Can you Kill the Wizard?

Ten Minutes to Kill the Wizard is here! Cover.png You only have 10 minutes to kill the evil wizard! You can buy upgrades to help you for gold, however, an additional cost is time removed from the clock! Will you upgrade a lot and speedily finish the wizard? Or will you play it slow and whittle him away with no upgrades? The choice is yours! Screenshot.png https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/ten-minutes-to-kill-the-wizard

What a jam! + Play mine, play yours

Back in it after a year, and boy was it fun (and stressful!). I had less time this jam than in ld41 because of work, but I think the game came out better (it actually has music and decent graphics)!

As per usual, try my game out, then leave a comment below and I'll try yours!

Happy judging!

Harvester is released!

Harvester

Finally, my game Harvester is released onto itch.io! LD44 was a really tough one for me. The theme was downright awful and my first two abandoned prototypes were horrible. By the time I started working on my third game idea, Harvester, there were less than 24 hours left until submissions. However, I somehow managed to pull it off and submit just before the deadline! I'm really happy with how it turned out and it's my best game yet.

Puzzle Doom!

What a great game jam we had! Hope you all enjoy the game!

It's done!!!!

I cannot quite beleive I managed to get something published in time. The last eight hours have been some of the most productive of my life! I didn't have time for sound, but other than that I'm really pleased with the result.

Liquify Bo! Is a silly little platform puzzle game, where our hero must exchange lives for additional platforms, with which to traverse the level.

I've almost killed myself making it - I hope you life it!

Hello everyone! I have published my game, Deep Space Outpost! This is a simulation management game where you build a moon colony in a procedurally generated universe. Sell ore you mine to other landers that visit your base!

While I wasn't able to implement and fix major parts, this jam was very enjoyable and I learned a lot.

This was my first Ludum Dare as a member of a team. It was super fun to work with talanted people and to be able to make art without having to worry about how will I going to implement it haha

Looking forward to playing all your awesome games guys. Too bad LD is only twice a year now

The Harvest

theharvestcover.png

All life in this universe is merely currency to you. As an unfeeling master species, seed solar systems with life, wait for biomass to accumulate and then harvest it to accrue funds. Attack those systems impertinent enough to try and defend themselves. What level of funds can you accrue?

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/the-harvest

What kind of earth elemental are you?

Ludum Dare Banner.png

Lots of people make video games, but what about games of the more analog variety? Elemental Warfare's a 2-4 player card game where you play as warring earth elemental clans. As earth elementals, you have various mineral deposits within your body which you can rip out and sell to merchants. Literally sell off parts of your body for weapons and new minerals!

We made it!

First Jam survived. Its rough and simple as games go, but I'm very proud of our little team of High School THINC students. cloudedminds.JPG.

Unfortunately for the third time I couldn't make it! So long and goodnight!

Better improve upon my skill set and time management for future jams. Here's how far my game 'Life Force' was. LDJAM44__.gif

With every attack the player loses his life force but not to worry. All moving things have life force which can be absorbed. Inspired by Onimusha's soul absorb mechanic! I didn't win the battle this time but I think I got me a cool idea. Until next time!

Another Comfy Game

I usually don't make blog posts about my submissions, but I guess this one is worth it, simply because I made it in 5 hours. Yep. I planned on taking part of this jam, but as I have absolutely no idea of what to do, I almost forgot it. I had the idea of making a quick prayer simulation earlier this afternoon, and here it is. I apologize for the art that is lacking in quality. I hope the cat makes up for it.

Thanks. My game is here: Oblation. logo01 200.gif

Our Jam entry, Rat Lab, is done!

Rat Lab is a game about survival, in which you go through waves of enemies, buying upgrades with the only valuable thing you have: your health!

We had fun making it and lots of little things were a challenge for us. It's far from finished and balanced, but you can still try it, if you want! It's available here

"Takes money"... done!

My first jam after giving up on my 10th compo! I didn't care for the theme, so I decided not to participate and just mess around with a cellular automata experiment instead... then this morning I realised I could turn it into an "art game" and submit it anyway!

We did it. Just in the nick of time!

Introducing: Social Lite!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/social-lite

Make Your Own Level!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/temple-maker

createemyour/emown_level.png

Post Mortem

I only spent 24 working hours in this title, which had a pretty significant impact on what I could do.

I had an absolute maximum available hours of 48--56. This made my efficiency around _42.9%-51.3% Oof!

Things I got done:

*Made something playable! *Made all assets *Actually got some music done *Did some nifty programming stuff *Finished the intro level and the title screen!

