Bug Fixes

It is now way more likely that levels will be completable in our rogue-like, Shadow Seekers. It turns out that the entrance creator was setup wrong and was not working correctly so I fixed it and just published the changes. Although still find it weird how it worked right up until 5 pm Monday. Please check it out!

Powerbot 9044: a post-release-post-mortem

Well, this has definitely been one of the more unusual LDJams I've participated in. Usually, I either participate on-time, or I completely miss that LD is underway until it's already well done and gone. This time was different; I remembered LD was happening ~19 hours into the Jam, went "oh CRAP", and jumped straight into a new design-doc to work out what game I'd make this time. Settled initially just on "something with a robot where all your weapons, armor, etc use your personal battery & if you run out, it's game over", thinking it'd probably be a top-down wave-shooter in the vein of The Fallen, with the notable gimmick of being able to trade your maximum energy for artifacts that grant new powers and the likes.

That wound up changing to a side-scrolling dungeon-crawler of some kind, and my first 24 hours were mostly spent faffing about in other areas whilst slowly building a character-controller. Not a whole lot of motivation until towards the end of those 24 hours, which saw the starts of a procedural-weapon system. Unfortunately, being that I started late, I only had another ~24 hours to go, and still the motivational troubles persisted. Until the last ~8 hours or so (the final day), at which point I had a stroke of semi-genius on how to do a vaguely Metroidvania-style finite map, and spent the remainder of the day cramming to smooth out the pre-requisites for random map generation, followed by about two hours of massive stress trying to finish the map generator in time to submit.

Unfortunately, I didn't succeed; when the hour hit, the world-generator was suffering some catastrophic failures, and enemies didn't even exist yet. As Submission Hour rolled in to a close, I put up a barebones template page under the Unfinished category w/ a link to the as-of-the-time unfinished Gitlab & Itch.IO pages, and threw in the towel on submitting in time for an actual scored entry. Kept working on it, though, and here we are about a day later and ~75 hours of dev-time in, with a post-release post-mortem. A few hours after Submission Hour closed, I'd managed to fix the world-generator, and over the course of the next day, most of the remaining critical polish got put in - all three sizes of weapon are now available, enemies are present, you can win and lose the game, et cetera. So, while it's a day late, the game is done (for the time being) and now playable via Itch.IO, and the source is available at GitLab.

Screen4.png

My lessons from this Ludum Dare are probably only a pair this time; one, check the bloody calendar to make sure LD isn't already half-over, and two, don't bloody procrastinate playing Breath of the Wild instead of making videogames. Gah. On that note, I'm going to go procrastinate playing Breath of the Wild whilst recovering from that mad development spree. If all goes according to plan, I'll be playing some of your games fairly soon, so if you happen to want feedback, I'd be glad to provide some if you'll leave a comment, though I dunno if my ratings will count, being that my game is Unfinished. Cheers, fellow jammers!

1st of May: Happy Labor Day

work_screen.png

This weekend we all worked hard to get our projects done, but why? Why do we work so hard on these games and ask nothing in return? Because it is fun of course! Now that all our games are done and we had some rest, it is time to enjoy the fruit of our labor. Of course not just the game we made, but all the games other people created as well. The following days I will play as many games as I possibly can and I am looking forward to it! Want someone to play and rate your game, please leave a link in the comments and I will surely take a look. Not quite fed up with work yet? Then you can give my game a try of course: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/the-iron-syndicate

Happy labor day everybody!

Life In Hell

Come try our game!

zpd5AJ.png

Play here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/rent-for-life

In “Rent for Life”, you play as Skully McSkull the Reaper (Skully for short) who has not always been the most prompt in paying his bills, but he’s a pretty OK tenant. He takes modest care of his humble shack home in his own corner of Hell, raising his loving canine companion. So when the Landlord of Hell approaches you with threats of eviction, Skully better get back to collecting the local currency: the souls of the living.

