Success = Fail

Two weeks have passed and I've had the chance to think. The game I made has more content and it is more polished than any of my previous entries. I am happy with the way the game looks. I am happy with the concept. I am happy with the sound track I managed to compose. So in many ways Golf N' Grenades has been a great success - but at the same time it was a failure.

SuccessFail.gif

This was my 6th consecutive Ludum Dare and I've been taking pride in balancing making games during the events and at the same time spending time with my family and continuing with training and/or hobbies. If you've followed any of my previous entries, I've been riding motocross, celebrated birthdays, and spent a fair bit of time with my family and friends during the Ludum Dare weekends.

It would be my wife's birthday on the Monday following Ludum Dare and we had agreed that I would be taking part in LD and celebrate the birthday the following weekend. As I began making my LD41 game I was very ambitious with what I wanted to achieve and this time around it took more time than I should have allowed myself.

Although I uploaded the game with half an hour to spare before the deadline, I had used a lot of time this time around as the Timelapse shows:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOSlkF98v8I

I spent 36 hours and 45 minutes making my game and the other 11 hours and 15 minutes were sleeping, sitting with my son who had a stomach bug, playing with my kids, buying birthday cake stuff, bringing out the bouncy mat for the kids. I didn't do any training or motocross. I spent very little time with my family compared to what I have in the past. Leading up to LD41 the entire family was ill for about half a week with the same bug so I didn't get a chance to go shopping for my wife's birthday. Even though we agreed to postpone the birthday celebrations, I have always made preparations with the gifts, decorating the house, and going through all of the motions that I birthday should have.

I submitted my game which took about an hour to get the screenshots, videos, metadata and uploads sorted. At 4am I began to bake the birthday cake which took about an hour. The house is in a complete mess due to the ongoing renovation and we currently have no kitchen so I had to make the cake in our basement at a little sink that we have down there. I went to bed at 5.30am.

After one and a half hours of sleep my alarm went off at 7am and I got the cake out and we begun to celebrate what was meant to be a postponed birthday (I learned that even if celebrations are postpone, you are still supposed to celebrate to some extent on the birthday =). Due to the sickness and "over commitment" of making my LD41 game I didn't have any birthday presents this time. My "only" plan had been to give my wife what I got for my birthday last year which was a tandem skydive, but the night before when I told my children what I was going to give my wife, their mother, for her birthday my daughter who is 6 burst out crying because she was too scared and she at all costs didn't want me to give her that for her birthday so there I was. A cake. No presents. A house full of dust without a kitchen. On the birthday we went out for a meal but I was so tired that even that was a fail.

This time I learned the biggest lesson of any Ludum Dare so far. Family must always come first. If it is a birthday, I will have to skip Ludum Dare. I can't put the amount of mental focus into my game like I did this weekend if I am to do it in our home - it's not fair. For future dares I will yet again balance in much more social aspects and I will spend more time with my family and not be so distant. For some dares, if I want to try to achieve as much as I possibly can, it will be best off that I go away for the weekend to a retreat away from the house, where I can totally commit to the event that I, for some reason, so desperately want to challenge myself in.

Take care everyone - have fun making games! I hope this post is of some use to someone to avoid the mistake I made.

To sum it up. (Game) Success = (Social) Fail this time.

Need some rating for RoadRover

in need of some rating, the game still needs some fixes when I have time. Any input would be much appreciated...

Ratings Needed for Super Chess Card Wars

If you can spare a moment, you might enjoy taking my entry for a try. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/super-chess-card-wars

banner2.png

It's a mash-up of the card game "War" and a fighting game with a chess piece roster. The html version even has AI added after the compo ended if you'd like an opponent. Post your game in the comments so I can play and rate yours.

Thank you for your time!

Ooops....

Sorry I was gonna post a post mortem video, but the video is not up until tomorrow. I don't know how to delete posts.

Fave Games of Ludum Dare 41: Part 6 of ???

dungeonsolitaire.gif

Dungeon Solitaire is a great mix of concepts where you play a solitaire-like game of cards against yourself to the ultimate goal of using all the cards possible. You play the cards to build a dungeon full of all kinds of traps and parameters like spinning saw blades, extra gravity, winding passages, and more. Its a fiendishly simple mechanic that's quite challenging in play. As a compo entry, this game has homemade assets too and, frankly, we kind of think that the simple, vintage style graphics helps cut back on the clutter-potential this game has for an overall pleasing visual style. On a scale of 1 to Getting Rid of that Last Stubborn Saw Card at the Very End, this game gets an 11.

untRACEable: Post-Mortem

untraceableemscreenshot1/em640x360.png

Now that it's been a few weeks since the jam, I feel like I'm able to take a few steps back and look at what went well and what went wrong with untRACEable. (In case you're wondering, the pun neatly straddles both categories). I'll likely add to this list as feedback rolls in, but here's a start.

