MiniLD #24 – Pick ‘n’ Mix!

Weekend of the 14th of February, starting at the usual time.

…and by that, I mean the weekend before, so that’s 12th-13th, so the real start time is:

4am, Saturday February 12th UTC — 9pm Friday Feburary 11th EST/6pm PST

MiniLD #24 starts [fergcorp_cdt_single date=”Fri, 11 Feb 2011 21:00:00 -700″]

of course you’re welcome to enter whenever you like, I’m not strict with mini times <3

Going to announce the ‘theme’ early since it’s a mini, I’m relaxed with rules and time so do what you like.

Theme: Pick ‘n’ Mix

here’s how it’s going to work, I have lists of themes, limitations and rules. pick one (or more) of each and go!

Themes:

  • True Love
  • Tainted Love
  • Inside-out
  • Alternate universe spinoff of a major franchise
  • Tetris is now a <genre other than puzzle> game!
  • Fishing

Limitations:

  • 2 button input only
  • 1 button input only
  • 2 colours
  • Game must end in 60 seconds
  • All audio must be your own voice
  • Framerate cap at 5fps

Rules:

  • All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes
  • Work with a partner
  • Use a tool/language you have never used before
  • Wear something absurd whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to youtube when done.
  • Wear nothing whilst making the entire game, upload webcam timelapse to amateur porn site when done.
  • Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

there you go, pick one or more from each section, or do your own thing, it’s only a mini after all.

regarding times, make the game across whatever 48 hour(ish) period you like, spend more than 48 hours or spend less, I don’t care. submissions will be open for probably about a week after the weekend noted above, but if you want to dev alongside others, make your game over that weekend :)

THAT IS ALL! :)

edit: >>>>> Submit your games here! <<<<<

Original post:

no I’m not gonna let you vote on a theme, but I haven’t settled on one so if you have any suggestions on theme or rules, feel free to drop them in the comments :)

I know it’s not been long since I last hosted a mini, but this was originally a spot claimed by Terry, but he mentioned something about saving the world before lighting a cigar, getting on his motorbike then driving out the 2nd floor window and off into the distance. so I figured I’d take the spot now instead of September again :)

p.s. anyone who uses Valentines Day as an excuse not to take part is only going to look like an idiot, there’s nothing more romantic than making a game and dedicating it to your partner/spouse/sexbuddy/random-guy-on-a-train. 😉

Mini LD 23: Postmortem

tl;dr version:
We didn’t finish the project but we had a hell of a good time and will definitely be participating in future Ludum Dares. What follows is a list of useful things we found / were reminded of. If you’re interested in reading the rest of the blog (including what game we attempted to make and general feedback from our experience), hit the break.
* GraphicsGale / Allegro Sprite Editor (heheh)
* sfxr (how have I lived without this?!?)
* Pauls Online Math Notes (reexplained vector manipulation better than the other results I found)

Well well well, that was a fun weekend! =D

Friday night, I took part in Ludum Dare for the first time with JD and DR. Yes, I’ll get their actual names here soon. =P Anyway, we got together at JD’s house and got right into development with the first idea we had: a steampunk platformer. I started reading the spring physics tutorial generously provided in the comments on the LD announcement for the competition.

Enter lesson number one: if you’re trying to learn something, start coding WHILE you’re learning about it. I spent the majority of Friday night reading the spring physics article. I didn’t even begin coding it until about the same time Saturday night. When you have less than 24 hours to work on something that is at least a 48 hour project, this isn’t a good thing. xD

While I was doing my thing, DR was sketching out ideas in a program called Pencil.

Lesson number two: set the bar loooooow for Ludum Dare graphics. It wasn’t until midway through Saturday night that we actually started up a sprite editor. /facepalm

During this whole time, JD was having fun in sfxr. xD

Lesson number three: SFXR FTW, so hold on to the cool sounds you make even if they don’t match the game you are currently working on! JD seemed to have a knack for attracting very…interesting…sounds. Seriously, one sound JD generated was an explosion that dissolves quickly into static, as if a camera was watching an explosion and then got hit by the shockwave.

