Entering our first Game Jam with LD #32.

Hey, this is our first post here and we’re incredibly excited to be entering our first game jam.

We’ve been sitting on the sidelines for too long, and finally decided our company is going to go full steam ahead with games, so why not make our first official project be the LD #32 entry?

Goals

  • Keep it simple stupid. ( Viewing others go the process has taught us not to over reach)
  • Finish
  • Top 100

Tools

  • Unity 5
  • Photoshop CS6
  • Logic Pro
  • BFXR
  • Pencil + Grid Paper

Final Thoughts

Being a two man team, we’re going to share coding / art responsibilities. After watching films such as Super Game Jam, and Game Loading, it’s clear that there is something special about game jams and we want to be apart of every LD Jam going forward. We look forward to sharing our game with this awesome community and we look forward to playing your games too!

No way out?

Is this an “I’m in!” post? Well, not really…

It’s about my game for Mini-LD #58, which is titled “No way out?”.

1

It’s less  of a game and more of an experience or little story. If you got a couple of spare minutes there’s probably no reason not to check it out.

This is the link to the game’s page.

I’d really love to hear your feedback on this one. It’s the first time I tried something like this and also my first 3D game (though the graphics are not that spectacular), so I’m very interested in your opinions about it. Well, I always am, but this time especially.

Oh, and concerning LD32: Count me in. :)

Release of my LD31 game, just in time for the LD32

It took me a while but I finally did it.

I released a new version of my LD31 entry, coloring.

I had to rewrite it completely, because I used my HTML5 framework (AGE) and I wanted to deploy it on mobile. So thanks to haxe and OpenFl I did it without trashing all my old code.

So what’s new ?

  • Animations
  • Better score handling with combos
  • A preview of the colors order and which one can pop
  • A tutorial, to help the beginners understand the game mechanism
  • Google play integration for the Android version (leaderboard and trophies)
  • Lots of bug fixes :)

For the first time, I did integrate unit tests in order to test all (or at least the most) game possibilities. For that I used munit which is really great.

For the leaderboard integration, I’ve used linden-google-play library which is a native extension for OpenFl.

So here you can play the old version, and the new one on itch.io or directly on Google Play:

Enjoy, and let me know what you think.

I don’t really mean to put down your idea, it looks pretty good, but I’m not sure “Play the tutorial” should be a bullet point to sell the player

I’m In. Code All The Things!

Hey all,

LD 32 will be my first Game Jam of any kind and I’m stoked for it. I’m waist deep in a game project right now and doing this jam should be a nice breath of fresh air, allowing me to work on something completely different, and then attack my game with renewed enthusiasm after.

I’ll be doing the compo, because I like stress and deadlines and being a little competitive sounds awesome. Oh and best of luck to everybody!

Tools:

Engine – Unity 5

Art – Piskel, Paint.NET

Audio/Music – Reaper, JFXR

Motivation – Spotify, Youtube OST Playlists

LD32, I’m In!

This is my the first game jam of any sort that I’ve had time to enter, so I’m doing it! Looking forward to it!

The Game

  • LibGDX (Java) with Box2D

Artwork

  • Adobe Photoshop

Music / Audio

  • FL Studio
  • Audacity (only if I need to)

Stream / Recording (Depends on internet at the time)

  • Bandicam, if recording
  • OBS, if streaming

Let’s play – I’m in

I’m planning to work in Unity, but I’ve been spending a lot of time working with HaxeFlixel recently and I may have to go that route instead…

My goal this jam is to stop trying so damned hard

In recent years I’ve found myself spending entirely too much time concerning myself with “what if” situations rather than working. When I actually get to work I’m very productive, but I spend the majority of my time thinking about alternative solutions. I have to try break that cycle.

Let’s improvise

I participated in a graphics design workshop last month. We were taught the basics of shaders, and then given an hour to play around on http://shadertoy.com and encouraged to improvise. Instead of visualizing a desired outcome and trying to reverse-engineer the appropriate code, we used random inputs and scaled parameters until they produced something interesting. Only after finding that interesting thing were we encouraged to fine-tune our work.

The results were fantastic. I stopped second-guessing myself. I stopped trying to predict the outcome before committing to it. I embraced the unknown. Nothing felt risky because no outcome, good or bad, was going to be taken personally. I was free to play.

I’m in!

This will be my second Ludum Dare. I didn’t manage to finish my game last LD, which was a bummer. My goal was and still is to complete a game. Hoping to succeed this time around!

Tools:

Language: Haxe

Framework: HaxeFlixel

Editor: Sublime Text 3

Graphics: Pyxel Edit/GIMP 2.8

Audio: sfxr/bfxr

Version Control: GitHub

I can’t wait to have another go at this! Good luck and have fun, everyone!

I believe I may be using identical tools to you. Have, haxeflixel, pixel edit, sfxr, auto tracker, sublime 3!

