Filter LD Entries - Part 2

You know this problem where you want to rate some games, but the ones LD suggests for you are mostly the wrong genre and/or for the wrong platform?

I have updated the LudumData filtering tool: http://ludumdata.openfu.com/event/LD44

You can now both filter by platform and also search for keywords. The order of entries is randomized every few minutes to give everyone a fair shake (synchronizing with the Coolness score on the LDJAM site takes too long and is too cumbersome right now).

Sadly, there is no data available to enable users to search for a specific genre, but at least you can use keyword search to select for certain things.

Lastly, a shameless plug: if you're looking for a dungeon puzzler (yes, I made that category up), check out my game, Dungeon Buddies: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/dungeon-buddies

Life path

Just a reminder that my game exists :) You gotta pimp your game hard to get people to play your game. I am not sure how the LD algorithm works or if very few people are still playing and rating. I've been blown away by your reactions to my game tho :) I can't complain about anything at all this LD.

One Coin, two faces, and a crowd of evil rich dudes

ffd_preview.png

Hey!

Face for Death is a 2D runner platformer videogame developed for the April 2019 Lumdum Jam, in where you play a double faced coin and you have to scape from a city plenty of evil rich dudes.

We keep working on a modular level generation protoype and some of the mood we want to give it, so maybe last version is not so playable like first. Anyway, we can see some of core mechanics working OK now and how would be scaled the game.

Havent played yet? Come and enjoy, but dont forget rate it!

An infernal hatch for you

Would you like an infernal hatch to drag everything you want to hell? Here you are!

You can use this sprite if you like.

yourTommyflowerInfernalHatch.png

### In Zoltan's city cats can be fall into one of these at any time.

pescagatti.gif

But how do you design a hatch like this?

animatedhatch.gif

First thing I did was defining the hatch shape and making the flashing effect.

If you are familiar with old style games, you can see a lot of this effect in explosions. Basically an explosion always starts with a flash of light, and the simplest flash of light is obtained by alternating black and white. In this case I added red because I wanted a more colored and fire-like effect.

Then I decided to add some infernal red smoke. I used a cloud shaped brush in Photoshop and I started with red. I made a burst in the center of my hatch incrementing the red with any frame. Next I added orange and finally some yellow. Note that the brush became smaller with every colour.

Then I added some infernal light coming out of the hatch. I did this on the stitched spritesheet. I used a soft brush to trace rays and the adjusted the opacity to make the light stronger as the hatch opens.

Also I made sure to cut my light so that it stayed inside the frame of the hatch.

But I wasn't happy with it, so I added some random sparks. The position of these doesn't really care since they move random.

I created the hatch separately from the cat falling down, because in Zoltan, we can have cats of any colour. So the final animation is made of two sprites one over the other. I had to make sure to cut the cat so that it looked like it was inside the hatch in the very last frame.

Question -> Can i update the source files of my compo entry ? (Not the game)

So some fiends of mine where interested inn the source files for my LD44 submission but some found it confusing/hard to read. This made me think about other people who might be interested, they might also be struggling with my code. i want to clean it up for read ability sake. So the question is can i update the source(not the delivered GAME), or would i break some rules by doing so? I cant find a rule against this so just to be safe i want to ask :frog:

I've put some good amount of work into it, hoping for feedback! Thanks and a good day :)

Hello ! Send me your games :)

Please fell free to share me your games or games you really like in this awesome jam  I really like mood games, walking simulators, games with a deep history and ones that are relaxing.

Also, here is my game if you want to check it out : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/real-time enterportal

Thanks

Fun fact...

As a small tradition, each of my Ludum Dare entries contains a reference to my previous entry. For my LD44 entry, 15 Minutes to Live, I included Joe, the protagonist of my LD43 entry The Gods Are Angry, as an NPC. (It's obviously not the same Joe, because - spoiler alert - he yeets himself into a volcano at the end of The Gods Are Angry.)

comparison.png

But 15 Minutes to Live also includes a reference to the game I'm currently working on. Give it a play and see if you can guess who or what it might be...

