In need of a few ratings!

laststanddel.png Due to some personal issues I couldn't play other games as much as I wished, but now I'm doing my best to play and rate. If you have some spare time, please, take a look at this crazy game that mixes RTS and Bullet Hell! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/last-stand

Making Tower Defense Artsy Again

It seems there are a lot of Tower Defense games around this time - I believe I've played at least 5 during the testing phase. And while this might not be the most creative choice, it surely is a good one for all of us who like the genre. Playing a mix between Tower Defense and some random genre is a bit like hearing another band's cover of your favorite song.

While I've played everything from Match-3-TD to a TD Golf game, my personal Tower Defense version desperately tries to be artsy. In the Paintball kind of way, by shooting colored blobs at an evil army of canvases, of course.

screen005.png

The development was really fun and engaging, and I highly appreciate all the great feedback I got. After a two year break it was really great participating again, and I'm looking forward to return in August.

The game is written in HTML/JavaScript and can hence be played in the Browser. For those of you who are not yet tired of testing games, feel free to play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/$89252

Touting Shutin and seeking non-violent games to play!

I'm finally playing a bunch of LD games after having a bunch of computer trouble, so I'm inviting everyone one last time to try my game, and I will try to make sure to play yours after seeing your comments because that makes it a little easier for me to find games to play outside of the front page and the games page that I might miss otherwise.

Feel free to leave a comment here too! As long as it's not another dating sim or a particularly graphic game, I'm all down! Especially interested in playing non-violent/non-combative games!

Bachelor Thesis Deadline in a few hours!

Sitting right now in a small room with 5 other people putting the final touches on our bachelor thesis. The project was to build a smart phone game based on formal logic. I have definitely applied many of the lessons I have learned through my 6 ludum dares to this project and vice versa. I noticed a huge difference in the way I structured my code, well, before the deadline came crashing down on me and everything turned to spaghetti.

Anyways, due to the bachelor thesis, I haven't really had time to play and rate game. Please check my game out anyways, as I am quite happy with it!

Game Dev Tip#5

If you get stuck in adding a feature, skip it and move to the other one.

It literally helped me in making my game where I was thinking of adding rhythm in my game but couldn't so I left it and now you can see it wasn't required

Last Day!! Please check out our game if you havent!

Check out and rate our topdown-platformer-experimental-icecave-puzzle game! We would be very thankful if you took some of your time to play and rate our game before the voting ends, THANK YOU!

PlatSCII Post Mortem and History

Hey. This is thanks for 100 votes

So everyone has probably done one of these by now, but it's my turn.

If you haven't played PlatSCII, here you go. Though you probably have, since all we do is spam ads.

It was 7:00 MDT, and I was at Boston Pizza, with @evan-juricic, when the theme was announced. I also lost 5$, since the food got there as soon as it was announced. With no Wifi at the restaurant, and no cellular to spare, I couldn't get the theme. That's when one of the people at my table goes on Twitter and sees the top post: "Combine two incompatible genres". We pulled out our napkins and started doodling. We came up with a puzzle shooter game, where you had a limited number of bullets, and had to do the angles to kill all the enemies with the least amount of bullets. @evan-juricic tells me that people probably don't want to do on-the-fly trigonometry when they are playing a game, so that idea was put on the back burner.

After we finish our food, I head outside and call up @connell. He pitches the text adventure platformer, and we are immediately hooked. We start throwing out as many ideas as we can, and ended up filling three napkins with doodles and ideas. And it wasn't even past 8:00. By the time I get home, @connell was discording me like crazy, and so were all my other friends. One of them had the idea for a Doom mod where you're Jesus throwing crosses at demons. We said no to the Christian Shooter. I had half a tile set done by 9:30 and said that was good, and went to sleep.

Next day, I get up at 7:00, watch some Pokemon, make some tea, and hop on my PC to finish that tile set. Once that's done, I get on discord to answer my 1500 messages. @connell had the typing mechanics done, and was asking me for 200 more assets. I worked for 3 hours until @evan-juricic finally woke up at 11:00, not having anything done. We send him our concept level and gameplay ideas and get him to work producing music.

By mid day we had the game working! You could jump, move left and right, and do combos! We were pretty ecstatic, and we begged @connell for an alpha version to try, but no dice. We kept working for the rest of the day until we had a nice point to stop. The next day, it was all wordage. Signs and signs. First, I made a start page, then credits, then commands, then the tutorial (Which was supposed to go to the first level). More and more signs, the level design. Finally. This was my golden hour. I pumped out level after level until @connell couldn't keep up! We eventually added four of my levels into the game.

