My first game jam— completed!

That was really something exciting! I just barely managed to put something together within the time constraints, a minimalistic little action-packed game. It's not wildly impressive or anything, and I didn't have the time to fine-tune everything— but it is my first game after all and I'm happy I made it. I've been playing with Godot for a while but only now have I finally pushed myself to make a complete game with it.

I made all the assets and the game by myself during the jam.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it!

Elemental Warfare: Post-Mortem

Rather than making a video game this year, I decided to make a card game. I've always wanted to make tabletop games (in particular tabletop roleplaying games and war games) just because they allow you to be a lot more creative with an initial concept and really run with it. You're no longer bogged down by the technical or logistical aspects of making a game and can instead just purely focus on design language.

What I Wanted to Do

I was really not into the theme when I first saw it, and to be honest I still don't really like it. However, I did think it would make for some really cool board game ideas. For a while I was struggling between two ideas: 1) stock market themed deckbuilding game with a single, shared deck that players add cards to as a way to manipulate the stock market and 2) a card game about earth elementals that use parts of their body to fight, heal, and buy items. I went with the latter, but I still really like the other idea and will probably revisit it at some point.

The Initial Playable (Day 1)

After about a day of writing down basic rules and making all the cards, I had a playable to run.

The original playable had players draft cards out of a hand of 8 during the eating phase. This was partially because drafting is one of my favorite mechanics in all card games, definitely up there with guessing games and bluffing. However, with a phase of the game that overall had very little strategy (of course I'll choose stuff like Iron or Gold over Stone and Soil) there was just no point and it took up way too much time.

The most broken thing about this build was the ability to quad wield weapons, letting you stack something ridiculous like 4 Greatswords.

Playable #2 (Day 2)

This build is much closer to the current game. Notable changes include only being able to dual wield at maximum, a simplified eating system, nerfing weapon damage across the board, rebalancing the trade deck, and simplifying market trades.

This playtest was notable for me topdecking 3 Iron out of the first turn, letting me purchase a Spear (at the time Spears had 6 ATK instead of 4). Then I proceeded to topdeck 3 Gold the next turn, letting me purchase a Crossbow (which had 12 ATK back then and costed 2 Gold). Bullying ensued and weapons were nerfed again.

What Went Well

For once I feel like I have an actual finished game for Ludum Dare. So I guess that's something worth celebrating. Making a card game let me just quickly get my ideas into something that can be fully played start to finish, which let me spend most of the jam refining mechanics and balancing the game rather than creating the technical framework for how the game would work. It's really quite refreshing to just change a few words on a piece of paper to add new gameplay.

What Went Poorly

The game is greatly slowed down by the trade phase, which I feel takes too much time to really process all the potential gains you can get. Currently, you have 5 different merchant cards you can trade with, along with all the trades that are always available via the market. You also have to think about how you're going to allot minerals from your inventory and how you're going to distribute your defenses for the upcoming combat phase. It's just so much slower than "draw 3 cards and choose between the 2 effects" or "choose a limb to attack". However, the trade phase is still meant to be the more strategic part of the game, so its very hard to strike a good balance between complexity and speed.

Final Thoughts

I don't think I've ever had this much fun (and this little stress) during a jam before. Making an analog game just feels so much more relaxed and so much more fun.

I wish I did have more time to playtest the game though. I didn't get to test the current build before publishing it, so it may or may not be completely broken. Likely, stonewalling is a bit too easy to do right now if anything.

Either way, I hope you enjoy Elemental Warfare even if it's a broken mess!

I will continue to stand tall and proud, cause I was litterally pushing my max limits and trying EVERYTHING to see what I could make of the mess that became, next one will be more about making the actual game tho.. (I reallly LOVE the graphics I did for it tho)

ABOUT the DEV tho

I will be seriously producing the full dev work for this story and push the mechanics to match the quality graphics it's putting out tho

Post-Mortem #1

What a ride. This was definitely one of the most fun Compo experiences I had. Wanted to write up an initial post-mortem a day after the Compo ended, and then I'll do another one after playing other people's games and seeing the results.