Can't wait for the results!

I know we still have 12 days of voting, but I just get too excited!

We are developing our Jam into a full game!

Hi everyone! I'm part of a team of two (@Greon) very passionate developers, and we're happy to announce that we are working on our entry to Ludum Dare 44 Jam towards a full game! It's called Death Got Your Girlfriend, and you can check our updates on Twitter:

Thank you for everyone that is playing our (very rushed) LD44 Jam entry and giving us feedback. We are using your comments and lack of time restrictions post-Ludum to develop it into a better, more fun, and complete game. We sincerely didn't think it would be such an amazing journey to participate in Ludum Dare, and we're learning a lot, and having a lot of fun.

"The money Hole" and "The debt" Post-Mortem

This Post-Mortem was overdue so let's do it.
I participated in this 44th Ludum Dare with my teammate and sister, mirialena. The theme was "your life is currency"

# Day 1

We spent our first hour reflecting on what we could do with this theme.
We knew we wanted to make a 2D game.
We had two ideas at first:
-First was to make a platformer game about a girl who owed money to mafia guys
-Second was to make a game where you had a certain time to live and could work to gain lifetime, but working was making you old and if you reached a certain age, you'd die.

We chose the first idea because, to us, it was easier to make it.
First we wanted to use Unity 2019.1 to make it but we quickly discovered every scripts I made didn't work with it, so we decided to not waste time figuring out what was wrong with it and use Gamemaker studio 2 Trial edition instead.

With that in mind, mirialena and I began to make the charset for the main character and the first drafts of the ennemies. During this first day, we also used the drag and drop to have the player and the ennemies move since neither of us knew C++ much. We also decided goal of the character would be to go to work safely. characterLDjam.png

Day 2

During the second day, mirialena made the art for the platforms and the charset for the enemies.
She also made a first draft for our background. She also made the gameover screen.
What I did on this second day was the health/money/debt things. The idea was that everytime the character lost health, it lost a bit of debt too, but I never got that to work.
I also had the enemies inflicting damages to the character. I also made the main menu screen and buttons.
menu.png

Day 3

The third day, mirialena finished the final version of our background. (we only had one level due to this version of gamemaker studio 2 having so many restriction, and the number of maps was one.)
wall.png She also made the credits image. I finished the menu, the character inflicting damages to the enemies, the dialogues and the replay button. All that was left was to add the music and to have this losing health=losing debt mechanism.

That was the moment I checked how to upload our game. And that we discovered one crucial detail we ignored: you can't do that with the trial version of gamemaker studio 2.

We discussed details and decided we didn't wanted to abandon but with 12 hours left there wouldn't be much we would be able to do.
We chosed to have a fresh start with a new idea: a cursed wallet that transformed life into money then if the character lost that money, it would lose health.
We also decided to use Rpgmaker MV for this new game since it's really easy to use and it comes with native assets and menus.
I made 70% of the maps (the main path from the village to the witch's home). mirialena made all the maps that aren't on the main path and the credit map.
I also wrote all the dialogues, made all the events (rpgmaker's native programming), chosed the music, made some enemy group, nerfed the enemies, made the wallet and money as items and made the wallet curse into an existing condition, I also had to translate all terms in english since our version of rpgmaker isn't in english.

conclusion

What did work

-Main character of both game.
-Enemies of both game.
-Maps of both games
-Battle of second game

What didn't worked
-Unity 2019
-Battle of first game due to the whole losing health=losing debt that didn't worked
-Some messages weren't translated
-some tiles were bugged
-transitions were bugged

Also you can play our game here

Let's play some games!

I want to play more of your games! We still have just under 2 weeks to go before the results so we have plenty of playtesting sessions left in us. I'm making my way through the list but if you get around to rating mine then I'll be sure to give your game a go in return! My game, The Poor Rebellion, is reaction based and all about turning peasants into nobles, only to tax the money back off them! BamGif10.gif

SPENDOTRON: 2019 - Now Locked at 1080p

I had the game scaling up to match the screen size, but that was causing it to be harder on small monitors and easier on large monitors. So now I've just went ahead and locked the canvas size to 1080p so it's a standardized playing experience! I also figured out how to embed it on itch and run it automatically. Feels good.