Beginning of day three, I get up, hop in the shower, get dressed, grab my laptop, and head for school. When I get to class, I boot up Ubuntu and... Forgot to back up my project onto my laptop, so I can't work on it. CRAAAAAAAP. This happened to almost every other person on the Ludum Dare Discord. With lack of anything else, I try to learn GIMP in the 20 minutes of free time I had. I kinda did it? I still don't know how to resize my brush. None of that work made it onto my PC when I got home, so I was starting from scratch. After a couple of near death accidents involving me not saving on pyxel edit. One hour until submissions and we don't know how to add the executable image, or have the text box refocus after hitting enter. Half an hour later, after me clicking randomly in Unity, I find out we were in debug mode the ENTIRE TIME. I still feel like an idiot about that. The text box thing, we fixed that for each command in the level, but we ran out of time and didn't implement it into level changes, or start up.

One we submitted, I was literately sprinting around the block in joy! Our first Ludum Dare game was entered! We were already getting some very supportive comments! Thank you again for that!

After a couple days, publicity slowed down for PlatSCII, and we needed a post-jam version. But not a little one just for bug fixes, no no no. We needed a massive update with all new features and, what my Christian Shooter friend suggested, a level editor! We got to work.

During the period of not doing anything, I was watching Randomised User's videos on Ludum Dare games. I was scrolling through my Youtube suggested when his latest video caught my eye: We were in it. I started screaming at @connell through discord about it, as well at texting @evan-juricic furiously. we made it, the big time! We were pretty exited! We needed this post jam version to be great!

Just a couple days ago, we released it. @connell even commented on the video saying we released a post jam version! We were pretty exited. Most importantly, our publicity stunt was in action. We would have people make levels in the level editor, then feature them on our game page! It didn't work. Only one person made a level for us. Still, we have people making levels!

Now, for the post mortem:

Likes:

  • We had our game working!
  • It was actually fun!
  • @connell and I actually finished a project while working together! We usually seperate on it by day five of a project, but this time the work was spread out evenly and we got it done! (Even though I would have liked to write a bit more code.)

Dislikes:

  • The text box wasn't auto-focused when we changed levels.
  • The plus(+) between characters feels weird to reach that far on the keyboard.
  • There was one MASSIVE glitch in the jam version where if you beat the game, go back to menu, and replay the game, you wouldn't have to hit all the bombs to kill the boss, it would immediately prompt you to press d.

Every problem in the jam version was fixed in post, but now there are even more problems! I will never be satisfied.

All in all, this was an incredible experience and I can't wait for august! Same team, better game!

The future of this project:

There's a thing where I live called a Maker Fair, where all the junior high kids come and show off stuff they make. It could be music or it could be a cardboard suit, anything, really. We will make a PlatSCII 1.0.2 to show off!

Hey, thanks for reading this post mortem and history.

Last day of ratings!

Post Mortem: City Blocks Ending Explained!!!

143d6.png

"Do you find yourself with too much time? Need to relax? Can’t get rid of that gnawing feeling that something is wrong? Play City Blocks! City Blocks is a fun twist on a timeless classic. In City Blocks you must steer the ball in to the bricks without letting the words stop you. Genres: Slight-Horror, Typing, and Block-Breaking"

What is a "slight-horror" typing & block building game? What’s up with that gnawing feeling that something is wrong? Were you, the player, dead the entire time? This post-mortem will explain the ending and, as such, we strongly encourage you to play our game first and see if you caught what I am about to explain.

When the team asked me to come up with the direction, description and details of the game, I took a step back and asked myself: “what novel idea could we do with the concept?”

(1) Arguably, the closest game is “Typing of the Living Dead.” Typing of the Living Dead is arguably a cult-classic game that combines the over-the-top zombie outbreak premise with a typing simulator. In that game, the game prompts you to type words to fend off the zombies. Many of the words you are asked to type are relevant to the situation.

(2) I am a bit of a horror game and ARG enthusiast. I am a fan "Petscop" and a web-series called “Catghost.” Whenever “Catghost” releases a new YouTube video they include a video game that delves deeper in to the meta-plot. Many of the video games use text, sometimes as part of the gameplay, to cryptically hint at a greater plot.