First things first, I made a game! And I'm really happy with the result. Check out Bartleby in Space here

BartlebyGif.gif

During theme voting, I saw the theme Space Exploration and really liked it (apparently I was the only one). I thought up this idea about an astronaut that you moved by thrusting through zero-g space, who would go on adventures and meet strange creatures. Then when the theme was announced, I initially thought I'd have to come up with something new. But in brainstorming, I thought about oxygen as a currency, realized it could be perfect for a space game, and my concept was reborn, this time with a time-sensitive element.

The first night, I was able to get almost all of the core systems up and running, which was hugely helpful going into the second day. Movement, interacting with NPCs, and the map screen were all sorted within a couple of hours (I'm in LA, so this was between 7 (had to see Endgame first) and 11 pm or so). The map proved to be key in particular, since I hadn't initially thought of it but realized it was the key to make the game playable so you aren't perpetually lost. I was ahead of schedule significantly, so I made most of my NPC art assets that night.

Day 2 was going to be all about creating a full game from start to finish. I ran into some road blocks due to not being an exceptional programmer. Because the whole game is built around your inventory and NPCs particular wants, there needed to be a system to check what items you have, check what items the NPCs want and are offering in exchange, and display all that information to a text box. I really struggled to build something elegant and ended up hardcoding a ton of values in an inventory array. It wasn't pretty, but it did eventually work. Which I guess is a decent lesson for a game jam: if you can't get it done right, get it done somehow.

I got to play around with some new features in Unity as well, particularly the UI Canvas and Text Mesh Pro, which I had never used before. They were pretty easy to pick up, which turned out to be great for me because I think it added a high level of polish to the trading quests.

screen_octo.jpg

By around 10 pm that night I had a fully playable quest line. I was then able to dive into the start and endgame flow, with time to give it some nice fades and decent UI. I sort of fell into a zone that night, which was incredibly productive but led to me staying up til about 4 am, which I generally try to avoid.

Day 3 was all about audio and crushing bugs. I no nothing about making music, so I used an auto-generator and some basic bfxr. Maybe for next time I will try to learn something so that I can make simple music. Especially because its a space game, I imagine it would be relatively easy to create a simple, ethereal backing track, but I wouldn't even know where to start right now.

I ran into one final problem in my final playtesting: because of how I built the UI, the game only works in 16:9. No problem, just force Unity to only play in that aspect ratio. Except Mac wasn't respecting that. So for now, there is no Mac build. But I did add a WebGL version so hopefully Mac users can still play it.

All in all, it was a great compo, mainly because I think I scoped appropriately from the beginning and came up with a concept that played to my strengths (art and writing) while minimizing my weaknesses (the programming was relatively simple and the movement system was basic).

screen_hubble.jpg

This was also my first experience streaming, and I had a lot of fun. I plan to stream more in the future and plan to stream myself playing and rating games. So if you want to come by twitch.tv/carlsonandpeeters, I'll play any game sent to me in the chat.

Congrats to everyone who participated, and hope you are all resting now. Looking forward to playing so so many games over the next three weeks.

My first LD game, and first ever "finished" game :D

print.jpeg

The experience

While i have previously participated in a Game Jam, this was by far, the actual experience i was looking for. Before, I went with a partner, and took care of the audio-visual elements while he programmed and made all the logic stuff work. Even though we were pretty close to it, we didn't finish the game, nor did we upload it, and that made me very sad for it was my first, and I had big expectations. Fast forward to this Friday, Ludum Dare caught my attention, and I told to my self "One more time", but this time, I decided to do it all alone, and oh boy, was it hard, for not only did I have low experience regarding programming, but I had to split the time between developing the game, and other personal stuff (most probably, like everyone else here), thus I lost half a day, at a point, I even decided it was time to stop, that I've failed again and went to bed, but the next day came, and there i was continuing the development, until it was time to upload it.

The Idea

So I went to my girlfriends home on Friday, and asked her to help me with and idea for a game related to the theme (Your life is currency), while I came up with the idea of having to buy upgrades for the character with your life points, which also determine how many times you can respawn, she came up with the hole concept: Mr. Apple, needs to escape from the hunters, and get to the forest, for they desire nothing but to take and drink our juicy blood. Well.. even though that's what I accomplished, the scope was way bigger: While Mr.Apple finds his way to the forest and avoids the hunters, he was to save other fruits, trapped ones, and ones that were being hunted, but that never made into the final game.

