See you at Ludum Dare 42 !!

Hey guys!

I have little activity this time because I have a baby who is 1 month old. This was an added difficulty to complete my entry hehe.

lastPBP-ld.gif

This is my “TO DO” list that I could not finish:

  • Improve the bounce prediction (accuracy and effects).
  • Improve the visual feedback on ball hits.
  • Make some items, like buttons on the wall, to open rooms when you hit them with the ball.
  • Create a boss. (I was thinking about a boss with a shield, and you have to aim some items to hit him, and dodge some balls at the same time)
  • Secondary action, deflect balls with right click.
  • Improve the AI, who can dodge some of your balls.
  • Fix some enemies who rotate in certain places when dead.

I'll try to play more games but I think this is my last post in the main page this edition. So... see you at Ludum Dare 42!!

Thanks for playing my game and for the great comments you wrote for me!

Fave Games of Ludum Dare 41: Part 7 of ?????

137e0.png

Honest Dan's Trout is honestly one of the most honest to goodness Gameboy experiences I've played on this Ludum Dare. The limited color palette and well-crafted sound effects took me back to those nostalgic days before backlit screens and rechargeable batteries. Not does this game look slick but it's hella challenging- in a fun, fast paced way, not a old Gameboy platformer way. My old person brain was quite entertained by the brick breaker paddle and tetris block rotation all at the same time. A great puzzle game that relies on a simple, clean mechanic framed in a neat, aesthetically pleasing package! Honest Dan's Trout gets five trouts out of five. (why is it called trout???)

InvadTris 1.8 - much improved web experience

If you played InvadTris in the last few days, if you only played the HTML5 build, you may have noticed a variety of issues, such as glitched sprites, lack of sound effects, slow performance, and keyboard press event detection issues.

I've released an update, 1.8, which addresses most of these issues. The game should now be a lot more playable. Except in IE11, which is still slow and doesn't handle audio for some reason. I don't have Windows 10, so haven't been able to test it on Edge, so if anyone has played it in Edge, I'd love to hear how it ran for you.

I'm a bit torn on whether I should continue to try to support HTML5 browsers with my GameMaker projects, due to the number of limitations and issues that browsers seem to have running GameMaker projects. It seems that most people prefer not to download a Windows-native build and run it, but if the result is that more people play my games in the browser, only to have a markedly inferior experience as a result, it doesn't seem like a very good trade-off. The best way to play the game remains to download the .exe and run it as a native Windows application. Web play seems to be acceptable in the latest Chrome and Firefox, at least on my hardware. YMMV.

Other improvements in recent builds include a much-improved Tetris control set, which now includes wall-kicks, and sound effects for rotating the block and for 4-line clears. I've also added stats tracking for the Tetris pieces. I'm continuing development on this until I have reached what I feel is the ultimate expression of my concept, and this may take me a while to achieve, but it's been very enjoyable for me to work on this. Currently, the play experience is slightly disjointed, as many have commented it feels like playing two games side by side rather than one unified game, but as I continue to develop this game towards its ultimate expression I believe that this will be taken care of.

I hit 20 ratings almost within 24 hours of uploading my 1.0 build, but since that time my play rate has declined dramatically to a trickle of maybe 1-2/day, and as of today I've still received only 38 reviews. Which is not bad, but I think this game is good enough that it deserves more plays. The ways in which Space Invaders and Tetris gameplay compliment each other is interesting. Both feature things that move downward from the top of the screen and which need to be cleared before they overwhelm you. It's unexpected that their designs should echo each other in subtle ways like this, but they do, despite being from seemingly incompatible genres, but it's a delight to me that my work is revealing these similarities, and that the two games mash up so well.

Still In Need of Ratings-Also Thought of Possible Continuation

Ignore the fact that I have placed a negative view on my own game in the game's description. I had a thought of completing what I wanted to do for the game post-jam and I want to know whether anybody would think that would be a good idea. If you have time, please give it a test and let me know what you think!