Rather quickly, I decided that the game should go down a “Doki Doki Literature Club” route of psychological horror and pitched the idea that the game should be an analogy about texting while driving then dying in a car accident. The bricks serve as the road, or main objective, while the words serve as a text, or the main distraction. Hence the name of the game: you died driving down the city blocks.

To capture this feeling, the main-menu is designed as a cell-phone. The main-menu of the game has a glitched “voice-mail” button that foreshadows the importance of this voice-mail to the plot.

Some of our words provide a buff or a benefit like a slower ball speed or large paddle. Many of “buff” words are somewhat difficult to type and are to subtly emphasize to the player that these words are meaningful and relevant.

“cruise control” “support” “ambulance” “brakes” “kinetic” “air bags” “trapped” “justice” “lifeline”

Many, if not all, of the none-buff words are connected to the plot: driving, texting, car accident, death, purgatory.

“qwerty” “rage” “send” “gas” “steer” “gaze’ “test” “stress” “fade” “defeat” “route” “car” “sin” “grace” “seat” “tear” “hex” “abstract” “ravage” “weary”

We included words that are text-speak or shorthand to emphasize the cellphone/texting part of the plot:

“jk lol” “=)” “nm u?”

We used the words to expand the plot a bit more. A child was involved in the accident and the player-character had a wife. This is strongly suggested by several of the words:

“rearseat” “child” “accident” “wife” “marry” “love” “dear”

Lastly, there are glitched words to try to re-emphasize the importance of the voice-mail and the overall trapped in purgatory theme:

“1 new message” “trapped here” “failure. failure. failure.” “look. at. the. ball.”

(Note: the game has many more words about a hundred altogether)

Should the player reach the high score, they are treated to a win-screen. The win-screen is the main menu, but cracked, and now they can access the voicemail. The voicemail is a female voice that says:

“Hi Hun just got your text don’t worry it can wait”

Strongly implying that whatever you were texting about with your wife, at the time of your death, was completely pointless.

Even among the creators, we differ in regards to some the finer details. For example, @Injured’s interpretation of the plot: the player-character is unaware and trapped in purgatory and must remember/accept their death to leave purgatory. The player died in a car accident while they were texting and driving with their wife about a stupid argument. @Legavroche's interpretation is that the player-character is still alive at the start of the game but by the end of the game is dead (hence why the cell phone menu starts as uncracked but ends as cracked).

And that’s the plot of “City Blocks” explained. Overall, the team had a lot of fun in our first LDJam. We encourage people to try our game and judge for yourself on whether we were successful in our plot or if you have a different interpretation (and try to spot the one Petscop reference and one Catghost reference). Thank you all for the wonderful feedback and being such a great community!

Final day to rate

We're now in the final day to play and rate games. Please, focus your ratings on https://ldjam.com/games/danger/all and https://ldjam.com/games/zero/all

I can't make you, but it would be great to have as many games as possible get scored.

I am not going to post any games today, but feel free to post yours in the comments if it still needs ratings. Instead I will go through some things that will help you get ratings in future LDs.

  1. Make sure to link your game when you turn it in. I saw so many submissions that had either removed the link after they felt it wasn't good enough or never linked the game in the first place. This should be a no-brainer. If there is no link, then no one can play your game, i.e. you will not get ratings. Also, never remove your link all together. This is a game jam; games are not expected to be high-quality.

  2. Provide as many pics and vids of your game as you can. If all you have is a title and a description, very few people will want to play it.

  3. Make it playable online. This is not necessary, but it will incentivise people to play in that they won't have to download anything.

  4. Avoid unusual platforms. It is a great challenge to make a game for another platform other than computer, but this creates a high barrier of entry for anyone to play the game, and most people are unwilling to go through the necessary steps just to be able to play a game jam game. Platforms you should avoid include VC consoles, anything that will require an emulator (e.g. NES), Android and IOS, and Linux (I am including this because it isn't as mainstream as Windows and Mac). In other words, make your game as accessible as possible.

  5. Rate as many games as you can. Rating more games makes your game more visible in the system.

  6. Advertise (i.e. post your game in the posts and comments of games that you have rated). I know this feels awful; I hate to do it too. But, it really does help your game get noticed. Just don't be "false" when doing it. I saw comments on games with no links that had fake reviews of just, "awesome game! Here, try mine at ". This just makes you look like an ass. If you are going to post a link to your game in the comments of another game or post, make sure that it is either invited or that you have legitimately played and rated the the other game and provided good feedback as well.

