Terraform OST released + Ratings

It seems as though I can rate games now! I'll be going through the games I commented on (I wrote down my ratings for those games beforehand), and then I'll keep checking out more games to rate.

Also, I've released the OST to my team's entry, Terraform. You can get it here:

Mini-Postmortem for Planetary Garden

PlanetaryGarden_CoverLD.png

Play and Rate

You can download the compiled version for Windows as well as the project with source code and assets at itch.io, and vote / leave feedback on the LD 38 project page.

Ludum Dare 38

For one reason or another I’ve never managed to participate in a Ludum Dare before this past weekend (LD 38). Planetary Garden was made under the compo rules (worked alone, created all new assets, finished within 48 hours of starting). However, I got a late start (3 PM Sat) and did not submit in time for the official deadline, so it’s technically a jam entry.

The theme was “a small world”, and I started riffing on various ideas for many connected small worlds: perhaps a platformer on a circular planet or mini golf where you switch worlds. These ideas didn’t quite jell or seemed out of scope considering compo rules, and incremental games have been on my mind as well, so I ended up going in that direction (tho Planetary Golf seems like it has legs, might revisit it in the future).

Art Style

Entering the compo means that you have to make all of your own art and audio (with some very limited exceptions for fonts and brushes/samples, etc… that are suitably transformed). I’m not a particularly good artist, so I went with a watercolor artistic style that let me leverage materials for most of the impact, and created the actual art as simple RGB masks (outer border, inner border/outline, and fill color). I wasn’t going for realism but just something evocative of watercolors, with variations in opacity and splotichiness generated by a couple of noise samples operating in screen space so it looks coherent across objects.

Final Thoughts

I'm pretty happy with the outcome, especially after a few 'ascensions' of playing. If I had more time it would have been nice to perhaps slowly zoom out or adjust the scale as plants are placed (so when there are few each is larger), as right now the art is tiny and the patterns aren't super evident until a lot are planted, but the current impl. still works well with it being a small world. I still need some more practice to tackle the compo again next time, especially RE: learning to do simple music tracks.

Compo team entries

so far i tested 10 games(yeah europeans morning) but i am shocked. i found 3 games so far(in this 10) clearly made by a team but marked as compo(i did compo so i rate compos). i dont point out anybody cause i dont know if its mistake or not, but shouldnt happen.

pretty sad for me(missed most of my sleep for ld, could been easier if i would do "team compo").

YEAH !!! Rating!!!!!

Sling Ship - Post Mortem

Hi Everyone!

Capture1.PNG

This was my first Ludum Dare and a fantastic experience.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/sling-ship-search-for-a-small-world

Thoughts

I found coming up with the idea for the game was one of the most challenging parts, and would highly recommend looking at the finalist topics before hand and thinking up some ideas. I had actually started two separate games before settling on Sling Ship. I knew I wanted to push the boundaries of what I had done before (very little) and I had never used physics/ropes before.

I ran out of time before being able to implement a tutorial, or any way to convey the story, within the game. I've seen other submission that do this very well. I also would have loved a better UI, and have since considered removing the timer. Soon after I published I recognized that the sound was very loud as well.

I also spent most of Saturday night installing Android Studio so this game would work on mobile, and this cut into game development time. Would highly recommend sorting this out beforehand as well.

Developing a good learning curve was also difficult. I watched a couple of Twitch streamers play the game (https://www.twitch.tv/drazil100) and (https://www.twitch.tv/jenninexus) and saw them struggle to get past the second level. It's easy to forget that if you're the one designing the game (and practicing all the time) that people might not be as skilled right off the bat. Also, because there's so little instructions I can see where that would get frustrating. I also assumed (falsely) that people would gravitate toward a little higher difficulty, but now I'm not so sure. Perhaps some folks (myself included at times) just want to get in, play for a bit, and get out without being fussed with the challenge. We'll see what the Feedback looks like later this week.

Overall I really enjoyed the Jam, and would come back and do another. I feel proud of this game, and am hoping to flesh it out and eventually release it on the Google Play Store (once I get the appropriate assets, and incorporate feedback). I've been playing it all week, and once you get the hang of it, well, it becomes pretty addictive. I hope you all agree.

Feedback on this game is greatly appreciated (it's my first game, so would love both gameplay/technical suggestions)

Rate a Game, Help a Bunny

Yes! It's time to start scoring and rating games and I'm looking forward to a good day of playing everyone's stuff in the morning. I'm always one to rate games as Ludum Dare entries first, games second. I tend to opt for a more constructive approach in my ratings here than I do when reviewing mainsteam games because, to me, this is as much about learning and helping each other improve as anything else. To each his/her own, though - everybody's got their own style.