Innage!

I’m in again. Last time sickness curtailed my LD effort and I didn’t submit. Hopefully this time I’ll be disease free. This entry I’m going to impose some constraints on my game to make it more challenging (as if it wasn’t challenging enough eh!). The game will be 3d and have some narrative/story elements. The reason I chose these constraints is that most of my LD games have been 2d and have had no story. We’ll see how this pans out.

Tools:

Unity/Adobe CC Suite/Allegorithmic texture tools/Modo 801/Ableton Live/BFXR/Visual Studio

Good luck everyone. Looking forward to playing all your games. :)

Sounds great, if not a little ambitious. Try and stay healthy this time, and don’t aim too high, or you won’t finish the game! Good luck!

First time, super psyched! (I’m IN!)

Hey folks! First time doing ludum dare, and I couldn’t be more excited!!

Hey can anyone tell me if we’re allowed to use purchased assets in addition to license free ones? Thanks!

If you are just jamming you are free to use purchased assets, but remember to check licensing. I strongly recommend you to opt out from the voting category where you used purchased or previously made assets.

I’m pretty sure that the art has to be original for the game to qualify. I watched a stream where someone was running out of time, and they shaved off a lot of time by going outside and taking photos for textures.

Let me give it a try!

This will be my first official Ludum Dare! I have made many games before, but I have never been rushed so let’s see how well I can do in 48 hours (fingers crossed I don’t work)

Tools:

Language: Java

Framework: Scratch!

IDE: Eclipse (Of course..)

Graphics: Paint.net

Audio:  Free stuff I find :(

Version Control: GitHub

I wish you good luck!

I assume, you mean ‘from scratch” and not ‘I use the scratch framework’ :)

Having no frameworks is very hardcore.

I’m so IN!

This will be my fourth Ludum Dare and I am already very excited.

This will be my toolkit:

Language: Go
Library: SFML
Text Editor: Vim
Graphics Editor: Pinta
Sound Effects: sfxr
Music: LMMS

In my previous entries I did not have any music. This time I serously want to add some music just because I can. Yesterday I started learning to use LMMS and this is what I have made for now. Seriously much more fun than programming.

I will be livestreaming my participation at twitch.com/tmkcodes. You can follow me at twitter @ToniKorpela

Curious about Go for games. I’ll be watching you 😉

Go? Never heard of that language. But it sounds like you’ll make something great if this is your 4th jam.

bacon points for using vim! also, I like SFML (and SDL as well)

Composer/sound designer looking for Jam coder to team up with!

So… I tried coding a few times (including Jam entries that sucked) but I kinda feel it’s not where I’m best at, thus I’m looking for someone to team up with! I’ve done mostly epic orchestral music and some weird sci-fi industrial stuff (plus some old chiptunes that didn’t survive till these days). Feel free to hit me up if you think you’ll fail because of music!

Ill be happy to team up. My strong points are programming and music. I currently use GameMaker Pro 8.0 if that’s ok. But yeah im happy to team up :)

Would be glad to team up if you’re interested. I can do programming and some art, music is definitely one of my weak points. I’ve done a few events previously (check out my profile) but all of them alone, really would like to team up with someone for a next event. Lemme know!

LD32?!WOW!I’m going to see how good am I!:D

Good on you for doing these at an early age. LDs are a great way to build skills :).

I. Am. In.

I’ll be competing for LD32!
I’ll be working in a team with the artist from my Ludum Dare 31 game, Duck, Jump, Die!(which is now in the process of being made into a mobile game!) and hopefully learning a lot and producing a game from start to finish, just like last time!

Oh, and I’ll be timelapsing.
Tools:
Game Maker Studio
BFXR

Back

After some failed attempts since this Autumn, I’m back to work on game jams!

I have started this last week, and done a game for the MiniLD#58, ZPONGX. I used Construct 2 to emulate the ZX Spectrum look again for this Pong clone. Made it mostly in 1 day. Even if there are some collision bugs (and the Color Clash didn’t work as I expected so I had to canceled it), I’m pretty happy with this small thing.

Now, since this weekend I have another tool on my dev/design belt… I discovered this (French) mini handheld console, the Gamebuino (site) based on Arduino hardware.

Imagine a GameBoy Advance downsized to credit card dimensions, with a Nokia 3310 screen (84*48px, black or white)… Sounds perfect to me lol… More seriously it looks like a nice modern DIY project with a retrogaming touch. The language is easy to learn, and I made already 2 games in few days! Since emulators exist, people can still playtest games made for this console on their computers (or Android portable): they are currently shooters, puzzle/platformers, multiplayer games, etc. I think it should be OK to do small mini-games, like the ones I used to do for Ludum Dare or other game jams with a limited time.

Okay, there needs to be a Gamebuino jam sometime. Even more of an exercise in minimalism!

Exactly! …more limitations equal more fun!