Thanks for making this such an enjoyable LD. I would be lying if I said that posting a list of games every day didn't get tedious. I just hope that through doing it, I was able to get more games noticed.

Need some more ratings :p

illustration_V03300x-100Small.jpg

Hi everyone, we just need some more ratings to reach 20, if some people feel free to test : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/rocket-pet Thanks ;p

while(ludumDare==exists) life=good;

Omg, making a game, then playing and rating a bunch of others was such a blast! I love this community and how supportive and creative it is. I played a decent number of games I hope are made into full games because they aren't just a gimmick that cleverly used the theme, but are rather truly well thought out, smartly designed games that have a lot of potential.

I also want to thank all the people who have rated and given feedback on my game. I am grateful for all the positive comments and for the constructive feedback that will help me refine this game and any future games I work on. It really means a lot to me.

I will no doubt be participating in future jams and hope to have more time to play even more games and to also make a post-jam version of my own game that is a little more refined based off the early feedback I receive. I tried to do that during LD41, but I just didn't have enough time, unfortunately.

Of course, before I bid adieu I must promote my own game and hope you give it a try (if you want).

Favorite Games from LD 41

As is my tradition (when I remember), I've gathered some of my favorite games I played during this jam. None of these are perfect by any means, but they were all interesting enough in some way that I thought I should showcase them.

Crystal Library

13cbe.gif This game pegs itself as a horror roguelike. Players must search for books in a library guarded by crystal "librarians" who in turn search for the player. The combination of the random generation and stealth mechanics was interesting, and it gave me quite the adrenaline rush to hide behind shelves as the librarians passed. It could use a bit of work selling the horror mood, but it's quite fun as is.

Darkade

13673.jpg Another horror game, this time mixed with breakout. Though the gameplay was fairly annoying (involving hitting specific points with a bounce), this game truly made me feel fear. The retro aesthetic was spot on, and the simulated glitches felt authentic. The chiptune music is just off enough to feel frightening. This game brought out the mood.

As Vast as the Sea

12ea6.png I don't really like VNs, and this one didn't change that much. The writing style set it somewhat apart from the few others I've played. It's listed here, however, because of how well it sold the undersea mood. The music was relaxing and oceanic, and the backdrops were beautiful. Check it out just for that.

Dungeon Solitaire

10d1a.gif In Dungeon Solitaire, players must play all the cards in their deck, with each having an effect on the challenges they must navigate. This game had some of the most unique gameplay I've seen, and it stood out among the many card/something games submitted. With some more expansion on its idea and a stronger aesthetic (maybe something like Hand of Fate?), I'd pay for this.

I hope you've found some of these interesting.

Finally Got Around to Updating Graphics!

Untitled Project (Time 0em00/em06;06).png

I have been so swamped at work, I've barely had time to really polish this game. And while I still have a lot of work to do, I think it's moving along pretty well!

Also, I just recently installed Flash Professional, because I decided to go the vector route on this project, and I am not used to it at all. I got so accustomed to After Effects and Illustrator, and while it has some elements of both, it is its own beast entirely.

I hope to finish what I have and make at least a decent "Distracted Driving PSA" out of it. Maybe even market it to schools and include a facilitator's guide (that is part of my day job to write those, after all. May as well put that skillset to good use outside of work too). I don't actually know where I would host a game for educational use, other than teachers forums, but I'm hoping to go to the Games for Change Festival this June, so maybe I can ask around there!

graphics.gif It's still frustratingly hard, but I've gotten slightly better with practice

I still need a couple more votes, so would love if you guys could check out Breacard (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/breacard), and then in turn I'll give your games a rate/comment as well (just leave a comment on my game with a link to yours).

Cheers

I need ratings like beyond belief.

After competing in ldjam 41, I basically just completely forgot about it. Just today it passed my mind to come back and there is less than 24 hours left of rating, and I only have 2.

please come help me out and rate my game.

Our podcast about Ludum Dare and our game Scoop

In addition to making games, we also do a podcast about game design. We also talk a lot about how we teach and learn things and barely ever stay on topic. Our most recent episode is about Ludum Dare and how we made our game Scoop. Unfortunately this time around our lives have been pretty hectic, so we didn't get to play enough games to get 20 ratings, but that's okay.

