Dungeon Drifter - Bullet Hell Steering RPG

Hey Ho,

Have you guys ever wanted to steer a minecart in a cavern while being bombarded by arrows, magic and bodies? Well then this might be a game for you.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/dungeon-drifter

I made this game during the LD Compo time and would like to share it with all of you! Feedback is highly appreciated. Love you guys and see you again in August!

Let's climb up the "Danger" list!

I had a hard time last week and miss a lot of voting time. ~~I will play and feedback games of at least the first 20 commentators under my game.~~ * Big thank you, ludumers! I got all reviews that I needed. *

If you have a low amount of rates, it will be very usefull because "Smart" sorting is not default now and there is not another stable possibility to get 20 rates in a time.
Let's help each other, guys!

Download Soundtrack from Timelapse

While the play rating goes on (and probably for a considerable time after that) you can download the soundtrack from my timelapse video as MP3 files here: https://goo.gl/qTTtHC (61.7MB - free download)

The music is retro/chip inspired but with a modern vibe. I am greatly influenced by music from the C64, Amiga and Demo Scene eras which is a period I dream back to and probably glorify more than I should :)

The package contains 9 tracks with a total duration of 27 minutes and 31 seconds:

  • Imphenzia - Chip Up.mp3 (3:12 - not yet officially released)
  • Imphenzia - First One.mp3 (3:25)
  • Imphenzia - Golf N Grenades.mp3 (3:36 - featured in my LD41 game, made during the 48h)
  • Imphenzia - Lift Me Up Platformer.mp3 (2:03)
  • Imphenzia - Nostalgia.mp3 (4:29)
  • Imphenzia - Once Upon a Platform.mp3 (2:18)
  • Imphenzia - Past Times.mp3 (1:53)
  • Imphenzia - Pixels.mp3 (4:21 - not yet officially released)
  • Imphenzia - Secret Game 2.mp3 (2:13 - not yet officially released)

If you enjoy the music, I have 10 hours of music available on my web site as well (imphenzia.com)

Here is the timelapse of my LD41 entry which also features the music: https://youtu.be/zOSlkF98v8I

Danger

After rating a few games right after the event ended, I only got time to rate again today. All seemed well as I slowly climbed up the board until the default sorting switched to DANGER and basically kicked me off.

Check your audio in HTML5 games

Hey, if you have published an HTML5 version of your game it might be worth checking to make sure the audio still plays. Google released a new version of Chrome yesterday that has broken any game that launches when it loads (including mine, we're still fixing it.)

According to this article, it seems that if you include a button on the page that launches your game, rather than it playing automatically, it should work fine.

Fave Games of Ludum Dare 41: Part 8 of ???

OJbtIw.jpg

So if you've been following my reviews you might have picked up on the fact that I have a very special place in my heart of hearts for chill as hell gaming experiences. Bloom is one of those games. Its a hybrid game mixing elements from Civilization, a platonic dating sim, with a kind of inherited-trait twist and a certain Catan-esque look. I love it. You lead your tribe in forging friendships and alliances with the other tribes, sharing resources and breeding settlers to have physical features that appeal to as many of the other tribes as possible. And you just... get along. This game was calm and engaging and I'm always after relaxing experiences like it! Funny story: when I was a wee kid my Dad used to play Civilization 3 and go absolutely ballistic when the game didn't go as expected (my old man is so bad at all games its so sad) and it sort of ingrained an instinctive, immediate dislike of any game even remotely resembling it. For Bloom's ability to placate years of childhood trauma and deliver a great experience, it gets a big, therapist-approved A+.

Ludum Dare 41 games made here at Tech Valley Game Space

Hello, jammers! As many of you already know, we had a real-world meeting here at Tech Valley Game Space in Troy, NY, USA, and we wanted to share what was created in the area. We're a bit late on listing these games out, but if you happen to have the time, feel free to browse through them and let the respective creators know what you think!

On a side-note, I personally will getting serious on rating games tomorrow. If you have any suggestions, please let me know! I'll prioritize on those who commented and rated my game first.

What do get when you blend obstacle-avoiding action with text-based dating?