Invertebrae: a Pre-Mortem

I want to save my post-mortem until after the judging period is done, so until then let's pre-mortem! I think the majority call these "dev-diaries" but pre-mortem is obviously a much cooler term.

Formulation

Getting the ball rolling.

Like all games, it started with a notebook and various existing chat threads. A lot of my IRL friends are at least vaguely interested in game development (some of them even participating in past Ludum Dares!) so it's incredibly valuable to bounce ideas back and forth.

I've wanted to make a terminal-esque game since at least LD42, so I went into this expecting to force whatever theme won into my game, rather than the other way around. "Your life is currency" was a little tricky until I figured I could stretch the meaning of "currency" to expand to "current-ness", which is really just a long-winded way of saying "now". That's what I'll do: a narrative game set in a terminal that plays with the idea of "now". I'll also put money in the story or something to make the connection a bit more concrete--there's a bit more to it than that, but I hadn't quite formulated it yet.

As to what the heck "invertebrae" even means...it's a cooler, less correct way of saying "invertebrate". And "invertebrate", while having a specific scientific meaning, could also be literally translated as "spineless", which is how I'm choosing to interpret it with regards to the game's themes.

Inspiration

For story inspiration, I looked towards one of my favorite visual novel series, Zero Escape. In particular, I was most focused on the second in the series, Virtue's Last Reward; without spoiling too much, it also has a focus on getting information between multiple in-game timelines. I didn't really want the plot of my game to revolve directly around time-travel, but the idea of being able to use information gained from "bad ends" stuck.

In terms of aesthetics, I can't for the life of me find the original picture, but a while back on Twitter I saw someone post their custom Linux desktop setup and was absolutely enamored with it. As you can probably guess, their terminal was a deep blue-black with golden-yellow text.

Implementation

While making an actual terminal game would have been neato, it was imperative that my game could run in the browser this time around. And with my day job being a front-end React developer, it really only made sense to just build it with React. Plus, this gave me an occasion to make a full=fledged project with the recently released React Hooks, which if you haven't heard are essentially a monadic-ish effect system for React components (hopefully that cleared things right up).

It also meant that I got to take advantage of some of the great tooling in the React ecosystem, such as react-dnd. This made the drag-and-drop feature mostly straightforward to implement, although funnily enough react-dnd has some problems cooperating with the React Hooks syetem, so there was some time spent trying to get the two to make peace.

Initial GIF of the engine.

One cool thing I like about how the game is built is that the "engine" is mostly separate from the story. As many people found out, the entirety of the story is actually within a singular JSON file that the game engine loads at runtime. Theoretically, if you like the mechanics in my game but were meh on the story content (don't worry it's fine), you could actually clone my repo, edit the story.json file with your marvelous creation, and boom you have Twine but with drag-and-drop!

Music

I learned from my last two Ludum Dare games that music honestly might as well be mandatory (and my first game even had music, albeit mixed too quietly for anyone to hear). As fun as the game is, playing something with absolute silence in the background is just never going to be an optimal experience. And even if you don't have a musical bone in your ear, there's so much free software these days that's so immediately approachable. Plus, the circle has swung back around and minimalism is cool again, so you can totally get away with arpeggiating a chord into infinity.

Groovebox how I love thee.

For the music here, I used Groovebox, a really fun synth-sequencer program for iOS. If you have an iWhatever, stop reading and download it right now--it's free!! I spend so many bus rides now just making short little loops. And much like gamedev, while 99.9% of games don't quite hit the mark, the 0.1% that do make it all worth the while.

Before I leave you...

Can't unsee.

During the compo, my sister pointed out that the font I chose kind of looked like a cleaned-up Comic Sans. Whoops.

