I created GATT: "Godot Autotile Texture Templater" to make Godot tile art easier

Farming on a grid-like system has been a common gameplay mechanic for this jam and our own game, Calorie Crunch, used a grid system itself, but due to time limitations we couldn't get a working tilemap in time for the jam and had to resort to something else. To speed up the process next time, and for others, I've created some tooling to make it easier.

The autotile templates provided with the official Godot documentation on Autotiles aren't easy to use because the guide lines have been baked into each tile, requiring lots of editing using a graphics program (such as gimp). They're usually not at the dimensions required, either. Godot Autotile Texture Templater (GATT) solves this problem by generating templates for use in Autotiles.

Set your block size and desired base colours and 2 files will be generated for use in Photoshop or Gimp as a base for your own tile art. Or use it right away in a prototype right in Godot.

My game isn't about farming (come trade ratings)

100,000 years ago an advanced alien race planted the seeds of intelligent life on Earth. And now they've come to reap their harvest.

In Body Harvesters, you're the one being harvested.

On the grid

Figured out how to highlight line of sight to cake ( I'll make it look nicer , this is just the debug art ) , now to figure out the broken cake train, and add another rat behind the cat to pass the cakes to.

Where are the obvious games?

At the beginning of the jam, once the theme was announced I saw this post: delete.png (sadly I cannot find the post anymore so I cannot give credit to the original creator - if you know who created the post and image please let me know)

So obviously we choose a different style game for our entry. This year we stayed much closer to the theme as in the jams before, but that's a different topic.

But now to the real question: Where are all those Stardew Valley clones, that were expected?

That is an honest question. I love those kind of games and I was hoping to play more of them after this jam. Of cause the scope has to be limited to fit in the restraints of a game jam, but so far I found just one game that was similar.

So please, if you made any game in that style, let me know and I will play it!

Check out our game!!

It's called "Harvest Mouse: Veggie Survivor" and it's our first game jam together! It was my boyfriend's first time game jamming and the first week that he has ever opened Unity and I'm very proud of him!!

I also got to do pixel art of a little mouse family so that's always a win in my book. There was of course more we wanted to do with our top-down shooter but I'm very happy with what we accomplished given the time!!

Link is here, and if you comment and I'll check out your game as well!

Our chaotic dev story

At first, we were 4.

We started this jam with the same team we did the last one - an awesome crew with a lot of experience and talent. After the first day, the first bomb was dropped - one of our crew members got sick and could not join our adventure.

At this point, we had 2 ideas with 2 distinct paths - The first, a small scoped puzzle game about a plant that needs water and sunlight so it can be harvested. We knew we could build the basic mechanism with our reduced team.

Screen Shot 2023-01-12 at 11.20.31 AM.jpg

The second was to a more ambitious Metroidvania about harvesting escaped souls from possessed ducks. We knew that we might not make it in time, but we also knew that if we did, we would be more proud and learn so much more.

We decided to take our chances, with fun and challenge as our main motivations.

Screen Shot 2023-01-12 at 11.22.04 AM.jpg

After a day and a half of work, the second bomb was dropped - another team member had to leave early, and that was quickly followed by the third - our composer could only start working 3 hours before the deadline.

So this was our time to nut up or shut up.

As swiftly as everything broke down, we all came back and gave our final push in the last hour.

And here it is - the labor of fun, stress, and a lot of chaos.

We are all very proud of the outcome.

beware the subnuggets

sublug_mouse.png

I forgot to bring my tablet for the jam, so I started to draw the whole thing with a mouse. I like to challange myself with things like these, it can be inspiring to have some kind of limitations while drawing stuff. I'm surprised how good it turned out, but obviously it wasn't the best idea.

Also, this was my third Ludum Dare, and I had so much fun making assets for this game.