The answer is Undertale. This game is completely different.

SmackTalk! Live Teaches Typing!

smackTalkLive.png

Type the text shown for each part of the promo. Take as much time as you need and then press the “Talk Smack!” button. For each segment of the promo, half-credit is given for capitalization mistakes, and no credit is given if there are any other mistakes. If you get enough credit, more than half of the credits possible, after finishing the promo, you will get a good ending for the promo, and otherwise you will get worse endings. Finish all 4 promos to go to the credits and complete the game!

SmackPaint! Combat Painting with Ross Bob

Paintsmack! Combat painting with Ross Bob. NOW WITH CREATIVE MODE!

Grab your paint and tap “A” to do happy little brushes against the canvas. Do your best to finish the painting before all the happy little critters steal away with your paint or the time runs out. Take a picture of your masterpiece afterwards and share it with the world!

Fantasy Fighter

This game is a top-down, turn-based, fighter. The game as an experiment and opportunity to learn C++ and the SFML library. Unfortunately, the best fighter elements weren’t added, but the mechanics are written down in the README.md.

Salty Scuttle

saltyScuttle.gif

Being the Ludum Dare after Valentine’s Day, it seemed like the perfect time to work on a 2 player cooperative game for gamers to enjoy with their significant others. But, given the theme, what genre could we combine with cooperative play to make a truly romantic experience that would bring couples together the world over? The answer was clear: QWOP. In Salty Scuttle, each player controls one leg of a crab who is trying to migrate to their new home for the new season. Try to help them go as far as possible without flipping them over onto their back!

Frogs vs. Cats: Post-Compo update, plus my favorite other text-adventure mashups

Hey all! Yet another post-compo update post. I started the compo about 16 hours late, so there were a lot of gaps, in the compo game, but I got far enough (and had enough fun!) that I wanted to keep improving. If you haven't tried the compo version and want to rate it, make sure to check out and rate the original version first. Frogs vs. Cats is a text-adventure platformer that is backwards from many of the other delightful text-adventure mashups I've seen (see below for more on that!), in that you control the frog around the platform in order to drive the text-adventure, which is spelled out in the sky above you, rather than controlling the game via text. Here's a little preview - the hopping gives it a bit of an original Prince of Persia feel, I think:

frogsvscats_35.gif

Once you've rated the compo version (or decided not to rate it!), if you want to play something at least a little more polished, I've piled up enough little improvements (54 commits worth!) to post an update, I think. I've actually locked the doors, refined the controls, added a title screen with directions, fleshed out the levels, added more sounds, refined the text dialog and interactions, and of course squashed a few bugs. Check it out over on the PICO-8 BBS.

Many thanks to the commenters who have left much helpful feedback in the comments so far, especially @antti-haavikko for the detailed run-down that led directly to several of the improvements! Sidenote, I highly recommend their game Binary Blocks, it's incredibly polished and a lot of fun.

And on that note, a shout-out to a couple other text-adventure based games I've seen and loved: Birdy is a delightful little puzzle-platformer with the text elements well-integrated into the game: the more advanced moves are longer and harder to type, and a key element of the challenge is typing them out in time - it's challenging, adorable, and a lot of fun.

AeroWrit is a very different take - a text-adventure flight simulator! It's very well done, the tutorial is top-notch and guides you through the commands very well, and the game itself is a fun little find-the-rings game, that makes very good use of the text-adventure component in a way that works really well and makes it a lot of fun.

If you have other text-adventure mashups, post them below - I'd love to try them out! And keep an eye out for a future post, I'm gonna get back to my game and actually make the "vs" in the title mean something

I know that i'm too late but... WEB VERSION IS HERE

The file size of my game is 100 mb, so finally having a web version means more people can play my game.

Also I just created an itch.io because web versions in gamejolt is not that good.

My thoughts on the grade filter of the game section

I know that this topic might have been discussed in the past but..

In my opinion, the grade filter shouldn't exist. It just allow the games with a lot of ratings get more.