The Good

  • Using OpenGameArt made things look better than they would have done otherwise.
  • The game has a title screen, multiple levels and it's possible to finish it.
  • The car is difficult to control at speed, which makes the levels challenging (to some).

The Bad

  • Not customizing the art means the concept is confusing -- why are the racers being stealthy?
  • I wasted hours of development time learning how to implement title screens and level transitions in Unity.
  • The car is difficult to control at speed, which makes the levels boring (to others).

What I've Learnt

  • Bad programmer art that makes sense is better than good art that doesn't.
  • It's important to practice the basics between jams.
  • Play-testing should happen before the jam, not afterwards!
  • You should always add screenshots to your Ludum Dare entry page.

With the above in mind, I'm going to task myself with improving untRACEable between now and the next jam. It'll help me to practice, and with a few tweaks to the art I hope to make things more coherent. Watch this space!

As a final note... untRACEable is still in need of ratings. If you could find it in your heart to play it and give me some feedback, it would be much appreciated! Thank you again to everybody who has given feedback already; it's been very useful.

Postmortem "Tetratower"

This is my second postmortem after the one I made for A Platformer for Ants. This time I partnered with Nat Morillo and Joan Carles Vegas to make Tetratower, a mix between a Tower Defense game and Tetris.

You can play, rate and give feedback here! tetratower.gif

I try to learn something with every jam I participate on, and this time working with a team remotely was the challenge. I woke up at 8:00AM to see what theme was chosen this time. Combine 2 Incompatible Genres. It wasn't my first choice. Well, it wasn't even a choice really. Not my kind of theme. I wanted to combine 2 game genres, so I started thinking. Nat, Joan Carles and I started talking trough Discord and after a lot of combinations one felt nice to all of us, Tower Defense and Tetris. The idea was simple, complete and felt doable without stress.

After the chat, I started prototiping the Tetris part of the game, I felt like it was the most hard of both. In the meantime, Nat and Joan Carles started with the concepts of the game. I really like working with great artist like them, because the "This gonna be ugly AF" feeling is out of the equation. The problem here is that I liked everything they gave to me, I'm very bad at criticism when art is the subject. But, look at that, it's awesome.

photoem2018-04-21/em16-06-56.jpg photoem2018-04-21/em19-26-44.jpg

In a few hours I had the Tetris part of the game done and working. After that, I started with the wave system and the enemies. That part was easy, because it's not my first rodeo with Tower Defenses. Also, this time I felt like sharing, and I streamed part of the development on Twitch. It was fun, but I think it slowed me a bit.

After resting a bit I integrated the art and animations. That part was also easy, I work everyday with 2D sprites and Spine animations and was a piece of cake.

After that, the only thing to do was polish, polish and more polish. After finishing the menu, I improved the animations of the enemies after receive damage, I tried to solve some bugs caused by the moving columns and played a bit to improve the difficulty curve.

We had a fight one moment for a stupid thing we didn't talk about too much. That was my fault, I wasn't stressed but during jams I'm very salty. I don't want to make stupid mistakes and this makes me and awful person sometimes. After resting and talking, everything was ok (I hope :<).

The last day everyone was happy with the result, but some of us felt that something was missing or could be improved. The lack of time with this or not testing it enough was the problem. After all, we were 3 people but only me played the game during the development. The idea for the next time is let the others play the game sooner in order to have time to improve more things.

Overall, I'm very happy with the result, the game is BEAUTIFUL and looks complete. The gameplay is very basic but is polished enough. It's easy to modify or add more waves if we want to. Wihtout doubt, working with a team was a great decision.

What went well - Awesome team. - Beautifull AF. - Solid but simple gameplay. - Streamed part of the development. - No stress.

What went wrong - I provoked a stupid fight. - Lot's of things we wanted to do got cut of the final build.

Tools - Unity 2017 - Visual Studio 2017 - Photoshop - Spine

That's it. I hope this was useful to someone. I had a lot of fun making this game, with luck the same you'll have playing it.

Thanks for reading!

Guerrilla Gardening - Post-Jam version in progress

GGemIndicatorsAndCA/emsmall.gif

I have made a start on the first of two post-jam updates to my game, Guerrilla Gardening. The first update will mostly just involve polishing the jam version based on the feedback I've received, though there will be some gameplay changes. The second update will be a bit more comprehensive, and take the game in a more story-driven, RPG-lite direction.

You can read more about my plans, and follow the development, on itch.io. I will also be posting about most major changes on my twitter. I hope to have the first update out at around the time the Ludum Dare results come out.

But if you're looking for games to rate for now, don't bother with mine. There are still over 50% of entries without enough ratings to qualify for results, so I encourage you to play some of those instead!
