Ludum Dare Meetup in SF on March 1st!

Hey,

The Ludum Dare Meetup in SF is going to happen!

When: Tuesday, March 1st, 5:30pm
Where: The Food Emporium in the Westfield San Francisco Centre – take the escalator down to the bottom floor of the mall.
Finding Us: We will be directly to the right of the bottom of the escalator. Some of us will have LD T-shirts, and it’s going to be awesome. We’ll eat exquisite food and have polite conversation.

We’re going to all get a plate of food and hang out and eat for an hour or so. It should be a good time! Be sure to wear your Ludum Dare T-Shirt so we can get a swell group photo :)

Also, a few people mentioned wanting to organize some other crazy activities for during GDC. You should post a comment with what your ideas are! I’m sure some of us would love to have even more fun at GDC than we’re already planning on having!

Cheers!
-Phil

I’m not attending GDC, but I’m totally down for a meetup.

Hey, that’s on my walk to work. Easy enough to be there.

hey I’m attending GDC, but I do not have a LD t-shirt :s

I’m not at GDC this year, but I work like two BART stations away. Totally down for this.
01. Mar 2011 · 22:06 UTC
I’ll probably leave work about 5:00pm and walk my way over there. It will probably take about 25 minutes. I’m the guy with the handlebar mustache.

I hope there is enough room down there. I remember we were much larger than anticipated last year.

GDC 2011 and San Fran Thread

Lets talk GDC, San Fransisco, and all things going on Feb 27th-28th and March 1st-5th.

Finally Starting!

Finally it’s weekend and i can sit down and write a game! I’m gonna make a game I called “Tetris is now a fishing game”. I’ve changed the rules that I chosen before so here is my new rules:

Theme: Tetris is now a fishing game
3 Limitations: Game must end in 60 seconds +
All audio must be your own voice + Framerate cap at 5fps
2 Rules: All variable, class, function etc names must be palindromes +
Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

Hope to finish it in 3 hours.

MiniLD24 – Game Done

I made a terrible game about the life of a fish that must avoid an evil red thing. After all, all fish must avoid evil red things, right?

Theme
Fishing

Limitations:
2 colors
Game Must end in 60 seconds

Rules:
Game must be code complete in the first 3 hours, if not, must start over. NO CODING AFTER THAT.

Starting Over

I’m totally messed up the code :(, so I’m gonna start over right now, and at the end I’m going to submit all the versions of the game.

Finished the code

Took little more then 3 hours to do the game module but..nvm, so tomorrow I’ll do the sound, graphics and publish. Now sleep!

Seven-Day Roguelike Contest 2011

Every year, there’s a challenge to make a fully-functioning, playable roguelike game in seven days. For more information about this year’s Seven-Day Roguelike (7DRL) Challenge, you can check out “7DRL Contest 2011” at RogueBasin. There’s also a Facebook event for participants!

The 7DRL Contest isn’t organisationally related to Ludum Dare in any way, but seeing as there are many people here who are willing to subject themselves to suffering make games within absurd time limits, I thought it might be worth the advertisement. 😉

I think an official site would work wonders for this.

Entry cancelled (but the game isn’t)

What with school and some other things that have popped up recently, I (for the second month in a row) did not finish my MiniLD entry. However, I am a HUGE fan of the concept I came up with! Sometime down the road, I will complete this project and remove all references to Tetris so I can legally release it. :]

Roller Derby 20XX – Post Compo Release

Roller-Derby 20XX: Mega Islands of Awesome (my April 2010 Ludum Dare entry) has been rebuilt from the ground up, sponsored and released under a shorter title “Roller Derby 20XX”.

Play via Kongregate (English Leaderboards)
Play via MiniJuegos (Primary Sponsor) in “HD”

I always intended to revisit this game post-compo but it took many months before I actually did anything about it. The talented musical stylings of Amon26 and exquisite pixel-artistry of Paul Veer made the game come to life. As for me, I rewrote a lot of the code and tweaked the controls significantly from the original release.

Actually going through the process of releasing a game, finding sponsorship and distribution was hugely rewarding. I learned so much that will put me in a stronger position if I decide to do another sponsored Flash game. Financially, Roller Derby 20XX was a break-even proposition. I was able to pay the artists and FGL’s 10% cut. Which is fine. The experience was far more valuable to me than any monetary gains.

Ludum Dare has been a life-changer for me. I don’t have much free time and I’m not disciplined enough to spend an hour or two on game development every day. But I can free up a weekend and know that I will have something prototyped after 48hrs. Sometimes these prototypes are worth expanding on.