Some of my top picks so far - LD44

Hey folks! As we're passing the midway point for rating time, I've decided to compile some of my favorites among games I've seen this event. It's by no means comprehensive, as I've only played 30 games of the 2537 games this event. However, I think every title on this list deserves its spot, and I'll expect to see some of these games high up in the rankings come results day.

Without further ado, here are my favorite games so far, per category:

Fun

tz.png

Timezone by @joemanaco (COMPO)

This fast-paced platformer is just an excellent game to play. You're forced to continuously kill enemies in order to survive, and the level design, visuals, and music are all excellent. There are only three levels, but they're each fairly long and difficult, so the full experience is really rewarding.

Innovation

dd.png

Demonic Dealings by @paul-nadan (COMPO)

Is it poker? Is it guitar hero? Is it Pokemon? This think-quick playing-card-collection battle game mashes up a number of elements from different games into a surprisingly cohesive game jam experience. After the devil beats you in a hand of cards, your character is forced to gamble for the souls of others to repay his debt.

Theme

puca.png

Pucamuc by @mors (JAM)

You play as a lopsided pink rectangle who crushes the life out of children in this punishing puzzle-platformer. Need to jump extra high? The cost is your own blood. It's a solid interpretation of the theme, in addition to having charming graphics and music.

Graphics

7cd.png

The 7 Cents Deal by @probe31 (JAM)

In this game, you play as a Catshier, giving change to the feline customers who frequent your shop. The game plays like a traditional cashier simulator with a twist, but the illustrations and animations have an incredible amount of scope and polish for a jam game.

lll.png

Lousy Life Lessons by @awesomealliterationalliance (JAM)

Because the choice was so difficult, I included two games in my list for graphics. Lousy Life Lessons puts the player in the shoes of a cat stunt double, who slowly spends his nine lives in a series of increasingly dangerous stunt acts. The game integrates comic-esque illustrations and a voice-over narrative seamlessly into an action platformer where you have to always land on your feet.

Audio

zw.png

Zugzwang by @riv-roy (JAM)

Looking at my graded games, I was a little surprised to see this at the top of my Audio list, because the game is so memorable for other reasons. It effectively plays like chess, from some alternate reality. You have five pieces with specific movement, and you get points when they die that you can use to cast special abilities to gain an advantage. In addition, the SFX are great and the music is haunting.

Honorable mentions for my audio spot include the aforementioned Timezone and Lousy Life Lessons.

Humor

crnc.png

Collecting Really Nice Cats! by @cheesepencil (COMPO)

You play as a disgruntled aging woman named Gertrude in this semi-physics-based cat lobbing simulator. You are tasked with literally herding cats while also avoiding young lads with baseball caps. The audio pushes it over the allegorical cliff of absurdity, and the combination of various cat noises, grunting, and voice acting makes it an overall great experience.

Mood

10g4.png

The Tenth Item in G4 by @daniel-alhadeff (COMPO)

This is probably the best game I've ever played featuring a sentient bag of raisins.

Conclusion

Not featured on this list, but still quite noteworthy, is utsvulten by @ditto. It doesn't fit nicely into any of the other categories because... uh... you just have to play it for yourself.

Also, all the jam games I've mentioned above definitely have multiple creators, although I've only linked the one that appears on the rating review page! Make sure to apply due credit when tossing the names and links of these great games around.

Changes

tree_10.png * Added more props * Added understandable end of the game * Added more sounds (steps, doors, interacts) * Updated monologues (timings, text, UI) * Fixed bugs in art (animation, UI, shadows) * Fixed colliders

Voice acting update

We remade "radio effect" from Audacity to Unity Audio Mixer. It allowed making nice lerp from direct speech in bunker to radio speech outside.

audiomixer.png

On this jam I tried to use the (Stem). It's asset for the normal organization of sounds. And it was useful decision. It saved me 3-4h on the jam.

