Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Shred-A-Bunch! will be published on market! (Hopefully)

After all your kind words and useful feedbacks, I decided to develop this game further and publish it on mobile stores, maybe even on Steam! Here's a garage screen I'm currently working on.

photo1673967403.jpeg

There will be many vehicles and upgrades such as engine, tires, boosters, turrets?!, and even passive boosters such as gaining fuel from each zombie killed. Also different maps and weather conditions are in my mind.

You can still play the jam version and give feedback or suggest features here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/shred-a-bunch

Try out Spaceman Spam's Delivery Service

Over 100 Ratings!

Thank you all for all of the ratings and the amazing feedback to help me make this and future games better

To celebrate Organigrow getting over 100 ratings I have another update to the itch.io web version Play it here

The jam version will remain untouched

Play and rate the original jam version (Here).

opera_W9UnCf1ZBi.jpg

The new update changes:

  • Removed Tool Pickups (more fun to just plan your seed pickup route)
  • Removed Defib chance - all crops need to be defibrillated (until each of the organs has its own mechanics)
  • Harvested Plants rot over time - this reduces the points that organs are worth (creates the need to plan your harvesting)
Balance and tweaks
  • Remove sprint and increased base speed (more accessible to not have to think about this)
  • Increased jump height (make some jumps easier)
  • Make pickups easier to pick up (quickly gathering pickups is now easier)
  • Added some vertex displacement to bushes, leaves and grasses (a little more movement in the scene)
  • Spawn plants based on tile height (means that you can now plant on some of the smaller blocks)

VOD of another day playing games on Twitch!

This LD, I have been having a lot of fun rating/playing games on twitch. It is nice when people show up to talk about their games as I play them, and it is really cool to see other people playing my game live. I'm probably going to do this again this Friday from 11:00 UTC, so feel free to drop by!

Anyway, the games that I played tonight were the following. You can see the VOD here.

Harr vests by @lomby

Harr-Vest.gif

This is a very unique take on the theme. Some people might be miffed by it, but I do enjoy a good pun myself :-) The game is still unfinished, but I think there is a real good idea in here.

Harvesting Hustle by @angryrubberducky

Harvesting-Hustle.gif

Another game with a very unique idea -- you have to grow wheat to feed your sheep, but the more sheep you have, the harder it is to keep them away from the wheat! I loved the concept, and the challenge to balance your flock. The game tends to get a bit slow quickly, though.

Deathless by @demure

Deathless.png

A Typing game! You have to type objects that are collected, and dodge bullets. The connection with the theme is a bit thin, but I do enjoy good typing action.

Doki Doki Ninjin

A 2D platforming homage to Super Mario 2 (US). The pixel art and the music is strong with this one!

DokiDokiNinjin.gif

Formula Grain Prix by @chase-of-bass

FormulaGrain.png

A rare mix of racing game and farming game! This was incredibly fun! You race your harvester, planter, etc, through the racetrack, trying to balance the time limit and doing a through work on the farm. It also has a lot of meta-progression to keep you playing. I really really enjoyed this one!

Hex Yield by @rincs and @andidebob

HexYield.png

A puzzle game - place tiles and find the right combination to create new tiles. Collect points of the combinations found after completing the map. A quiet, contemplative game, but really fun to try and figure out which tiles combine with which other tiles.

Protect your combine!

what are some of your best games so far?

I usually try to play the low ranking games, and give everyone a chance, but since I didn't finish in time in this jam and can't vote, I think it's fair to play purely for fun, so please let me know if there are any super duper fun games out there!

Yamsylvania, available now! Thank you, everyone who has already played & rated!

yamsylvaniasplash.png

Welcome to Yamsylvania!

The backbone of the world’s Yam economy, Yamsylvania has been overrun by a horde of Yampires and Yampire Bats. But the show must go on! You’re a dedicated farmer and you’ve decided you’ll continue to sell yams despite the challenge. Your wife, Yamela, has taken the kids to safety. It’s just you and the yams now. Good luck!

Each time you play, you’ll enter one of three designed levels at random. Sell as many yams as you can before you get overrun. Here's the catch - the yams are also your only defense. Throw yams at the horde to thin it out. Your career stats are available on the main menu.

Note: Not all harvests are created equal. Ripe plots will yield a varying amount of yams.

🕹️ Download or play online at Itch.IO 🕹️

Thank you for taking the time to play my game. Make sure you comment so I can check out your game too! Also feel free leave a comment letting me know what you think, or if you're having any trouble.

Confession Time

I initially was going to leave my game unfinished; just the core mechanics I was able to complete during the jam. It was eating me though, I always run out of time (I know, I should scope smaller).

I decided to continue working on it and switch to the 'Extra' category. I've switched it over now that it's finally finished!

If people are up for reviewing it, I would appreciate any feedback!

A few awesome games from this Ludum Dare

Wow, there are so many awesome games this jam. It's really inspiring to see what creative ideas people can come up with in such a short time! I'm having a lot of fun playing and rating games this time, so I thought it would be nice to share some of the great games I saw so far. I wanted to keep this short so I semi-randomly selected 7 games of the ones I really liked this time. There are tons of other games I really liked but are missing from here, maybe I'll leave them for a follow up post

In any case, I'm sure there are also tons of awesome games I haven't played yet, so please share more recommendations in the comments :)

Desdamona's OST will be out on spotify in a few days

... or probably weeks.

title banner.png

Alongside 15 other tracks I made for a lots of games I worked on in the past 5 years that I did not release, it will have a proper place on streaming platforms. The other tracks are mostly from jam games, and it includes the last time I participated in a Ludum Dare jam, and made some funky music for "Archeodillo".