This top down 3-D game will send you to the mortal world where you will race against time to collect the souls of the living! A grim responsibility, yes, but your fiery homeland doesn't run on rainbows and kittens. Do your best to keep up your rent payments, or face the wrath of your landlord...

The making of Transfusion (time lapse)

While creating Transfusion I recorded a time lapse! Check it out if you'd like to see what the process was like of me making my first Ludum Dare game, my first published game, my first attempt at pixel art, my first attempt at music/sfx, etc. I learned so much from this and I can't wait for October!

Microtransaction Mages --- A Post Mortem

banner_6.png

I Made a Thing!

Woo! This was Compo #5 for me, and the timing could have been better for putting aside a weekend to make a game. In addition to approaching finals, I participated in a programming challenge that took up about nine hours on Sunday, so I really had to think hard about how to budget my time.

My strong areas tend to be in Graphics and Audio, so I try to focus on different categories for each event to expand my strengths. Last event, I aimed for top 100 in Overall and Fun, so this event I'm shooting for top 100 in Theme and Mood.

wizurr.png

What Went Well

Overall, I think the jam went pretty well.

  • The Parallax: I brought back one of my favorite visual tricks, parallax! The background scrolls by in all of its layered glory.

  • The Audiovisual Gravy: I prioritized "game feel" elements to fairly good effect, with explosions, button feedback, and camera shake (if you haven't already seen it, I would highly recommend this talk on The Art of Screenshake.

  • The Scope: Although there were a few extra elements I would like to have implemented, I feel like I scoped the project reasonably well and made something that was close to my original vision.

  • The Logo: Before the jam, I made a personal logo to display as the game loads! Here we go, space fish.

  • The "Story": I haven't tried to make a narrative for a Ludum Dare entry before. It's pretty bare-bones, but existent this time around.

orc.png

What Went Poorly

Any project is incomplete without its pitfalls.

  • The Schedule: Once again, I committed around nine hours on Sunday to a programming challenge, so I had to downscope a bit to get a game out on time. This ultimately meant me frantically throwing some audio together in MuseScore and SFXR in the last three hours.

  • The Audio: I'm not particularly fond of the direction I went with the music, but it fits reasonably well. One of these days, I hope to make a simpler rhythm-based game and give the Audio category the love it deserves.

  • The GUI: Man, creating a GUI from scratch in Pygame really drains hours out of the Compo workflow. The advantage of this is that I'm forced to be really deliberate about how I want things to look and interact; the downside is that I have less time to, you know, make the game. Speaking of which...

  • The... Game: It's really not that fun after 30 seconds. I'll pretend it's just a social commentary experience.

cubicle.png

Going Forward

I'm already excited for LD45, but hope to make some minor changes to my workflow.

  • Newey GUI: I tried out a new architecture for managing frames in-game that I liked, so I might add some support to my base code for next event. Additionally, having some base code for GUI elements would also be nice.

  • No Double Dipping: Next time, only one hackathon per weekend, please.

Thanks for Reading!

Put your *amazing* drawing skills to use!

For my LD game, Sigillis, you draw what you want to do. Want to freeze enemies? Then draw it. It being a symbol. Fortunately for you, I made a nice and smooth pattern recognition algorithm, that will generally figure out the wonkiest of drawings.

Come play Keyboard Warrior (multiplayer)

Hey everybody! Making a multiplayer game within 48 hours felt like an achievement, but so far I only managed to play 2P matches, where the game should support way more. So I setup a discord for match-making, realizing how hard it is for jammers to encounter each other in my game.

Additionally you can also post me your game links in the server (there's a channel for that!) and I'll review these in priority!

Elevator Pitch: A Game About Wasting Your Life...

Screen Shot 2019-04-29 at 12.56.48 AM.png

Happy to have contributed original music, sfx and co-design for "Elevator Pitch, our entry for this year's LD44. Time to relieve all that built up tension by destroying the office!