To be honest, when I first joined Ludum Dare last year, most of the games I rated was the games I found interesting by using the grade filter. Right now I still sometimes use that filter to find some interesting games but I still kind of worry that they deprive the attention of other possibly more deserving games with less ratings, especially with newcomers.

But that is just my opinion, I still think that the existence of that filter have a good purpose.

And also I noticed that there's no dedicated section to the games who like entered the top 10 ranking in each category. Last time I saw something like that was in LD 39 and its just like in a notepad something. They obviously deserve better

Help, already on danger filter?

Our game has received 16 ratings, but to our dismay the system has already switched to the Danger filter. We planned to do the ratings in the 2nd and 3rd week, but that plan is now ruined. Generally, if we understand correctly, raters no longer have an incentive to rate, because it will not increase their game's rank. We knew the same thing happened during LD40, but it was only in the last 2-3 days, not the whole week! It's possible to switch the game sorting manually, but if LD40 is any indication, raters do not seem to do this very often. There must be a lot of people with this problem! We are unhappy that this happened without a proper announcement, so there was no way to plan for this.

Our game is "Frogger: the Jigsaw"

Announcement: "Honest Dan's LD41 Finale" Stream

I'm a regular game dev streamer on Twitch, and will be running one final stream playing and rating LD41 games! The stream will take place during the 4 hours leading up to the rating deadline (21:00GMT / 16:00 EST). The stream will start approximately 17:00 GMTST (12:00 EST) on Tuesday 15th , if you want a notification when I go live feel free to follow me on Twitch.

gamejolt-banner.png

How it works

Please read the rules at the top of the submission spreadsheet. One of the most important rules is: If you are not in chat when I try to play your game, you will be removed from the list and need to resubmit. This may seem a harsh rule, but I stand by it - no exceptions sorry. I want to give feedback to those who are viewing the stream, and I want those waiting in line to be able to predict roughly when their game will be played - without those who missed their turn cutting back into the queue repeatedly.

DO NOT SUBMIT YOUR GAME VIA COMMENTS IN THIS THREAD - USE THE LINKS BELOW TO THE SIGN UP FORM.

I will play the game and write feedback on stream, but I do my star ratings off screen as I don't want to influence anyone else's decisions on a game.

Interested?

WRECKLESS RALLY Art Process | Part 5: At Last, Some Animation

  graphemtitle/em5.png

Previously: Part 4: Staying Sane During A Jam

Art Process Part 5: At Last, Some Animation

Vroom Vroom

Some of our titles, such as Artax for Ludum Dare 39, have a lot of animation work. Some have less. As it turns out, Wreckless Rally is one of the latter. The car sprites are rotated by means of @daanvanyperen's mystical programming magic, and exist of just two frames where there's a very bare-bones lighting shift on the tires. The advantage is that this gives me a lot of time for environment sprites, but I do want to keep up my animation practice this jam.

Untitled-5.gif

Combo, dingdingding!

Ah, great! Here's a good opportunity to animate, albeit a short one. What will add some game juice is a sexy effect to make successful combos pop. I have a look at a Bejeweled video on YouTube at 25% playback speed, and see that they briefly enlarge the sprites before shrinking them down. I decide to add an additional flash effect, and we have a nice dynamic scoring effect.

graphics-post_caranim2.gif

Caution, Slippery

The oil slick sprite I made doesn't really pop off the screen enough. We do want the plays to notice them, so I set out to make them more noticeable. I start with my original unmoving sprite, which is a simple dark grey with a subtle colourful oily outline and ripple shapes.

graphics-post_oilslick1.png

A simple shine animation, where a bright line passes across the sprite, should do the trick. There are various ways to execute this - you can add a secondary glimmer shooting across after the main glimmer, or have the glimmer shoot back across the oil slick, for instance. I decide to keep it simple, as we are on day 3 of the jam already, and there's more polishing to be done.

graphics-post_oilslick2.gif

Now to add some oily colours to it. I choose green, blue and purple - like the outline I had put on the sprite originally, but much lighter. You can add yellows and reds to oil as well (anything goes, really), but I do not want to overdo it.

graphics-post_oilslick3.gif

Hmm, it still just looks like a plain line moving across the sprite. So I have the effect spread out across the outline a little, and also hit the little drops that splattered outside of the main slick.

graphics-post_oilslick4.gif

Much better, it adds a lot more life to a simple dark stain on the tarmac already.

