Ludum Dare 48 April 24–27, 2021

Last post for our game

Hey. We screwed up and accidentally forgot to submit ourselves for the graphics catagory. We were eventually able to get it changed, but we're currently sitting under 20 for that. So we'd love you to come and have a play and get us the remaining few votes.

If you haven't played our game, it's a fast pace first person hack'n'slash made by a team of 2 devs.

We've also had a bunch of people doing speedruns, with wild level skips along the way. Feels free to post times if you think you can beat our best

It's been great LD, I look forward to seeing you all again in a few months! Woo :D

Does Player fish for children or is a fishy child being kiddied by deep ends?

[ardskapedevkitchenlog_3]

To save them all and light the tree

The lanterns shine on merrily

The 7th one spreads fins to fly

With all of them

Or some have died.

Though with a deeper jump for heaven

The Player mumbles

“We are Seven”.

ardskape_1.jpg

ARDSKAPE here.

Two artists with no drugs but unsealed doors of perception.

First dare JAM. Not even morally prepared.

Here for the final take on what’s beyond the 7 DEEPS game and why we can cross plenty of ideas, but not this one.

It’s looped, but there’s a flying window.

Face the mirror. F(ace) yourself.

Day_3. The morning started late, when most people were already in their cubes. Personally I had some script for the kid show going on, but this time LD was the priority (and aye, the kid's script also went out fine).

This day was the refinement of ideas and presenting them within Unity. The most artwork was done, so basically we had to put it all together in one piece and make it work.

The idea of loops was in the game script already. So I just connected the dots, making 4 possible loops, with 3 of them redirecting you from different scenes to the beginning, and 1 central with mostly a moral wordplay compensation, to let you better understand the attitude of the white door (white-ish background) and the One who turned back on his… fishes.

We had no time to implement the actual choose+click&drag mechanics (candy or feather), in spite we added timed choices that would make you think faster, therefore creating suspense in your mind with the fewest options possible.

We also decided to lose the colours. Firsthand, the idea was that lanterns (paper/chinese ones, which also corresponds to final flying) were RGB related, but it seemed more complicated than it needed to be. So we went with numbers, and the colour choices in game got to bear more of a traffic light meaning, starting with choosing Red (deep - in danger) to get further.

Some choices give you references on H. Ellison's "I have no mouth and I must scream", Monkey Island (and the hunt for infamous Big Whoop as a metaphor on whatever is luring the children/fishes deeper), "Doors of Perception" by A. Huxley (with a hint to W. Blake's "Songs of..." poetry).

We wanted to reveal the lore closer to the end. Right after mentioning the nearby existence of some kind of Lovecraftian Deep Ones. All three endings are actually telling a single whole story from different angles, and the full understanding of this Story is yet to be revealed in the expanded and upgraded, deepened recomputing of our game.

The final art, however weird, is connected to the lore (presented in most of our projects) on some radio sound/noise that cleans and equalizes the universal frequencies (a similarity to pink noise here).

19.jpg

Door/window/mirror concept is related to a feeling of how one soul/man could dive in pitch black night as passing through the glowing frames (the only lead, not to get deep-devoured). With some "stranger things" happening along with a possible psychic intelligence, or scrying (the act of magic convolution through spreading water over a mirror).

Which is why our slogan is: ARDSKAPE. Mind scrying game experience.

Thank you for playing, criticism, suggestions, insights. This jam has had a huge meaning for us, as a newly wed team.

Follow us, if you wish. Or remember, at least.

There'll be more deep scrying experiences.

Time is running out, check out my game!

Have you ever wanted to play a fast paced shoot ‘em up mixed with territory control? Yes? Have I got a game for you then!

Please check out my game Light 'em Up where you descent into the underground laboratory to clean it up from demons and restore power from the generator.

Develop electrical infrastructure, place lamps to guide for way and turrets to protect your territory. Keep demons from invading the lab and bring power back to another level. How deep will you descent?

1 more humor rating needed for 20, please help!

Cover.png Our game 'What Lies Below' only needs 1 more humor rating to get placed in all categories, anybody willing to play and rate our game would be greatly appreciated! You can play and rate the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/what-lies-below

BEHOLD! The End.

Turrim Game Over.gif Only 6 hours left as of this writing. I wish all the very best as this jam comes to a close. There were so many great games this jam! But all good things must come to an end. At least until ludum dare 49!

I had a blast with this jam. Actually created something I'm proud of. People seemed to enjoyed it as well. I particularly enjoyed trying out a new style.

If anyone's interested in giving Turrim one finally try, before it is gone forever...Too much? Too much. Anyways, I had a lot of fun. I hope y'all had a lot of fun. Till next time!

Goodnight and drop mic.

Let's all help people to get their scores tonight!

As much as I'd love to have more feedback on the game I worked on, I think it's in the spirit of the competition to help out others that participated.

There's still quite a bit of games that haven't made the necessary number of ratings...