SideQuestsLogo.jpg

Check us out on iTunes, Sound Cloud, or wherever you get podcasts.

You can also check out episode 6 which is about last Ludum Dare and our game Starbage Man!!

Wrapping up

I have 6 games left that I'm planning on rating before deadline. So far I've rated 72 games, and my game has been rated 49 times, which I think might be a record for me.

I had such a good time with this jam. I'm looking forward to August.

If you haven't tried InvadTris yet, try to get in under deadline if you can. I love feedback!

Escape - Behind the Scenes

Go back a few days from the beginning of Ludum 41.

The Week before Ludum 41

The date is April 14th, 2018. At this point, I had no clue what I was going to do for Ludum Dare 41, and the theme choice was down to the top 100 options if I remember correctly, However, very quickly, I had decided that whatever I was going to make for my Ludum Dare 41 entry, I wanted it to be a platformer and it was going to be made in the program Construct 2.

whatImDoing.png

To ready myself for this project, I began making a rough platformer, that I might have a better understanding of Construct 2, because the last time I was working in its environment, I was working on the unfinished project, Fair Maiden, almost an entire year beforehand, August 9th, 2017.

DGx4CD2VoAAaBfk.jpg

This rough platformer was only just a practice run, and never really got past what you see in the first picture, however, without that refresher, I feel Escape would not have turned out as well as it did!

The Hours before Ludum

Having only prepared by creating a rough platformer in Construct 2, the themes were down to the top 10 choices, and I began brainstorming early.

I never wrote anything down at this point, although I should have, as that's the best way to brainstorm. I had made my choices in the vote, and was also surprised to see a few familiar options such as Light in the Dark and Floating Islands.

Is it bad to say that I looked at Combine 2 Incompatible Genres, and my first thought was I do not want to do that one?

As I continued to brainstorm though, I managed to think of something that would work for that theme as well as a few of the others, not everything mind you, but enough that I was comfortable.

The Hour of Ludum

When the theme was decided, which was Combine 2 Incompatible Genres, I had already had a basic idea of what I wanted to do, but I continued to brainstorm for about an hour as I went to grab myself Dinner.

Ultimately however, I had decided to go with my idea of an Escape Room + Platformer. This was the Beginnings of the game Escape!

Player_Walk.gif

The first item I developed was the player graphic. I did this because I knew I wanted my character animated, which required a bit more implementation in the player controller design. This is something I usually do when developing my games, as often it affects the level design, and the graphic design of the rest of the game.

After the player controller, I designed a simple room, where the player had to grab a key, and that key opened the first door. There were no complexities, even the key was just a grey key shaped item, with no actual graphic yet.

LudemDareUpdate.png

At this point, both the door and key were implemented, however they were not fully implemented to work, as this was just the beginning of...

The Grind

At this point in the development process, I had been working on the game for a few hours, and this is where the interesting features come in, as well as the buggy problems and issues.

The first step was to design an inventory system, as well as an interface, which would allow the player to pick up the keys, and any other items I implemented in the future to be used in solving the escape room puzzles.

LudumDare_WIP.png

This was the very early stages of the inventory system, and it worked relatively well, except for when I dropped the item, in which the physics of the item would get very wonky. (I had managed to get the feature to work, however it isn't seen at all in the final ludum submission, as there is no way to get a new item and drop the old one while playing the game)

Screenshot-2018-4-21 LudumDare (Construct 2 preview).png

During the development of the interface here, I also developed a working text system, that displayed text on the screen to the player visually, at about 4 frames per second, character by character.

Halfway There

About 7-8 hours straight, no sleep, constant work, sweat, blood and tears, and I was finally at a good halfway-point, or at least a good stopping point, it was around this time that I finally took the time to get some sleep, and be ready for the rest of the game's development!

LudumDare_WIP2.png

The game's features included a working clock that counted down at all times, a working inventory system, keys, and locked door mechanics, and the beginning implementation of the pass-code doors.

The idea of the pass-code doors I felt strongly gave the feeling of an Escape Room, and I was excited at how well everything was going together at this point in time. Not everything in the development process went smoothly however...

