Post Mortem - dRUNKEN nEIGHBOR - Find your own apartment.

Hello community!

I decided to join the Ludum Dare with the intention of prototyping an old idea, originally concepted for Global Game Jam and its theme Home. Yes, I decided to ignore the LD theme, but only because that idea was waiting to be prototyped for a long time (Actually I was hoping that the theme Limited Memory got seleted, that would be perfect!).

So the day came and I realized that the idea was simple enought for me to learn Twine, because was all about triggers and conditions, so I jumped in by myself with the quest of writing and coding. I'm a game artist but in this project I decided that art was my last concern.

In the game you are drunk and that was a really good choice that could explain how hard was to interact with the NPCs and also play with the character's memory. A good reason to make the player control a drunken character was the ridiculous context that some players may indentify themselves (I actually hope you don't).

Another concern was to avoid giving away the gender of the player and the "pretty face" NPC. By leaving non this kind of information vague, the player could fit his or her own idea of what a pretty face would be and wonder what was the reason you had his or her number written on the paper (maybe it was a invitation for a RPG session, who knows?).

From now on I want to develop more the NPC interactions, add art and sound to improve the mood and make a full prototype for maybe a adventure game made in 3D. Who knows?

### Thanks a lot for your time and if you want to know more about dRUNKEN nEIGHBOR just come in, take a seat a play it. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/drunken-neighbor Drunken Neighbor Copy - Mozilla Firefox.jpg

Mahou Shoujo Monster: Post Mortem

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/mahou-shoujo-monster-promised-fate 23038.png

Its funny 'cuz "Promised Fate" and "Post Mortem" are very nearly the same thing in this game ;)

Overall our team had a LOT of fun with our first game jam. We got to leverage parts of our in-house game engine to make parts of the game really quickly (especially art assets being contributed by a variety of artists with little need for time-heavy communication). People loved our escalation of tone, and we got great reviews on our music and art :) .

But we made some mistakes, too.

Feedback consistently talks about our confusing gameplay, and while we INTENDED for it to be a bit confusing and a puzzle, we clearly calibrating things wrong. If we'd had just a few more hours, it would have been good to have a better way to express "you do not KNOW how much this pact will cost you. Do you still want to risk it???". Maybe a better way to convey what pacts apply when as well, compared to just having it show up as a damage modifier. Plus, knowing the girls stats would make the damage feel less "random". Maybe a section in the recruiting cutscene listing the girls stats?

I do think we'll polish this up at some point after the jam (we're also working on the second Land in our steam game), so it'll be interesting to see what we focus on with less time pressure, and we expand past "oh god don't make it longer than five minutes or no one will have time to play" as a mentality.

If nothing else, we had another Magical Girl Mini game that was a lighter toned "Pretty Dress Up" kind of deal where you customize each magical girls outfit, and that might be neat to integrate in?

Though, come to think of it...that might be WAY too dark. Its one thing to have this purposefully no-emotional-depth Magical Girl turn into a blood smear, but I think it would be WAY worse if you'd raised her up and gotten her the perfect outfit to max out her stats.

Welcome to The Branch

Cover test.png

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/the-branch

The Branch is a ‘slice of life’ documentary looking at the staff who work at the local high street bank.

In tonight’s first episode we meet branch manager - Clinton Meeks. Clinton’s obsession with currency is preventing him from ever loaning the bank’s money to anybody! In charge of the Bureau de Change is xenophobe - Mildred Pew. An elderly woman who’s only interested in the GBP and wants to get rid of all other currency. Then finally there’s body builder, branch security and delivery driver - Derek Armageddon, who’s suffered a severe spinal injury since using the vault as his personal gym. For these 3 people - currency is their life.

Tune in now!

The Branch is a simple narrative driven experience. Meet the characters and play out their day to day activities. There is no winning or losing, just doing. Have fun!

If you’ve played our other Ludum Dare entries then you’ll know what to expect, questionable gameplay, questionable voiceovers, and stupid humour. We hope you like it!

To begin with, I created a sketch of how many stages of growth we will have. VdUGsExyqZI.jpg There are 2 frames to make, then the growth is quite fast and inconspicuous. Therefore, set the frame in 4 frames.