Jacksepticeye plays "Barry Has a Secret" (post-jam version)

Here's jacksepticeye playing the post-jam version of the game "Barry Has a Secret".

The post-jam version is gameplaywise same as original, with one major bug fix, some fixes & tweaks and an ending. (jam version was done in 3 days and now post-jam version is that +1 day polishing & fixing).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23sRUricc

When I started creating this small game for Ludum Dare one of the things I was experimenting was the "pick up items" system. I tried 3-4 different camera-angle-pickup-physics options. I had controls where you could move pieces exactly where you want them to be. I tried another camera angle where you can see easier where the item is going. I tested "distance of pickup point from the character".

I eventually landed with a weird-top-near-the-shoulder angle, and very very strange pickup system where object floats in the are bit like magician would be handling it.

There was two big reasons for this weird-funny-pick-up-item systems:

1) This game has "Puzzle" and "Dexterity" challenge:

First of all, if you could place objects exactly where you want the game becomes "simple" in the sense that it's no longer exercise of "dexterity" (if you will) but only a "puzzle" (where do i put these items). When the character's hands are wiggling the game is now "puzzle + dexterity". You need to think "where do i put these items" (the puzzle aspect) but also about "how to get there". The carrying system adds randomness: you cannot be 100% if you get the item or all the items in the place where you want. So that's number one for goofy pickup system: it's part of core gameplay.

2) Goofy things increases odds of getting Youtube coverage

The pickup system and hand waving is pretty funny to watch (at least for few times until the joke wears off ;). There's already several funny videos by awesome people where they laugh at the way Barry waves his arms. It's hilarious to watch. I think whenever there's chance for something fun, there's chance that youtubers make even more fun videos.

Goofy hands / pick-up-items-system was one reason that increased chances of getting coverage from youtubers to play the game and share it in their channels. (Goes without saying: there's incredible amount of luck involved)

Thanks for reading.

Ventureville: Post-Jam version in the works

Thanks everyone for all the votes! We've got over 20 now, which is great to see.

But in the meantime we've been working on some of the features that didnt make it during the Jam along with a lot of tweaks and improvements overall for a post-jam release of Ventureville. Ive been taking note of feedback from friends and the LD community for the upcoming changes.

Ventureville v2.0 also has the much needed (and now properly implemented) farming features. With 'Tom' tomatoes and 'Benedict' cabbages able to be grown (among other things). I foresee a 'Benedict cabbage-patch' achievement in the future.

Also if youve ever wondered how cows and sheep come into the world, this gif reveals the secrets (it involves vegetables and punching) Gif here: https://i.imgur.com/wXMSIsq.gifv 😜

Building is also implemented, bandit AI greatly improved (erm... https://i.imgur.com/WcNs7VC.gifv) along with a small novel worth of other tweaks, fixes and improvements.

Will be posting soon (probably tomorrow)!

Our entry version of the game is at the following link, with WebGL available if youre still yet to check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/ventureville

Until then, any other votes would be great to see! Its been a great Ludum Dare, looking forward to seeing everyone's results!

Post-Jam-Verison is out now!

I know that i'm too late but... WEB VERSION IS HERE

Harvest Hook: Upcoming features!

Hi space farmers!

13666.gif

After receiving tons of feedback for the little game we put together on the LD, we have decided to implement a few more features in a post-jam version.

That said, I won't post any updated version until the rating period ends, but here's a little teaser of those features:

  • Trees with fruits and more planet variety!
  • Weird alien vegetables!
  • Machines to make space-farming-with-a-grappling-hook easier!
  • Character upgrades!

Feel free to try out space-farming-with-a-grappling-hook (better name needed for this noble profession) in the current version and tell me what you think of the game! Features you'd like to see, things you liked, improvements, criticism or essays about the impossibility of farming tubers without a proper atmosphere. Anything would be really appreciated.

Here's a link to Harvest Hook, if you want to try it out. There's a webgl version, so you can play it on your browser.

See you space cowboys!
