In need of a few ratings!

laststanddel.png Due to some personal issues I couldn't play other games as much as I wished, but now I'm doing my best to play and rate. If you have some spare time, please, take a look at this crazy game that mixes RTS and Bullet Hell! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand

Making Tower Defense Artsy Again

It seems there are a lot of Tower Defense games around this time - I believe I've played at least 5 during the testing phase. And while this might not be the most creative choice, it surely is a good one for all of us who like the genre. Playing a mix between Tower Defense and some random genre is a bit like hearing another band's cover of your favorite song.

While I've played everything from Match-3-TD to a TD Golf game, my personal Tower Defense version desperately tries to be artsy. In the Paintball kind of way, by shooting colored blobs at an evil army of canvases, of course.

The development was really fun and engaging, and I highly appreciate all the great feedback I got. After a two year break it was really great participating again, and I'm looking forward to return in August.

The game is written in HTML/JavaScript and can hence be played in the Browser. For those of you who are not yet tired of testing games, feel free to play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/$89252

Touting Shutin and seeking non-violent games to play!

I'm finally playing a bunch of LD games after having a bunch of computer trouble, so I'm inviting everyone one last time to try my game, and I will try to make sure to play yours after seeing your comments because that makes it a little easier for me to find games to play outside of the front page and the games page that I might miss otherwise.

Feel free to leave a comment here too! As long as it's not another dating sim or a particularly graphic game, I'm all down! Especially interested in playing non-violent/non-combative games!

Play Shutin here!

Bachelor Thesis Deadline in a few hours!

Sitting right now in a small room with 5 other people putting the final touches on our bachelor thesis. The project was to build a smart phone game based on formal logic. I have definitely applied many of the lessons I have learned through my 6 ludum dares to this project and vice versa. I noticed a huge difference in the way I structured my code, well, before the deadline came crashing down on me and everything turned to spaghetti.

Anyways, due to the bachelor thesis, I haven't really had time to play and rate game. Please check my game out anyways, as I am quite happy with it!

Game Dev Tip#5

If you get stuck in adding a feature, skip it and move to the other one.

It literally helped me in making my game where I was thinking of adding rhythm in my game but couldn't so I left it and now you can see it wasn't required

Last Day!! Please check out our game if you havent!

Check out and rate our topdown-platformer-experimental-icecave-puzzle game! We would be very thankful if you took some of your time to play and rate our game before the voting ends, THANK YOU!

Time for some last-minute game-playing!

Over the course of the jam, I followed anyone whose game caught my eye and I wanted to play... and then I never actually played a bunch of them! Oops! I'm rectifying that now, and I'll try and get through as many of them as I can over the course of today and tomorrow. If you want me to play your game as well, feel free to link it in the comments and I'll get round to it if I have time!

PlatSCII Post Mortem and History

Hey. This is thanks for 100 votes

So everyone has probably done one of these by now, but it's my turn.

If you haven't played PlatSCII, here you go. Though you probably have, since all we do is spam ads.

It was 7:00 MDT, and I was at Boston Pizza, with @evan-juricic, when the theme was announced. I also lost 5$, since the food got there as soon as it was announced. With no Wifi at the restaurant, and no cellular to spare, I couldn't get the theme. That's when one of the people at my table goes on Twitter and sees the top post: "Combine two incompatible genres". We pulled out our napkins and started doodling. We came up with a puzzle shooter game, where you had a limited number of bullets, and had to do the angles to kill all the enemies with the least amount of bullets. @evan-juricic tells me that people probably don't want to do on-the-fly trigonometry when they are playing a game, so that idea was put on the back burner.

After we finish our food, I head outside and call up @connell. He pitches the text adventure platformer, and we are immediately hooked. We start throwing out as many ideas as we can, and ended up filling three napkins with doodles and ideas. And it wasn't even past 8:00. By the time I get home, @connell was discording me like crazy, and so were all my other friends. One of them had the idea for a Doom mod where you're Jesus throwing crosses at demons. We said no to the Christian Shooter. I had half a tile set done by 9:30 and said that was good, and went to sleep.