Odds are There is other stuff worth saying, but I can’t think of it right now. The last few days have been fun but busy, and the rest of the week is looking to shape up the same way. Bottom line is I had a great time and I’m looking forward to next month!

My try – LD logo contest

Not a winner, judging by the already submitted images, but since it’s done, I’ll post it here.

Luna – Progress Update

I’ve made yet more progress on Luna. I’ve got the mid-way boss completed, and I’ve also got the fifth level done. (Fifth counting the mid-way boss’ “level”)

I’m working on the sixth level right now, and hopefully will have all of the levels and the final boss done by some time Friday. After that, I will finish the hud (With score display, lives, and boss health), make the title screen, and do other nice things that will make the game nice and spiffy.

Edit: I have uploaded what I have so far to my Dropbox. I don’t have a screenie for it, but that’s what I have.

Overall, life is good. A lot of progress has been made, and things are going very well.

I might actually finish a game for a change. That’s exciting. 😀

Peace

Remember Spacenoid from LD18? Well…

Either you do not, I did a Flash version! It’s now called Arkanaut (to avoid confusion with other stuff called Spacenoid) and it’s avaiable on Kongregate: http://www.kongregate.com/games/Supermini_man/arkanaut

If you’ve an account there you can also submit scores. Thank you LD to have begin what is today Arkanaut. :)

The bottom and right parts of the screen seem to be cut off for me. That is, I can only see the top-left quarter of it.

Up and Down also working as rotate keys might make the mechanic more obvious. It may not be as logical as some key choices, but at least it’s one handed. That was a mistake I made (not reading).

Twice the ball exited the screen and didn’t respawn for me. I wasn’t able to figure out what needed to be going on for the error condition to arise.

Global Game Jam

Hey, LDers — the 3rd annual Global Game Jam is this weekend, and I thought it’d be pretty nifty to see who else is participating. GGJ is a 48-hour (weekend) jam, so I know you can handle it; the big difference is that it’s team-based, not solo. Pack up your machine, head over to <insert nearest major city here>, form a team, and write something awesome. You know the drill.

I’ll be at the Scottish Jam, in Glasgow. How about you?

A Personal Challenge – Brute Force

I’ve decided to take a break from working on Luna. It’s at a place where I’ve still got some interesting work to do and can probably pick it back up if I shelve it for a while.

So I’ve decided to try another relatively small exercise. I’m going to make a tank shooter. 😀

I’m giving myself until 6AM (EST) on the 31st of this month to complete it. That is, I’m giving myself four days.

The game will be a fairly typical tank shooter with procedural levels. The baddies will also be assembled semi-procedurally. (As in: Hand-made parts assembled procedurally) The player’s tank will also be customizable.

Here’s hoping…

Ooh, I loves me some procedural content! Always interesting to see what people can do with that.

Shameless Self Publicity Time!

Hello LD :)

I just wanted to spend a moment to shamelessly ask you to try out one of my first finished projects, a small game named FatCat:

Download Here

It’s free and it’s made by myself and a few artist friends, so check it out if you have time and give me some feedback! I would love to hear some opinions on it :)

It took a moment to figure out how to play, as I was expecting the entire row to slide, or for the pieces to swap across any distance rather than move one at a time with non-matching moves allowed. The allowance of non-matching moves makes the gameplay a little dull compared to other M3s that I’ve played. The slot machine doesn’t fit all that well (from a graphics or gameplay mechanic standpoint), and appears too frequently, breaking any chance to establish flow.

The installer pissed me off. I probably spent more time installing+uninstalling the thing than actually playing. Seems a bit overkill to use directX + openAL (why not directX sound?) for such a simple game.

Just start posting more stuff in the old group. No need to make a new one. Also, if you want an active group, making it private might not be the best idea.

Brute Force – Initial Progress, Goals, and Adjusting the Deadline

I’ve gotten some very, very basic work done for Brute Force.

I currently have the player’s tank, which rolls around on the screen and with a turret that turns toward the mouse.

The player’s tank is made up of a body, a turret, and some kind of propulsion (Generally but not always tank treads), each with some basic stats.

The game uses a custom event class to handle input events by name. (IE: “Left”, “Fire Primary”, or “Pause” instead of keyCode’s) I did take the Key class from FlashPunk (Which contains constants for keys by name), which made my job much easier.