What went bad

So, yeah, I knew it was going to be hard, but man it was even harder than what I've anticipated, not necessarily was it hard to make the game work you know? But mentally, it's a lot of pressure, and that's actually good. But back to the topic, I modeled, textured and animated the assets pretty quickly, and those were the first things I did after planning the game of course. Mid way into development, time to actually do it was hard to find, went to watch avengers (which is superb by the way), had some university things to do and obviously, spend some time with my girl, and some other stuff.. While I don't regret doing any of these things instead of developing the game, it costed quite a lot, for if I had used this time the quality of the final product would be much better, and specially, if I had been more careful, I wouldn't have to redo the hole menu systems in like, the last hour before having to upload the game. Yeah, that was pretty frustrating, but obviously my fault, as i didn't make the UI elements responsive, and when i made the build, buttons went all over the place, I thought i was going to use the last hour or so to generate the light maps so that the shadows would be calculated perfectly, well, that was never done too, for after I "fixed" the UI elements Unity decided it was time to crash, and for some reason, it corrupted one of my scripts, and I basically had to redo it too, the problem is, I had only about 5 minutes, so I decided to use a shortcut, and did some jerry-rigging, the problem with that, is well spoiler alert.. The vitality upgrade not only became useless but the player was now invincible, so the "youDied" menus i created and redid not long before this, were unused as well  Not only that, I didn't get to balance the Seed Gun upgrade, I was going to add a rate of fire, but completely forgot by the time i made the final build.

Could have been better, time to learn

Yeah so, maybe being more careful and doing some better planning before actually making the game would have benefited me, but after all, it was very much worth it, and i'll take everything that I learned with me forever, from developing the game myself, and from seeing other people do it here.

Thank You

Quest for a home

I knew I was going to be quite limited on time for this LD and I wanted to get my 12 year old son involved in LD so we attended a meetup on Friday night and had a nice time while we got started on our concept. He actually came up with the idea that the main character would be a homeless person trying to get food. We worked on the idea and decided that the player would have 7 days to help turn the homeless person's life around.

The player has to make decisions, do work for people in exchange for food and items (which can be traded for food) or conserve energy by passing on work or doing it poorly (while hopefully not angering the local people).

hunger.PNG

While we did not finish, most of the systems are functional, you can actually play through the entire week and do jobs each day. I did not have time to get much in the way of art into the game, there were also plans for the player to meet a dog, adding another way for the player to spend precious food (or not, you evil person!). I am planning on adding in the base systems and probably throwing a little artwork at the game just to button it up. Another day or so and I would have release it as complete.

I'm really happy with how it turned out. During the middle of development we had some trouble figuring out how to make the decisions feel interesting and how to make it visually interesting, but everything came together at the end.

NecroBlood

Print2.png

Lore

You are a Necromancer that is constantly raided by "Heroes", luckly, you know how to call the dead to protect yourself, but it has a cost, every ritual made for summoning a creature needs a blood sacrifice.

How it works

Necromancer's Blood

The same HP that commands when you lose is the currency for buying minions.

Minions

Zombie

You need to have a grave on the floor, when it hits someone that is about to die, this someone have 50% of chances of becoming a zombie. Zombies lose HP over time. Attack type: Surrounding area. Swarm Debuff: Yes

Vampire

Fast, but fragile. A Vampire can regen his HP by attacking, doing it will regen a little bit of the necromancer's Blood. Attack type: Single Swarm Debuff: No (Single Target)

Skeleton

Slow, Weak and fragile. But cheap! When a Skeleton is not engaged in a battle, it returns to his spawnpoint. Attack Type: Surrounding area. Swarm Debuff: Yes

Heroes

Thief

Fast and it can get closer to his target before being detected. Attack Type: Surrounding area. Swarm Debuff: Yes

Mage

It will flee away from close combat, until it has between 60~100% of the attack range, then, he will shoot a magic sphere that damages the first enemy it contacts. Attack Type: Ranged. Swarm Debuff: No. (Single Target)

Warrior

Strong, Though and ignores SwarmDebuff. He is a nightmare. (And yes, it will get a little nerfed in the future) Attack Type: Surrounding area. Swarm Debuff: No (Imune to SwarmDebuff)

*Swarm Debuff divides your damage by the amount of enemies hit by the attack.

