LD24 August 24–27, 2012

Closing thoughts

Well, this was my first time participating in LD, and it was awesome. I’ll be sure to participate in future events, maybe even using Java with some kind of library like LWJGL, instead of Construct Classic.

I got rank 67 overall in the 48 hour competition, and I’m very happy with that for my first entry. I’m pretty proud :) I was expecting to rank only in the top half, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

One thing I’ll be sure to think about for future entries is making the game feasible and appetizing for people to complete in full. Many of the games I played I liked, but I just grew impatient and quit because I decided I didn’t want to invest that much time. I think many people understandably did that when playing my game, because it was fairly long, and very tedious/repetetive. That’s definitely something to think about; I think you want your players/judges to see all of the content/levels/graphics/etc you put into the game.

Also, I think I’ll make it a goal sometime in the future to learn how to use some kind of music-making software like FL-Studio, and learn up on composing music as well. I found that even a simple soundtrack really benefited a lot of games I played.

I enjoy playing and making 2D platforming games for a few reasons. One of which is that I can get pretty impatient, and in those games you are pretty much always jumping, dodging, shooting, etc. so I’m always kind of engaged. maybe in the future I’ll try to make a different genre. There were many simple neat games I saw that weren’t platformers.

I got around to playing about 55 games I think. I could have played a lot more, like twice or 3 times as many, but I was just feeling lazy this end of summer. Ah well. I gotta get out of that mindset – I’m moving to my college dorm this Saturday! 😀

Thanks to everyone who played my game! :)

Oh My …. !

We have the … FIFTH POSITION concerning the humor !!!

Our friend Spotline is the FIRST concerning the audio, congrats to him!

Our friend Ilod did pretty well also (Moche FTW !).

And our friends from Rift of time also!

Congratulation every body!

I can’t even tell how happy we are! Watch out, we’ll do best next time! No i understand more what the Ludum Dare is about. I feel bad, because i haven’t played a lot of your games. But i’ll do best next time! See you guys in December :3

Wow, thanks to everyone who tried my tiny adventure

The Fromagist was simple, but I appreciate everyone who posted and commented on my entry. I really only had a shot at the humor category (graphics? audio? What’s that?) and with my Java chops getting a bit stronger every day I think I can bring something more like a real game next time around. Also, I hope to nail the theme a bit better too.

I’m at work, and can’t write too much now but wow… top ten in the humor category. I’m humbled, I would’ve been happy in the top-half really.

Also, thanks to everyone who made a game I played – there’s some amazing stuff out there, and many talented people/teams that produce so much so fast it makes one’s head spin. I can’t wait for #25 and hell… maybe the mini LD too… it actually sparked an idea immediately in my brain for a ‘not-game’. We’ll see.

For now, just thanks and gratitude all around. I couldn’t have had a better intro to Ludum Dare. You are all the best! :)

New Skills for Beetlefield !

I decided to make a post-compo version with the new skills I had no time to add in the 48h compo version.

In this new version, beetles will be able to fire missiles at their opponent or teleporting in their back to avoid bullets. There’s also a mutilate skill for blewing some legs off and burst of missiles as well as seeker projectiles. Ice shards slow down their target and cannibal can gain life by eating the bloody spots on ground.

You can play this new version on kongregate and save your armies there, so you will not have to copy-paste DNA code anymore.

Thank you very much to everyone who rated my game generously enough to make me reach this #5 position.

Congratulation to every winners of Ludumdare24 and congratulation to everyone who learn something by sacrificing those 3 days on the the glorious altar of video game making !

So many cool games! O_o

I’m not sure how, but I somehow missed almost all of the games that ended up in the top 50.

So much more playing to do now; can’t wait.

Congrats everyone!

Audio … 2.94 … What ?!

Hi everybody !

So I’m a bit disappointed  about the results of my game…

Even if lot of people like my game’s music, I’ve reached only 2.94/5 points in audio… What ?! To my mind, this is a bad result. Very bad. I spent a lot of time creating the music, and only 2.94 … that’s not cool for me.

