Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Let's Play Challenge (Vidtaculous Challenge)

Hello everyone!

We're looking for indies to submit their games for a non-profit, let's play video challenge :).

We'll be advertising the challenge bringing lots of new players to all who sponsor this charitable event.

The challenge participants (mostly Youtubers) would make a video about your game and upload it our website. The best video uploaded during the challenge will win a cash prize.

All submitted games and their studios will be displayed prominently on our website for all participants to see. You'll also gain lots of new publicity for your game (maybe even some sales)

We're currently only looking for 44 more games before we start the challenge.

It's only $50 to submit a game, and you'll be helping us to raise money for Action Against Hunger charity which fights to help save children's lives and end hunger.

Interested in submitting a game or two? Just sign up below and we'll add your games into the challenge.

Thank you and hope to see your games in the challenge!

I'm in, here are my suggestions:

Nostalgia Goggles

This is just an idea I had for my own game jam involving remaking classics, but without that context I think this allows for many unrestrictive interpretation. Maybe it's literal instead of a figure of speech?

Your tools are your friends

I was originally thinking of a game where your weapon is a sentient fireball who you have to look after, but I weapons are inclusive as tools, and this means it doesn't even need to be a game involving fighting.

From here to there

Could be interpreted as a call to adventure, alternative modes of transportation, even some sort of sports game. I think this is my favorite suggestions, just because of how open it is.

My suggestions

You are the enemy

Winning makes it harder

Make way

Are they good?

Can't wait for LD48? The 11th Alakajam is on February 26th!

Clipboard01.png

The next Alakajam! week-end will be held on February 26-28, and the theme selection phase is already ongoing. If you've never heard of the jam, the schedule is as follows:

  • The two weeks prior to the jam are dedicated to an original 2-step voting system (Week 1 = submission/voting, Week 2 = shortlist ranking)
  • The jam itself lasts 48 hours both for solo & team entrants, and launches during a livestream at 7pm UTC (Europe-friendly times). An underrated unranked category also lets you have a relaxed approach to jamming: you can work on a long-term project of yours while still taking part in the karma/coolness system to get valuable feedback.
  • Two weeks of community voting then take place until the winners are crowned :crown:

Feel free to check out the results from our previous jams to get a feel for how things are run. We hope to see you there

my suggestions
I was not very well inspired, but at least I suggested something (unlike previous LD )

18 years ago, i started making games

Today, i'm super hyped to release my first game, based on our Ludum Dare 44 entry Fluffensnuff. Please check it out if you enjoy challenging puzzle games.

Thank you, ludum daring people! I feel like participating in Ludum Dare was a really key to learn how to finish and polish games properly. In 2017 i joined my first Ludum Dare with a really crappy but kind of interesting game Membrum. I learned so much after that - after all, i didn't manage to release something in the 15 years before that. So, my deep thanks to you guys! Your feedback and positive, creative spirit is simply amazing.

PS: Does anyone remember Blitz Basic? :D

Replaced one of my suggestions

I replaced “Musicians” with “No In-Game Text Allowed”. I figured this would be challenging, trying to get gameplay elements, story, and other information across only through images or symbols.

Tips for good theme suggestions

Hello jammers, I've been participating in Ludum Dare for a few years now and after going through many voting rounds and culling thousands of themes I think I have some useful tips to help reduce the amount of poor theme suggestions that will inevitably get culled.

Now, there is no guarantee that your suggestions will get to the final round, or that they will not get culled, but these tips might help you avoid making low-effort themes that make up a large chunk of theme suggestions and waste everyone's time.

Tips that may help you get past the first cull: 1. Spell your suggestions correctly. Misspelled suggestions will get culled. Suggestions with emojis will get culled. 2. Avoid making meme suggestions. "OwO wats dis" and "Amogus" will get culled. 3. Avoid making obscure references or overly complex/nonsense suggestions. "Terpsichorean myrmidon" will get culled, anything with brackets explaining what your suggestion means will get culled. 4. Avoid suggesting previous themes. Nobody wants to redo the same theme again. 5. Avoid suggesting "gimmick" themes. These include suggestions that limit gameplay, such as "3 button controls", "Two colors only", "Non-euclidean space", etc. 6. Avoid suggesting themes that require specific knowledge/skills. Some people/teams can make a multiplayer FPS, while others can only make a visual novel. "3D Platformer" will get culled, "2D FPS" will get culled.

I've also noticed that successful themes typically follow "Capitalize first word only" format (the first word is capitalized but the remaining words are all lowercase). It could be that themes of this format are generally better, or it could be that people prefer this format. This could be a coincidence but I've been noticing it a lot. Unless your theme relies on a specific capitalization, it might be worthwhile to format it this way. "All Capitals" also works for some themes but it's been a while since a theme matched this format.

Bear in mind - these tips are not a result of some thorough data-driven analysis of every theme suggestion ever made and is based purely on my personal experience culling and voting on themes for a few years in a row. This may not apply to older LDJams. Take these suggestions with a grain of salt but do consider at least the most obvious ones - like spelling correctly (I will always cull misspelled suggestions, for example).

If you have your own tips or thoughts on these ones, share them with me and others.

"Allan", my Ludum Dare 36 game soon on Steam

Hello!

I'm Damdoshi, Hanged Bunny Studio's only member. x)

It was almost 5 years ago, before the "Ancien Technology" jam. I was inspired by the C64 version of Thunder Blade and had decided to create "Depth", an engine pixelart/3D engine with raytraced shadows. My failed attempt for LD35 "The infiltrator" was using it (in 64x64 pixels) and... "Allan", for LD36 was using it, and it was nice.

It looked like this at that time: allan_old.jpg http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-36/?action=preview&uid=45212

Of course, I immediately have wished to make a wider game with that concept, but I was working on another game (Melordandek) and had to finish it before starting something else. Today, I still wish to make it, but I thought it would be nice to use that one I already got...

So, in a few days, I'm gonna release a polished and extended version of Allan on Steam. The objective is still the same: reaching the ancien (but precious) technology hidden in the laboratory, but with improved graphics and sounds, more movement, more opponents, additional levels, secrets and 5 settings of difficulty.

My proposed themes are:

Let them fight each other

No attack only send back

Accellerate

I'm not sure about the way I have written the 2nd. x')