Ready, Set, Go!

And finally, the last thing we need is some starting lights, to get things going. I start with a giant 16-light setup like in Formula 1 at first, but then simplify this down to a basic four light red-to-green count. The big setup is probably not clear enough to players unfamiliar with Formula 1, after all.

lights.gif

The Finish Flag

That about concludes my art process postmortem blog posts. As I said at the start, the animations this jam are few and simple, but I am glad there was something to animate - gotta keep practicing! Looking back now, I don't have too many regrets regarding the graphics. I kind of messed up on the dirt tiles a little, deciding to start with only a vertical border between it and the tarmac, and then awkwardly adding diagonal borders separately from vertical borders which don't line up that well. But it's subtle and I felt I could get away with it.

graphics-hackjob.png

And with that we reach the end. I hope you've enjoyed these blog posts, and that they might help you in your own process in the future. Thanks for reading!

The not-so Correct Platformer - Winds of Change and PixDoom!

Hello fellow jammers! We all hope you had a great time working on a game for Ludum Dare 41. Our jam game this year was titled "The not-so Correct Platformer." It was a blast creating it! We were super excited once we finished, and we are even more excited to announce that we are taking this project forwards officially under a new name: PixDoom. We're adding new bosses, re-making old ones, improving the platforming, and generally pouring much more polish into it. It will be a new experience for us as we have never released a full game before, but that's part of the fun of it!

Unfortunately, this means that we will no longer be developing post jam versions. We will release our final post jam version on the 31st, and then we will be moving on to the fulltime development of PixDoom as a paid release. We're going to be releasing under our brand new publisher name: Koala Squad! If you want to follow us and our development on PixDoom and our other games, check us out at koalasquad.wordpress.com. Cheers!

ioQIyA.png

I can't praise this game highly enough. I'm a huge sucker for a well-executed creep factor and Woodsy just does a great job with very difficult art driven elements- like mood and humor and ambiance and tension... I could go on. The pixel art is stylish and unique looking and the monsters are certainly creepy and scary but also very well designed and individualized. The writing in this is fresh and a little sardonic but natural feeling and that really lends itself to the overall tone of the game and the implementation of this jam's theme. This game also describes my idea neighborhood. I give this game 5 friendly cryptids out of 5.

Rhythm + horror genres!!!

fear of silence.png In our game - Fear of Silence, we want to mix horror and rhythm games! We thought that this would be an interesting mix of genres, because it's quite absurd!! And we decided to make a cool atmosphere by choosing the theme of the level of the entrance of the house from the post-Soviet space! 13e63.png As we think the atmosphere at us turned out, but in two days we did not manage to realize much that wanted! These are some elements of the horror, like screamers, monsters, etc. Снимок экрана 2018-04-22 в 20.59.26.png The rhythm elements of the game we sketched pretty fast, it turned out to be acceptable, but we would not have had time to do something more cool, since we did not have experience in such types of games unfortunately! Rhythm set is very complex, so it is difficult to move, but we've added the ability to disable the rhythm of the game, so that players can simply evaluate the level of the atmosphere! Снимок экрана 2018-04-22 в 20.54.01.png We hope you will appreciate our game on advantage!

StarPath - Post Jam Ish

I've been hugely involved in working on StarPath this time around; I loved the idea of it, but I had a hell of a time with the contest because of Big Issues With Work that started even before Ludum Dare began. Plus my old collision and geometry code didn't prove... quite up to task.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/space-telepath-war

I've put a "Post Ish Jam" Version here that's resembling more of what I wanted. SPACE, SHIFT, and WASD/arrows: http://gwbloom.com/dev/games/ludum/ludum41.1/

I'm still updating it, mostly been bugfixing and trying to wrangle the mechanics to give better content... as mentioned below.