But… How were the results calculated ? I guess this is not a simple average of all votes…

So. I don’t know if I would participate to another ludum. I’m really disappointed…

Ratinglessness

It appears that a lot of games have not received scores in any category at all – at first I thought it was due to having 0 coolness, but I then noticed the same for a number of other games with a reasonable coolness %. Are more people rating N/A than usual, or is there another reason for this? Either way, it’s pretty disappointing that what seems like hundreds of games have not received a score at all. I think the ability to see individual ratings needs to be brought back – not necessarily in the old list format, which would be huge now due to the popularity of LD, potentially make voting less anonymous, and bring back the old all-1s/all-5s complaints, but perhaps following hamster_mk_4’s suggestion in the comments on the results post, which is to display the number of times each score from 1-5 was given in each category. Even if a game doesn’t get enough non-N/A ratings to be counted in the main list, they should at least be able to get some score feedback.

I guess it’s because those people got less than the minimum amount of votes (I think 12).
18. Sep 2012 · 17:42 UTC
I didn’t know there was a minimum. I haven’t seen anywhere that said there is a minimum in the 3 LDs that I have entered. There really should be some clear notice, I would hate to have my entry discounted because of lack of ratings. They should definitely be allowed to see their average scores and potential rank!

The Monster Factory Project

Hello fellow Indie-Devs! I wanted to post and let you all know about a Project I am working on called “The Monster Factory!” Now I know that the not-so-glamorous life of an idie dev constitutes a thin wallet with barely enough money to scrape by and buy the next can of Mountain Dew that fuels our efforts… but I am not asking for much! The Monster Factory is a project I am doing to raise money for the Gift of Adoption fund.  A righteous endeavor, no? I am using Fiverr.com (not sure if that was a good or a bad idea yet) to facilitate the purchases, so the price for a monster is $5 bucks.  Out of that $5 fiverr.com pockets $1.00, I pay myself $3.00 (Working for 3-9 bucks an hour here… nothing glamorous!) and $1.00 goes to the GoA fund.  You also have the option to donate an extra 5 or 10, all of which goes to the GoA fund.  So if you want a monster draw for anything, please check it out! You then own the little guy and can do whatever you want with him! Got a pixel video game character you want me to draw? Got a character you wanna see in my style? Or do you just want to adopt a little monster to then in turn help donate money to the Gift of Adoption fund because you have a golden heart inside your little indie developer self?

What you get as a result is a high res image with a transparent background (Hell, if you want the .fla source as well id give it to you! I just know most people would not know what to do with a .fla) and you get a YouTube video of me drawing your monster.  Kinda cool right? Here are a few examples of what I have done so far:

(Click on them to link to their YouTube videos)

Thanks for your time! Check out the project here:

Hi, there –

Entries with no rating – what?

There seems to be quite a few of them – no score in any section whatsoever, even with a number of comments saying they played and liked the game. I know that I’d be really disheartened if this happened to me. Is this a bug, or just a lot of people decided to comment without voting? What is happening?

EDIT: Where does it say there is a 12 vote threshold? I had no idea, neither have I been told in ld 22 or 23. It’s not mentioned in the rules.

These are probably the entries that failed to cross the 12 vote threshold required to be ranked.

A lot of entries were unplayable for some reason or another, I followed the instructions and left a comment but did not rank. Considering how the coolness system worked more than 12 people probably tried to play each game, but not everyone was diligent to wade through all the missing dll’s and esoteric library installs.

Getting short strawed is pretty unpleasant and frustrating.

I did not know this before the dare as well and it is a deal breaker really isn’t it?

PROJECT “E” – HQ and Post-Mortem… Links

Hello again, all, this time around for LD, I made a first person puzzle game called “Project ‘E’ “. This was a first for me: I had never made a puzzle game before. I’m so used to actiony games and combat games that I actually made the music a little too extreme 😛 Anyways here’s the game:

PLAY

If you want to see how I made the game, watch this ACTION PACKED TIMELAPSE:

My game also got reviewed by Raw Media!

RESULTS! (Drum Roll)

Coolness 71% #106 Audio 3.30 #145 Mood 3.11 #220 Innovation 3.20 #229 Overall 3.23 #273 Humor 2.36 #373 Theme 2.90 #379 Fun 2.78 #435 Graphics 2.73

Okay! So overall not bad, getting 100 – 200 rankings. This was a lot better than last time, but not quite as good as LD22. Here’s a chart for ya’ll:

Alright so looks like audio and mood are definitely my top categories! (Which is good because that’s what I work on the most) Something I definitely need to work on though is the graphics. Art styles have DEFINITELY been IMPROVING on Ludum Dare, and I need to get up to speed with mine 😀

Happy gaming, Ludum Dare <3

We finally found time to complete our LD game! \o/

We only had 2 out of 4 gameplays at the end of the competition, but we decided to finish the game anyway, so there it is!