FmtIZMSXoAQar7Z.png

It will be on my Spotify page (and every other platform) whenever the store accepts it: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2jCQp5TOWhTJHM9M8X857L

Sans titre.png

If you did not play Desdamona yet, consider a try! It's really short, and it only needs a few more votes to have the 20 required reviews: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/desdamona

People of Ludum Dare WAKE UP!

recently i have noticed that my game and some of my friends' games had positive smart balance for 3 days straight and we have gotten exactly 0 ratings. Don't know why, but wake up!

* How to Play *

The game is about movement and dashing. You just need to touch the Idea Bulb to release a word, then grab the word and pu it in the correct location.

Avoid Green Toxic Thought and Loose Dark Memories.

What I learned from this Jam

Make whole game tutorial

Our last game Dung Roller got feedback that it was hard to understand. Well it is game about walking behind to ladybug, then walking to some weird orange bug. Repeat. What there is to understand?

https://youtu.be/vrcLQ6YQOo0 https://codingduck.itch.io/casinodungroller

Well, a lot. Where to stand and how long, at what order, what feedback means you have got information you need, why does table disappear, that holes are hazards, that you can fall of the cliff, that brown bug does nothing, what timer means, why does level roll. All this to understand while trying to avoid mosquitoes.

So yeah, we did not left much time for player to understand the game before we expected them to be able to play it.

With Elonkorjuu we went as far in opposite direction as we could.

There is nothing more in Elonkorjuu than tutorials after tutorials. Game ends where game normally would just start and fun begin. But as there is no text, no lame "press x to jump" -dialogue; it is still enjoyable experience. We just throw player in level and let them figure it all out. Though in very specific order and in very specific scenarios. There is never two new things introduced in level and every now and then there is level with combination of previously learned mechanics that gives player some time to rest and just kill victims.

This format works very well for game jam I think. Idea does not overstay it's welcome, good portion of players will get through the game, and only few will notice that they were cheated. Game does not only hold your hand, it also wipes your butt, brings you food and provides roof over your head. It just does not do this in usual helicopter parenting way of modern AAA-studios.

Blind runs are best feedback

Let's face it, no one is going to put enough time to your game to truly understand it through and through. Also no one but you knows what your game is trying to achieve. So listening verbal feedback is most useful when you use it only to spot potential flaws, not use it as a source for fixes. And even then it might be just feedback giver missing something essential.

But then it comes to this kind of feedback I find superior:

https://youtu.be/Anv1m9BsrME https://youtu.be/n-uzjzKy5UU

We had joy of getting multiple playthrough videos of our game. In addition I also play tested game on friends with different gaming experiences. Tell them nothing, no extra info no one else would get, and watch them stumble through your game. You will come back enlightened.

Some things I gathered there and possible fixes:
  1. Some people won't get mentally past the time limit (disguised as draining blood bag). They will just go stupid mode and never learn game mechanics/learn them very slowly and get frustrated. >> Accessibility option to stop blood draining

  2. Most people struggle to understand light = hurt at first. Well it is novelty feature, and you are expected to die once or twice. But we got some bug reports about it and I saw people die on first light tile way more times I would have expected. I think true issue is that we don't have adequate feedback for taking damage. There is only sound que, and even that can get drowned by music. Also deaf people never got any feedback about they taking damage. >> Implement damage flash

  3. Everyone understands dash. They will get to edge, look back once and then just go for it. At this point of game they probably have also noticed that death sets you back only few seconds, so they are more free to experiment.

  4. Dash itself is wonky. We knew this, it was last minute bug fixes that made it worse. Let's move on.

  5. It's too easy to kill yellow enemies first time you encounter them. You don't have to learn how they work, let alone how their movement works (Grandpa turns always right, grandma turns 180 degrees around). Result is struggle on following levels and rage quits. Well, it was last level I made half a hour before deadline, so it is not exactly well polished. >> Do better next time

  6. Everybody finds level 10 (9.txt) easier than me. I don't know, even those who otherwise can barely play the game beats me on it. >> Scrap that level and never let anyone know it existed to keep face.

  7. Game is too long. We calculated it will take about 5 to 10 minutes to beat the game by inexperienced player. Instead it takes 15-25+. This is bit too much, annoyance grows on last levels and barely anyone can concentrate anymore. >> We will implement shorter episodes (about 7 levels) in post jam.

Everybody is illiterate

Näyttökuva (2738).png

...when it comes to playing jam games. So putting your controls in main menu is next to no use.

Yeah I understand this phenomenon, I'm not either too invested of playing something I have never heard of. Usually I just hop in without reading anything. Then I struggle and swear and go back to itch page to get control list.

So put your controls in game.

Make them big, make them understandable. Put only essentials in first level, everything else is too much and player will skip them. Then less important ones like mute music and sensitivity options could go to second or third level. Give them only when player have got their first impression they are so badly after. Then they have calmed down and can read again.

Infinite mode in the Potager

It was the first time I actually finish any game project !!

Test the game

The gameplay is quite simple, you shoot you kill, you miss you're on cooldown. You get swarmed by rotten vegetables, and it's your duty to protect your potager (veg garden)

Because of the different pattern of waves, it gets really difficult !!! Please go try until the boss phase 2 for the whole experience.

Press R for infinite mode in the title screen !

Still replaying my game from time to time :