The next thing I will put in is some kind of weapon. After that, equipment will be loaded from data files. Then, other things.

This should turn out to be a fun game.

Peace

Remember AfterDark?

Well, i finally got around to updating it to v2!

YAY!

Timecrawl is done

I finished my Ludum Dare mini-LD #23 game.  It’s available for play on Kongregate!

Timecrawl

Click on the pic to play, or go here to the Kongregate page.

I had fun putting this game together.  It plays a lot different from the version I showed people shortly after the contest is over.  Things are a bit more faster paced.

Anyway, enjoy.

That’s hilarious. Too bad Kongregate are a bunch of whiners though….

Post LD23 : Halifax 1917, todo list

As I have said last week, I have decided to finish this game, and I will probably submit it to Kongregate or some other flash game portal.

I have set up a public todo list on toodledo.com, so we can monitor what is done and what is left to do.

todo list of Halifax 1917

If you find bugs, if you have features that you’d like implemented, go ahead and add them here! I’ll add them to the todo list if they make sense :)

Mini-LD Speculation and Status of Personal Projects

I’m going to speculate a bit about what I’m going to do for the Mini-LD.

First of all, I might be making my game this weekend instead of next weekend. Sophie isn’t strict with Mini-LD times, and has even stated such, so I don’t think that it would likely be a big problem.

Also, I still want to make a top-down shooter. I have considered making a prototype of a game that I have been wanting to make for a while now, but I think that I will probably do that one on my own time.

Stuff about personal projects follows the break, for those who are curious about what I’m doing with my time.

I’ve decided that I am happiest with multiple projects running that I can move between.

Luna is on the shelf, currently awaiting its final level, final boss, and a nice frontend.

Brute Force is still an early prototype, and is awaiting the bulk of the work for it.

The project I’m working on most right now is one that I’ve poked at here and there, and that I really want to see happen. It is a multi-directional shooter, and will have lots of content and probably take a long time to make.

That’s about all I have right now. I’ll post more about that third project when I have something to show for it.

Peace

Happy Path – Global Game Jame 2011

This year I took part in Global Game Jam 2011 at Birmingham University hosted by IndieCity.

This is my game: http://www.thefunkvan.com/

Global Game Jam 2011 - Happy Path - KoryWazHere : www.TheFunKVan.Com

For a while now I’ve wanted to experiment with narrative game design. Using the world to tell a story and breaking the 4th wall. Also speed modelling and texturing. I pretty much got to do it all with this project and am really happy with the results.

Created using Unity 3D, Blender 3d and photoshop…2D ;P

Enjoy 😀

Ah ah, I like it, it’s funny. (I couldn’t play the game under Linux.) Very cute graphics too, and good music.

Mini-LD #24 – Entering Early, and Somewhat Retroactively

I’ve decided to enter the Mini-LD early. I have a game that I want to make for it, though it would likely ignore the theme. (Sophie hasn’t posted the theme yet, so I don’t know whether it follow or not. I can BS the theme, though)

I started working on it this morning, but have just now decided that it is my Mini-LD game. I’m stretching the rules quite a bit here, though. I want to give myself until Monday morning to make it. (“Monday morning” meaning 6 AM EST on the 7th)

It is a one-button game inspired by One Button Bob and Nano Ninja. It is titled “Foxy Ninja” and is about a ninja named Lola fighting her way up warlords’ palace towers to assassinate them. On each floor, the game’s one button (Either space, C, or the left mouse button) will perform an action specific to that floor’s obstacle. There will be pits to jump over, baddies to fight, and lots of other ninja action, all with just one button! 😀

Here’s hoping…

— Mr. Dude

(As a note: I’m perfectly willing to spend time after Monday morning to work on this, but I will save what I have at that point as the Mini-LD version)

Foxy Ninja – Plans for Day 2

It’s the second day of my early Mini-LD entry, and I’ve got some plans now that I’ve got my base engine in place.

Today I plan to get four types of floor working:

  • Pits
  • Spikes
  • Lasers (Oh yes, lasers in a ninja game)
  • Flames

If I can do that, I’m happy. 😀

Peace