A timelapse from Carduus will be posted soon.

To those who rated our game despite it being incomplete, thank you!
We managed to get in the top 10 in Humour and Graphics, which we find a bit crazy for an unfinished game…

Anyway, we hope you will enjoy it, and don’t hesitate to give us your feedback!

Here are some screens of the 4 different mini-games :

Oh and there’s also a Drunk Mode…
Will you find how to activate it? ^^

Oh, so the voting has finished… Let’s look at my result ! With comments !

  • Bronze Coolness 67% : Hey, so 1 rating!=1% Because I have rated about 45 games….
  • #76 Overall 3.63 : Woooooooo … OMAGAD I’M 76th on 1406 GAMES I’M …
  • #77 Fun 3.51 : Having 133 kittens trying to kill is fun.
  • #86 Humor 3.16 : Oh yeah. Kittens . They do everything for you !
  • #152 Mood 3.10 : Uh. I though It was impossible to make a moody game with humor, apparently I was wrong.
  • #161 Audio 3.06 : Uh, again . Just using autotracker-bu and bfxr can give you a good rating . (But I wish I was better at SunVox) .
  • #275 Graphics 3.17 : The graphics were simple pixel-art, and apparently, it worked .
  • #364 Innovation 2.86 : Ok, it was just another rogue-like, after all .
  • #647 Theme 2.09 : Oh. I think we have here my main failure , and here is why :
Suppose you wake up, find-out Evolution was the chosen one . In France, here, LD 24 started at 2h so the best option was to simply sleep during the night then find the right idea in the morning . The problem was that I have a really poor imagination when it comes to game design . 10 hours or so, and I don’t have any idea yet . So I took my shower . Taking your shower give you ideas, I don’t know why but that’s like this .  There is something that I didn’t want to do, was these games where you are a bacteria who eat smaller bacterias, and get eaten by bigger bacteria . I wanted something original … So I took the sum of E,V,O,L,U,T,I,O, and N translate into number and got 133 . Then I did a game based on the theme “133“. Sure, It’s original, but now, I think that was a bad idea because there is so much games that actually made an evolution-related game. Some with an interesting take on the theme, some which are pure fun, some with humor… I then made some games in the last month, they aren’t finished, or polished. It look like I suddently rediscovered the joy of coding. Also, I will be in MLD37 ! 😀 I’ll do a sandbox game. Things learned :
  • Take your time to find the idea .
  • Don’t make personal libs if you are fast, it’s too easy -> not fun.
  • Try to be better each time at each points. If you are bad at graphics, try to be better at this .

October Challenge?

—Please ignore spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.

Its been almost a month since the LD24. I did  not finish my project because i broke under the pressure of time and quit half way through because what I was trying to do was a bit much and to advanced for me. Discouraged and sad I stopped programming for a few weeks.

School started and I made a promise to myself that I would straighten my life. Starting with school, I decided to do correspondence courses(Basically home school) for the classes I failed last semester because I only had one important class at school(English). So now I’m half -way through Science 10 in less than a week, next I just have to upgrade my math from apprentice ship to Regular math 10 and next semester I will be able to take Pre-cal and physics.

Once School got fixed, I decided to fix my social life. I wont really go into details, but I have been talking to an awesome girl the last few weeks and I hope that goes well.

And at the bottom of my priorities there was programming which is what I’m looking into right now. I want to Program it is one of my favourite things to do. So I started programming again. I also came back on the site the first time since the compo and seen mini LD37… that looks confusing as hell, so, I figure that I’m better off going for the October challenge instead. I have an awesome game Idea and have been looking for an excuse of sorts to do it.

I’ll make another post in a week when the compo starts. For now I’m going to do some preparation  (Story & sound).

buh bye. cant wait :)

Waiting for YOU to help ME

So! I’m making a multiplayer game! Where you have to register!

So. It’s my first time making anything online. I’m using Construct Classic. I can load data from the web (Dropbox :P), but I have no idea how to update it there.