The Little Problems

There weren't very many major problems that stalled development of Escape, however little problems, such as graphical errors, and interfaces not functioning properly did occur often enough. My biggest problem occurred when implementing the pass-code doors. The doors had to store all values used, and an entirely separate interface had to be used when using them. Let's just say that implementing menu-controllers isn't my strong suit, as this led to a problem with the sprite font not displaying certain characters, when it should have... Talk about a headache

The Result

After many more hours working on the interfaces, and level design, I finally started working on graphics! The Graphics overall took about the last 2-3 hours in developing Escape. This was my strong-suit, and I saved it for the last thing to do, because I prioritized my gameplay first. While I feel that I could have focused a little bit more in the gameplay, for instance the difficulty spikes are noticeable, I still think that the amount of time I gave myself to work on the graphics, was the perfect amount, and due to needing the extended time, I opted out of the compo, and instead planned on submitting my game as a Jam.

LudumDare_WIP3.png

Anyways, I am very proud of the product I released to you guys here at Ludum 41, and if you are interested in trying the game out for yourself, or haven't tried it yet, you can give it a go HERE!!! The game is web-based, and requires at least a keyboard.

When you are finished playing it there, feel free to give it a rating and review before the end of the Play-Rate Games phase! You can do that HERE!!!

The game is going to get continued support, and I plan on expanding much further on the idea! If you would like continued updates and info on how this continued project is going, definitely give me a follow on twitter HERE!!!

At this point, I would also like to thank everyone for their support on this project! And everyone's support here overall! This is a great community, that I am glad to be a part of!

Last chance!

Well, it's allmost the end of the Ludum Dare 41, and it was supper fun and interesting participing for the first (but not the last) we'll probably make a post-mortem of the poyect in the future as well.

So, one last Advertisment of our game!

Oh no! I missed the play+rate part!

Oh no! Things in life got a bit hectic after last LD for me and I didn't have time to even thing about it until now. And now I realize there is less than a day left to play + rate? 😱

And my game is at risk as well (which I deserve as I couldn't rate others yet). Will try to make up for it and play a few now!

I made a turn-based jump&run, if you're looking for another game to play, feel free to give it a try:

But I have to be honest, I might not be able to play yours back in time before the deadline. But I'll try! 🤞

Oops.. We missed the play+rate part of the competition

Oops. We got a bit busy with schoolwork and had a huge accident. Just logged back in today and realised there is less than 20 hours until the play+rate ends! :(

And as we have not rated anyone else's game, our game is in huge trouble. Will rate a couple of games in the next few hours to make up for it so please check our game out.

I will try to rate back as much as possible

Thank you!! :)

Rate Us

This is our first ever game jam, and thus our first Ludum Dare. We'd love it if you played our game and gave us a rating and a comment as we need some last minute ratings to get a score!!

The idea is a visual novel combined with a tower defense. The choices you make in the dialog changes the stats of the towers. The tower defense is a strategic tower defense where you build the maze for the enemies.

B.E.A.S.T.S. - Post Mortem, Reflections, and Musings

BlogHeader.png

As we are coming up on the last 24 hours of LD41, I thought it'd be a great time to share a post-mortem of B.E.A.S.T.S. (Break Everything And Stack Towering Structures). Though my team Cosmic Adventure Squad has been jamming for the past 10+ years, we rarely write post-mortems. But I think there’s a lot to share and a lot to learn from each jam! So without further ado...

Brainstorming 🌩️

To be honest neither one of us were very excited for the theme when we first heard it, as it just felt too open-ended and prone to blandness. We sat down, sketched some ideas, and eventually had a toss-up between a restaurant sim/pipe-connecting puzzle and a city builder/city rampager. Typically, we would draw out a really rough paper prototype of the gameplay to get a feel for how the game will look and be played. When we found how much fun it was to think of monsters and destruction mechanics, we knew which idea was going to make the cut.

sketchy.jpg Gnocchi giving us a paw in the brainstorm process

RAPID Rapid Prototyping ⏩

Our developer, Strega, quickly built a rough playable prototype in Unity that we sent to our musician, Tenlki, and some friends who were also participating in LD. Together, we playtested and refined the gameplay even before any of the art went in, which was a common technique we’d use in past LDs.

