Hi everyone,

I used the Ludum Dare 38 as an opportunity to develop my very first video game. Judging has started and I would be really happy if you give it a try and leave feedback.

Grow Little Planet! Explore, Collect, Make your home a better place

Hi everyone,

Here is my submission for this LD38 compo. ld38_1.png

Grow Little Planet!

The goal of the game is to bring back materials to your home planet in order to make it evolve. You will have to shoot some asteroids to get some stuff out of it. ld38.gif

I was a little stuck with the theme so I ended with the first Idea that came in everybody's mind : "let's make a game with a small planet!".

Here is the link to the game : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/grow-little-planet

Please don't hesitate to leave a comment as any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

I already seen and rated some great games. It is always a pleasure to see what people came up with!

Since voting has started, here's another shameless plug. It's a short game, plays in your browser. Try it out! (Some annoying bugs in Firefox. Tested just fine in Chrome and Opera.)

My entry: Planet Of The Precursors

Your spaceship is broken. You are on an unknown planet. There is only one way to get home again. Explore the Planet Of The Precursors!

gifs.gif

When i heard that the theme would be "A Small World" i initially decided not to join LDJAM this time since i wanted to do a first-person platformer. Later, i got an idea that you could explore a really small planet, and enter old temples where i could add elements of a platformer. So i joined the jam anyway and this is the result.

Check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/planet-of-the-precursors

Check out my game, please

I know thatit it's very simple one, because I haven't much time. Just kill devils and don't wonder about theme! You can play on windows, linux or everything because it has html5 version. Here I will leave a bunch of screenshots, more you can find on https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/turtleneck

Wow, judging has really revitalized the Ludum Dare. So many entries, I havent seen in the past couple of days are here and profiling again. Nice, after having spent some time on feedback friends I felt like I had seen everyones games who were particulary active. But now there are so many interesting looking games again.

So, here some shameless self plugging LD38_08.png Super Small Worlds

And also visit Restless and Mother Of All Games !

Two super ambitious entries, which have barely gotten any recognition yet.

My Game - Shameless Advertisment Time!

I would love some feedback on my 1st LD game. If you played and rated my game make sure to leave a comment, so I can also check your game out! Remember to be honest! :) Thumbnail.PNG

Super Snowman Spider Showdown Supreme: Post Mortem! :D

uiemTitle/emMenu.png Good Day Guys! Now that judging has begun, we're ready to share our game with you guys.

Our game is called Super Snowman Spider Showdown Supreme. It's made by three people. @TheClintHennesy, @BadScotsMan, and @Kendro! :D

Gif06.gif Downloadable Here (Windows and Mac Available): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/super-snowman-spider-showdown-supreme

Our Design Specs: With the theme: A Small World, we ended up doing a Snow Globe Game. This was a very interesting idea because it was a Defense/Shooter game that capitalized on the three-dimensional space within a Snow Globe. We also had a bunch of awesome ideas to implement.

We wanted the glass to break if you missed. If the glass breaks, spiders come in, making it harder. Some spiders would randomly drop down with their web- making them difficult to hit. SnowmanGameSpecs.jpg

During Production: Fortunately, for the Art, we were able to put in all the necessary assets and animations needed within the limited time span. This means we were able to do a lot of other "extra time" art like Menus, Icons, etc.

Exporter_01.png

The Biggest Challenge: I believe the team struggled with the AI pathing the most. Not only did the orb-shaped globe serve as a base for the spiders to walk on- but also that the orbs was inverted in such a way our characters were inside the globe and not outside. We did various experimenting on how to implement the pathing- and in the end resulted to making the spiders move with splines.

Because of this- we were unable to include the features we aimed to originally have (Glass Breaking and Spiders dropping down.) We also didn't have enough time to implement UI animations smoothly. After trying out the game as well, we realized that the Snowman's animation was not as "responsive" as it should have been. The wind-up time for the Snowman's attack is too long- and it feels a bit off.