Problems:

  1. Dropbox-based server can only be updated from my computer. Yours won’t be able.
  2. The information you pass to me must be secure. At least username and password.
  3. I came with an idea of YOU making a dropbox file, where you will pass me whatever is needed. Including username and password. Again, security. I don’t know Dropbox well, it seems you can privately give me files using it.
  4. I don’t think I’ll be able to make an automatic information reciever in time. I can at least track which files were updated, but I’ll have to read them manually. It can be in the post-compo thought.
  5. Graphics. The not-game I make requires TONS of graphics. I’m not sure if I will need any help, but if I will, is there someone who can draw with computer better than me and willing to help me?
  6. I just thought that no password is okay. Because everything you do (until there is an automatic reader) will pass through me, and I can see if you are the owner of the profile. But there will be no privacy this way (But the kind of game I make doesn’t suppose privacy).

So… You are not forced to help, but the quality and user-friendliness of my game will be dependent on the amount of your help.

Making a multiplayer game without knowing how to deal with a registration system is a pretty large undertaking. You might be biting off more than you can chew in one weekend (or just over a week since the submission is open longer).

Entering Mini Ludum Dare #37

Hello,

Few days ago I saw the Mini Ludum Dare #37 announcement, and started to think about whether to enter this and what not-game would I make. I had two topics on mind:

  • My miserable life. Kind of an egoist topic, but nowadays I’m dealing with quite unpleasant issues. For example, recently my work schedule has been changed so that now I have significantly less time for software development and recreation, and to be honest, I don’t take it so easy…
  • Asperger’s Syndrome / Autism in general. Maybe this topic would be more valuable than the egoist topic above, but the problem that I had no idea what not-game could I make out of it. I was thinking of joining forums to ask for ideas, but before I could get around to it, I’ve got more and more ideas for the other topic…

In the end, I decided to do the first topic, mainly because I feel like doing it, and currently I don’t really have motivation to do the other. So I’ll live out my egoism.

Actually, I’m not even 100% sure if I’ll do this. Maybe I’ll get up tomorrow and I won’t feel like to get into it, and so I won’t do anything in the end. Anyway, I have an other project which I should get on track with, since now I can only work on game development at weekends, and I’m being several weeks late with that.

By the way, this would be my first Ludum Dare entry of any kind, ever. Let’s see!

I am just a man.

I’m in for the miniLD.

I’m going to be naughty and disregard the theme. Both of them. 😉

My game will be an arty platformer about a girl navigating through a forest to get… somewhere. I won’t spoil the ending that I have in mind.

It will use a limited palette, as well. :)

ie “I’ll make a game in 48 hours whilst other people enter the miniLD”

In the words of Nicholas Cage,

“I’m in!”

Idea -> GTFTSTG: Go the Fuck to Sleep the (not) Game

Based on the hit book, this not game focuses on the nigh impossible goal of getting a baby to go to sleep. It will be a very ambient point-and-click adventure with interactive items and random events (if there’s time). I’ve only got Saturday to work on it, but it will happen. I would also like to officially announce as per the rules that I will be using many Creative Commons photographs and sounds because all the graphics will be photos and the sounds will (hopefully) be realistic. I also may reuse some LibGDX tutorial code because I’m still learning the engine and will not have much time.

Tools:

LibGDX, Gimp, Audacity, Eclipse, Github

Let’s rock.

I’m in for the MiniLD

Well, I’ve been thinking it over for a while, but I think I’m in for the MiniLD.

I’ve got a few ideas brewing, but in general, I’m not quite sure yet.

Anyways, time to challenge myself to make a personal game with some time-dependent elements in 24 hours or less!

…or just take the liberty of the submissions being open for a little while longer…

Who knows!

EDIT: I’ll probably be using Game Maker 8.1 and GIMP, maybe SFXR.

-Matt

Joining the Mini LD

Well, looks like it’s gonna be my first mini ludum dare (or a ludum are in general).
Will have something to do with time, some ideas:

-Gunner at day, ninja at night

-Mine at day, fight in the evening, hide at night

Tools:

Unity3D – Game Engine

Blender – 3D Modeling

GIMP/Paint.net – Art

sunvox-1.7.2b – music

SFXR -sound effects.