Audio mixer way decreased number of voice records, but another problem appeared. For now I still have two the same sound banks for each character. One for bunker output, one for radio output. But lerp from direct speech to radio worth it. SoundBank.png

TTNSNW VR dev log (not for ld)

Analytics The alpha demo was released yesterday. 77 people sign up for the demo, 17 of those people sent the wrong email, so they won't be able to access it. So far, 27 people have accepted the invitation, 14 of those people have installed the game, and roughly 12 of those people have actually tried the game. 3 people have completed the feedback form. Keep in mind it's only 7:30 on Friday, right after the alpha was released. So more feedback will be given soon, hopefully.

Impressions From what I've read on the feedback forms as well as users on discord, the game is enjoyable, but feels like a prototype. That's understandable given that not a ton of content is available in the alpha, and the average play time to finish the demo is about 15 minutes. Almost all users agree that the clipping issues need immediate attention, as well as your body getting stuck in the ground. Enemies aren't very interesting to deal with, and players are often killed when shot from behind.

What needs to be done - Technical The primary focus has to be *the big three. Clipping through objects, getting your body stuck in things, and climber wonking out when it's not sure what to do. Performance isn't perfect, but meets requirements to be released on the oculus store. Continued effort must be put in to maintain current performance.

What needs to be done - Design Mixed feedback is being recieved on the design of the game. Many players are unsatisfied with the AI, but creating an AI that behaves interestingly is frankly too big of a challenge for me, especially on top of all the VR nonesense. To compensate, levels will need to be redesigned so that the game's strengths are emphasised. Meaning less focus on killing enemies, and more focus on climbing and coming up with unique ways to approach situations. Levels may become more linear, but with more interesting scenarios within them.

Root Maker has just been updated!

Hey fellow devs and LD enthusiasts!

The Root Maker team has been hard at work over the last few days fixing some small bugs and quality of life issues with the game. We've made a lot of good progress, and are happy with how Root Maker turned out - definitely some other improvements we would want to make if we could do it again, but we were pretty happy with the results since this was our first jam as a team. If you haven't played it yet, we'd love for you to check Root Maker out here!. Feedback is much appreciated.

We're looking forward to having some more time to continue playing and rating other games this weekend. It's been a cool experience seeing some of the awesome stuff you all have made, and it's definitely been inspiring (and humbling!) to see what some of you came up with over the LD weekend. We're excited to keep getting to see the other games we haven't gotten a chance to play yet!

The Origin of Squishies - Part 1 - Brainstorming & Art

Header.jpg

Squishies contains quite some things I never tried before! It was an interesting compo for me so I decided to document the process.

The theme and brainstorming!

For me the theme was announced at 3 AM. I woke up at 7 AM, full of energy to start!

"Your life is currency". Hmmm... what to make with that? Like last Ludum Dare, I found the theme quite hard. I don't mind though, it forces me to think of completely new game concepts. I don't want to make just any type of game though... As usual, next to the theme, I had some restrictions of my own:

  • I wanted to make the main characters really cute. I never made a game with cute characters before and it sounded like a fun challenge.
  • I didn't want to work with Health Points (HP) or any other kind of number. It might feel like a strange restriction, but I didn't want the player to constantly have to look at the HP bar to play the game. I wanted him to look at the actual gameplay, levels and graphics, whatever those would become. In general I simply like to avoid UI in games whenever possible.

Cute characters is still ok as a restriction. Not having any kind of life points is a lot harder with a theme like "your life is currency". Uh...

I started brainstorming.

One of the first ideas that came to minds was: "You are a bunch of cute characters with abilities". Cute, check. Each character could only use the ability once and "died" after that? Theme, check. No HP bar, check. You just need enough cute characters for the player to use, really.

But what would the gameplay be? The above idea did not really limit gameplay options. It could still become almost anything. It could be some kind of "war game" where you have two camps? On the paper I used for brainstorming I had "Tower Defense", "protection mechanisms" but also "shape-shifting eggs" written down. I was thinking of some kind of civilization of "blobs" where the player would be a god. I thought of "infinite runner" with a whole bunch of cute characters. Anyway, as crazy as it sounds I actually liked the idea with the "shape-shifting eggs". Maybe they could transform into a gaint fluffy block which you can use to continue in the level? With those blocks, the game could become a nice "puzzle platformer game".