Losing half the Ludum Dare weekend kind of killed my chances, unfortunately. But additionally I've had to do (and redo) the geometry code for this... a lot. To give you an idea, I have only added the Checkpoints, the tutorial "Jumping" character, and a better level "deployment" system. Everything else has been debugging. Almost all of it involving a whole new collision type I've never dealt with before, "Rays". I thought I had code to handle this... boy was I wrong.

Don't bother about voting. I'm mostly interested in comments anyway! :) I'm not completely happy with the mechanics; if you have the same color as a laser, why push the box? Why interact when you can build, or teleport? This has been my other challenge here (beyond geometry code). There's fun potential here, but I have to think mechanics more.

And fix the bloody ray/path collisions. Gr...

Really!

Oh come on! why!.png

Text-Gen Platformer -- Post-Mortem

tgpemss/em03.png

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/text-gen-platformer

The Good

  • My first time writing a text parser. It's not very complex, but it works, and I was happy with that.
  • I got platforming to work, and rather quickly as well. It was a struggle the first time I did it in LD, but it turned out to be the easy part this time.
  • Music, as always.
  • Recorded and edited the sound effects, I'm getting better at that. I'm glad I took the time to add in all the typing sound effects, it feels like it adds a lot.
  • Parallax background, not difficult but I'm still happy when I manage to pull it off.

The Bad

  • Some of the commands were not very intuitive. The fact that you always have to type LEFT or RIGHT after a command like WALK threw some people, and the more I think about it, the more I realize I should probably have simplified it, or at least allowed people to follow the WALK and RUN commands with LEFT or RIGHT by itself. I also could have included FORWARD. Most of this was oversight, but even if I had realized it, I might not have had time to fix it before the deadline.
  • I still have no idea what causes the player to fall through platforms sometimes. It's completely random, and the same platforms work normally when the level is reloaded. It makes no sense, so I'm just chalking it up to a Unity physics bug.
  • I should have been more forgiving with some of the jumps in the game. The first big jump needed a platform underneath to catch you if you messed it up, so that you could try again easily. The double jump at the end of level 2 belonged more at the end of level 3 instead, and should have had a longer lead up to it for more running time.
  • The graphics, while they do their part, could always use improvement. It's still my weakest area.

Improvements

  • The above-mentioned improvements to the text parser would help out a lot. In addition, a lot of feedback I got said that it would have been nice to press the up arrow to re-enter previous commands, and I agree with that.
  • I really wanted the music to be dynamic, changing depending on what the player was doing at the time, but I just didn't have the time to do it.
  • More levels would have been nice, but again, time limit. I also really wanted there to be a boss fight.

Thanks for your feedback! Taking it to the next level...

LD41 PostMortem - Community, Passion and a Terrible Game

LD41 brought with it a very strange theme; and with it, some very strange games.

My game is one of those games.

I give you...

IB-LD41-sm.gif

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/interdenominational-brows

I was inspired from the keynote by @philstrahl to really Push myself this Ludum Dare!

After I heard what the theme was, I sat with my teammate @thunderawesome on Google Hangouts more perplexed than ever. It took us nearly 2 hours to wrap our heads around this idea. After joking and sharing buckets of terrible (and equally awesome) ideas, we decided to get prototyping.

This game was so many things before it became what it did and by the end I was more happy it was playable than anything.

After submitting, I wasn't really expecting anything. Maybe someone would get lost along the way to a game they had meant to play and accidentally played mine? (My expectation were very low)

I was surprised when I found the very opposite! In fact, quite a few people had tried it and had some really nice things to say, along with some extremely valid feedback! I felt like, they didn't see the game for what it was as much as they saw the game how I saw it: what it could be!

Seriously, I had NO IDEA how amazing and supportive this community was. From the bottom of my strange, discolored and smelly mess of a heart..

Thank you :]

Post-Mortem: The Fishing

logo.png

Hello everyone !

We were very happy to participate for this Ludum Dare where the theme was very interesting. We were a bit sceptical at the beginning when the theme was announced because of the many possibilities we could find combining two genre. We had so many ideas and proceeded by elimination to find something that would be cool to make and to play. That's how The Fishing was born (thank you The Shining).

