Ludum Dare 52 January 6–9, 2023

Streaming Ludum Dare Day 3, a

Tonight I played some very amazing games on stream. Here is the vod:

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1709042207

The games I've played today are:

@meep -- Water under the bridge

Super cute Pico-8 roguelike -- I had a lot of fun figuring out how the enemies work in this one.

penguin.png

@ekaktusz, @Zahkros, @bartalomew -- Ursa Maior

Another game from the Pico-8 gang -- This one is a fun story with a weird twist!

ursamaior.gif

@xellaya, @ddrkirbyisq -- A Day in the life of Death

Oh my! This is possibly the best LD52 game from those I've played so far, and I don't see other games getting over it. It is just too delightful to play!

adayindeath.png

@fancyreckless -- Deck of Plants

Very tight deck building game, with surprising depth in it! (could have a bit of a faster pace, but definitely worth playing as it is right now).

deckofcards.gif

@haayaargh, @sparklingsushi, @m-kusy, @littlemaybee, @hexstart -- Hiversters

This is a very innovative game: An RTS where you control bugs by leaving pheromone on the level. A big rough on the edges, but definitely worth checking for the original idea.

hivester.jpg

@osh-studio -- Oyster Odyssey

Avenge your father, killed by the big oyster!

This is one of those: "Get as far as you can, upgrade, get farther, repeat!" -- very decently done, reminds me of the golden age of flash games! After you get the first few speed up updates, it gets really fun! Also, a very "Flash-era" sense of humor too!

oister.png

@matank -- The night harvest

Final game is a neat "stealth" game -- you are a rabbit (?) trying to steal crops without the farmers catching you.

Thank you everyone for recommending games! I hope I can get time to stream a few more this week.

Accessibility for Colour Blind

One of the up and downsides of such a minimal graphics style is that it is easy and cheap to just throw there accent colours to differentiate things from each other. In Elonkorjuu it was all that separates victim from enemy for example. And that is fine as long as you can see all the colours of spectrum. I noticed that while LD52 version of game is playable for every type of colour blindess there is (health bar maybe bit hard to see though) apart from monochromatism, updated character roster of post jam smudges lines between different types

It seems for example red-green colour blind Ghost (White) will be indistinguishable from Victim (Cyan), very fatal error to do in game. Top is regular palette, bottom is simulated Protan.

ProtanNoGrade.png

But as it is so simplistic colour scheme, I think we will be able to create easy colour blind mode with "Colour Look Up Table". Just one click bool to enable colour grading. I designed palette that should works for everyone. Might not be most visually pleasing, but it seems to do the job. Optimal would be to let user decide all colours, but I think this is good enough for such a small game.

Top is Regular, Second row is colour graded colour blind mode and rest are simulations of what c.blind mode will be look like with different kinds of colour visions.

Making the game better!

Hello! My game Brewster was a really fun and challenging experience to make. Unfortunately due to time running out, i scraped many of my original ideas and even though i feel like my game is semi-completed, it got me very inspired to continue making some more, maybe a sequel or an extended/updated version of this game, like a definitive edition later in the future!

Thanks for playing Underworld Management!!

Thank you to everyone for participating in this ludum dare and also for playing and rating my game, Underworld Management!

Every time I participate in ludum dare I try to push myself to try new approaches to game design and development. This time my focus was on intuitive gameplay and tutorialization. I think I managed to create a game that can be picked up by anyone and was able to dabble my toes in to some light tutorialization, something that I have never attempted before.

This time, I also tried a new art style. Heavily borrowing from games like Don't Starve and Cult of the Lamb I think it turned out great:

UnderworldMGMT_Screen 1 (2).png

Pairing a hand-drawn style with 2D billboards in a 3D world - it was pretty freeing to step outside of the pixel art and 3d-modeling realms, though it took a while to really nail down the process. I could further improve this process with the 2D animation package and 2D bone-based animations.

Unity has some weird workarounds to get the look I was going for. Shadows for sprites required checking boxes in debug mode and writing a special shader. Using 2D physics forced me onto an x/y grid, which was difficult to navigate in-editor. In hindsight I think I would have started with a 3D URP project and 3D physics, instead of sprites and 2D physics.

All in all, I think this was a great project that really taught me some great new strategies for future projects and future ludum dare events. I hope that you will take the time to try it out and give me some feedback!

Thanks again for a wonderful Ludum Dare!!