Check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/elevator-pitch

About Elevator Pitch:

You are a disgruntled employee at large AAA game studio "Viral Videogames Inc". Everyday you spend countless hours wasting your life away in exchange for currency (without any overtime pay or benefits). You’ve been staying late nights and weekends crunching just to ship out the latest cash-grab games, all while Mr. CEO hides away in his ivory tower. Until one day, you just can’t take it anymore. Time to hitch a ride to the top floor and show "The Boss" who’s really boss.

Congrats to everyone !!

Thank you all for your great feedback

I've received a lot of love and valuable feedback for my Compo Entry Timezone (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/timezone). Thank you all, the LD Community is really great. We are great.

I want to respond to some of feedback and criticism in this post.

Some of you mentioned (@jjjjason, @vectrex28) that the hitboxes are a little bit too large. There is also a bug I discovered after submission, that if you stand with your back next to wall and shoot, the bullet gets destroyed immediately (because the launching hitboxes collides with the wall). This is definitely a bug and I will fix it later on.

Quite a lot of you (@baraa-marwan, @fm-studio, @borys, @jiri-hysek, @wildcard, @dodormeur, @khaoz-fang, @jeremy-ryan, @grllle, @jason-lothamer, @mika-la-grand, @adam-elaoud) complained about the hard difficulty (well, some of you just mentioned it so it isn't negative in its entirety). And yes, you're right, the game is hard, and that is intended. However if you find out a few mechanics it becomes a lot easier. What you have to know is, that each shoot costs you 5 seconds. Small life capsules give you back 5 seconds and large life capsules dropped by an enemy brings you 20 seconds (and to destroy an enemy it costs you 3 bullets = 15 seconds). Often you can skip enemies if you have gained enough time to progress in the level faster and start a fight again if you running out of time.

You can also lock the enemies position. For example it's much easier to defeat them if you're able to lock them near a wall.

I also wanted to add a weapon upgrade which enables you to destroy multiple enemies with one bullet, probably with a spread shoot or something, but ran out of time implementing it :-)

@amymist, @gamepopper and @fahim-faysal also mentioned the really rough start. You haven't enough time to destroy the first two enemies that occur, so you first have to collect some time capsules before fighting them. While there might be a better solution, I did that intentional. I wanted the player to learn that shooting costs "life". And this way he learns it the hard way, because everyone who stars playing just presses the fire button, then dies, then realizes "Ok, I have to be careful". Then when the first "time capsules" appears he should realize that he gains life/time - and then he HAS to fight the first enemies to gain even more so the timer doesn't reach zero. With this approach the player should learn the core gameplay loop. However, if for some reason he can't pass this test, your basically not able to progress in the game.

Balancing was also not that easy, and could probably improved a lot. The thing I really wanted the player to experience is that the clock is constantly ticking down bringing him often in situations where he can save himself the last second before the timer reaches zero by defeating an enemy and collecting his life capsule. This worked out quite well, judging by some youtube videos I already found. :-) And I wanted that the player has to make constant decisions if he has to go into a fight or if he has enough time left to skip that enemy.

@fahim-faysal, @dodormeur and @grllle mentioned the art that was inspired by Downwell. And, yes you're right. Indeed I had the mobile version opened next to me while I pixeled it and tried to recreate this minimalistic style. The idea was that because I suck at pixelart I would probably be able to create a consistent and nice looking game in this simple style. And I think especially on the sprite I took a little bit too much "inspiration". (I just want to note, that I did not copy it pixel by pixel, indeed the sprite of Downwell is much better than my version). But of course, you were all right, that the sprite was too close to the one in Downwell, so I've replaced the sprite now with something more unique. I hope you like it anyway and it fixes the issue.

Aside from that, I was overwhelmed by all the nice words especially on the music (which I had a ton of fun creating it, listen to it here: https://soundcloud.com/jochenheizmann/timezone-ludum-dare-44) and how fun and addictive the core game play loop is Thank you all: (Check out their games to, there are quite some gems over there):

Turning S.H.R.O.U.D into a real game?

corpse.png

Hello, it's us again!