The idea

For that game we wanted to play the little worm that the fisherman throws to catch some fishes. So once he throw the worm, you take control of him and explore the depth of this...lake...sea...whatever, lets call it "the shining water" and well, you want to break free. So all along the adventure, your quest is to get rid of that rod (and optionally gather all gems for fun only).

The level

theFishingLayout.png

When creating the level, we wanted at first to make a "level 1 - level 2 etc..." but interestingly, the tool we used to create them was too slow and tedious to handle (each tile corner needed to be placed by hand, sides too etc.) So we decided to make one and only level where you just go deeper and deeper. And that turned exceptionally well ! I mean we were happy with it :) Unfortunately, we didn't acknowledge that there was a built-in tilemap tool in unity. And therefore it would have saved us so much time if we did know that. The free asset was perfect and handy, but placing them each one of them manually took a long time to do. And the more we put blocks, the more my pc started to melt, you get the picture.

So you have a safe zone at the top of the level, and more you go deeper, more it becoms darker and more tense. That is how we wanted this to happen, and we were happy of the result.

The sprites

spritesempost/emmortem.png

I did 6 different fishes in pixel art, each of them have a swimming animation and a frame where they have the mouth open. We wanted to give each fish a different behavior to surprise you during the game, only the shark and the purple fish have the same behaviour. - the purple fish: When you enter his vinicity he pauses, open his mouth and start to follow you until he reaches you - the Shark: Same behavior as the purple fish - the nose fish: This fish stops, open his mouth and speed to the last position you were - Baloon fish: This fish is the least scarier and he just "puffs" when you get too close to him - Skull fish: This one doesn't pause, he goes in a limited straight line very fast. If you are too close you are good to start again - Lantern fish: It actually open his mouth but doesn't mouth, he waits until you pass above him... and strike like a thunder ! (We are very proud of this one)

Things that didn't get in the game on time

  • Well, we wanted to make a fishing game / adventure game. And when you get caught by a fish, we wanted to focus the camera on top of the fisherman and activate a playable fishing game where you battle against the fish. If you succeed at catching the fish, the fisherman wins and he throws back a new worw (the fish doesn't exists anymore during the game)
  • We also wanted to make it easier for the player to not start all over again when you get caught because it is at the moment really punishing you
  • Sprites were inconsistent and I need to work on pixel art more to make them more appealing and consistent. You can see the fisherman, trees, plants, fishes don't have the same resolution and is not very pretty to see. This is something we should definitely work on.
  • Different endings, when you gather all gems, when you capture all fishes and when you reach the anchor (but this one is implemented already)
  • Make it more scary !!!!!!! (of course)

Conclusion

It was a great weekend and we are very happy to have participated. In its current state, our game is the original gam jam version. We didn't do a post-jam one because we try as much as we can to make it bug-free and we are very satisfied with what we came up. We had a lot of fun making it, we had a lot of fun playing your games too. This is our first ludum dare (we are 2) and we would be very pleased to participate as much as we can :) And hopefully see you all around too (with newcomers!)

Thank you for this wonderful Jam.

Have a nice day !

Have you ever wondered how your (love) life would have played out had you been born a manticore? Did you always want to have a harem full of cute and terrifying monsters? Us too! And now finally the answer to all these questions is here.

1525945915em1151/em10.05.2018_1920x1080.png

"Rose-Coloured Dungeon Life", a game that has you romancing monsters instead of killing them. (We mean that. No killing monsters neccessary.) Instead you slaughter humans (they deserve it), get to know up to four unique partners (could it be there is a secret fifth one? naaaah.) and save the dungeon. We know you love to be the knight in shining armor. (Though you may die some times. Use WaifuMode for more waifu and less shining.)

1525945597em1146/em10.05.2018_1920x1080.png

Remote Bot post-mortem

Ludum Dare 41 have almost passed, I think now is the perfect time for a post-mortem.

Postmortem Time!

