Ludum Dare 54 September 29–October 2, 2023

If you love puzzle games you can try my game Troubled Turtles!

Troubled Turtles is a short and cozy sokoban-esque puzzle game about helping turtles reach carrots, filled with interesting facts and puns. I'm considering making a post-jam update when the jam ends and would love to get your feedback!

Play Troubled Turtles in your browser

You can also read my key insights from Jam 53 and their contribution to Jam 54 here

The toughest levels (from players' feedback) are 14 and 17, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on these, and if you have ideas for new mechanics, etc!

So, if your day is beak, or you feel like flippering out, don’t sturtle, come play my cozy turtle game. I promise you’ll have a shell of a time, and that it’s better than taking a snap. There are 17 levels to beat, some are easy, some are espeshelly hard!

Tiny People Big Adventure - Post Jam With All Scenes Included!

Banner.jpg

Hello everyone! We got way, way ambitious with this time, and paid for it by barely getting our game out in time, and that game had maybe 40% of the actual scenes we filmed included. We've gone and finished the game we actually wanted to make, and hope you'll come back and try the completed version.

If you intend to vote on it, please play the actual jam version first!!

But then, come back and try the postjam version. We've got:

Love Stardew Valley, but wish you could LOSE?

I have the game for you :)

For the last three years, I've been living in New York City. With the theme of limited space, I wanted to make a game that reflected what it was like to live in a tiny New York apartment: sometimes it feels like you have to rearrange all your furniture just to get into bed at night. So, I emulated the cooking mechanics from games like Overcooked or Stardew Valley, but within a Sokoban framework to constrain space. The idea would be that getting to your cooking equipment/other furniture would be a challenge in and of itself, and you'd often have to solve a Sokoban-style congestion puzzle to keep your cooking routine going.

I worked alone for 72 hours, and, maybe in the spirit of the game itself, I had to split my time and attention with work I had for my day job. So, I didn't have time to add enough content, or to tune the money/hunger system as much as I'd wanted. As it stands, players lose too much money, they get hungry too quickly, and their options are too limited for the spatial constraint dynamic to come into play. That said, the core gameplay loop is solid enough that I consider the game a success!

I have plans to expand upon the game after Ludum Dare reaches a close. I want to slow down the hunger meter, and lower the initial rent, so players can experiment with investing in more furniture at the beginning; add more recipes and cooking equipment; implement a demand-fluctuation mechanic to incentivize a diversified cooking setup; fix and flesh out the contentment meter; add mechanics like a day-night cycle and lighting equipment for nighttime cooking; add a tutorial and intro cut-scene.

Known issues:

  • With the current controls, it's easy to accidentally eat food when you wanted to move it around. If you're using a keyboard to play, you can use the alternate key setup to separate the two action buttons more.

  • For the bed and the oven, there's a bug where you can accidentally toss it before it leaves the shop window for no money back. Make sure not to push them up when you first buy them.

  • It's easy to miss when the contentment meter starts to fall. It'll turn red, so watch out!

Development continues!

Hey everyone, thanks again for your feedback.

Early stages, but development is full steam ahead! My plan is that to publish the game on Steam and Itch at the end of the year!

Here's a sneak peak of the new possiblities:

13102023.jpgHi! Good night. How are you?

I was working on * update 1.4 of my game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/trash-exe)*, however, I confess that I got tired lol. I'm going to take some time to rest, so I thought, a good way to rest is play, so why not?

If you want, * send me the link of your game *, my PC has problems with some games that use GODOT, other than that I'm looking forward to seeing more games. :).

Fixed some stuff post-jam

Since the original box drawing was super complicated and rushed, here's a slightly improved one, where you can draw from any point and not be restricted to drawing left to right, you can also drag the box now too. :smile_cat:

I've added the tweaked version to the game page.

I want to play your games!

These last few weeks I've been very busy with studies and work and I haven't been able to play the games here at Ludum Dare, so this weekend I'm going to try to play as many games as I can!

Please, if you want me to play and leave my feedback on your game, leave the link below.

Space Stitcher Post-Jam Release

cover_image.png

https://kaliuresis.itch.io/space-stitcher

I have released a post-jam update of my LD54 entry, Space Stitcher! It is a puzzle platformed about reconnecting and reorienting space.

I felt like the concept had a lot of potential that the jam version did not live up to. This update adds several new and redesigned levels, and is overall more polished.

A tip for people with not enough ratings

Since we try to help each other..:

TLDR:

Rating And commenting meaningfully on games is the sure-fire way for your game to be seen more.

The longer version:

The visibility queue

So, it seems to be pretty simple (and confirmed by other members and our self-giving host Mike as well) - I have not checked how exactly it works, but I know it is there since every time I rated a game, the next day I was getting an equivalent (or close to) number of ratings. No posts, no additional self-promotion comments anywhere, no nothing. Note: I do spend time to quality-comment on most games, not a single one did I not comment (not sure if this is related or not, But the site also says that the coolness/karma rate is probably involved too (when you get a heart on your useful comment, again - more people WILL see your creation).

So it seems it really is a community exercise : ))) I very much liked it (first competitive LD for me, finding some awesome and warm-hearted friends here : )))

The proof

I am already at 30 ratings without even trying to do much (other than the above) after the 15th, so no need to check my thing.

Thank you all aaaand have fun playing and providing feedback to others! There are around ~50% percent of the games with < 20 ratings yet. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/stats

Enjoy! ^^

Well Then

I got my girl(the laptop) back on Thursday. 6 days left, I guess I should grind some and do something. My plan is to draw something done and composing something done too. Anyway, I highly doubt that I would win something, I might as well play enough games from randomly refresh games on LD. I do also plan to make a stereotype post about games in LD (don't worry, I will not talk about the bad apples that ruined my mood). Maybe I should play that tf2 zombie mode for the fun to relax. I will try to ignore self advertise comment types if those games are not my interest(such as convoluted controls, 3d games, games that takes too much space, games that takes too much GPU because I fear for my laptop monitor goes haywire again), tldr, short simple games that doesn't take my time will always catch my interest because I have homework and next month, I have an exam for the JP course. Good luck and have fun

We reached 20 ratings for our spaceship game!

We just reached 20 ratings!

Games in need of ratings

There is a "Danger" filter on the games page, which lists all the games which haven't yet had enough ratings to be scored. Please help out and rate them!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/54/games/danger

My own game is on that list, with only 14 ratings at time of posting. I'm not going to call it out though, help everyone!

What's all this about The Fregstival?

Are you a freg, enjoy food and desire to feast in the name of your almighty Frogod? 🐸

The Fregstival welcomes you!

I made a quick 4 minute video that walks through a "round" of the game to give people and idea of how to play. The game is made in Unreal, so no web build sadly - but if you wish try download and try it yourself, check out our Game Page.