I recommend to anyone: take one of your compo entries, polish it up and throw it up on Flash Game License. Just experience what it’s like to go through that process.

Total investment in Roller Derby 20XX: About 150 hours. Value gained from the experience? Priceless.

Really fantastic to see this ‘all grown up’ ! 😀 Congratulations!
22. Feb 2011 · 22:15 UTC
I think I’ll take your advice. Does FGL like C++ games? 😛

Seriously, though, great job on this! There was something about the original that made me think you could pull it off.

Ridiculously addictive. I’ve been playing it for about an hour now, and i’m not ready to stop!
24. Sep 2015 · 23:33 UTC
Thank you for this game. I enjoy playing :)

Live Ludum Dare Gamejam in SF on Friday, March 4th!

terry has found a place for us to meet! This is what he says:

“Any indies still in San Francisco, we’re meeting for a jam at the noisebridge hackerspace Friday for the day! We’ll be there from 11am or so.
It’s at 3rd floor of 2169 mission street, near the 16th street Bart station.”

Hope to see you there!

CouchJumper stopped, but I made another game…

I found some game-breaking glitches in CouchJumper, and as I don’t have enough time to rewrite the physics code for the 8th time, I just hacked together a small game called Climber. (Yes, I know this is 13 days after the MiniLD ended)

You’re a small square that needs to survive the onslaught of fishy things. Use just the arrow keys.

And as I don’t seem to be able to submit this to the MiniLD page anymore, here’s a download link:

http://www.weebly.com/uploads/3/6/7/0/3670719/climber.py

You’ll need Python 2.7, and Pygame 1.9.1. You can get them at python and pygame.org, respectively.

Halifax 1917 is back!

Hi folks,

Here’s the latest build of the game :

http://kapokmedia.com/halifax1917/2011_02_26/

It is a test level, for development purposes. No fire in this version, no time limit. But there is a usable ladder, water depletion, a water bottle pickup, and a destructible DOOR!

Currently I didn’t add an axe to the player, but you can mimic hitting the door by pressing SPACE. You can do this from anywhere on the stage… will be fixed soon :)

Fun :) The water spray effect was neat. I had some drops of water fall through the floor though. Also, getting to the game menu was difficult, it wouldn’t come up for me when I wanted it to and I had to force-quit the browser. Not sure if that is just my browser (ff 3.6.13) or not.

Chess Without Turns

I choked during last MiniLD, but I’ve been secretly working on this one for TigSource VS compo. Thanks to Chris (author of player.IO) I was able to create a chess game that has no concept of turns. It’s more of a gimmick than a game, but I uploaded it to Kongregate and I hope that at least some people would play that, so it can get some badges. Anyways, there’s not much to say since it’s still good old boring chess, but if you want to find out, just try it out!

Mini-LD #25

It’s about that time, folks. It’s time not only for a Mini-LD, but a Mini-LD hosted by none other than #ld’s resident moody grump, ME!!

This isn’t going to have a complex theme system, nor a weird “meta” theme. It’s pretty straightforward, actually.

The theme for Mini-LD #25 is…

The Worst Game I Have Ever Made

The objective here is to make the biggest godawful train wreck of a game that you possibly can. Crappy pixel art (Or worse, clip art), nightmarish level design, and a complete lack of cogency are ideal for this challenge.

Mini-LD #25 begins at 12AM UTC on March 12, and ends at 12AM UTC on March 14.

Here is the keynote for this Mini-LD, delivered by former president George W. Bush. (Yes, a keynote for a Mini-LD! I’m fancy like that.) (Edit: Thanks PoV!)

7PM EST On March 11th – 7PM EST On March 13th I think that’s the conversion is anyone needs it. Going to have to think long and hard on this contest, very interesting theme to say the least.

Very funny idea.

I would not be surprised if some people create some masterpieces in the “so-bad-that-its-good” style.

Cool concept!

Neat! Probably a platformer for me, considering I spend a lot of time on that engine last minild and never got the chance to use it for the forces of good.
06. Mar 2011 · 22:21 UTC
What a fun idea! I think this is going to be quite difficult to do.
07. Mar 2011 · 19:22 UTC
I absolutely love this theme!