As for me, I've got some-bunny who'd love some ratings. Try my team's game, Breakout Bunny and see if you can help a rapidly growing rabbit escape his house. We've had some people get badly stuck in the 2nd room, so let me know if this is a problem and if enough people get stuck I'll put a short walk-through for that part on the game page.

Paper Jam!

Paper Jam is a completely hand-drawn platform game that takes place entirely inside a single piece of paper:

All graphics were created by hand on a physical page. This game was created with Phaser.js and a ton of paper and scribbling. The audio was created using Nanoloop on the GBA (music) and LSDJ on the original Gameboy (sfx). All you gotta do is find and destroy five targets in the levels, and not die. There’s a prize at the end for you.

Game page and links and things are all here, I'd love to know what you think! :)

Here's my game. Since I had the monday off, I did the jam instead of the compo this time, and the extra day helped alot.

I used Unreal Engine 4 this time, and had a great experience with it. I used ZBrush for all the 3D assets, and used their tools for automatic retopology and uvs, so that helped speed things up a bit. Still, making the main character and rigging her took the entire first day.

I'm super happy with how the game turned out, and how much I was able to get in to the game. I hope you like it, and feel free to leave comments.

Judging starts! Help our little germ!

cover.JPG

Hello world!

This time we've made a game for bad guys. You control a super cute germ covered by colorful jelly (yes, we're sure it's for bad guys, don't be distracted by cuteness ).

1_colores.png

It's a super resistent germ which has to survive inside a human body. Of course it would try to kill you (you're an evil germ, don't forget it), but you have 4 colorful and powerful skills:

  • Green: Throw a sticky jelly to the walls around you. Then, press left or right arrow to stick yourself to the wall.
  • Blue: Throw a projectile to kill enemies.
  • Purple: Make a quick dash forward.
  • Yellow: Throw yellow jelly on the ground to jump higher.

You would have to fight some body soldiers too. Don't forget you're inside a human body and he doesn't like you. You would be able to fight the cute colorful lymphocytes attacking them but if you're wise, you will learn to disguise yourself to pass unnoticed without wasting jelly. You can avoid your enemies if you have the same color as them!

Remember: Jelly is Life. If you waste all your jelly... GAME OVER

Now you can destroy planets on your browser! Or keep them alive. But let's be honest, who would want to keep them alive?

Playtime (and voting)!

I finally added the cover image to my game Little Mouse Planet. Who wants to play it? Runs in browser, so no installation necessary.

Little Mouse Planet

LD compo submission: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/little-mouse-planet

10 games tested

10 compo games tested so far! That'll have to be all for a while. The quality both of the ideas and the execution of them seems to be high this time, or I might just have been lucky so far :-)

Unfortunately it is an annoyance that there's no sorting and compo/jam categorization on the main site.. There also seems to be more games than usual that have accidentally ended up in the Compo-section that don't seem to be able to switch to the Jam-section post-contents...

Keeping my fingers crossed that the voting-sorting algorithm gets implemented on ldjam.com soon...

Time-lapse of 2nd day.

We didn't make video from 1st day because of tech problems, but 2nd day was awesome. Sometimes I think that my knees looks like my head :P

Yep, don't forget to play and rate our game. Come on, barbarian

Beware The Idiots

Voting season has begun!! Since most of the EU is on holidays today there's no excuse to not play :stuckouttongueclosedeyes:

BTILogo.png

Beware The Idiots is my first entry in LD and I'm sure it won't be the last. Enjoy!!

Test my game?

Yas! The voting is finally here. I would really appreciate if you would like to give some of your time, and rate my game.

Catification is now!

CatLdMoodlets.gif

Hi, we're Demy and @fedoccio and we made this small Catstagram themed game about the Instagram cat's routine.

The beginning

The whole thing started from the couple pieces of paper and the animation of the body. Both of us were not so well with Unity and had to figure out lots of things in process.

CatLDScratch2.gif

If you want to take it easier, make it 2D. But if you want the Nightmare mode, go Isometric.

The whole game looks quite 2D, but wait, how does this fluffy ball goes around the chair?

BackReality.png

FrontReality.png

Well, that's because it's actually 3D.

Did it bring more troubles? Well, yes and no. First of all, I already had a game with the isometric view and the character going around the objects. But I made it from scratch without any game engine on pure AS and it was pretty laggy (see my profile -> Previous games -> Room Chaos Monster).

Unity3D made it way easier and I didn't have to think about tons of stuff.

But there were the side effects too: I had to spend the whole Sunday morning in panic "because I broke the game" and trying to figure out how to organize the room walls in my super alternative coordiantes system. Thankfully, couple hours later it worked out.