Prologue

To the last minute (and even 4 hours after) my participation wasn't certain because there was an exam to pass that started a half an hour after the theme was announced. Nonetheless, I was too excited about the upcoming LD and couldn't resist picking the theme before going to the university. The theme was completely unexpected (the first thought was like "Really, Ludum Dare, REALLY???"). Then I came to the university and discussed the theme with my groupmates who came up with a handful of ideas, from completely stupid or impossible to complete in 72 hours to pretty acceptable ones. As I passed the exam, I took @komnotmr and after a lazy brainstorm session, we finally came up with an idea for the game: a platformer, controlled from a command line. It was a somewhat difficult choice because there are not many people who find typing-based games fun and I had no idea if such a combination will be playable. But I decided to take the risk and began coding (unfortunately, @komnotmr couldn't join me this time).

What went right

  • Graphics. ASCII art is quite a shortcut, but it can help you make the right mood. I've seen this in action in @bwalter's first day's posts and fell in love with this aesthetic. I instantly generated an idea of a robot controlled via command line and from that point giving up was no longer an option.
  • Polish. One of the personal goals I wanted to reach this time was making a finished game with an intro, a tutorial (or self-explaining UI), win condition and some other stuff. And thanks to graphics' simplicity, I think I got it fully covered.
  • Level design. That's where the things got really interesting. It was the first time I was doing level design for a game, but, surprisingly, I didn't feel unconfident and somehow I managed to do it quite well.

What went wrong

  • Tools. Yes, Phaser, I'm looking at you. I wasted several hours trying to figure out why the officially supported physics engine doesn't work with tilemaps. The solution was... it wasn't! I was forced to change the physics engine. And it's not the first time Phaser behaves unpredictable, in fact I have already encountered strange thing like this working on Snaketris' gamepad support.
  • Collisions. Now I know why they say that platformers are not that easy to create. Almost every collision-related decision I made was a workaround, not the real solution. I don't think it's such a bad thing, especially for a jam game, but deep inside me a perfectionist programmer cries.
  • Timing. Sometimes life decides to split an event into two parts and seizes the day in the middle of it. That is my case.

You should always learn, young padawan

...and Ludum Dare is a great opportunity to do it! This is what I got from the LD41:

  • First of all, the theme doesn't really suck. Even the worst one can be transformed to an exciting game, you just need to dig it deep enough to find the actual gem of an idea.
  • If you want to do something, do it yourself. Sadly, this time my enthusiasm wasn't as contagious as is was during the previous Ludum Dare, so I couldn't team up with my friends. Lonely ride is a completely different experience with its pleasant aspects (no useless arguments, no bloody merges in the git) and the unpleasant ones (sometimes you are wrong and you realize it when it's too late).
  • Be ready to cut the most of your game's content. Can't say I didn't know it before the current jam, but want to point it one more time. The first concept for Remote Bot contained a lot of animated (!) sprites I made for the objects I didn't have time to implement (e.g. a spring from the image below). Maybe if I didn't spend my time on that useless animations, I would sleep better (haha).

spring Boink!

It's all about journey, not the destination

For me Ludum Dare is a full spectre of emotions, from despair ("No way I can do it in the time this short.") to overwhelming excitement ("Holy crap, I did it!"). And the pleasant bonus in the end of it are a game to be proud of and a pile of awesome games to play and rate.

The next time I want to take part in the compo and use something different to Phaser, more low-level stuff like PIXI with Matter or even some sort of C. For now, I just want to relax and play some more games. =)

Thanks for reaching this line!

P.S.: for everyone who left their feedback for my game: thank you very much, guys and gals! You are the greatest power of Ludum Dare! And special thanks to @jupiter-hadley and @philstrahl: watching someone playing my game is not only a pleasure, but a rare kind of feedback, the most valuable one, I guess.

Let me put the logo here.

Post Jam Version

We released a post jam version of our game Super Soup Slicer. It now more resembles the idea we initially thought of, but couldn't fully implement because of the little time (surprise, surprise). The most important improvements are:

  • More sounds
  • More levels, better level progression
  • Added hints for each level- Fixed vegetable spawn rates
  • Added troll
  • Minified js

Fave Games of Ludum Dare 41: Part 10 of Probably 10!