Things I didn't get in:

*The story and level outline I had for the game (https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1HbN3XMVaBh1pc7ma8Jb72stW357izyon) *New animations or sprites *Full music complement (I only spent 20 minutes writing the one piano piece I got in) *Full debug and polish of intro level *Showcase the sacrifice mechanic

I had this whole neat mechanic where you can sacrifice a life for more money...which you use to save...lives.

I'll go ahead and spend a week or so finishing what I wanted to do. It'll be good for me to see how many hours it would've taken. Was it feasible to work through my full plan? Was it not?

Also, I learned a ton through this process. It's unbelievable how many little things I hadn't done before and had to learn. I takes way too long to animate tutorials and set up triggers for it. Wow. A full normal level would take less time.

I programmed a lot of object behaviours and procedural stuff that didn't get seen in this build. Because I only got the intro level in. My test level had all the elements. At least there're some particle effects! :stuckouttongue:

All in all. Wonderful experience.

I Made It!: First Jam, VR Game: Chain of Enemies

Wow, this was an experience. I didn't think I would even get all the major bugs ironed out before submission, but I got it done. A VR game in 72 hours solo. The game looks ugly and only has 2 waves, but I'm proud of the mechanics in it. I'm obviously not going to win with a VR game, but I learned a lot more about UE4 and I'm happy to say I've published my first game. Now back to my main VR project.

About the game: My game is called Chain of Enemies, inspired my the Gameboy Advance title, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Its all about combining cards on the fly as you take down waves of enemies. All of the controls are on the right and the basics of cards are behind the spawn. Sorry that its complicated and without a tutorial, but hopefully I'll come back to this at some point and turn it into a full game. If you have a VR headset, check it out! I hope you enjoy. CoECover5.png

Introducing: Bloodbarn

So pleased to have finished this wonderfully silly game with my good friend @BrainoidGames.

game3.jpg

I hope you enjoyed your weekend, and that you're proud of what you've accomplished!

We made it in time with Coinscape!

Gotta love power-cuts right before submissions... We somehow still managed to fix all errors and submit in time! Play as an Egyptian coin not willing to get spent, escaping from hands and birds trying to catch it! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/coinscape Screenshot_20190430-033953.png

Now here is a story all about how my life got turned flipped upside down

I was trying to publish with github, but I'd never used it before. with 12 minutes left, I switched to dropbox. I had the link. I clicked publish with 2 minutes left. The ludum dare server had glitched and it logged me out. By the time I logged back in the game button stopped working and I couldn't publish. Now my time and the person I worked on this game with's time was wasted. Please, is there something you could do to let me publish Ludum Dare?

Faery Tales is done!

title.png

This is my first LD (or game jam period) game. Its a platformer where you need to avoid combat and use tricks to get the enemies eliminated. Every time you shoot, your life is taken away.

The game is moddable - levels were created in tiled and exported as jsons. you can make your own tilesets too and even change the behavior of the player character.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/faery-tales

Another Successful Jam

Another successful ~~Compo~~Jam. Didn't have time to finish during the compo, so jam it was.

It's been a year or more since my last Ludum Dare. Decided to make a clicker game, something I've never made before, figured it was small enough in scope, and probably wouldn't get too many submissions that were also clickers, given the theme. Figured a clicker with a survival mechanic would be interesting, since clickers usually don't have a 'game over' state, typically increasing in numbers with no challenge. I've enjoyed making this game and already have ideas on how I could expand upon it: new features, extra content, possibly difficulty settings. Who knows.

Hopefully my next Ludum Dare is sooner than my previous.

Screenshot

Second game jam, but first good one.

This is the first game jam i actually enjoyed and liked. The game was made by me and the help of my Father, its basic and has no real flavor, but it's finished!! Our Game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/the-capitalists-curse

GARUA

OK we don't love this game too much,

But at least we finished on time!

This is without a doubt the least polished game we released...

It's a mini metroidvania where you can buy upgrades with your blood,

and can bet on your blood in battles to earn more blood.

IT'S BAD!

If you're having a hard time try grinding a lot of health in the easier rooms lol.

Finally Complete

This was my second Ludum Dare and it was an experience I do not regret. For the past four hours I worked on this game without breaks and submitted just seconds before the deadline. My game barely fits the theme and was not entirely play tested either due to lack of time. Overall this was a great weekend.

Our second LD entry

lifeloan_cover.png

Today we have finished development of our second LD game (third game for a game jam in general). Perhaps some of you remember our previous entry Drunken Soviet.

This time we had a real blast with development as the theme really resonated well with us. In fact, we spent the last few days nearly without sleep constantly working on implementing features and tweaking things. In the end the game we ended up with might not be the most complete product but it's at the very least playable.

We really liked the idea however and are even considering working on a full version with much more involved and complex mechanics. :)

Cheers!

