Creating Adaptive Music in The Time Traveler's Garden

https://youtu.be/bu3SDMLRP88

Something that I'm particularly proud of in our game is the music. Which is a little bit funny, because I honestly didn't think we'd be able to implement music at all, having no dedicated audio people on the team.

Even though I didn't think music was going to happen, I did have some ideas in the back of my mind throughout the jam. But my role was artist, and there was no shortage of 3D-modeling and animating to do.

Music in the eleventh hour

For some context, our game takes place in two time periods: the present time and the apocalyptic future. Originally, I thought about having a happy-go-lucky italian kitchen kinda tune playing in the present and then some sort of darker, intense, distorted, heavy-metal-esque version of the same tune playing in the future. By the time we were just 2 hours away from the deadline, I decided to take a stab at some music.

Pivoting for time

If I was going to have any hope of creating 2 tracks in 2 hours, I knew I'd have to pivot a bit. Rather than going with the sort of italian kitchen vibe, I decided to go with a ukulele-focused track, since I have a plugin that allows me to use a strumming mode where you can essentially just have a strumming pattern in the piano roll by alternating between 2 keys on the piano with the right hand and then have having chord changes assigned to keys in the left hand. So I went with a sort of kickstarter-music type tune with a simple glockenspiel melody, a shaker, and a tambourine.

Dead simple, really silly. This would be the music that plays in the present time period.

Last minute addition

People who know me well know that I'm a chronic whistler. It's just my way of connecting with music. So I decided to run downstairs to a quiet room and record a whistling track of the melody to play in unison with the glockenspiel. And with that, the music for the present time was complete!

ld52 logic pro.png Here's what it looks like in Logic Pro with a single repeat

But even this simple 24-bar loop took me an entire hour, so with just one hour left, I knew didn't have time to pull off anything substantial for a post-apocalyptic version of the track and still have time to implement it before the deadline.

Then I had an epiphany. I could just isolate the whistling track and then apply a gratuitous amount of reverb for a really ominous, creepy vibe. Combining that with the low frequency hum that our programmer Dan had already implemented into the sound design of the future environment, it really came together into a somewhat-polished package! Obviously the music is nothing to write home about, but the implementation far exceeds my initial expectations of what I thought we'd accomplish.

Takeaways

In hindsight, I think it would've been preferable for us to have prioritized sound a lot earlier in the process. Our game could really do with some more audio feedback particularly in the combat department. But sometimes dire circumstances lead to clever solutions.

You can hear more of the music by playing The Time Traveler's Garden!

Too busy for streams :(

Hello there !

ScreenShot.PNG

Unfortunately, this edition of LD came at a bad timing (new job) for live reviews on my Twitch channel. But I do want to play your games off stream! In fact, I need a couple of ratings for my own game as well. Feel free to leave a comment on my game's page (or here, all the same), and I'll play and rate your game ! I have no idea when streams will resume but if it is still LD season and you want me to play the game on stream, I will... Either way, I hope you enjoy : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/mow-rider

A Walk in Nature - Peacefully walk in the woods & harvest flowers and minerals

I managed to work Saturday and Sunday in the game, fully, but then I had to travel Monday morning, coming back only Wednesday. But then worked a little bit more on it today, but unfortunately I lost steam, so I won't be finishing it.

So it's a bit unfinished with no UI and no objectives (the pickups currently serve no purpose).

BUT the world map, sounds, music and main mechanics are implemented (pickup, etc), so at least you can take a short walk and relax with the music and sound effects in the game woods :)

PS: I tried to do N64-like visuals. All the visuals are ALL MY OWN textures from photos of some of my trips and walks in the woods.

I have experimented with unity's physics 'thoroughly' for the first time. So I would really appreciate feedback and suggestions.

Oh, darn those sticking collisions...

Do you wanna Grow a Carrot?

Grow a carrot is a game... where you grow a carrot on your phone! The twist? It's real time! You can plant your carrot now, come back every other week to see if your carrot is growing and in two or three months, come back again to harvest it!

Post-Jam Goblo

Our team created the first post-jam version of Goblo The Harvester for both Windows and Linux.

We have 3 essential changes in this build:

  1. Improved camera controls

  2. Changed level order in the HUB

  3. Added hint to the exit near the start point

Thank everyone for your feedback, especially our brave Ludum Dare streamers @Pomo (Click On Fish), @elysiagriffin (No game this time), @togis (Cattle Juice).

AI generated, Human directed

For my first 2D Jam game, I decided to leverage AI generated art.

Does it mean that I just prompted what I wanted in an art generator and that was it?

Of course not! I started from several initial options, picked the ones I liked the most, used GIMP to select the parts that I wanted and then run through the AI again for refining. Here's for example the steps that took me to create the frames for the monsters:

Rinse and repeat for all the assets needed for the game ;)

Don't miss the opportunity to try it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/harvey-the-harvester

It's time for some crunchy harvest puzzles

Hello from germany :v: Check and rate our entry! It's a logic puzzle game.

You have to basically solve the traveling salesman problem :stuckouttonguewinkingeye:

A job that is debatably well done

Well I didn’t think I could pull it off this time with how busy I’ve been lately, but I managed to make a Ludum Dare game for the jam. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a really hard and fast-paced hack ‘n’ slash called Reaper, where you fight creepers that can replicate similar copies of themselves, and drop health and power-ups.

Its release was down to the wire, with less than an hour before the deadline before I submitted it. And it was a rough start. Creepers were so buggy, they wouldn’t even replicate themselves at all like they were supposed to. I had also just grabbed the code for displaying score from another game, but I forgot to code pretty much everything else for it. And a lot of power-ups weren’t working correctly or at all.

Version 1.0.2 fixes all the major bugs I could find. Also, since 1.0.2, your high score is saved after a game over, but it’s not displayed anywhere so I still need to add that. I had just run out of time and couldn’t get to it.

Honestly, though, I really like this game. It was the perfect chance for me to put together some vague ideas that have been bouncing around my brain for years, and it’s also just really fun for me. It’s ridiculously hard. I really don’t try to make super hard games all the time, it just kinda happens. It was even harder at first because the player’s invincibility frames didn’t work, and I had to fix that. If anybody wants an easy mode, I could make one.

This was also a chance for me to make a remix of a theme that I’ve been wanting to develop further. Way back when I made Spaceblast, I wrote a song called Robot Alien Invasion, and it was one of those songs that was accidentally actually pretty good. It’s perfect for Reaper’s theme, but it only had one verse, just repeating itself throughout the song, and while I think that does work for it, it still wasn’t a complete song. I’m amazed that I managed to make what I feel is a big improvement in just a weekend.

Other than displaying high scores, Reaper is pretty much done. Now with Pixel Day less than two weeks away, I better get cracking on my next game because I just can’t help myself. This idea is just too good.

Rollin'

We created a sandbox game for PC about a hedgehog. Our inspiration was Katamari Damacy and all of the cute platformers back from our childhood. Rollinem1.gif The player’s goal is to roll around and collect food for yourself. With what you collect, you can buy different upgrades. After a while, the hedgehog turns into a food-collecting machine:-) Rollin/em2.gif Come play and check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/52/rollin