If it looks stupid but works it ain't stupid

That's all about the room scene, comment if you have any questions and don't forget to play and rate our game: Caturday is today

Love you all, meow :cat:

Time to rate

We are looking forward to read your reviews.

Den postmortem #3 : pixel art animations

In parallel to illustrating the environment for Den, we had to make little frightened animated men. As we never did pixel art animations in such a short time, we rapidly realized that our habitual creation tools weren't adapted to produce quick rough sprite animations. A quick search lead us to Piskel, a browser-desktop-opensource-freedom app that is probably an obvious tool for a lot of you, but were a amazing discovery for us.

Onion skin, layers, realtime preview, shortcuts, auto color palette, local saves and all-featured imports/exports. It took us a few minutes to embrace it.

|piskelemfall.gif|men/emspritesheet_big.png| |--|--| ||

The men animations are 32x32 pixels, in 8 colors. There is three runcycles, an idle, a fall, a fall reception, a cornered idle, a shouted when cornered reaction, a standing up and taping code.

Two tips were used for the runcycle : the arms were separate layers, allowing three quick variations onto one base. And taking advantage of the limited details, only the half of a run cycle is made : the character always use its left foot. It creates a pretty much fluid cycle for 5 frames :)

The implementation were pretty straightforward. Every states are based on a few inputs (mainly velocity, vertical velocity and desired velocity), the runcycles are switched using a randomized parameter on an enter state of a StateMachineBehavior. The run animation speed is connected to the character velocity, which is slightly randomized for every character.

|menemanimator.png|men/emanimator_run.png| |--|--|

We often duplicated frames in Piskel in order to have a direct control on the animation structure and rhythm. As a result, the files contains multiple data that could have been stripped away. It wouldn't be the most efficient way to make the spritesheets, but in these time conditions and with the microscopic weight of the animations, doing that way allowed us to integrate the animations in one click, without any retouching in Unity.

|Importedempiskelstrong3/em.png|Importedempiskel/strong2/em.png| |--|--|

For the head bang animation, for simplification's sake we choose not to animate the recoil by hand but to tween directly the head position, using parametrical animations driven by AnimationCurves. Some missing time for debugging led us to some spectacular dismemberments possibilities in the release.

Where is mommy - Postmortem

Hey fellow gamedevs,

We are a team of four German students (Faithcaio (@faithcaio), pschichtel (@pschichtel), jQnas (@jqnas), and Rahtainka (@rahtainka)) and we name ourselves Banana4Life.

We have developed the game Where is mommy for the fifth ludum dare we took part in.

I personally think it's our best entry so far.

Title.png

What went right?
  • The game is playable and we noticed no bugs so far
  • We all met up at one place and were really productive
  • We have decided to take part only as a core team (4 persons) and have done more and a better game than the last time with 7 persons
  • We slept a reasonable amount of time (and weren’t completely destroyed after the weekend)
  • We used Unity with Git this time instead of Unity Collab
  • We had even time left at the end and it was all very relaxed
  • We had a lot of fun
What went wrong?
  • We had some problems with the movement controller
What we want to do better?
  • I think we could improve our streaming setup (this time we had some troubles with our streaming server and had no webcam and no microphone)
My personal thoughts

In our team I'm responsible for the music and the sound and my goals were to create the right mood with the background music and sounds and to write and record my second self written song. I think the first goal I well fulfilled and the self written song for the credits I wrote and record in the last five hours. So for this amount of time it has become good. I am very proud of the heartbeat sound which I have made myself completely.

Until the next Ludum Dare I would like to make more music to get more practice with Logic X Pro and recording stuff. Because I have noticed that I get better with every Ludum Dare but only deal with it during the gamejam and I think more practice can never hurt.

I hoped you liked our short writeup.

If you are curious now, you can play our game "Where is mommy?": https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/$23106

or listen to my music: https://soundcloud.com/rahtainka

We would love to get feedback from you!

Greetings,

Team Banana4Life | Rahtainka

P.S.: For the self written song you have to finish the game. It isn't on soundcloud yet

The Last Haven

Let me introduce you a game I've made during the compo.

GIF Big Short 2.gif

The Last Haven is a fast-paced action platformer filled with jetpacks and laser rifles. It is set in a far future, where the Earth is inhabitable, and the last branches of the humankind fight against each other for scarce supplies.

Fight alongside your teammates and protect your station at all cost!

The Robot's Trial

Hello guys, it's judging time!

In my game, The Robot's Trial, you are a little robot girl who can find and equip various modules such as a jetpack, a magnet or a grappling hook. Use them to find clever ways to escape Scraps Island, the prison for malfunctioning robots!