So let's all go in this edition's game page, select "Danger" on the filter tab and play/rate games that haven't received 20 votes yet!

I think the people that worked hard on those games will appreciate our effort in getting them the scores they deserve!

Happy gaming and good luck to everybody for tonight!

I've released Hellevator on Android. Check it out!!

Some of you guys and the streamers asked if my game could port on to android version. Here you go, have fun. The control is adjusted a little bit for mobile version and drawing is much easier with finger (not mouse). Here's the link to my game: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.TeamBacon.Hellevator HELLO.PNG

Only 2 to 60

C'mon, give a man some happiness. Only 2 and I will be able to sleep. You don't want to make somebody sleepless, would you?

Last chance for a spot on the Leaderboards!

We'll be resetting and archiving the leaderboard when the results are in! Make sure you get a spot to be forever remembered! 🥇

It was fun to see all the competition we've had on the leaderboards, and all the different stragetgies emerging from it.

Animation-highff.gif

Play Debt Collector 💰

The leaderboards will still work afterwards, but with a fresh start! Also, I'll be playing some games in danger now, let's try to safe as many as possible!

Down bad for ratings

Yeah it probably would've been wiser to do this a bit earlier but...

If you're reading this, I'd really really appreciate it if you could leave some feedback for my game. It's pretty short so it shouldn't take too long to get a feel for. I'm planning to continue working on this even after the results come out, so any suggestions or criticism would be super appreciated.

(R4R) I'll play + rate your game if you rate mine! Just leave a comment so I can get to your page. I'm sure there's a lot of people like me reaching to get those last ratings in, so let's help each other out!

We only need a few more ratings!

This was our first jam, and it was very fun! We still need a few more ratings, so it would be very cool if you could check out our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/the-depths-1

Last push! Let's play more games!

It's almost time, people! It's running out! So I'll be playing some last minute games! I'm browsing around, but if you'd like me to give yours a try, do leave me a comment and I'll get to it!!

Also, if you haven't checked it out, it's never too late to play our game, Vast Trivia Of The Void! It's available on Windows, Mac, Linux, Web and Android! :video_game: :whale:

VTOTV GIF 1.gif

I would also like to shoutout @gustavo-doo and co, suggesting you to check their game too, Deep Sea Trip. I still have a screenshot of their playthrough as my desktop background! The mad lads played the whole question repertoire! Amazing!

Feel like playing a short and relaxing digging game?

Then you might like my game, Diggillion: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/diggillion

Also, I just released a minor update to fix a performance bug, so it should be even better now

Disclaimer: I'm not in need of ratings, just feedback, so feel free to skip my game and give some ratings to those who need them :)

Last day to play games!

Want to check out Descend? https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/descend-3

It's playable in a browser. Dig to work towards paying off your debt, and see what you can find along the way!

Some games I liked during these weeks and would like to promote

Hello ! Since these are the last hours to rate games, I'd like to show some games I enjoyed. I'm not necessarily showing games lacking rating, just some I really liked in the jam.

(Note to the pinged creators : if you want me to remove or edit your game presentation from this post, feel free to ask ; I just wanted to promote a bit your games because I particularly enjoyed these.)

Unto the eight by @threeli : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/unto-the-eight

A beautiful looking game set in a bizarre world, cold but far from being lifeless ! Deterministic in its design, the game is enjoyable for many aspect, being some sort of puzzle-exploration game. Might be my favorite entry.

3ca90.gif

Jawbreaker by @arya-s : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/jawbreaker

A story driven game in a delicious mafia-movie atmosphere. The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men... and jawbreakers candies.

RDoCR4.png

Downward Frog by @goggleskitty : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/downward_frog

A very cute game, with beautifully animated pixel art. Somewhat demanding skill, but yet relaxing.

421c5.gif

Gulp! by @goodgamesjames : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/gulp

Weird atmosphere but grossly funny ! This one is very original in its settings.

3c82d.png

Memories.io : a living painting by @namidasai : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/memories-io-a-living-painting

Might be one of my favorite concept from this jam. I think there is something to dig. Also a good "thinking-fuel", as it can be a bit introspective. This one really gave me unique feelings !

3c7f1.gif

Try again by @cryoxe : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/try-again

I liked this one because its creator and I had a similar idea. I believe this game works well better than mine and that you should give it a try, the retro atmosphere, the music and general feelingss are very good !

40612.png

And here it should be enough. I really loved these games, alongside many others. I hope most of these will get a sequel / buffed-up-post-jam version, because I liked a lot their concepts. Thanks to the creators of these games for making these !

Still need a few more votes.

For some reason, we thought there was an extra week of playing + rating, and thought I'd have more time to play/rate games when I came back from vacation. We still need a few more votes on our game: "Plunder of Goblin's Grove"

Bombs.png

It's a fairly quick 3D first-person game, even if it's not fully complete (as most jam games are  ) - if you've got a moment, we'd love to get your feedback!