Regardless, the team learned a LOT from making this game- and we definitely want to participate on another game jam. The theme just felt very difficult to explore on for this one- but it was still fun in the end.

That's all for our quick, post-mortem.

We're definitely gonna play some games here and there- and we're definitely going to play games that have visited our page and left a comment or so! :D

So please feel free to drop by our game. We're super ready to play yours as well!

A Small Hell - Post Mortem

So here is my somewhat late Post Mortem of my Compo game, A Small Hell. You can try it here, if you have not yet: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/a-small-hell

ld_screen02.jpg

The game: The games goal is to escape an overpopulated, tiny, triangular hell by solving the mystery around your own death. Sadly you can't remember much of it, so you need to interrogate the other dead souls that populate hell.

What went right: I am pretty satisfied with the look and feel of the game. My plan was pretty solid and could have worked out...

What went wrong: I didn't plan for pesky RL interruptions. Also I designed a multiplayer game before even checking the health of my servers. Needless to say, they had issues. I ended up canceling the multiplayer feature, that the game was built around. Players were supposed to remember only small hints of their death and had the ability to leave messages for other players. They would then appear as ghosts in other hells. Scrapping the main feature left me with an unpolished game.

Lessons learned: * check tools before the event starts * plan for interruptions * next time, I will design a game that is featured around one single core mechanic and polish the hell out of it

Lonely Moon

Hello, voting is up! Test my game here : Lonely Moon

Dr Zorongo - A shitty game!

271.gif In our first LD for us, we tried to keep it simple but choosing a good theme. And then we think about poops. It's a 3D action/roguelike game with randomized maps in which you have to travel through toilets to kill all the rats.

Hey guys, are you up for this multitask challenge??

Now that the judging system is up, its a better time to post here again and share with you my new ludum dare entry: Anthill Multitask, a fast pacing game where you have to manager a lot of tasks in a multihill at the same time!

Aim for the better score possible and have fun there! ;D

Any voting and feedback will be returned, as I will play any and all games of people that help me improve my craft by leaving constructive feedback.

Time to play some games! (Finally)

Old school arcade action for me anyone?

Anyone got some old school arcade style pixel art goodness for me to play? Closest thing I've found so far would be supernova, which I thought was very cool https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/supernova.

I'd ask your feedback guys :)

Hello! I would like to ask you guys, to vote my game. You control a small fish in a small fishtank. Every time you bell the ring, you'll trigger something. You have to grow big, to be able to jump out and reach the far left of the room. When you do, you'll understand, that a smallest world could be good too :)

Controls are specified in the game. Please use the standalone version, and disable the antivirus. It's as self extracting stuff, made with winRar, but windows def on win 10 keeps screwing it up.

If you voted, leave a comment with your game, and I'll check it out. :) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/fishy-fish

The Making of Congamoeba: The Amoebic Friendship Simulator

banner.png

Play the game

Hey y'all, Kev here. I want to talk to you about how my team went about the creation of our first LD Jam collaboration, from conception to completion.

Of course I'm also hoping that you will play, enjoy and rate the game.

Brainstorming

IMG_6642.JPG One of our early concepts was to combine some of the possible interpretations of "A Small World", and to have anthropomorphised insects trying to climb the social ladder by making mutual acquaintances. The idea was a bit gameplay-light, and we struggled to find the toy inside the game, even though we all really enjoyed the concept itself.

We had all really enjoyed the idea of anthropomorphising little things, and we took it to an even smaller scale than insects: amoeba. In exploring what we liked about the social aspect of the first idea, we decided the most solid concept in there was that of "making friends". Thus Congamoaeba: The Amoebic Friendship Simulator was born.

Play the game

Look and feel

IMG_6643.JPG Nick did a full A4 page of little blobs with faces on and we almost immediately found our favourites - those with a little emoticon for a face and little more.

movement.gif Nick and Gav worked together until we had something running in Unity that we were happy with.

