Demon Rabbit Solitaire is part memory puzzle, part card game, part hungry demon rabbit.
This GIF isn't from the current version but this is the best looking one I have!
You match 2 cards on the table, then you play a card from your hand. If you can't match any more cards on the table, you lose a life. It mixes in strategy with your typical memory puzzle game!
The rest of the post is about the design process of the game! It'll make more sense if you play it first! For web and Windows at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/demon-rabbit-solitaire.
Starting with an idea!
I started the jam with a few ideas, one of them was a vague idea about sacrificing cards. You would sacrifice two cards of the same value to play a more powerful card. And at some point the powerful cards would fight a demon, or something.
I also knew that it would be a single-player card game with a demon somewhere, so I called it Demon Solitaire.
Prototyping!
I started making the prototype! It had a table of random cards, face down, and you could flip two cards from it. Flipping the cards was fun so I continued with it!

Then I added a hand with random cards to the prototype.
I started by allowing any card in the hand to be played. I thought I would later add code to check if the card in the hand added up to the cards on the table. At some point here I saw the holes in the idea of sacrificing to play more powerful cards. It would be a boring numbers game where the cards only got stronger. And the cards aspect would only disguise the memory game, not improve it.

I gave that idea up early and instead kept it so you could play any card. This solved a couple design issues! One, there's a chance to not get stuck. Because I was lazy, the table cards were random with no regard to match-ability. Being able to choose what to add to the table fixed that problem. Two, it provided a clear goal. When I tested the game, it was fun trying to set up the cards to avoid a dead end table! So the goal became solving tables. Three, it added purpose to the cards. Plus, I didn't have to change much!
Finalizing the game!
I did end up making some changes. In the prototype, you'd select a card from the hand first because the value of the card was going to be important. Now you match cards on the table first, then play a card in whatever empty spot you like. It made the game flow a lot better! I also changed the amount of cards on the table to be more manageable, because of the focus on clearing tables. And I added lives and a score at the end.

So that's the gameplay, but what about the rabbit? I learned there's an actual solitaire variant called Demon, so I wanted to change the title. And figuring out how to draw a demon was going to take too long so I made a demon rabbit that talks to you. I think it added some flavor to the game!
Again, if you want to play it, it's at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/demon-rabbit-solitaire. There's a web and Windows build. Thanks for reading!