Then I drew in the vector the simplest model for the programmer, with which he can already work. Plants.png

A huge thank you to everyone for reviewing my game. This ludum dare was a wild ride from start to finish. For the first time I stayed up all night to finish the game. Now that I've had some time to distance myself from the game (and got some sleep), I think I'm finally ready to write down my thoughts that went into creating the game. I'll be posting a postmortem soon here and on r/gamedev.

Game Difficulty or feature? WebGL Build up!

There's this fine line I walked during development on whether the game was too unforgiving/difficult. I knew all the right answers so finding the balance was a guessing game without feedback. After some feedback I adjusted the amount of soul credits you lose for wrong choices in the WebGL build! The windows and mac downloads are unchanged. Yes, the decision for whether a person should go to heaven or hell is arbitrary! Almost all of them were made at 2am! Thanks for all the feedback so far! I definitely see making small changes to this to make the overall experience better! Check it out here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/your-life-my-currency

Derpiness slider

So I finally decided to do an addition to my generic face animation script that I use on every single game jam game. I've had this addition in mind for quite some while now but never really sacrificed the time to do it during an actual jam.

The addition is what I call derpiness variable for blinking and it adds a slight randomized delay to each eye blink timing.

Postmortem and playthrough of our game "Lousy Life Lessons - [LLL]"

Since this time we focused more on story than usual, we made a playthrough video for the folks who aren't that much into 2D Platformers.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wesBcsyUas

Postmortem: It was the first time we made a platformer in Unity and because of weird physics behaviour, we decided to code the movement and collision of the platformer with a simple raycast system. This turned out to be a little bit more complicated than we thought and a few bugs crept into the game.

Sadly the animations are are bit buggy sometimes and the backgrounds for 2 levels are missing but apart from that, we managed it to finish the game in time.

We decided to make a postjam version of the game, with all bugs fixed and all assets placed. We will upload it as soon as it's ready.

Quick patch made on Heartaker

I hope you are all doing great!

I have pretty exciting news; but first of all, let me thanks every single one who gave me feedback about the game!

I received a lot of critics on dialogue speed, not being able to restart the game and resurrection price in the game. Lucky, every single change is this patch is basically a few digits changed in values of the game, like speed and price.

FINALGIF.gif

Either way, here's the quick patch note:

  • Gameover screen is faster.
  • Upgrades are cheaper.
  • Shopkeeper's dialogue is faster.
  • Spawn time is faster.
  • You can restart the game.
  • Enemies reset attack timer after dash encounter.
  • Camera correctly looks at the player if he falls from the map.
  • Game starts in fullscreen.
  • Samurai's icon should look sharper.

You can play Heartaker and give me more suggestions right here!~

Thank ya!

Would you test our game?

SHIP-WRE-KT Art

Hi all. After hibernating and recovering from the weekend, I thought I'd share a little process art stuff. For many of us, this was our first point and click adventure game, and we also had several artists trying to align to a single style, so there was a lot of visual planning to get to our final result. Please give us a play so we can get enough votes to receive a rating, thank you!

After coming up with the idea of a robot with draining battery life (and then the plot that he finds another robot that he needs to power), we explored those characters, which allowed one artist to get started on that.

characters.jpg

Then we spent a lot of time planning the levels. Here are some quick wireframes to validate the concept, defining some of the interactions and asking ourselves, well, would this be fun?

wires.jpg

The next day, a couple of us fleshed out a game flow, using a wall and lots of post-its. This gave us all our points of interaction, the level and object design needed to accomplish that, logic for the battery draining, and all the points of dialogue. This mess was translated into two digital bulleted lits: for all the dialogue, and to define MVP functionality (which of course was still way too big, haha, lesson for next time).

IMGem20190501/em121130.jpg

Then we did a moodboard of other games and ideas that inspired us; we found games with a pixel density we liked, some drab color examples, and researched old operating system design. This allowed us to divide and conquer for the next two days, between the map and object art, characters, cut-scenes, logo, and UI.

Here is what we ended up with!

Cat Animation 101 - a little series - Part One

get started!

gattocamminagif.gif

They main challenge I faced for this Ludum Dare was animating Zoltan's cats. You see cats doing all the things cat do and I wanted them to look as real as possible. I've never done anything like this before and I'm so happy I did!

I'm a programmer, but the two Ludum Dare I've done so far I decided to challenge me with graphics: I wasn't even sure this could be done properly in such a short time. So here is are a little series on my process, for those of you that would like to start making their own graphics.

This is not the right way or the only way to do it, but it worked! I was able to draw quickly with a good tradeoff between speed and quality.

