Day 1 Update

LD39 Prototype 1.png

What the heck is this? Killer Tic-Tacs?

Nope, it's my end of day 1 prototype. I think I have the basic physics and movement working at this point. Next up (tomorrow) will be collisions, more game play, and improved models. I decided to use 3D objects instead of 2D images, even though the game is basically front view... I hope this does not turn out to be a mistake later on.

Joining

Hello everybody

just got my morning coffee which means i'm ready to jam

i'm joining the combo and i will be using these

Engine: Unity Art: Inkscape Sound: bfxr.net

Good luck jamming and remember to get some sleep

After finally waking up, I'm in!

Being from England-land I have only just woken up, fresh and early for a day of Daring! This will be my 7th dare, so I'm looking forward to it!

Tools: 《 Engine: 》Unity3D 2017.1 《 Art: 》Blender, Photoshop 《 Music: 》Milkytracker with my keyboard (if I get round to it!) 《 Soundeffects: 》Sfxr, Audacity

"Running out of Power" isn't a theme I'd brainstormed, but luckily I was able to narrow it down to two choices:

• you're a solar sailor, and are chasing the sun to keep going along the surface of the planet - hyper fast 3D racer • you're an electrical engineer on a ship, but your damn bosses refuse to pay for enough cables to connect everything to the power! So you must spend your day making sure the core systems are all up and running, by constantly re-cabling between them.

I like the first idea more, but the second is probably easier to implement. I'll be going with the first unless anything changes though!

Happy Dareing!

Day One:

I had a very productive first day. I've decided to follow the theme in a very unique direction, and create a game about the situation in which I feel most powerless: When a dog wants me to pet it, but I don't really want to, but the dog is extremely desperate. Get ready to feel like you've lost all power in:

I have a very unfortunate schedule for the jam weekend, littered with awkward 4am shifts. Luckily work is very slow and I will still be able to work on my game there. Sleep is my only worry. I'm going to try not to let the jam affect my sleep, but it is always a struggle to get enough when I work this early. Wish me luck!

Starting Prototype!

The concept is hopefully simple, although far from unique. Get to the bottom of the level, avoid the obstacles, and collect the gem. Planning on having a few levels and maybe a backstory that fits with the theme.

So far I have the player character that can move back and forth, stationary obstacles, moving obstacles, walls that merely block your movement, and a gem to collect.

Next up is a simple level select screen I think, and maybe starting on some simple art.

Just woke up

Just got out of bed and the theme looks interesting, I'm in!

Little over 5 hours in, got an idea

So, no text based adventure this time. Maybe next LD

I don't really want to give anything out (and my idea is still quite VIP), but my game will definitely have some gains. :muscle: :triumph:

Multiplayer chat running

Jumping in :)

Just completed setup of a basic multiplayer server and client for my game jam game.

This one is a Mac only game.

Work in progress beta: http://jasonmerchant.com/macapps/MeditativeChatDemo.zip

Jason

Better late than never.

Yeah I'm in. 17th time, 16th in a row. Using Unity, photoshop, bfxr and autotracker.

I got my idea and I've prototyped it already. Need to add some extra spice to it and of course better graphics but I think its coming along just fine.

I'm in !

8 am in France, time to get started !

Unity, Audacity, Paint.NET and whatever I find for music.

If we're running out of power, I guess someone gonna have to run things manually…

Good Luck everyone !

Making good progress

Feel like I am making decent progress so far for my first ludum dare, working on getting some art assets done before I get some sleep

Screenshot_157.png Here's a GIF I made showing all of the functions (not the "random" one though since I made this video three hours ago!) Test Implemented.gif This is what I like to call: "Lots of work, that no one will ever see!"

We are in!

My wife and me are in again. It is our 2nd LD. Just woke up, ideas got to be flowing in the next hours :)

Good luck and have fun everyone!

I have no idea how to put up a gif directly, so you'll have to click on the link.

Also yes, it will be physics based.

Space Fairing

Design is a little curvy to go with the eyeball aliens and I've probably spent to long drawing it, so its going to have to do

39E1: At last I can start. First task plan the time line.

The LD game jam start nicely at 9am in my time zone. However I have some personal stuff to attend and wasted 5 hours. Have to recover the time and try not to waste more.

Ok. Let's start. I will now try to use the blog post as a documentation of my progress and my work process. This is my first game jam so I will try to prioritize completing the game first and show my progress second. I was thinking of making video of my progress but let see how things goes. I will at least record my progress in the blog post and see how it work out.

First. Planning the timeline (Ideal case. Subject to changes.):

Day 1: Time:
24hr - 5hr(wasted) - 8hr(sleep) = 11hrs

Day 1: Tasks: 1. Plan 2. Interpret the theme 3. Brain storm.

4. Prototype.

Day 2: Time: 24hr - 8hr(sleep) = 16hr.

Day 2: Tasks: 1. Gather all references to make asset 2. Size up the final product. Basically decide how big the game will be. 3. List down all require asset. Or make quick placeholder then count them.

4. Start Production if possible.

Day 3: Time: 24hr - ?hr(sleep) = ?.

Day 3: Tasks: 1. Production Time! Crunch Time! Hope not to fall alseep Time.

Working Title - Last Days

The premise I'll be toying with is effectively the last defense of a once prosperous nation. In the bunker with only a radio, the player will be stepping into the shoes of the leader and commands the defending army to survive and weaken the enemy squads as they push their way in. Theme factors in with the player starting with a fairly well sized army, but loses squads and units as the game goes on. Surviving as long as possible in this decline is the player's main goal.

Due to limited time and skills, I'll probably be running it as a turn based-ish system where you issue commands to your groups and each turn time-skips 4 hours in world to show the results, as the player can't see the field, only a paper map and tokens. This is mostly to work around limitations of art assets and implementation in the weekend time limit.

That's mostly a high view concept of the idea. Tonight I've roughly planned out the potential core of the game and will probably begin rapid prototyping tomorrow morning. The scope isn't very large, so it should be just enough to cry in the fetal position and still get something functional. Tools are Unity3D for engine, Krita+GIMP for art, and realistically, probably not much in the audio department.

Did I mention everyone is magical critters? That may factor in how I handle some stuff.