Definitely gotta make something for it, it’s gonna be HORRENDOUS :)

So basically, we have to make another new Sonic game?
08. Mar 2011 · 01:24 UTC
Perhaps this is an appropriate time to revisit my stick-figure/programmer art eroge idea…
08. Mar 2011 · 14:30 UTC
Any specific rules? Same as the normal LDs?
08. Mar 2011 · 14:45 UTC
Same as the normal LDs, yes. Little more relaxed about submission time, but that’s the only major difference.
08. Mar 2011 · 16:46 UTC
You know, this is really a positive thing. It reminds me of a personal story. Please bear with me for a moment.

Eli, that song isn’t bad at all, haha. The 2nd half especially. It actually sounds like an Aphex Twin or Squarepusher song 😀
08. Mar 2011 · 18:37 UTC
You can count me in :)
09. Mar 2011 · 12:56 UTC
When I first saw the theme I was not that happy about, but it was ok, cause I won’t have time anyway. But second for second I enjoyed the thought of that concept more and more and now the consequence is to work even harder on my alpha release that I can participate this weekend! Cool, doing what I can best “Creating WORST-GAMES” 😀 Oleole!
09. Mar 2011 · 13:14 UTC
This an interesting challenge, and once that actually sounds very difficult… but fun too :) I’ll be up for it!

Can’t wait to see the submissions for this MiniLD.

Damn. I’m torn between making the game I would have made 6 years ago when I first started programming, or using my newfound knowledge to make a game which is a broken attempt at one of my current games.
10. Mar 2011 · 03:55 UTC
Hey, that’s a good idea.

I’m ready to make my “Worst game ever” 😀

yay!
10. Mar 2011 · 07:19 UTC
Ooh, I like this idea. Might join in myself :)
10. Mar 2011 · 16:34 UTC
So what qualifies as bad with regard to this competition?
17. Mar 2011 · 08:28 UTC
Every time I see an obfuscated code, I cry a little inside… 😛
10. Mar 2011 · 17:48 UTC
My first miniLD and programming compo. Hope to finish a bad game 😀

First mini I ever did =)

Thanks a million, MrDude. One of the most inspiring themes I’ve seen.

If we could just be unafraid to make bad games, we might make a lot more good ones.

Ludum Dare on Wikipedia

I created a Wikipedia article for Ludum Dare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludum_dare Please feel free to expand on what we have there so far.  I had trouble digging up results of competitions before LD15 and was unable to find the winners pre LD10.

Cool, I updated the page. Still need results for LD3 and LD8.
07. Mar 2011 · 11:09 UTC
Wow, nice! Good job collecting all that data 😀

By the way, I changed the page for a simpler, easier to comprehend and less redundant table format. 😉
07. Mar 2011 · 16:06 UTC
I don’t want to be a spoilsport, but expect some opposition. Articles need to live up to the notability guidelines on Wikipedia. And in its current state, I don’t believe this one does that.
07. Mar 2011 · 20:31 UTC
That may be true, but it’ll be fun while it lasts, even if they take it down.
08. Mar 2011 · 04:12 UTC
Nice work with the table! I think this article will stick but we do need more non-ludum dare references. I added links to wired and pc gamer media coverage as well as the time laps video info. I like the idea of having a section for celebrity developers, especially those who already have their own wikipedia pages.
10. Mar 2011 · 00:09 UTC
It looks pretty good so far. The page should be changed to Ludum_Dare instead of Ludum_dare. It is a proper name which is always capitalized in typical communications (see even the PC Gamer page as a similar example).
10. Mar 2011 · 18:28 UTC
Speaking of the old contests, if anyone has the code for my two player isometric game from LD#3 “Hannibal’s Cannibals” let me know, I can’t find it any longer. It’s a terrible mess and not a good game at all but I’d like to have a complete collection of my past entries just for sentimental reasons.

Keynote.

Seriously, can I do the next one available? It’s like, your not even trying here. Honestly for the next vacant keynote mini-ld or ld, please let me give it a try.

If you want to do a keynote so badly, host a Mini-LD. That’s how I got to… Make one on a crappy video-making site.

09. Mar 2011 · 04:02 UTC
Well, that’s fine for that reason then. But, the last main ld? Come on now.

Ludum Dare tips please? :)

Hey guys,

I’m going to hopefully participate in the upcoming miniLD #25. This is going to be my first ever Ludum Dare, also my first development compo. 😀
So, I ask you, veterans, one-timers, and generally developers, do you have any tips for a newbie like me?

Thanks in advance. 😀

Here’s some tips I wrote a while ago that still apply:
10. Mar 2011 · 20:51 UTC
One acronym: K.I.S.S.
10. Mar 2011 · 21:10 UTC
And often, the coloured rectangles ARE pretty enough!

Okay, thanks for the tips, good luck! :)