You can find any kind of stock animation around, but making your own graphics is so satisfying and makes your game unique. So here is how you can do. Of course basic drawing skills are needed but not so crucial in my opinion, because even the strangest wobbly traced character will work well if it's animated right.

First of all if you are serious about animation, grab this book.

immaginipostanimazione_01.gif

It is the bible, you won't probably need anything else. There are also great videos of it you can find on YouTube. The first and most important move you want to animate is walk. Turns out that walk cycles will be also the most difficult animation you will make, so start with it and everything will be easier after :) Bipeds walks are different from 4 leg walks, but they all have the so called "contact positions" that is when each foot touches the ground. A good way to start is to draw the contact position for each foot and then draw the position between the two, called "passing position". The more frames you add the smoother your animation will be. An easy way to do this is getting an already made sprite sheet and studying it.

Trace on it! There's nothing wrong. This way you'll get familiar with the movement you are drawing.

For Zoltan I picked an old picture of animation studies that shows a rotoscope of cats and dogs jumping. In the early days of animation they would film everything to study the movements this way. And this is what you can do, even with a YouTube video.

Thanks for reading this and I really hope that if there's an animator in you it will come out for a future jam! ;)

Coming up next: my first tries with cats!

Proceeded without thinking

Check out our LudumDare entry :D

So, LudumDare44 was our second LudumDare jam and third jam generally. Perhaps some of you remember our previous entry Drunken Soviet :D!

This time we had a real blast with development as the theme really resonated well with us. In fact, we spent the last few days nearly without sleep constantly working on implementing features and tweaking things. In the end the game we ended up with might not be the most complete product but it’s at the very least playable.

We really liked the idea however and are even considering working on a full version with much more involved and complex mechanics. :)

Cheers!

Now built for Linux & MacOS!

I've had some great feedback from people but a few where unable to play since I had only built for Windows. The game is made using FNA (which I've grown to love quite a bit) and I've never built for anything other than Windows. So down the rabbit hole we go.

Luckily there was a pretty handy guide on doing exactly that on the FNA page. Some different files where needed and configs configured but I got it together and I was able to test the Linux version using VirtualBox. Somewhat to my surprise it worked on first try! There is always some issue when trying to get this kind of stuff going, especially in a VM.

So now all you Linuxers & Macers (?) can try it out too!

How to resum the party

Imagine it, you go to the bar with your friends, you buy a beer, some time passes, the party begins to be boring, what to do to save it?

It is the perfect moment to take out the phone and start Bet Your Life and start the party again. It is a simple party game like Russian roulette, which we created on this Ludum Dare. First, see the teaser we've been exploring and then play while having fun, leave reviews and judge.

Programmer Art

Being a coder creating art for my prototypes has always been difficult, so many ideas I ended up discarding because I knew I couldn't create art decent enough if I couldn't find anyone to help. So I've been practicing for a while now and wanted to challenge myself in this Jam. I'm happy with the result but I'm so slow that I couldn't finish in time for the Compo and I submitted for the Jam. The game is missing a few crucial things that would make the story easier to understand, as well as a few planned extra enemies and a lot of polishing, but I'll be happy if you all can try it. samuraiemforest.gif samurai/emduel.gif

The postmortem is here (Warning: super long)

Ludum dare has just ended and wow, as a second time participant, things went nowhere near as smoothly as I hoped. Here's what I've learned by going through that grueling journey:

  1. Sh*t happens. If I had to describe this year's ludum dare in a nutshell, that's how I would describe it. The artist I was working with had to leave on the same day due to RL issues. That left me with with a very small amount of usable assets and not enough time to look for premade ones. I had to somehow work with that. Then My university decided to randomly hold classes on the last day of ludum dare. Then, as if that wasn't enough, They announced that my yearly result would come out on the day before. I spent the second day frantically refreshing the results page to get some peace of mind so that I could work on the game. Naturally, progress came to a halt. Which brings me to my second point.

  2. Don't give up before the end. I almost did. My motivation was already running low with all the issues I was having outside of the game. 12 hours before the submission I realized that I might not make it even if I crunched all night. I closed unity and basically gave up. I procrastinated for two hours playing Sekiro. Weirdly, beating one of the bosses I was stuck on for a while gave me the motivation to retry. Then, I somehow submitted the game less than an hour remaining.