First Ludum Jam (Kinda)

I can't believe that Zam and I finished in time the game (with no noticeable mayor bugs). This is the first time that I upload a game for the Ludum Jam and I'm really happy about how it turned out at the end. I already participated in another Ludum (the 39th) but we couldn't finish the game so...

At least I can't say that I didn't try.

Here's the game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/abduct-me

Also one of the robots in the game because I just find them cute.

First jam done

We made it! This is our first Jam so far but I would hope on behalf of all of us that it wouldn't be the last. The game is not polished well enough, but we are sure that it still gives you that exact unique experience of correcting things that you yourself have done wrong. Speaking of fixing errors - the game you see here is actually only one level of a bigger game which - in the last moment - we decided not to include.

What we are trying to say is: always think things through and be one step ahead of yourself. Come to an understanding with your traits that can (and probably will) affect your productivity and quality of your work, accept them and forgive yourself if something doesn't go as planned.

We wish every one of you a great start of the week and ask you to play our game!!

I've had some problems with a function not working when builded (even though it worked into Unity), but managed to fix it. I'm very satisfied with this experience of my first game jam ever. Can't wait to the next Ludum Dare!

Give a try to my game!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/slimevery/

Life, uh, finds a way…

…of getting in the way. I came close – not quite close enough, but I made a lot more progress than ever before, and I have a jumpstart on the engine for later. Maybe another stab at competition, maybe an independent release, who knows.

Age of Coin - Battle Stars: ULTRA

Wow, what a crazy 72h it has been. This isn't my first LD, but it is my first time doing the Jam category (had a teammate this time). I had no idea how much more tiring it would be. It was both of our first time using Godot but it's a great engine and we had a blast making Age of Coin - Battle Stars: ULTRA a Mario meets Yugioh game about coin collectors and the battles between them. If that sounds appealing to you, check us out:

First LD Down - Many More To Go!

I had been trying to do a Jam for a year now but the timing never worked out. What a hectic and fun experience. 35 hours of total work - I just barely missed the Compo submittal by about 2-3 hours. It was definitely due to the growing pains of new development: Learned how to do flat art. First deployment for WebGL. First index.html troubleshooting. Learned how to use Itch.io and LD websites. Learned texture sampling. And built a game while I was at it!

Introducing: Plague Machine. A simulation/RPG/Mancala-esque game about making a deal with the Devil to stave off death by killing Cities of people.

We have submitted our pottery game, this was the closest to the deadline we've ever been I think - literally 5 minutes to go!

Will try and do a proper update after some sleep (it's nearly 4am here). Anyway you can check out the game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/seize-the-clay

Sweet Sweet Witch Hunt

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/sweet-sweet-witch-hunt

Here it is, our 2D action pretty witch hunt game with arcade shooter's elements mixed in it. For a team composed mainly by 1st time jammers, it was really interesting to see how we managed to progress during this project.

PamyWitch2.png

From within the forbidden woods, witches compete among themselves to decide who is the superior sweetooth of these parts by kidnapping annoying children and turning them into candies.

Be part of the Sweet Sweet Witch Hunt controlling Karol Conkah, the bewitching little witch, and become the queen of the woods. But beware that George Congie, the infamous witch hunter, lies in wait deep into the forest, on a futile attempt to save those kids.

print.JPG

What we tried to do but failed to get done before the deadline due to time constraints and fadigue: - 4 player competitive play (with AI); - Alternative game mode where you controlled the hunter.

We'll be waiting for your feedback. :)

This is my first LDJam. I had to travel and could start only on the last day! This is my humble submission, made in 4 hours, only 3 levels (didnt do level design also, but will be updating it). Do let me know your comments.

Première LD ! Our first LD!

Team

As usual, we are two in the Team. Sébastien "Skyalogia" for the graphics and Jordan "Vuvuzuella" for the code. We have a team name : La Poulperie.

What we think about Ludum Dare.

This jam is exellent for everyone, from Beginner to Expert! She is very fair with everyone allow us to make some abstraction from differents parts of our games (music, humour, fun etc..). Organization rocks ! Vote system is really cool! For our first LD, we were very surprized about the "human" aspect of this jam, everyone encourage others to finish their games!

Things we have to improve

During this jam, we saw some points that we have to improve. User feedback is very important in game design, that's why we think to learn how to makes feeling better for the player. Adding particles, light effects, shadows and some screenshakes will be our goal now! Learn how to make better GUIs etc.. Skyalogia worked half time alone, 'cause i was working all the week-end evenings.. But i did it !

What's next ?

For us, this is our favorite jam and we think we continue to participate! We work on another project to improve our skills. It will be on itch.io!

Bye !

"We Pay In Blood" Post Mortem!

Alright, it's time to do one of these again!