I decided to go with that idea.

Having a puzzle platformer with a lot of cute characters would be hard though. How to control them? You cannot control all of them with the keyboard. Maybe I could just select a bunch and point them where to go? That would mean they would need platformer pathfinding and some AI which could jump those platforms... I don't think I have ever seen something like that before. It could be something fun to try though.

Below some quick scribbles during brainstorming... In the beginning the squishies had feet! Also, in the image below the shape-shifting "eggs" became square! There is also the word "hopping" as an idea for movement and a big "Squishy". BlobShapes2_downscaled2.jpg

I was also thinking of making it physics based. It could be fun to see the characters tumble over each other. That would make the AI part even harder though...

Time to upgrade Unity?

It is 8:30 AM now and I just started my computer. I wasn't very well prepared for this Ludum Dare. I had been thinking of streaming the development but I did not prepare that. Instead I downloaded some simple screen recording software "Chronolapse" which I had seen somewhere on this site. I also wanted to try out the new Shader Graph in Unity so I started downloading the new version.

Downloading the new version of Unity during the jam was not a very smart decision. It also did not help that my hard drive was full. I ended up not being able to use it at all because it gave some strange error message when starting up. Luckily, I still had Unity 2018.3 installed so I used that one, but I definitely lost some valuable time. Hmmm...

screen_1556348451.46.jpg

Art!

While Unity was still downloading I wanted to start with the art (9 AM now). First, I spent around 40 minutes looking for references (work of other artists) on the internet and deciding on a color palette. I am using a tool to keep those reference images on the screen called Kuadro Beta (0.8.5) and to draw I am using a wacom bamboo mte-450a pen tablet (so an old model, but it still works).

After that I opened Krita (2.8) and starting painting. The whole process you see below took a bit more than an hour.

ArtBuilding.gif

New Unity Project & Time to upgrade Krita?

Still using the older version of Unity, I started importing the "blob" into Unity (11 AM). I wanted to import all layer groups from Krita separately so I had more control. However, apparently my version of Krita was too old and it did not support exporting all layer groups separately. I could export all layers manually, but if I wanted to draw other things I would have to do that for those as well. So, of course I started upgrading Krita... I don't learn, do I? This upgrade ended up going well though...

I wanted to make the blobs a bit ... err ... squishy. I thought it could be fun to have them stretch and get squished together on impact.

To be continued...

Since this post is already getting long and I didn't even start with the squishiness, hair simulation, path finding and AI, I will split up the "origin story of Squishies" in a couple of posts. Stay tuned for more!

MOM Updated

Play Mind Over Matter Here

Thanks to your feedback, I have managed to update MOM. There weren't any game breaking bugs. The following features are more like improvements to the quality of gameplay.

  1. Camera Improvements Camera Y-movement is fixed. Additionally, you can also press down to peek whats beneath you. This'll help with any unwanted suprises. Camera horizontal offset is increased. This makes it easier to look at what is ahead or behind you.

  2. Platform Improvements - Some platforms were impossible to navigate. This is fixed.

  3. Psyhological Conditions: Self-doubt - Now you need to press Q around 5 times. This makes it less annoying. This also occurse less frequently. Depression - A sound primer will be heard before depression occurs. This will prepare you for the decrease in speed and jump ability. Claustrophobia - Made the areas of darkness more visible to balance gameplay.

  4. Rain - The rain particles are more visible.

  5. Level Progression - The Red UI in the main scene is animated.

I also cheekely added some links to my other LD games in-game:

Brief art thoughts from our game, Signal!