Play the game

The language

We decided that our gameplay was to be a memory game, using language. To this end, we needed a language. This is where Will came into his element, creating a working language that only uses five different syllables: Screen Shot 2017-05-01 at 12.24.42.png

Something we thought was very important was having real voices creating these sounds, so we all pitched in (and my Wife Kate too), to record verbalisations of these syllables, ending up with a player voice and four npc voices.

We decided that the player should be given some audio cues regarding the language, so Nick worked with Will to come up with some visual concepts that would reflect the meaning behind the syllables.

IMG_6644.JPG Nick's concepts for ways the language could be represented visually.

conversation.gif The conversation interface in-game.

Play the game

What didn't make it in

The main mechanic that we were hoping to make it into the game that we didn't have time to achieve was after a certain number of amoeba in the conga line, you would all merge and grow, and thus be able to talk to bigger NPC amoeba. Perhaps in version 2!

Thanks for reading, I hope it was interesting or insightful, now go play it!

If you have any comments, critiques, thoughts or suggestions, we'd love to hear them. Leave them on our games page or on this post - we'll read them all

Goodluck!

That feeling of accomplishment after finishing something/why I love Ludum Dare

I'm certain a lot of people here understand this feeling. It's hard to stay motivated and dedicated to a project for too long. You feel the initial rush of excitement after starting a project and you start working, but over time that feeling wears down. On some days you don't even feel like working on it. Sometimes the initial rush of adrenaline and excitement floods back, but over time it's like the two counterweight each other on the emotional balance inside of us.

The feeling of never completing anything can be crushing and demotivating, contributing to the lack of motivation that causes the problem in the first place.

FireAlpacaem2017-05-01/em13-43-19.png

~~What is a line tool?~~

But then comes Ludum Dare. It gives you a clear goal and a deadline. The short time you have to make your game is enough to keep you motivated throughout the whole development cycle. And afterwards you can look back and say "I finished a game." And not only that, but you have a chance to get your game noticed and commented on by other people. As small as the game may be, you fully finished it through work and dedication and people talk about it.

It's why I love Ludum Dare. Not only the cheerful spirit of indie gamedevs coming together and having a good time programming and playing others' games, but also the personal effect it has on you.

My game, A World In Her Eye, is the first thing I made in quite a while that I'm actually proud of, so...

Flatnet postmortem!

Third LD. Yay! Hard weekend, it was.

Here is Flatnet!

Front.png

The idea started from a cubic planet which you could travel through with a drill, or just walk by the surface, looking for stuff.

Welp, now the planet has one less dimension, so three times less faces.

It wasn't the amount of work what made me go back to just 2 dimensions, but a design issue. Orientation. It seemed imposible to me to let players arrive at a certain face of the planet from whichever other face without them losing the way. Where is up? Where am I?

Of course, there was plenty solutions, but they came late to me, when the planet idea was already flattened. With good level and visual design, and maybe a rotate action, the issue would've been almost solved.

However, the end result just lies. It's impossible, but logical. Look at the big square in the top-right area:

optimized.gif

There is one in both faces. And you indeed go from one to the other, when, in fact, if you drilled the planet through one of them you should end in the down-right area from the other face.

Convenient. No need for orientation.

Ironically, through Sunday, while the planet got flattened, visuals went from 2D to 3D. This was a rough prototype from Saturday, before the lie was set up, with 2D fake-pseudo-3D gimmicks:

gif-proto.gif

But I felt it was a lot of work for a not so good result, so I spent Sunday learning basic (basic) 3D in GMS2. At the end of the day, this is what i had:

proto3.gif

Not sure if it was worth it for this specific project, but it sure is for future ones!

On Monday, I set up the level, finished the art (not a lot, really) and made the music, which was really fun. The loop may be a bit short, but the game isn't long either. There are two versions of the loop, each face of the flatnet has its own: one is more cheerful and the other is grimier.