I Hope you have lots of fun playing this game. Post on the game's comments how long did you survived.

BOB is finally here

Hey guys,

As I posted other arts from the game and some people liked it, here is the real deal, now pretty much fixed and working like a charm. intro.gif It was our first LD and we're definetly excited about the finished game. Certainly we're going to participate in many other Jams.

Emma et le monde des marteaux

A Quick post to say that for my first Ludum Dare I enrolled my two daughters: Lily 7 years old and Clea 10 years old. We had fun creating this little familly game! Clea and Lily did the 2D arts while we shared the designed and I coded everything with Tiny Project in Unity. It is also my first project with Tiny, a perfect occasion to learn ECS, by the Way great Work Unity people, keep on the good work and delever us a fully functional Tiny ECS versio of Unity very soon!

To play it: Emma is a small girly game avatar living in the Hammers' and flowers' world! She has a magic ability: She can give her health to the flowers she loves so much. But beware, Flowers are linked to the hammers sharing their same color! So choose the right ones or loose! Color all the flowers in the level to win (Sorry only one level, it was hard enough to make it so far in so few time!)

Finished!

Play here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/rent-for-life

In “Rent for Life”, you play as Skully McSkull the Reaper (Skully for short) who has not always been the most prompt in paying his bills, but he’s a pretty OK tenant. He takes modest care of his humble shack home in his own corner of Hell, raising his loving canine companion. So when the Landlord of Hell approaches you with threats of eviction, Skully better get back to collecting the local currency: the souls of the living.

This top down 3-D game will send you to the mortal world where you will race against time to collect the souls of the living! A grim responsibility, yes, but your fiery homeland doesn't run on rainbows and kittens. Do your best to keep up your rent payments, or face the wrath of your landlord...

Just a simple game~

Hope you enjoy it~~

Also you can leave yours here for me to try!

Snek Farm

title.png

For this Ludum Dare me and a couple of friends made this little snake game:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/snek-farm

It's a spin on the popular Snake, but with simple farming mechanics you pay for with your own health (length).

There were so many more things we wanted to add: enemies, a high score system, more variation to the graphics, more music... but we didn't have the time. The game is still very solid and actually promising, so we might make a post jam version with all the things we couldn't put in because of time!

I had so much to do over the weekend and could only work so much on it, but I'm happy of how it came out!

Please consider giving it a try and rating it :)

Hey everyone

do try our game lifesacoin(https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/$142178) it is a fps platformer where you health is determined by the number of coins you have as you collect more and more coina you get heavier and hence you wont be able to jump higher you will also face turrets which you can take down by shooting you coins :).hope you guys will enjoy the game:) IMG-20190429-WA0022.jpg

Thank you all

Hello everyone and congratulations for this weekend!

It was my first gamejam in a group and... WOW what a great experience, when I talked about it with @zetius we didn't even think we could finish what we wanted to do but we did and this little game, Life of Food was not that easy to realize, both for him who was in charge of the soundtrack and the art style, and for me for integration and development.

menu - Copie.png

Thanks to all those who have already played our game and even more to those who have given us feedback. Among all those received we were able to obtain information that will be very useful for the next gamejam, here are some of them:

  • Do not use software for the first time a few hours before the jam

Indeed, the lack of knowledge of it has caused us to lose LOT of time in unnecessary research. - We should create a briefing of what we really want to do

The final game produced, although we are proud of it, is not the one we wanted at the beginning - Spend more time discussing and talking about the theme and the gameplay that we can do with that theme.

We're going to be honest, there's not much, if any, gameplay in our game - Testing, testing, testing, testing......

A thousand tests is not enough

Finally, a huge BRAVO to all those who have completed the challenge, if your game seems null or incomplete to you it is normal but you can be proud of yourself, you have done it. For those who have not finished it and are disappointed in them, it doesn't matter, thanks to that you can know your limits and you will do better next time!

You are all AWESOME.

This is AWESOME! I LOVE LUDUM DARE

For this edition, I managed to create a fully working gameboy game rom that can still be played on pc and mobile phones thanks to a javascript emulator.