In lieu of a full Post Mortem, which I definitely want to put together later, here's some thoughts on the visual design from our LD44 game, Signal. (Also, if you'd like to play it, you can do so right here! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/signal)

The game features an Earth abandoned by most humans, where Robots and AI Systems inherited the world they left behind. And in this new robot society, some of the robots have run amok and need to be disabled and repaired! Since we didn't have much time left for dedicated story-writing, I wanted to do what I could to convey some of these setting ideas through the visuals.

Signal Sprites.png

For one, I wanted to make NPC robots be "normal" models of the enemy robots, with different monitor colors and expressions, to help convey the "buggy robots" problem. Since we also wanted enemies with different behaviors (walking, jumping, flying, chasing, stationary, and so on), I tried to design different models, to communicate a little bit of what they were all about! Dogs chase, rabbits hop, etc. Really enjoyed the challenge of figuring out their designs, and making them each look unique, but similar.

(P.S. I love all my chunky lads, but the expression on the croco-dog Chase Robot is perhaps my favorite)

Signal 1.png

The setting was an abandoned Earth inherited by machines, which was a big idea we really didn't get much time to play with... especially since we had bitten off a big challenge, in making a metroidvania in a weekend! We had a lot of design notes about the setting and story behind each zone planned, so I tried to at least keep the story in mind while designing some of the environment tiles too.

Signal 2.png

Each zone was designed to have it's own theme and core mechanics; a blend of tech and natural areas for an old ai-managed arboretum run wild, junk-heaps and shiny metal facilities around an abandoned factory, caves with ice from a faulty climate control system, and various bioengineered slimes run amok, etc.

Signal 3.png

I'd have loved more time to polish the aesthetics, and play around with the tiles as I worked before we started building levels with them... but we didn't really have the time to put off level design until the graphics were done. There were places where things were visually busy or visually samey, and I'd have loved to have some more time to fill out areas with details and variation too... but I was pretty happy with how everything came out, all in all.

If you've played Signal, I hope you enjoyed it, and it's visual design, too! And if you haven't and think you'd like to, feel free to head on over to our LD Page here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/signal

Some dev thoughts

23b32.png

We decided early to make a game that challenged us technically and we knew beforehand that the game would be incomplete because of it, given the short time of 3 days. Thus, our goal this jam wasn't to make the most enjoyable game but instead something that is rather unique / uncommon.

Making the world spherical had a lot of time consuming challenges. From the start we used a sphere object, made our own gravity system etc. At that point, the world was an actual globe. However, half-way through we decided that using what Unity calls Terrain objects, would be really nice for making different levels, especially the feature that allows mass placement of trees, making hills and drawing textures on the ground. It's basically a great level design tool.

From what we know, no body has made a curved world from the terrain object before. So we had to make our own custom shaders for every different type of object in the world including the terrain, which the latter has no documentation what so ever and it needs to support drawing multiple textures on it (which it now does!). As if that wasn't enough, every regular object needs a different custom shader to curve along the terrain. And every particle effect also needs yet another different shader to to follow the curved world.

By using the above, we could also use Unity's physics engine instead of making our own hack like we did initially with the gravity. (Because the world is actually flat, but renders curved to the player.) The result turned out pretty good technically speaking. However, level design, music, bugs etc had to suffer because of the little time left over in the jam.

The reward for all the trouble is knowing that future level design and game mechanics will be so much better and faster to make if we decide to continue developing the game. However, I'm personally unsure whether a spherical world adds to the fun or not for the players. Maybe it is more annoying than cool?

If you have any feedback regarding whether a spherical world look and feel good or bad, we would appreciate it.

Please note, we have not made any post-jam releases to fix any of the bugs. (They're still present)

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/mojo

This post is very focused on the curved world but there was a lot more to the game than just that. So I would like to hand out special thanks to my team who made the UI, skybox, , characters, animations, scripting etc.

I wanna know, have you eveeeer seen this game?

Play it now, on this suuundaayyy!! (Or whichever day you are seeing this :3)

Haved you played Venatio?

Our entire team is on vacation, so unfortunately we haven't had the time to play & rate your games! I am catching up now, rating your games :) (Post your game here if you want me to play it)