The Idea

This was my 4th Ludum Dare and it was probably the best one, to be honest. Once I saw the theme, I knew I wanted to go for a fighting game because, you know, currency to buy upgrades, and life is crucial in any type of combat. With this in mind, my friends helped me brainstorm and the words "arena" and "paying for weapons" started to pop up with a few ideas. "Boxhead" (it's an older, flash game) started to come up in my mind as I thought about this and so I decided to use it as my main inspiration. Here's what the first prototype looked like (around the 2 hour mark):

Beginning of Day 2.gif

The Execution

The Code

Honestly, everything went WAY smoother than what it should have. If you look at my source code, it is one of the messiest things I have ever designed (I still got confused creating weapons even after creating like 5 of them).

These past few weeks, I had been trying to improve my code to automate most of my day-to-day tasks. Because of this, I noticed that my prototyping skills, where you don't really have the time nor need to automate stuff, are completely gone, so I had to hard-code a ton of stuff (don't even ask me about how I did the character rotation, it's not pretty). BUT, everything still worked fine, and what didn't was fixed in an hour or so, which is not bad at all.

What Went Well:

  • The core code got done super quickly, which gave me time to focus on art and sound (usually never happens);
  • Even though it's not pretty, I'm pretty happy with my combat design since it was my first time making any type of shooter AND any type of top-down;

What Went Bad:

  • My code is so ugly that I will give $10 to anyone that can explain me how it works.

The Art

I'll be honest, I was just purely lazy on this one.

I'm not known for my art skills, that's for sure. For some reason, I ran into several problems when I tried to set up some simple animations and I didn't want to get frustrated in the first few hours of the jam, so I moved on and actually enjoyed the way it was, so, yeah :shrug_tone1:

What Went Well:

  • Even though I still don't consider it "good", it is a major improvement on my previous jams and games in general, especially in the UI design;

What Went Bad:

  • Couldn't implement animations
  • The game was still not as visually appealing as I wished it was

Screenshot_001.PNG

The Sound

My mics have been pretty messed up the past few months, so I ran into the problem of how I would make SFX. I usually am against this, but hey, I was desperate and went to "Freesound" and got some good enough SFX from there.

The music was all me though, and I am actually proud of those 3 pieces I managed to make during Day 2!

What Went Well:

  • I'd consider my music to be decent, overall. One of the songs is a pump song, the other is slightly eerie, and the other one is just calm, yet unsettling, which I was pleased with.

What Went Bad:

  • Mic situation, I could've made some artificial SFX, but I just don't think that would've fit this game.

Conclusion

Honestly, I loved making "We Pay In Blood" and it's the most complete I have ever felt after a jam, even if the theme wasn't really my favourite one.

  • The code was smooth, even if ugly.
  • The art got improved, which was actually very good for me.
  • The sound was okay, but I'm sure it'll be better in the future!

Hopefully the following jams go as well as this one!

CREAM

I've finished making the game a while ago. If there's anything I learned from this game jam is to not procrastinate until nearly the last minute. There are some bugs in the game that I haven't gotten around to yet but if you have the time please check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/cream

It's a game where you pay your bills.

I squashed some of the bugs, kept some just for the heck of it. Here it is, the game in which you want to get yourself hurt for the insurance money!

It's been one hell of a ride, a lot of ups and downs, I've seen you motivated and discouraged, unhappy with the progress or excited to work on your games, but we made it! Even those of us who didn't finish are now forever part of the LD44 experience. Thanks everyone for making my first ever Ludum Dare a great one. And after some well earned sleep it's game time! Looking forward to playing all the crazy cool games you made!

Woodland Warfare - Ludum Dare 44!

Capture.PNG Ok, so... After a long weekend of not much sleep and juggling D&D sessions and avoiding spoilers for Endgame, we finished a first version of Woodland Warfare!!!

I've been participating in game jams since a little over a year ago and I don't know why I always end up adapting the jam's theme so that I can make another one of my beloved shoot 'em up games. Lately I've been growing tired of it, however, so I tried to shake things up a little bit with something more slow paced.

For Woodland Warfare, I tried to build on a risk/reward system; every action you take makes you more vulnerable (to varying degrees of success).

This game felt way more challenging that all the other ones I've made so far. Take, for example, the grid system and interactions and validations needed for the GUI, along with all of the other little systems that needed to be built from the ground up and that I'd never implemented before.

Also, balancing and progression is HARD and time demanding, especially while you're juggling programming and asset assembling in Unity (You can make up your own minds about how successful I was at it after you play it).

In the end, this was another fun project for the Ludum Dare that I'm proud to have in my hands, and thanks to Prideling and Kevzapata for the amazing art for this game! I love you guys!

So now that you made it all the way down here, why don't you grab a friend and beat them at some Woodland Warfare!