But the awesome @jjjjason managed to put the rom in a real gameboy clone, and I feel so proud and satisfied that my work is now into a console of someone.. I have goosebumps!

Mini Post- Mortem on my game

icon.jpg

I had a day less to work on the title so the first think i will need for the next LD is free time for the full event. Here is what i learned.

To Improve:

  • I need better planning, even when i did some planning on a scheudle i didnt write down what i wanted to develop. I just noted ideas and gameplay general idea.
  • I started doing the basic behaviours, in the end this was bad, because i had fully working elements but kind of a mess implementing all, for the shake of playability and funniness. So, next time i should start creating the big systems like win/lose conditions and scene management.
  • UI. Well i know my ui sucks. Next time i should start giving some love to the UI. I promise.
  • Sounds and FX. Well i think i did all the sound with 5 files generated random. Indeed sounds need more love for the next time.
  • Improve Player Experience with more information!!
  • Ship speed is slow at the beggining for the shake of upgrades. next time the speed feeling should be right from beggining.

Good things:

  • From the community i find a nice site to generate random sounds. This is a nice trick.
  • I started from scratch and the develop was smooth and on time.
  • I knew what to cut to be on scheudle.
  • Particles and all the moving things on the screen seem to be working without any lags. Yay!

Overall im happy with the experience and was a good trainning. Maybe next time i take it more serious and go for the Compo!

Cheers. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/life-is-money-captain

Bloodlust

Hey there Ludum Dare people!

I'm enjoying playing all of your games so far! So far I'm at 30 ratings given and would love to play more. Now for an update on my game: It was brought to my attention that my game doesn't really shine unless you see someone actually play it, so I thought I'd show off a gif!

It's done!

Alright, Ludum Dare 44 is finally completed.

With our initial idea we might have bitten off a bit more than we could chew and so the game turned out a bit smaller than what was originally planned.

Still, we are quite happy with the outcome!

If you have a spare minute, come check it out!

Angry Planet Workflow

This was my first Ludum Dare since a long time and i totally enjoyed it. Despite the fact that i only had one day effectively it was a super calm run this time. I reduced my goals more then ever and had a good amount of time with my wife and kids outside in the sun. That surely helped being productive. Yes, there were many things i wanted to to but didn't had the time for but this time i knew that beforehand. That helped.

I just wanted to share some key aspects of my workflow:

Field recording
I wanted to do some field recording for this game and had two takes in the end: One in the forest, the other at a busy street. Having to go outside for game content is something i really can recommend afterwards. Unfortunately there was no thunderstorm this weekend, i could have used that :)

20190428em182646.png 20190428/em175856.png

Drawings
Another thing i wanted to do for a long time but only now had the chance for was using a light table and scanner for having pencil art in the game. This worked out much better then i hoped for. The workflow was smooth and fast and I'm really happy with the result. One draw...back was everything turned out a little bit too tiny and i couldn't scale the assets without loosing details.

IMG_3114.png

Sfx & music
For the sound effects i recorded my voice and pitched it in garageband. Simple but sufficient.
Surprisingly the hardest part this time was the music. It was really close to the deadline already and i struggled with the atmosphere i wanted to create.
I'm happy with the result but one big letdown for me is, that the overall mix is way too low. I did everything with headphones and it sounded ok. Note to myself: Test the game at least once with a plain setup.

IMG_3118.png

Overall a good one this time. For the first time to be precise :)
See you next time around.

Little update for Escape from Hell

After a day of existance, Escape from Hell has received several returns... Thanks ;)
One came back several times; the player moves slowly and this makes the game tedious.
I made a small update to solve this problem!

Escape from Hell

Let's play each others games!

Yooo, I'm feeling pretty bored right now and want to play some cool LD games. So link them already dammit! I'm currently on a macbook, so I would rather some mac builds. Gonna be on windows in a few hours, so they're fine too.

And now if you feel so and have time, go play this EPIC game of ours. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/a-life-at-stake

Endgame or Ludum Dare? I combined them in my game. Web + phone compatible.

Play Superhero Movie Universe Simulator and produce your own series of superhero movies.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/superhero-movie-universe-simulator

You choose which heroes fight which villains.