Aaaaaand... I think that's all!

Hope you like the game and I'm willing to hear your feedback! ;D

Comment Notifications

I wrote a little webapp called LDNotify that uses the new API to check for new comments on your game and creates a desktop notification to let you know if there are any.

It should work in all modern browsers, and Microsoft Edge*. The notifications do not work on mobile, but I don't think that's a real use case anyway.

The tab with the page has to be open in the background for notifications to be triggered.

I find it useful while rating other peoples games, maybe you do too :)

Three Of You needs votes

Hi people!

Theese little guys needs some votes and comments. :stuckouttongue:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/three-of-you

If you have any bugs or errors or critics, (the bad too) please do say it in the comments.

It's a good way to sort out show-stopping bugs in the engine.

I will play and rate yours in return!

Hello there :)

Please feel free to test my game :

Even if this is not a masterpiece, I would love to have your feedback about it in order to improve myself.

Thank you by advance, and have fun !

Connected World - Page Update

I updated my game's page on GameJolt with some tips in case you get stucked (because in-game instructions are not too deep). The game is short and only HTML5.

You can rate it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/connected-world

LDNotify

I wrote a little webapp called LDNotify that uses the new API to check for new comments on your game and creates a desktop notification to let you know if there are any.

It should work in all modern browsers, and Microsoft Edge*. The notifications do not work on mobile, but I don’t think that’s a real use case anyway.

The tab with the page has to be open in the background for notifications to be triggered.

I find it useful while rating other peoples games, maybe you do too :)

Den postmortem #4 : the beast, the music and the sound effects

One of the numerous precious things on the team (and that we wanted to use fully on Den) is the possibility to integrate music and sound design as a core ingredient of our creation process, thanks to our Hyper8 wizardry.

The beast

The beast is basically a blend of multiples existing animals, a kind of fox mixed with a shrew or a fluffy wolf with orc teeth. We wanted to achieve something thick and dangerous by its size but also soft as a large teddy bear. As we didn't had time to experiment with soft body physics or skinned meshes, we choose to simply separate its body into independent rigid sprites.

|ezgif-3-eebd1fd837.gif|sonemcris/em366.png| |:--:|:--:| ||

The scream sound was inspired by the T-rex as we all know it in Jurassic Park. I don’t know if it's made exactly in that way, but something that seems to work very well was the idea to use a different animal for each frequency. Using deep roarings for low frequencies, like lion's ones, and looking for high frequency in something like bats or a pigs screams. To polish the sound and the rhythm I also used a tool that I can easily modulate : my own voice. I screamed like a fool in my microphone and down-pitched that, to make it big and monstrous.

The music

bandcamp

The music needed to emphase the troubling universe of a confined cave, so we built a specific reverb/delay system to create a meaningful echo that have been used for most of the rhythmic elements. Delays and reverbs repeat and spread only the low frequencies, so every time a sound is being heard again he vanishes a bit more into its dark side. It must be a classic recipe of sound treatment in an OST, but it worked very well here !

tmph264em_1/em.gif

Keyboard notes and some other sound highlight the dark ambiance. A didgeridoo is used all over the track to bring some more mystery, and resonate with the tribal percussions used in the beat. Some kind of scratching sounds are also bouncing between the right and left channel all along. Note that I was trying to make discreet unsettling screams in the background using lion’s roaring, but it became scratching sounds by accident. A lion’s roaring so fucked up by a chain of treatment that it looks like something scratching on the ground and causing some falling rocks.

The music and the 56 sound effects have been made in the middle of everyone, using one of my dying -but most transportable- keyboard, and integrated without so mutch hastle.

SFXlist

As the music was one of the first thing finalized in this few days, we've all been able to work on drawings, animations, integration and code with the music flowing in our ears and inspiring our hands.

