Daily Recommendations Potential Delays

Hey everyone!

Downed lines have left me without internet, so there may be delays on my daily recommendation gifs until it's back up properly.

I'm still going to make them while offline though. I'll just upload them in bulk when my internet is back.

Need a little help

As you know, there are only 9 days left and I've been travelling a lot, so I didn't get a lot of time to rate games. I will start rating them as soon as possible, but I'm afraid not many people will still be rating. If you want, you can lend me a hand and rate my game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/shootball-1

you know the spiel

as with the last post, if your game has less than 20 ratings, feel free to post it in the comments.

My game finally has enough votes, but a lot of games still don’t. Among those are:

as always, they can all be found at https://ldjam.com/games/danger/all and https://ldjam.com/games/zero/all

Please show your support to all the games you can by helping them reach enough votes for a score.

Game Updated bugs fixed...

Most of the bugs are fixed plus more feedback is added during gameplay so it would not look like a bug but instead as what we expected but multiplayer is still not added unfortunately... link https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/chick-n-die

Almost There! Just a few more

Might as well advertise my horrible entry...

So, i only have a single vote because i didn't advertise my entry. That's because it didn't turn out how i wanted it at all. I joined compo but couldn't finish it, so i had to send it in to jam. The game is mediocre, but i still want feedback to see where i can improve. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/bulletland again.png

Art Process Part 2: Actor Sprites

Previously: Art Process Part 1: Getting Started

Silhouettes & Proportions

First we will be needing some car sprites, so @daanvanyperen has something to move across the screen as he does his mystical programming magic. The player controls a tow truck rather than a racing car, so I pull up a Google image search for those on my second monitor and just get started on a silhouette. Since this is a simple shape, I decide to add basic lighting pretty early on as that will add much of the shape definition.

graphics-post-car1.png

Silhouette blocked out, now to fix the proportions a little to make it cute and look less lanky, and add an outline for contrast.

graphics-post-car2.png

Nice, I am pretty pleased with this. But @daanvanyperen needs it to fit inside a single 32x32 sprite. Righto!

graphics-post-car3.png

There we go, and I threw on some neutral colours so the car doesn't interfere with the colour matching, and made it even cuter still with bigger tires.

Now for the racing cars. I figure that merely the difference in colour would be sufficient for players to tell the cars apart, and make a series of the same racing car in five different colours, but @daanvanyperen points out that we need different shapes as well. Colour alone isn't enough, some people pick up on shape difference more than colour. I struggle with this increase in workload a little, but after reiterating some cars once or twice I have five fairly distinct car models.

graphics-post-npc-cars.png

The orange and red cars both have similar shapes, but by tearing the roof off the red car, it feels a lot more unique.

Crops in Space: Life After Ludum Dare

| | | |-|-| |titleemshrunk.png |crew/emshrunk.png|

Kate and I are super happy with the reception we've received for Crops in Space. It was my first visual novel and her first time working on game art, so the positive reception has been amazing. Thank you to everyone who played the game, and especially to those who rated and left a comment. Your feedback has been super helpful.

We're continuing to work on the game by fixing bugs, smoothing out some rough edges, and expanding on the farming simulation mechanics, as well as further polishing the audio and artwork.

If you want to keep up with future progress on the game, sign up for my newsletter and follow the game on itch.io. We'd love to have you take this journey with us!

This year's ludum dare was kind of odd, I wasn't overly fond of the theme, but seeing all these games made me restore my faith in creativity. Without further ado, I tried to pick out more obscure games for my best category list:

Need 20 Votes To Hit Par!

Hey there, friend! How about three holes of side-scrolling golf brawling action? More tactical than an RTS cooking show, with more injuries than a zombie horde card battler!

Golf War

is only a few votes shy of 20. Please give it a whack!

Type 'n Jump - more than 100 votes!

Thank you all for your feedback and for giving us more than 100 votes!

We hope that our players enjoyed our game Type ‘n Run. 🙂

If you haven’t played it yet, give it a try here! 👈

Also, people seem to like to share their performance on our game Type ‘n Jump but that’s just unbelievable:

😲 * Someone finished our game in 83 commands and 02:08! * 😲

ezgif.com-optimize (3).gif

To put that in perspective, the average number of commands used to beat the game is 200, in 10:00.

My personal best as the programmer of the game is 86 commands!

Do you think you can beat it?

Remeber to type * HELP * if you get stuck somewhere!

Need 5 more reviews, give it a try

A knight in a wizard’s snooker game

kritaem2018-05-06/em15-44-36.png

D'oh no, I said Wizsnooks. That's how I call Wizard Snooker

So you call it Wizsnooks despite the fact this is obviously a knight.

Okay, this is time for a more abstract post. We’ve made some posts before about Wizsnooks, our roguelike loot plundering pool hybrid, and the links to it all are at the bottom. But we haven’t touched the idea of the setting yet. That we waited too long to get to it reflects how it happened in the development cycle: We pretty much left the title and setting development to the end.

On the first night, we brainstormed like crazy, with the idea of a pool game with enemies and loot being the outstanding one. With that in mind, I made the cue ball, a sword, the enemies, and we went from there. The first weapons were all swords.

kritaem2018-05-06/em16-16-11.png

During the last day, I had the duty to make the logo of the game. The problem was that we still had no name for it. The brainstorming began shortly, with names like Medieballs (because of the setting of fantasy enemies and weapons). To add more flavor to the game, I was asked to make some hands for the cue ball, with armored gloves to further reflect the setting of the game. However, @RobinHoodPT told me that, since the hit sounds were lightning bolts, it’d make more sense if the hands were wizard gloves instead.

That’s when it hit us: The actual setting of the game. Our game would be about wizards meeting at a tavern to play a magical game of pool. Hence, the fire pits, enemies and loot. It sounded fantastic. But we still needed a name. We actually ended up with a lot of them. Here’s a list, including some that didn’t even have anything to do with wizards:

  • Bil Liard in Pool Land
  • Lord of the Orbs
  • The Elder Snooks
  • Tavern of Sorcery and Snookery
  • White Orbs Tavern
  • Poolgeons and Dragorbs
  • Billiard Dweller
  • Snook&Pool’s Tavern
  • Wizorbs Tavern of Potions and Billiards (Quickly rejected because Wizorb is an actual game)
  • Witchery, Poolery, Adventurly
  • Magic-8 Lounge
  • Witchcraft Inn
  • Orb of the Pool
  • Snorb & Bilial’s Tavern
  • Mana Snooker
  • Tavern for Magic Cats who play Magic Pool
  • Wizsnooks (Which kinda sounds like a cat's name, but we still went with it)

The list is… not complete. There’s many variations and even some that didn’t have to do with wizards at all. The story of this development is not necessarily complete. But one way or another, we finally had a name.

TitleLogo.png

That pretty much covers up the story behind the name. I quickly made up more things like wizard hats, more variety of weapons, and so on. There wasn't much time left to go full wizard, but we still managed.

Version 1.0 is nearing!

Pike_promo.png

We finally managed to fix all the buggy animation going on in the kitchen scene! And also we can finally fish and fillet the pike that even made it to our title screen. Be prepared for cutscenes, instructions (shame on us for not managing that in our LD build!), better mechanics and more content!

Until then, try out the LD build of Haiti Kitty if you haven't already! Or don't, we won't force you!

Have a lovely day everyone!