109a8.jpg

I played this game early on and the only reason I hesitated on a 'review' was because I wasn't entirely sure how to word my reaction. Whether the developer intended it or not, there's a stark poignancy going on here that elicited a real reaction from me and I was very excited to think about its potential. Inherently neutral game mechanic or possible vehicle for a much deeper meaning aside, the game quickly established an insidious tone right out of the gate that could easily couple with any number of wider reaching motifs. Again, I think the potential to link this to overarching themes of injustice could make this a super powerful game serving up capital A art. But all that aside, what IS here is a great mechanic that can swing into dark humor or harsh metaphor (or both?) and I'm impressed with the mood and versatility that's come out of a Jam game- scratch that- a COMPO game. For delivering a solid mechanic that really plays off two themes with a lovely bit of sardonic crunch, this game gets 5 concealed assailants culling the weak from the herd out of 5.

The big list of multiplayer games, now with danger!

I've posted this list before, but it's been a few days and we're getting closer to the end of the rating period.

This is the list of all the multiplayer games I've found, but this time ::dramatic hand gesture:: I'm highlighting ones that aren't currently at 20 votes yet. The games in the 20-25 range are possibly also not at 20 in specific categories, so I've separated them out too. (If your game is >25 but you need some category love, let me know and I'll move you to that list.)

Also, if you want me add any games I missed or make any corrections to the list, let me know in the comments.

Oh, and they are all local games unless otherwise specified.

Not at 20 yet

In the 20-25 range

More than 25

Just need 1 more rating!

Screenshot5.png

I like comparing my ratings over time, and I just need 1 more in the "Humor" category to get to 20! Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks to everyone who played my game

Now that the LD41 play+rate is almost over, I want to thank to all of you who play and rate my game, all the feedback have been wonderful, I got a lot of notes of things to improve. Thanks!

Ludum41-p1.PNG

I'll toss this up one last time. I did a fair shake at trying to work with something, but I never got the whole game together in time! Long story. But Jeremy Ouillette did a short but good music clip!

So now I’ve put a “Post Ish Jam” Version here that’s resembling more of what I wanted. You hold SPACE or SHIFT, and WASD/arrows, to move: http://gwbloom.com/dev/games/ludum/ludum41.1/

I’m still updating it, mostly been bugfixing, adding sequences, and trying to wrangle the mechanics...

I’m not completely happy with how I'm playing with the mechanics; if you have the same color as a laser, why push the box? Why interact when you can build, or teleport? This has been my other challenge here (beyond geometry code). There’s fun potential here, but I have to think mechanics more.

What do people think? How would you combine these mechanics? - teleportation, wall building? color immunity and pushing blocks?

Working on a post jam version of Super Dashball

Shield! shield1_384.gif

When push comes to shove bump2_384.gif

So far I've * tweaked the dash controls * added a shield required on dash that destroy a bunch of projectiles when it's used up * the players get shoved away when dashed into (as opposed to just pushed) * nicer death/rally end animation * more stuff

If you haven't played the original, play it here.

* I welcome any suggestions.*

Reminder: LD41 Finale Stream on Twitch next Tuesday

Short on votes? Want some feedback? Want to someone experiences your game live on stream?

gamejolt-banner.png

I'm a regular game dev streamer on Twitch, and will be running one final stream playing and rating LD41 games! The stream will take place during the 4 hours leading up to the rating deadline (21:00GMT / 16:00 EST). The stream will start approximately 17:00 GMTST (12:00 EST) on Tuesday 15th , if you want a notification when I go live feel free to follow me on Twitch.

My Personal Record

This is my highest score so far (on easy mode) :). I would be really curious about yours. I know the weapons and signatures seem unnecessary in the beginning. But if you don't use them to actively hunt down asteroids, but as life savers when you can't dodge anymore, they get pretty useful in the later game.

Another tip: Don't use every space station on the way. This costs a lot of scrap.

Soccer Fight gameplay is on Youtube!! Give a look!

I uploaded a simple gameplay to show the mechanics.. if you think it's too chaotic, it's supposed to be!! Have you ever heard of a stadium where everybody stays in silence?? :)