Postmortem: Unnamed Space Project

Well, after some much-needed rest it's time for a little memorial for the second Ludum Dare entry we've ever done with @Mindhead.

Check out Unnamed Space Project

As an 180 degree turn compared to Dethroned, this entry is personally a disappointment. The blatant facts of the matter is: - 1) We had, in my humble opinion, several better ideas to work on, but kinda panicked and chose the "easiest" due to presuming that the other ideas took too much work to do correctly - 2) We kinda did not make it in time, as the game was crashing due to multiple reasons at submission time and required extensive fixing in order to get it up to speed. - 3) The end product does not resemble the original idea too well.

To describe the idea in short:

Fly from planet to planet, revitalising and colonizing these tiny barren wastelands with the newest Insta-Grass Pulse Cannon technology installed into your spaceship, and defend the process from angry aliens that don't like strangers. Bullet Hell-gameplay, Tower Defense building mechanics, weapon upgrades, stylized colourful 3D graphics coupled with a banger Synthwave soundtrack.

You can quickly see that only a handful of this actually came to be, starting from planet being a half-cut hemisphere for no other reason than to make things easier to do in a short time.

The project scope was a bit too big for us, and it certainly didn't help that coming in I was already suffering from a rather severe week-long sleep deprivation. Nevertheless, despite the result not being that satisfactory, it worked very well as a practice stretch to design responsive gameplay and 3D assets.

LD38_promo.jpg Animated GIF

  • I spent a lot more time on individual mechanics this time, like customized physics for precise controls. I put effort in designing things modular so that Entities, Controllers and Weapons would be extendable, reusable and work under the same hood. This cost me time though, possibly too much since I had little to spare on the actual content in the end, and by the end of the Jam things started breaking down as I quickly tried to tack stuff in together. End result was that the game crashed in several different steps and was practically unplayable without doing a sum of bugfixes to it, albeit having pretty good systems underneath.

  • I didn't get to make Camera Shake FX stuff, better UI, and most of all, all custom shader work (there was a lot of that up in the TODO lists) and other visual stuff that I was really looking forward to were totally left out of the equation.

  • Of course, I did the most unlikely thing and almost totally missed all audio stuff. I was able to tackle up two short loops in the final hours of the Jam. That, considering that I'm a musician and sound technician first and everything else second, is pretty horrible in itself.

However, all this underlying API I made works very well in giving me the controls to extend this further if I deem it interesting enough (just like how I said I was going to do with Dethroned, eh :P). Some of the missing features I've already implemented in a Post version like Camera Shake n' stuff, so I'll post that in the game page at a later date.

That's things in a nutshell. TL:DR; I basically got trampled by the amount of work in an idea that didn't sit comfortably with me. Hopefully next time we'll spend the hours in a more elaborate idea, since that would feel more rewarding even if it didn't get finished.

Voting has arrived!

Been so busy working on mine and @spelos game that I forgot to write blogposts. Anyway, I'm off to play ALOT of games now. Can't wait to see what people have come up with.

Ready for the judgering!

This is my first entry for an LDJam and I must say that it is quite the experience. I had a lot of challenges trying to make things work since I'm pretty new to programming, my main skills are about the visual and audio aspects of gaming.

I've been rating all the entries I'm coming across and pretty much all of them rock. I'm impressed by the skills of the contestants.

The Kontinued Development of K.R.A.B.S.

Hey Everyone,

you might remember our game K.R.A.B.S., a multiplayer experience about battling for resources and domination of an arena.

Here it is if you need a reminder: Krabs2.png

Well we would like to tell you that we were so proud of our game that we are continuing development of it; we will be refining the already present experience, as well as adding new features. We are currently working on AI for a single player mode, plus controls that allow the player(s) to tweak the experience to their satisfaction; round time modifiers, championship length, alternate rules and the like.

We are still looking for feedback on the core experience however, so feel free to give the game a play and give us some comments!