Next day, I get up at 7:00, watch some Pokemon, make some tea, and hop on my PC to finish that tile set. Once that's done, I get on discord to answer my 1500 messages. @connell had the typing mechanics done, and was asking me for 200 more assets. I worked for 3 hours until @evan-juricic finally woke up at 11:00, not having anything done. We send him our concept level and gameplay ideas and get him to work producing music.

By mid day we had the game working! You could jump, move left and right, and do combos! We were pretty ecstatic, and we begged @connell for an alpha version to try, but no dice. We kept working for the rest of the day until we had a nice point to stop. The next day, it was all wordage. Signs and signs. First, I made a start page, then credits, then commands, then the tutorial (Which was supposed to go to the first level). More and more signs, the level design. Finally. This was my golden hour. I pumped out level after level until @connell couldn't keep up! We eventually added four of my levels into the game.

Beginning of day three, I get up, hop in the shower, get dressed, grab my laptop, and head for school. When I get to class, I boot up Ubuntu and... Forgot to back up my project onto my laptop, so I can't work on it. CRAAAAAAAP. This happened to almost every other person on the Ludum Dare Discord. With lack of anything else, I try to learn GIMP in the 20 minutes of free time I had. I kinda did it? I still don't know how to resize my brush. None of that work made it onto my PC when I got home, so I was starting from scratch. After a couple of near death accidents involving me not saving on pyxel edit. One hour until submissions and we don't know how to add the executable image, or have the text box refocus after hitting enter. Half an hour later, after me clicking randomly in Unity, I find out we were in debug mode the ENTIRE TIME. I still feel like an idiot about that. The text box thing, we fixed that for each command in the level, but we ran out of time and didn't implement it into level changes, or start up.

One we submitted, I was literately sprinting around the block in joy! Our first Ludum Dare game was entered! We were already getting some very supportive comments! Thank you again for that!

After a couple days, publicity slowed down for PlatSCII, and we needed a post-jam version. But not a little one just for bug fixes, no no no. We needed a massive update with all new features and, what my Christian Shooter friend suggested, a level editor! We got to work.

During the period of not doing anything, I was watching Randomised User's videos on Ludum Dare games. I was scrolling through my Youtube suggested when his latest video caught my eye: We were in it. I started screaming at @connell through discord about it, as well at texting @evan-juricic furiously. we made it, the big time! We were pretty exited! We needed this post jam version to be great!

Just a couple days ago, we released it. @connell even commented on the video saying we released a post jam version! We were pretty exited. Most importantly, our publicity stunt was in action. We would have people make levels in the level editor, then feature them on our game page! It didn't work. Only one person made a level for us. Still, we have people making levels!

Now, for the post mortem:

Likes:

  • We had our game working!
  • It was actually fun!
  • @connell and I actually finished a project while working together! We usually seperate on it by day five of a project, but this time the work was spread out evenly and we got it done! (Even though I would have liked to write a bit more code.)

Dislikes:

  • The text box wasn't auto-focused when we changed levels.
  • The plus(+) between characters feels weird to reach that far on the keyboard.
  • There was one MASSIVE glitch in the jam version where if you beat the game, go back to menu, and replay the game, you wouldn't have to hit all the bombs to kill the boss, it would immediately prompt you to press d.

Every problem in the jam version was fixed in post, but now there are even more problems! I will never be satisfied.

All in all, this was an incredible experience and I can't wait for august! Same team, better game!

The future of this project:

There's a thing where I live called a Maker Fair, where all the junior high kids come and show off stuff they make. It could be music or it could be a cardboard suit, anything, really. We will make a PlatSCII 1.0.2 to show off!

Hey, thanks for reading this post mortem and history.

Last day of ratings!

Post Mortem: City Blocks Ending Explained!!!