  3. Cut your scope again and again. Don't bother with extra features that you don't have time for. In my experience, UI falls in this category. I spent the majority of the second day implementing the UI for an upgrade menu before deciding to replace it with a more simple one. I didn't even bother with a title menu since the game is not very replayable. I think the game is better for it. But this will vary from game to game.

  4. Don't be overly worried about clean code. One of the reasons the upgrade menu was taking too long was because I was trying to code everything the clean way. I threw away all of it for a more simplified upgrade system that directly modified the variables in the code. And I just copypasted the same code for all the powerups. It took me just a couple of hours and I never had to look at that piece of code again. Plus, when you do something the wrong way, you have a better understanding about what the better approach might be.

  5. Making an actual playable build is important because you'll probably mess up your first time. I said this last year as well. This time I decided to do a webgl build. I didn't know that itch.io requires you to upload a ZIP file, not a rar. It's a simple mistake but I was stuck on it for an hour. I don't think I'll ever repeat it now. So fail fast and make those mistakes early.

  6. Do not be complacent with your progress early on. The first day went really fast for me and I had a lot of things done. But that's only because I was doing the simple things then But progress was slow afterwards and I almost ended up missing the deadline.

  7. Know your toolset. I lost a lot of time integrating an external pathfinding library. I also wasted a lot of time writing a save manager (which didn't even make it in the game). Pathfinding and serialization is one most common things you need in games. Learn them before hand so that you don't have to waste time.

  8. The theme will always suck. Don't avoid participating on the jam because you didn't like the theme or some other external reasons. I skipped ludum dare for a year making various other excuses. What matters is not the theme but how you approach and design based on it. I don't think my take on the theme was particularly unique, but it is still MY interpretation and all the weirdness that it entails.

  9. Accept that you'll never be able to do justice to your ideas. There were a lot of things I wanted to implement but I didn't have the time for.

  10. Polish your game- I was going say this but I should really practice what I preach. Unlike last time, I didn't have time to polish the game and it really shows. The main thing I realized from playing other people's games was that theirs was much more polished. In a sea of games, polish is what will separate your game from the rest. Obligatory link to THAT video

  11. And last but not least, don't beat yourself up by comparing to others. There will always be people who have accomplished much more impressive things in three days compared to you. But know that they still had to reach that point by trying and failing again and again. Your first game jam is unlikely to be that great but over time you will learn and improve. But I'll admit that I still don't understand how people can make such amazing games on the 48h compo.

Overall, this ludum dare has been an enlightening experience for me. I hope you guys enjoyed these past few days as much as I did.

Fix Update in "Danko".

Danko is finished.

win.png

Our game was made in 72 hours, and we didn’t want to touch it during the Rating and fix something that didn’t work. It seemed to us dishonest, because there are 72 hours for which we must do this. But, as we noted, this is a common practice, and there is nothing to worry about. Therefore, we also fixed a few small things that our players encountered. This is the first and last update.

Fix Update v.0.01 + Fixed bug with altar openning + Fixed bug with pause button + Fixed bug with damage hero + Fixed bug with lights in webgl version + Fixed bug with sound of skeletons + Fixed bug with colliders

Thank you for your support and kind words, we are very glad that there have appeared people who liked the game. Our team wonders whether to do something from this, something completed or not. But we will definitely make a post-ludum version, where we will add everything that we did not have time for 72 hours. Good luck.

STR!PES

For an unknown reason, a hacker has decided to destroy my leaderboard online. So for a while it was not reachable. It’s a pity. I fixed it today, ~~but all previous scores have been lost~~. Thank you for your comprehension. Also I would like to promote this cool project, offering for the best five players a free key of my previous game which is available on Steam - Theorem. This contest runs until LD results. Try if you dare :)

20 days?

Are there really 20 days to play and rate games? This is my first jam, I didn't realize we'd have so long. I guess it makes sense considering the sheer number of games.

Also, I was wondering what the deal is with hosted content? I assume we're not supposed to update anything after the deadline, but how is that getting monitored? It doesn't really seem possible, for instance, to know if someone has updated their itch.io hosted content.

I'm making a video where I play your games

Platform Pain

So this is my first Ludum Dare in 4 years and this is also the first time I'm not on a PC. I'm trying to play and rate on my MacBook and everything is Windows only. I finally feel the pain of Linux users!

The website has had a large makeover in my absense, but there still doesn't seem to be a way to sort games by platform availability?
