Getting some gameplay

My game is now actually somewhat a game. The intro is done, and now you need to find springs. I have 2 screens done and the one you see below is almost done.

LD18_two This is the “level” that will introduce the main concept: getting enemy turrets to destroy their own circuits, or whatever you want to call them. so yeah. If I continue at this rate there should be a lot to explore

Psychic Prison Break

Here’s a very ridiculous attempt. It’s got some odd ideas that may or may not work depending on dialogue, which I’m leaving ’till tomorrow.

Here’s what I got…

Lovely graphics! Those gray tones and pixel font bring to mind old handhelds, and fit the theme perfectly :)

Fusion trails

Now with cool trails. Of course it would look more interesting if the ships did something else than going straight…

Can you feel the epic?

This looks really sweet! I’ve always wanted to do a space sim/flight game but 3d is hard. Yay for 2d!

Epic feel GET! 😀

Yep… Pretty EPIC! :)

Well, that didn’t take long.

Circles and Squares are no longer cutting it for what I’m trying to do, so I’ve begun work on a “part” editor.

Breaking for lunch.

Snack break

Eating some oreos while I write a quick update. I’m now 750 lines of code into my game. Pathfinding for the invading aliens works beautifully; There’s never going to be more than a hundred or so on screen at once and the board is pretty small, so I’m just running DFS for each alien on each game update. If that becomes a performance issue later, I’ll rewrite it as Kruskal’s from the endpoint and reverse all the paths as needed, but hopefully this will be good enough for LD18. The “Spud Cannon” is also up and running, grabbing an adjacent alien as it marches by and firing him as a projectile at another alien, causing damage to both. Progress since last screenshot isn’t really visible, so I won’t bother for now.

Next up on my list of things to do is to have actual player input, rather than just hard coding everything like I’m doing now for testing. After that, deal with levels, timer, budget/cost/score. Then weapon upgrades. Then game overs. Then build the other 4 weapon and 4 alien types. Then music and sound. So much to do! Time to get back to work.

Ludumzilla update

The game is fully mouse controlled now! To celebrate, some CB2 Bistro chips. Seriously, these are amazing chips 😉

CB2 Bistro chips - yum yum!!

Planning to add buildings in to get smashed, and get those monsters fighting. Will probably do this on the train back from Cambridge.

I wasn’t quite ready

Ok, for my first attempt at LD, it’s not going too well.  So far, I have a single image that can moved around the screen with the arrow keys, and my first spritesheet.  I spent far too long working on that spritesheet as I just don’t have the art skills … but it was fun :)

My first spritesheet for LD18

Anyway, I’m going to get some coding done now and not going to worry that I probably won’t have much at the end of the 48 hours.  It’s been a good experience so far, and I’ll be back for the next one

Hey, your robot is looking good. You know, I also have only got a sprite moving in a window, but that’s far better than what I had in my past attempts 😉 (several MiniLDs where I didn’t even have anything to post about).

Getting priorities straight

Who needs collision detection, AI or gameplay when you can have graphics!

Been feeling like I have a cold all day, so I’ve given myself a relaxing time fiddling with graphics instead of doing the real work.

Plan is for the player to fly an unarmed ship that is being chased by (very much armed) enemies.  Duck behind asteroids to avoid fire and trick the enemies into shooting themselves.

Hour 17

Okay its been about 6 hours since my last update, and I have been working pretty much solid apart from an hour lunchbreak when I went for a wander into town.

Ive made quite abit of progress with the core bits of the engine including the physics particle systems and the destructible terrain.

Dont believe me? Take a look for yourself:

(Gotta play it on my blog, no flash linking here for some reason)
http://mikecann.co.uk/ludum-dare/ludum-dare-hour-17/

Theres still no game really, just a pretty tech demo. Im hoping the gameplay will come next :)

Im going to have abit of a break now, get some food wind down a little then its going to be a loooooong night ahead for me!

Wow! This is eerily similar to an unseen, unreleased Game Maker game I worked on for the first YoYo Games contest.

Status update #3

this is going too smoothly

When’s it going to go wrong? it must be soon!

Nearly done all the game code.. tomorrow will be dedicated to sound and graphics!

little looksee:

Money money money

Money money money

Delicious colors.

Frame of my game is pretty much done. Basically you have a “gun” or whatever, which shoots colors.  red, green and blue. There are enemies of the same colors, and you have to match the color to kill them. but wait, that’s the easy part. There are also  magenta, cyan and yellow enemies, and you for instance have to shoot your light blue light through a green (or green through blue) to finish the cyan ones. In addition there are also orange, crimson, violet, cobalt, turquoise, lime and white enemies, and you’ll have to combine your beam with more enemies to get rid of them!

blah

Red ray + Cyan enemy = White ray.

the next part of the game is making a simple AI chaser, and a level “director”  along with something to protect in the middle of the map. I’m pretty happy with the color system, though, when you combine the “3rd” set (orange, violet etc) of colors you always get gray, which is the only loose end.

If things goes well I might even make an entertaining game, who knows :) I’m hoping to add slower but tougher (maybe they have two colors or something) enemies. but can’t say if there will be time for that.

I’m off to watch the outsides now though. been working 12 hours straight. weird part: I’m in a great mood! go ludum dare!

Edit:

Some air did me great. my plan for the rest of the day (putting it here so that i wont be able to lie to myself or procrastinate!):

  • eat + coffee
  • concept “art” (using the term loosely) and modeling. hopefully i will get a nice butt ugly city :)
  • code the chaser AI and the level/AI director.
  • Sleep (This is important!)