After some discussion and after reading some feedback, we thought it could be a great idea to improve the game in the future. Mainly by removing the "selling body parts" mechanic (that, let's be honest, wasn't that great and was used just to fit the theme), and by turning it into a "losing body parts because of random events" mechanic.

We'd love to expand on the story, add some more events and fill a bit that wasteland by adding more maps and more locations.

There are also the "days" mechanic that was pretty much useless, and we could improve on that too.

So now we need your help. If you haven't played our game that what are you waiting? If you played it however, it'd be amazing if you could answer to this strawpoll with honest feedback. It will take you just a few seconds.

Time-lapse of the first day

Our little game 'Bob the Game' is out, so here is a first time-lapse how the art was created during the first day. We were able to do quite a lot during the first day, covering the most animations of the main character Bob and the NPCs.

You can see the first design attempts to first animations. NPC design and creation of walk, idle and death animations. As the background is used one track (out of four) you can also find in the background of our game.

Godot is fantastic

Just exported as HTML, worked out of the box, it took 5 minutes. I previously used libGDX, which uses GWT to deploy a Java game as JavaScript. It was sooo fragile and hard to get right, it usually took me at least 4 hours, and often another 4-8 hours before i had all quirks resolved (like my shaders not working, key inputs getting passed to the browser instead of the game, and so on). I love Godot :D

What were the hardest part for you?

Good morning!

Let me ask you a question: What were the hardest part for you in this jam?

For me, I think I made a game slidely bigger than I was able to (maybe an ok game for a 5 days jam?), so I had to run twice as fast to finish at the time and this was haard! In the end, I had to cut some stuff like the voice actions (the dialogues ended up having only the text).

But I'm pretty happy and proud with the results I got so far. What about you?

Learnings from LD44

Well for my part... LD 43 presented the fact that "oh please do a tutorial or at least some kind of help to the player."

This time around it's feedback on actions. Cleaning up combat systems aka polish on mechanics. Making something that the player doesn't really expect. Consider doing a thumbnail rather than just a screenshot from in-game. Hosting your own HTML build.... Nooooot that difficult and you get to track a bit on it  (more of a novelty than actually useful)

Feel free to come have a look at my entry - it is by NO means polished enough - but it seems it was much more enjoyable than my last entry. (Well actually only been hobby developing games for about a year and only got to spend around ~15 hours or so on it).

It's here:

Wonder if I'll rememeber doing all that stuff next time or I have to learn some of it again

Tracking - and yeah Tyskland is Danish for Germany that registered as most popular country

Lifelight - A game about a battle between Light and Darkness

Our (in our eyes) best game we've made so far! We're really proud about what we've achieved and we would be glad if you guys would take a quick look at our game <3

An extract of the story:
„Once upon a time in a world filled with darkness, monsters lived in peace and harmony. Until a creature of light was born. Tortured by the light emitted by the strange creature, the monsters began to attack to bring back the natural order of the world. Just as the first monster’s strike was set to end the gleaming light for good, the light began to transform into…“

Heyo!

Sigillis! It's a game! You draw things on the screen! The game deduces what the heck you drew, and then responds! It's great! It's like a tech demo, but better! It's so great, that I can't stop exclaiming!

You are invited to play this! The you can play the game on the web and then rate it on LD!

I truly appreciate your support, and have been loving all of your games thus far! Thank you to everyone for sharing their awesome creations with me, and I'm glad I could share mine!

Want to do this?

SpellQuest's weapons, enemies, and furniture are all completely physics based, and every collision deals damage to both you and enemies! This means that crushing an enemy with a bookshelf will kill them, and crushing a table with a bookshelf will rip the table apart. But make sure not to run too fast into the bookshelf, because that can kill you too.

If you want to wreck the room even more, you could cast a speed spell to fly around the room at double speed, cast a strength spell to be able to fling tables even farther, or cast a shield spell to do all of the above without taking any damage!

Constructive, detailed and critical

feedback.png

Send me a link to your game to receive honest criticism and suggestions to improve what you have.

Only do this if your intention is to continue the development. I'll review the game considering that.

