Yeah, no matter how disappointing the theme problem and the fact no one wanna do anything with it are, I'm definitely in for the 7th consecutive Ludum Dare. This time, I teamed up with @syudzius the artist and Slon the brainstorming machine (at least it's what he proudly calls himself :) ). Comparing to the previous 6 LDs, we're about to change our tools a bit. We'll be using:

  • Godot, which were proven to be reliable during Global Game Jam. I will miss my good code-only engines, but the lesson I learnt during LD45 was "if you want to collaborate efficiently, everyone should be able to use the engine".
  • Krita for graphics.
  • Free version of Waveform, which I need to get used to in a week. If I will, there will be some sort of music in our game this time. :)

Sadly, there will be no local gathering this time, but this won't stop us from having fun with our local community through Discord.

Whatever theme will be, remember, it's not mandatory. Just have fun and make a game! :video_game:

One solid idea

So, after some brainstorming we've finally found a really solid idea. It doesn't happen with me often and it's a great feeling. Here's a little sneak pic (pun intended):

Now it's time for a lunch and some coding!
