Derpiness slider

So I finally decided to do an addition to my generic face animation script that I use on every single game jam game. I've had this addition in mind for quite some while now but never really sacrificed the time to do it during an actual jam.

The addition is what I call derpiness variable for blinking and it adds a slight randomized delay to each eye blink timing.

A Fruit, A Microphone, and a Dream

Did you know?

In Knit Worth, when you poke at Granny's synapses inside her head, they make a small squish! sound.

That sound was created by squirting mashed banana out of a small hole in a plastic bag!

Postmortem and playthrough of our game "Lousy Life Lessons - [LLL]"

Since this time we focused more on story than usual, we made a playthrough video for the folks who aren't that much into 2D Platformers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wesBcsyUas

Postmortem: It was the first time we made a platformer in Unity and because of weird physics behaviour, we decided to code the movement and collision of the platformer with a simple raycast system. This turned out to be a little bit more complicated than we thought and a few bugs crept into the game.

Sadly the animations are are bit buggy sometimes and the backgrounds for 2 levels are missing but apart from that, we managed it to finish the game in time.

We decided to make a postjam version of the game, with all bugs fixed and all assets placed. We will upload it as soon as it's ready.

If you are interested, you can play and rate our game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/lousy-life-lessons

Rate my game and I'll rate yours!

If you're one of next five people who rate my game, I'll make sure to check yours!

Quick patch made on Heartaker

I hope you are all doing great!

I have pretty exciting news; but first of all, let me thanks every single one who gave me feedback about the game!

I received a lot of critics on dialogue speed, not being able to restart the game and resurrection price in the game. Lucky, every single change is this patch is basically a few digits changed in values of the game, like speed and price.

FINALGIF.gif

Either way, here's the quick patch note:

  • Gameover screen is faster.
  • Upgrades are cheaper.
  • Shopkeeper's dialogue is faster.
  • Spawn time is faster.
  • You can restart the game.
  • Enemies reset attack timer after dash encounter.
  • Camera correctly looks at the player if he falls from the map.
  • Game starts in fullscreen.
  • Samurai's icon should look sharper.

You can play Heartaker and give me more suggestions right here!~

Thank ya!

Would you test our game?

We tried to make a fun, replayable game for this Ludum Dare (our first Ludum) and we are quite happy with the results. What would you change?

You can Invert the controls in the options menu, or just before starting to play.

SHIP-WRE-KT Art

Hi all. After hibernating and recovering from the weekend, I thought I'd share a little process art stuff. For many of us, this was our first point and click adventure game, and we also had several artists trying to align to a single style, so there was a lot of visual planning to get to our final result. Please give us a play so we can get enough votes to receive a rating, thank you!

After coming up with the idea of a robot with draining battery life (and then the plot that he finds another robot that he needs to power), we explored those characters, which allowed one artist to get started on that.

characters.jpg

Then we spent a lot of time planning the levels. Here are some quick wireframes to validate the concept, defining some of the interactions and asking ourselves, well, would this be fun?

wires.jpg

The next day, a couple of us fleshed out a game flow, using a wall and lots of post-its. This gave us all our points of interaction, the level and object design needed to accomplish that, logic for the battery draining, and all the points of dialogue. This mess was translated into two digital bulleted lits: for all the dialogue, and to define MVP functionality (which of course was still way too big, haha, lesson for next time).

IMGem20190501/em121130.jpg

Then we did a moodboard of other games and ideas that inspired us; we found games with a pixel density we liked, some drab color examples, and researched old operating system design. This allowed us to divide and conquer for the next two days, between the map and object art, characters, cut-scenes, logo, and UI.

Here is what we ended up with!

Cat Animation 101 - a little series - Part One

get started!

gattocamminagif.gif

They main challenge I faced for this Ludum Dare was animating Zoltan's cats. You see cats doing all the things cat do and I wanted them to look as real as possible. I've never done anything like this before and I'm so happy I did!

I'm a programmer, but the two Ludum Dare I've done so far I decided to challenge me with graphics: I wasn't even sure this could be done properly in such a short time. So here is are a little series on my process, for those of you that would like to start making their own graphics.

This is not the right way or the only way to do it, but it worked! I was able to draw quickly with a good tradeoff between speed and quality.

You can find any kind of stock animation around, but making your own graphics is so satisfying and makes your game unique. So here is how you can do. Of course basic drawing skills are needed but not so crucial in my opinion, because even the strangest wobbly traced character will work well if it's animated right.

First of all if you are serious about animation, grab this book.

immaginipostanimazione_01.gif

It is the bible, you won't probably need anything else. There are also great videos of it you can find on YouTube. The first and most important move you want to animate is walk. Turns out that walk cycles will be also the most difficult animation you will make, so start with it and everything will be easier after :) Bipeds walks are different from 4 leg walks, but they all have the so called "contact positions" that is when each foot touches the ground. A good way to start is to draw the contact position for each foot and then draw the position between the two, called "passing position". The more frames you add the smoother your animation will be. An easy way to do this is getting an already made sprite sheet and studying it.

Trace on it! There's nothing wrong. This way you'll get familiar with the movement you are drawing.

For Zoltan I picked an old picture of animation studies that shows a rotoscope of cats and dogs jumping. In the early days of animation they would film everything to study the movements this way. And this is what you can do, even with a YouTube video.

Thanks for reading this and I really hope that if there's an animator in you it will come out for a future jam! ;)

Coming up next: my first tries with cats!