I'll queue up to 10 games for now, and as soon as I finish those I'll make another post.

Some tips to improve your given feedback:

  • Playtime
  • Struggle with controls?
  • Intuitive or Instructions?
  • Did you finish or quit? At what point?
  • What is nice about it?
  • What they could improve?
  • What you don't like?

Be honest. Remember that most games are concepts, focus on the game's intention over execution.

Cheers!

HTML version and looking for games to play

captura 1.PNG So I've finally found the time to set up a "somewhat decent" game page as well as make an HTML version playable for itch.io Lifeline loot is a game in which you have to survive as much as you can while collecting money to keep you alive as you run away from debt collectors. Simple, right? How long can you hold?

Please try out the game and leave any comments if you feel, they are greatly appreciated. Didn't have much time to work this time but I think it somehow turned out to be something kind of playable. Also please link your games so I can download them and play them later.

Cheers!!!

Congratulations Everyone!

I've really enjoyed this Ludum Dare. It was my first, but definitely not my last!

I have learnt so much from participating, and I'm pretty proud of the game I made.

If you could play it and offer any feedback, I would be really grateful :)

It's playable in web browser (HTML5)

I've been playing as many games as I can. Some of them are just brilliant, especially for just 72 hours of dev time. But overall the talent out there is just staggering. I can't wait to get cracking on with more playing and voting this evening.

I will try to get around to writing up a postmortem post at some point too.

Minor post jam update!

If you felt the original version was too easy (BECAUSE YOU FARMED A SHIT TON OF BLOOD)

We added a hard version which relies more on skill and less than farming.

You can now enter the fights only with 1, 3 or 5 blood.

This means there's no point in getting anymore blood once you have enough for the final boss.

Ludum Dare 44 - Recap from a programmers perspective

cover-image-03.png

This is my second Ludum Dare. So I already knew what to expect and that three days is very short periode of time to create a game. But holy moly. This time we were realy close to miss an entry.

Last time I created a game togeather with two of my colleagues of the art department. So I was the single programmer on the project. It was close, but we managed to create a fun game in time. I work as professional developer and most of the time I use Unity. Therefore I usualy have a pretty good idea of how long it takes me to implement features. But this time I underestimated the effort it takes to create a playable game. Especially for a single programmer.

I teamed up with my girlfriend @ingo-holle who took over the art part of creating a game. We live in Germany so we stayed up till 3 am in the night on Friday to wait for the theme to be revealed. At 3 pm the next day we knew the kind of game we wanted to create: A little life simulation where every action the player chooses to perform pays its price in the from of lifetime.

We quickly had some ideas of how the game should look like and even better ideas for the type of actions the player is able to choose from. So I launched Unity and started to code the base of the game. By the time we went to bed there was not a single UI Element or graphic of any kind on the screen. But what's to worry about. Still two days left.

After an insufficient amount of sleep, I finished the game logic and started implementing the UI. I am a perfectionist so I wanted the UI to be responsive and mobile friendly. This might be good for professional work but not for a game jam. Takes to much time.

At 3 am I went to bed. Now I started to worry. Only one day left, a lot of work to do and my job would cost me 8 hours the next day. I was right to be worried. Even though I coded on the way to work and the whole evening and night it still was 2 am until I had my first build.

In the end I looked more like a zombie than a human being. But we managed to finish a playable version of our game in time. With less features than I hoped (random events would have improved the gameplay quite a bit) and less polishing but playable.

So. What are my learnings: - Take a day off from work. One realy needs all the the possible - For a game jam quick and dirty is allowed. Even though my developer heart bleeds. - Think in a smaller scope. I already knew that before. But this time again the gameplay was to complex to code in three days - Beeing the single developer includes not only coding the game logic but also implementing the UI and other stuff. This takes time! - Don't get stuck by the details. Choosing the gender of the character might be nice but is no game changer!

None the less I had a lot of fun participating in the 44th Ludum dare. See you in October and don't forget to play our game (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/whats-your-lifetime-value). Bye.