143d6.png

"Do you find yourself with too much time? Need to relax? Can’t get rid of that gnawing feeling that something is wrong? Play City Blocks! City Blocks is a fun twist on a timeless classic. In City Blocks you must steer the ball in to the bricks without letting the words stop you. Genres: Slight-Horror, Typing, and Block-Breaking"

What is a "slight-horror" typing & block building game? What’s up with that gnawing feeling that something is wrong? Were you, the player, dead the entire time? This post-mortem will explain the ending and, as such, we strongly encourage you to play our game first and see if you caught what I am about to explain.

When the team asked me to come up with the direction, description and details of the game, I took a step back and asked myself: “what novel idea could we do with the concept?”

(1) Arguably, the closest game is “Typing of the Living Dead.” Typing of the Living Dead is arguably a cult-classic game that combines the over-the-top zombie outbreak premise with a typing simulator. In that game, the game prompts you to type words to fend off the zombies. Many of the words you are asked to type are relevant to the situation.

(2) I am a bit of a horror game and ARG enthusiast. I am a fan "Petscop" and a web-series called “Catghost.” Whenever “Catghost” releases a new YouTube video they include a video game that delves deeper in to the meta-plot. Many of the video games use text, sometimes as part of the gameplay, to cryptically hint at a greater plot.

Rather quickly, I decided that the game should go down a “Doki Doki Literature Club” route of psychological horror and pitched the idea that the game should be an analogy about texting while driving then dying in a car accident. The bricks serve as the road, or main objective, while the words serve as a text, or the main distraction. Hence the name of the game: you died driving down the city blocks.

To capture this feeling, the main-menu is designed as a cell-phone. The main-menu of the game has a glitched “voice-mail” button that foreshadows the importance of this voice-mail to the plot.

Some of our words provide a buff or a benefit like a slower ball speed or large paddle. Many of “buff” words are somewhat difficult to type and are to subtly emphasize to the player that these words are meaningful and relevant.

“cruise control” “support” “ambulance” “brakes” “kinetic” “air bags” “trapped” “justice” “lifeline”

Many, if not all, of the none-buff words are connected to the plot: driving, texting, car accident, death, purgatory.

“qwerty” “rage” “send” “gas” “steer” “gaze’ “test” “stress” “fade” “defeat” “route” “car” “sin” “grace” “seat” “tear” “hex” “abstract” “ravage” “weary”

We included words that are text-speak or shorthand to emphasize the cellphone/texting part of the plot:

“jk lol” “=)” “nm u?”

We used the words to expand the plot a bit more. A child was involved in the accident and the player-character had a wife. This is strongly suggested by several of the words:

“rearseat” “child” “accident” “wife” “marry” “love” “dear”

Lastly, there are glitched words to try to re-emphasize the importance of the voice-mail and the overall trapped in purgatory theme:

“1 new message” “trapped here” “failure. failure. failure.” “look. at. the. ball.”

(Note: the game has many more words about a hundred altogether)

Should the player reach the high score, they are treated to a win-screen. The win-screen is the main menu, but cracked, and now they can access the voicemail. The voicemail is a female voice that says:

“Hi Hun just got your text don’t worry it can wait”

Strongly implying that whatever you were texting about with your wife, at the time of your death, was completely pointless.

Even among the creators, we differ in regards to some the finer details. For example, @Injured’s interpretation of the plot: the player-character is unaware and trapped in purgatory and must remember/accept their death to leave purgatory. The player died in a car accident while they were texting and driving with their wife about a stupid argument. @Legavroche's interpretation is that the player-character is still alive at the start of the game but by the end of the game is dead (hence why the cell phone menu starts as uncracked but ends as cracked).

And that’s the plot of “City Blocks” explained. Overall, the team had a lot of fun in our first LDJam. We encourage people to try our game and judge for yourself on whether we were successful in our plot or if you have a different interpretation (and try to spot the one Petscop reference and one Catghost reference). Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and being such a great community!
