Fan art for LD53 games

The last few events, I've been drawing fan art of every game I play during play and rate (LD52, LD51, LD50).

I decided to keep up the tradition for LD53, with the following twists:

  • Fan art was drawn in pixel art style
  • Every character gets cat ears, like the characters (and various inanimate objects) in my game Holding Out.

Here's the group picture!

If anything looks interesting to you, here's a full list of games:

  1. Holding Out by @jeremy-ryan
  2. Neighborhood Postal Service by @paul-nadan
  3. Chateau Grennouilles by @paul-merkamp and @alex-mcgrath
  4. Postal Pocalypse by @bwalter and @mothense
  5. Elevander of the Emu Express by @brainoid, @honest-dan, and @spacey3d
  6. Juggle Mail by @kuviman
  7. The Pigeon Post Principle by @cassowary
  8. Aerial Odyssey by @tvorojok, @maximbegunov, and @alekhoz
  9. Snail Mail by @winter2277, @william-wells, @adrien-tremblay, and @martenscedric
  10. Lucky Lefty Loves Letters by @thebooksnail and @elysiagriffin
  11. Grav Garb by @gizmolo, @wiredoverload, @xxatrain223, @bigtex, @karkadan, @arnenia, and @alchemic
  12. Toad Pizza Express by @nazorus
  13. Long Tail by @hitchh1k3r
  14. Badger Break Out by @knatt
  15. Sick Day Delivery by @jesseww, @caldane, @leith-prise, @serenamagic, @selidex, and @pyspher9
  16. Superbloom by @amango, @charles-haitkin, @augustin-carroll, @zinteger, @mlooper, and @devook

A few takeaways: - Pixel art is... harder? I would have expected pixel art to take less time and effort than more traditional illustration, but it was more challenging if anything to abstract characters --- keeping them recognizable, but also fit with the style for the group shot. - Choose a palette ahead of time and stick to it. Otherwise you improvise and end up with like ten slightly different shades of green. - Be consistent about scale. Things started out pretty well, but I ended up with a human sized pigeon and a bee the size of maybe a gorilla (and about as furry). - It was a lot of fun. The community continues to produce great little games with fun characters that make this personal challenge fun every year.

Great work everybody, and good luck as we head into results tomorrow!

Delirium and Deliverance - LD53 Extra - We finally delivered it!

D&D_cover.jpeg

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/53/delirium-and-deliverance

Yesterday we finally managed to deliver our contribution for the Extra category. But unfortunately, although we initially aimed for Jam, we missed the deadline, and then, as it happens, it took a lot of work to force ourselves to finish.

For half of the team, it was a return to Ludum Dare after three years (albeit without our good friend @Wolar, who is waiting for the delivery of his child), for the others, it was the first game Jame ever. Before the game jam, we decided to add one more condition - we will make a horror game. Even though we were not so happy with the topic after it was announced, surprisingly, I managed to come up with a design on the way to our office and then impose it on everyone else.

But the original Jam's three days were like child delivery. We planned to make a horror walking simulator where the player plays as a mother who has to hide from the hospital staff and carry her newborn daughter out of the hospital. But we overscoped as usual; failed to integrate some tools; some had to attend to other duties; prepared some mechanics like sound detection and doors on keys and scrapped them at the end; I completely forgot how to work with the blender. It was a mess.

On the other hand, it was a blast, at least for me. I got to write code for the first time at the Jam and for the first time for a 3D game. And I learned a lot of things that I will definitely use at the next Jam.

Lessons learned:

  • Limit scope at the bare minimum, you can always add new things later, and it is better than wasting time on something that needs to be scratched out.

  • Try all the tools before Jam.

  • Assess the level of commitment from each team member. It's okay if someone wants/can give Jam less time, but it's necessary to take it into account.

To wrap it up, we will be delighted if you play our horror game Delirium and Deliverance and leave us feedback.

And if you want something scary, we bring you a judgmental baby. horrorChild.png

See ya next time at Ludum Dare.

Will there be a live stream of the result of the top 15?

Screenshot 2023-05-20 135934.png Congrats to all who finished on time! To those who didn't, keep going! Remember, setbacks are part of the journey. Embrace the lessons learned, stay determined, and continue pursuing your goals. Success isn't defined by a deadline; it's the result of resilience and never giving up.

Thanks for all

Not whitelisted yet, new developer

@Mike,
As others suggested, some fresh profiles (like mine) are not yet whitelisted ;( and thus my Extra game never became public (not listed under the Extra section) although the link is available publicly (to the game posting itself!). If it matters, currently it can be found in my profile and 2 generous guys were nice enough that they even played my game. : ))) (^-^)

Mike, this is for you, thank you very much in advance.. and I know (that you will) at some.. point.. whitelist me :D .. wanna make it for the next jammy-jam ^^ officially

THANK YOU! Keep up the great work and let it become even greater!

There once was a fellow named Mike,

There once was a fellow named Mike,

Who held knowledge others would like.

He knew the results, oh, so well,

But kept them locked in his secret cell.

With a knowing grin upon his face,

He held the answers in their rightful place.

Curiosity sparked, but he stood strong,

For revealing the truth would be so wrong.

In whispers, they begged, "Oh, please, do share!"

But Mike remained elusive, without a care.

He held the key to the hidden insight,

Leaving everyone to ponder day and night.

Though frustrating, his silence was true,

For Mike knew the power of a mystery to brew.

With patience, they waited, hoping someday,

He'd reveal the results, and all would say, "Hooray!"