Try to produce as many movies as possible without losing the balance between Comedy/Drama, Action/Dialog, Readers/Moviewatchers and High Stakes/Low Stakes. If this happens you are out. So if you need Drama, feel free to kill off characters.

Brothers in Prejudice: Columbian Bam Bam

widescreen.jpg

screenshot.jpg

Miami, Florida, 1984

Take aim in this bargain bin Hotline Miami clone, shooting up the bad guys as two of the department's highest ranking detectives. Dodging enemy fire like a badass will net you sweet, sweet cash, but be careful - take too many hits, and the department will let you go.

To slow down time, use your dash move (L2/Right Click) near enemy fire. If you're up for some extra difficulty, try finishing the game as much left over money as you can.

A controller is recommended, but not required. Sound and other options can be set by pressing Start or Escape.

Precious is Life

Come and find out what the vampire is missing: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/precious-is-life

preciousgone.png

An incredibly important list of things that all LD developers should do:

  • Name your files. There are one thousand other games with files named LD44. This will simply not do.
  • Nothing sketchy. If there are dodgy looking (Korean??) advertisements on the download page, I won't even bother, because I rather my system clean. No, I am not the one millionth visitor, and no, I don't want your iphone.
  • Avoid using installers at all costs. Some games use third party installing software to package their game. DON'T DO THIS. These set off red alerts on every single antivirus software known to mankind, and if I see such a warning, your game is not getting played. A zip file works magic, we all know what to expect from them, and we all know how to unzip a folder.
  • Try viewing your game page in incognito mode. One of the biggest mistakes to make is providing a link to a project (often on Itch.io) that isn't public. By opening your game page on incognito, you can see what the casual viewer sees, and save the comments on your LD page claiming your link is broken.
  • Give other games a chance. LD is a time constricted space, so not all games will be plated in gold. Pretty cover art and screenshots doesn't mean the game will be good, and basic graphics don't mean the game will be bad. I often find that the inverse is true, as too many people spend 90% of their time on graphics, then realise their game is hollow. Give the ones with simpler graphics a go, you may even discover something innovative, without the time for a crazy level of polish.
  • Still though, include screenshots. It gives us an idea of what to expect. If there's a problem, I can at least know what the game should look like. Whilst I'm not this way, your LD page will often govern whether or not your game is played, and screenshots can help heaps.
  • Think about screen size. I play on my laptop, and too many games are unplayable due to my smaller screen. Whilst it's probably too late to change the supported screen sizes, 1366*768 at least is nice. It is a good idea to add a fullscreen feature, since this will work on almost everything. An issue that is too frequent for my tiny computer screen is that the bottom of the window is cut off by the windows taskbar. In this case, I can't move the window up any further, so I'm missing out on whatever is at the bottom. A fullscreen option can fix this.
  • Web versions do wonders. WebGL versions makes your game more accessible, tenfold. Skip the sketchy download phase and just take me straight to the game.
  • Think about sound. Sound is an afterthought for me too. I'll often spend half an hour on music, when really five times that amount is necessary. And that is OK. But please, include audio controls in the game. I have played all too many games with ear-piearcingly horrid sounds that simply need to be muted, and it would be so much nicer for a control to exist in game.

I hope these helped. I've applied as many of these tips as possible, and I hope you do too, to help us play and rate your game.

Gaming for Life

I didn't have too much time balancing the game, so it might have ended up on the easy side a bit, but you be the judge on that. What's your best time? 2260b.png

My Jam Entry: ChronoCorp

Another jam, and another day. Congratulations to everyone who submitted! :D

I felt pretty good going into this jam, after my entry into the Ludum Dare Discord Jam came second! :O

For my game I was heavily inspired by the movie In Time (<3 Justin Timberlake). My game is a speedrunners dream with multiple ways of tackling the level.

I plan on taking this game further because I really think the concept is solid, but if you guys could give me a rating, and more importantly a comment with some feedback, that would be awesome! Thanks everyone.

ChronoCorp: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/chronocorp

Also, if there are any artists/modellers out here who are interested in working on a project, I'm on the look out so leave a comment as well.

Thanks again, and good luck everyone! :D