Progress1-SM.gif Basic controls, combat, movement, level generation

Progress3-SM.gif Destruction and first bits of art

Visualizing the Visuals 👀

We decided on using MagicaVoxel for the art assets early on -- I didn’t want to get bogged down with the nuances skinning, rigging, texturing, etc and all the 3D features that I’d commonly find myself losing too many hours in. Since my role also involves UI/UX, technical art, and asset implementation, I needed to make sure there was a balance.

stompin.gif monkeySm.gif

Though I’ve worked with MagicaVoxel in the past, I completely forgot that exported geometry was by no means optimized -- each building part came out to be almost 3000 tris! Optimization is no small feat, especially with procedurally generated levels and a goal to have a WebGL build that can run on most browsers.

maya.png cut down tris by 99% by re-modeling and UV texturing each environment piece

Putting it All Together 🤜🤛

After a decade of jamming together we’ve learned to scope our games really small and make sure a full, submittable gameplay loop comes together as early as possible. That way the rest of the time can be spent polishing the crap outta it, being chill, and having a good time. By Saturday night--music sketch, characters, environment, placeholder UI--basically something we’d be happy with submitting if we ran out of time. We added some fun little details here and there: - Making the score bars represent the characters (fire beam and giant fist). - A control reassignment screen because we couldn’t come to an agreement on how two players would play on a single keyboard - Character portraits, win certificates, and hand-painted title screen for extra oomph - Numbers popping up for feedback, color highlights

UIstuff.png

Looking Forward 🔮

We read every one of your comments and loved the feedback! Some things we’ll add/improve in a future post-jam build: - We definitely need a single player mode! Some ideas include highscore, puzzle-based, or have AI players to compete against. - Although we had a key reassignment screen, this was not immediately discoverable by many players. Maybe a help button in-game or a brief popup at the start of the first round will call attention to it. - Alternatively, let people use controllers! - More playable characters. I had sketched out a mech and a giant wolf character but sadly they didn’t make it in. charactersketches.png

Audio Fixed on Self Golf

Hi all, I realised yesterday that my entry had been hit with Google's dreaded HTML5 audio issue (recent Chrome update has upset a lot of people). Anyway I exported a new version to allow for this, so audio is working now.

I always enjoy writing music for LD, so I'd be a bit sad if anyone played the game without audio. This time I also recorded myself clapping for then end of each hole, so that makes me a sound designer now right?

Anyway if anybody happened to play without music, or just wants to give it a try, you can play/rate here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/self-golf

Do you need 20 ratings in each category to get a score or is it 20 avg. overall?

I thought it was the former, but in my last game I only had 18 ratings in the "Humor" category and still got a score. Kinda worried now, because I don't want to miss out on a score and I still only have 19 ratings in humor this time around...

Edit: To clarify - I meant to ask whether you need 20 ratings to get a score in the corresponding category (i.e. are 19 humor ratings enough if the average is >20?)

Post-mortem and plans for future.

screen1.png I think my game Cursed Princess turned out pretty well, graphics are kind of nice despite how simple they are, I finally got around to using firebase to track stats and such and I'm somewhat proud of how funny the text for some of the recruiting events is but sadly those are the only part where the writing gets sort of interesting rest of it is just telling you the current state of the things in a boring way.

For the post-LD version main thing I'm planning to add is speech bubbles and varying facial expressions for characters so they can comment on stuff without it making the main text overly long and tiring to read. Other than that I'm going to try add some combat that's probably going to be way more complex than it seems, I want it to mainly involve you just cheering your party members on without it bothering you about details the princess wouldn't have real understanding of. I also want to add a bunch more party member options but for them to work nicely I'll probably need to add some ways to kick or refuse party members to keep party size reasonable, though it shouldn't be too direct so something like if you choose not to pick someone for anything too many times while their to be added general mood stat is too low they'll leave. For refusing people I think your party members should vote on if they want the new member and then depending on how you greet the person if he's accepted those that voted against him would like you more or less. Also I want to completely rework the way removing the curse works currently I'm thinking the curse strength should start at 1% and increase somewhat inevitably as you travel with the only way to reduce it being to find special locations that let you do that, that way you can't easily just spend forever doing whatever.

But yeah after thinking about it for a while I decided that I do want to keep developing this quite a bit since I could use it to tie together 2 of my long term projects.

LOVE2D Build Scripting

My game The Royale We probably won't get enough votes to be rated, so rather than trying to drum up ratings I though I'd write a bit about the build script I came up with to help me speed things up during this jam. A big part of the reason why I participated in this jam was to smooth out some of the bumps in the process of coding and releasing a game with LOVE2D, and the build process is one of the more boring and tedious parts.

It's windows command/batch script and I'm quite happy with the results. Hopefully it could be helpful or educational to some people!
