THE HYPE WAITING FOR THE THEME IS REAL!

I'm in

Ready 2 win

The aftermath of 42

It's that time of the year again right? Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to take part in this one. I will be spending part of my weekend away and this together with travelling will take a lot of time. Maybe some small simple game but unlikely.

Anyways, since that is out of the way now, here's the reason why I am writing this post.

Less (2).jpg

Less

I've created game called Less during Ludum Dare 42. Gameplay wise it was based on one of my older ideas, but after this year the narration, theme and motivation behind the game changed completely.

Since I have trouble to open up about basically everything, I hoped this game would help me achieve this and express myself. Unfortunately that never happened. Right after LD42 ended, I felt even worse and I basically dropped everything. Unfortunately that meant I never showed the game to anyone around me. I never uploaded mentioned timelapse, and also, I never played other LD42 games (which also caused the game to not be very visible for others).

I would like to change at least some of those things right now. So I searched my pc and uploaded mentioned timelapse.

The entire timelapse can be found here.

I would also like to play your games from either Ludum Dare 42 or even previous ones, so if you've created some hit me up with the link please . I'll try to have a look during the weekend.

If you would like to check out Less you can find it here.

And to all LD 43 attendees, Good luck and have fun!

I'm in this time

Is my first ludum dare that i will do something (in the last ludum dare my computer die so i didn't do anything :( ) and i will use Unity for Game Engine, Photoshop for Graphics and Bosca for SoundFX and Music.

I hesitate to say I'm In but...

I completely forgot LD was this weekend and thus have no time set aside for it. That said, if the theme sparks some creativity in me, then I'm In. Maybe I could make it a #10MinuteGame.

First Ludum Dare!

This is my first Ludum Dare (Not Game Jam) Cant wait for it! Good luck to all!

Here I am again

Hi ! Here I am again, hope this one will be finished.. I'm alone for this one, good luck to y'all ! :D

I'll be entering

I'll be entering for the 3rd time, yay. This time I'm going solo though. This jam I'm gonna try make a game in Godot, I haven't actually made a game in it so it's gonna be fun :)

First Game Jam

This is our first game jam that we participate in! We are planing to use: Unity2D C# Photoshop/Illustrator Audacity

Hope everyone was as much fun as we are going to have! Happy developing! (PS: To all from Europa, only 3 hours until we can go to sleep :sleepy: )

Starting to get excited

HYPED to find out the theme for LD43! Hopefully we get something that makes my creativity explode! :) I'm planning to do another Jam entry, altho I'll only have about 2 days to work on it since I have to work for 10 hours on Monday. But, based on the timing, I should have maybe 45 minutes after work that day to add any final polish, then the submission hour to get it turned in, so that should give me plenty of time to make something at least! I look forward to seeing everyone's ideas and entries!

After over sleeping to a comical extent, it begins!

I'll be pushing into all the ideas I have and seeing I can use the theme... now to figure out what that is.

ninja edits: I'll be using godot on linux. Got it setup last night but obviously its still gunna have some learning curve to it. I'v never made anything with the intent of calling it a game proper on my own but excited to try!

Tips for Newbies

Am I qualified to write this up seeing as how all 3 of my previous entries were pretty trash? Probably not but dammit I'm going to do it anyway.

Here are some tips I recommend to those that are new right so you can have an enjoyable LD experience.

Sleep and take breaks: Having a good sleep schedule is super important. A lot of newbies think that in order to be successful you have to stay awake for almost the entirety of the 48 hours. This is one of the worst things you can do. It's been scientifically proven that sleep deprivation can lead to stress and a lack of productivity. Try to still maintain ~8 hours of sleep/night over the course of the jam. It's also a good idea to take breaks over the course of the jam instead of spending all program in front of your computer. The number of times I've been stuck on a bug then went on a break, and came back with the solution is unreal.

Eat well: A lot of people think it's time to load up on sugar and caffeine. The issue with this is you WILL eventually crash and this will harm more than it will help. Try to eat good healthy meals throughout the day, your body will thank you.

Avoid overscoping: This is the problem everyone has. You come up with a great idea for the theme and 24 hours in you realize you aren't going to finish. A good thing to follow is this: Once you come up with your idea, cut everything that isn't absolutely necessary, then cut that list down again. You should end up with a list of maybe 3 or 4 items at most, this is the absolute most your game should have. Your game should aim to do one thing really well instead of a lot of things.

Prioritize: Firstly, get your mechanics perfected first. It's better to submit a playable game but the graphics are just cubes over a good looking but unplayable game. I also recommend you do the things you know will be more complex first followed by simpler things.

Keep it short and sweet: Ensure your game can be played in 5-10 minutes. You want to make sure that someone playing your game can get a good feel for the gameplay in 5-10 minutes at most. Try to also keep your game easier. You don't want people to rate your game poorly because it's difficult and they get frustrated. Keeping your game short and simple ensures the maximum amount of people playing it.

Stick to what you know: Try to use tools you know how to use. It's not a great idea to decide to learn a new engine while doing your LD. I recommend you experiment but try experimenting with new mechanics or game ideas instead of your tools. Make sure your tools are updated and ready to go before the jam begins.

Get Involved: LD (especially if you're doing it solo or compo) can sometimes feel lonely. Try streaming on Twitch. Share your progress on here or on Twitter. Join the Discord or IRC channels. LD is more fun when you can chat with others who are also doing the same thing as you.

Give good feedback: During the play and rate stage, try to play as many games as possible. Don't just play the games and give them stars, but actually take time to write down feedback in the comments. Don't be afraid to give constructive criticism. If someone plays your game, return the favour!

Good luck everyone!

3 more hours

Excited to start, working on some of my old projects to warm up.

Im In! First Ludum Dare, Excited!

This is my first Ludum Dare. Never made a game in 48 hours before. Hope things go well. Streaming Here:

https://www.twitch.tv/mousebatteries

The programs I will be using will consist of:

Unity Piskel Photoshop Blender Bosca Ceoil

MouseBatteries

Possibly alone for this jam

I usually have a great team, but it's a busy time of the year.

I'll definitely try to deliver a pretty small game. Maybe using Game Maker, Bitsy or the engine a friend made for me; I don't feel that confident to use Unity yet.

Good luck to all jammers!

Prarie Snail Games is in!

We are using - Typescript (Javascript) - PIXI.js - Our custom PIXI.js engine layer - Bfxr - Some magical music recording software I don't understand? - Aseprite - Maybe an iPad with procreate / pixaki? - Audacity?

I like to get the website and basic menu from our game engine up and running before the contest starts so I'm not freaking out on Monday.

1st Game Jam, with p5js

Hello there Game Makers,

As many of you it'll be my first Game Jam, i'll be using a group of JavaScript libraries called p5.js, that let you draw and manipulate some nice shapes and stuff extremly easily in the browser, stuff like... games ;)
