Making of Tunnel Bug

You can go play Tunnel Bug and give it a rating when you get the chance. I love Ludum Dare, but honestly, I wasn’t fully aware it was happening until the week before when theme voting was about to begin, and it happened to be on the weekend where I had no urgent plans. So as the days drew nearer, I made my preparations for a 48-hour game dev session.

I’ve said in the past that I’m pessimistic about the theme voting during Ludum Dare, where none of the themes I really wanted would get chosen. So it was a bit of a surprise that one of the themes I did vote for in the final round was chosen: Your Life Is Currency. It wasn’t my favourite of the +1s, but I did think the idea of stuff being worth your life was a good one for game opportunities, at least until it got to thinking of one. I think I ended up with the idea that most people ended up having: using your health points to buy stuff instead of an actual currency, which makes a novel mechanic but not really a full game concept like the other ideas I voted for.

Following from my Game Jam rules, I aim my scope for at least three mechanics to focus on. With using health to buy stuff being my main mechanic, I needed two more mechanics. I figured a game about travelling through a winding path where you cannot touch the sides would be fun, so I went with Lunar Lander style controls (minus gravity) and curved paths. The lunar lander controls are fairly simple, two directions and a button to apply thrust, so all I had to do was implement two buttons to change the angle of the player and one button to apply a forward velocity in the player’s current direction.

LD44-00000.gif

The curved path was a bit tricky, I actually use the tilemap class in Vigilante to carve out the path with Cosine Interpolation. I did initially want to use Cubic Interpolation to have smoother curved splines, but the algorithm I was using didn’t really seem to generate a path from the start and end point I wanted, while the simpler Cosine algorithm did. I also wanted the number of points on the curve to increase over time, which would have been more difficult to implement with a cubic method.

LD44-00001.gif

If I had more time, I would have most likely used cubic interpolation or another interpolation algorithm to handle an infinite amount of points, plus implemented an object to handle rendering and collisions of the path, probably using a physics engine. One advantage with the carved tilemap approach was being able to manipulate the tile IDs to create fancy patterns when it came to working on the graphics.

LD44-00005.gif

I used a lot of shaders, my bloom effect shader as well to the point of being almost standard in most of my games (and has barely changed since I used it in Gemstone Keeper). To add a retro look, I wrote two additional shaders fo apply what’s been described as both a Gameboy and Pipboy tint, as well as a line-pattern shader for the dot matrix screen appearance.

LD44-00009.gif

The title screen was done after the base game was added, and was particularly fun for me to do. It took a while to get the menu options to appear right in a horizontal axis as opposed to the standard stack. I also used the Cosine Interpolation with two moving tilemaps to get the wavey line moving in the background. The line pattern is completely random, apart from the ends which took a bit of trial and error to get right.

Music and sound effects were done with LMMS and Chiptone, although to try and move away from chiptune I used a few assets to implement a trance style vibe. While I also used cgMusic to generate a melody, it feels a bit refreshing to have something that doesn’t sound too digitized.

LD44-00006.gif

As of writing, Tunnel Bug has gotten over 30 ratings and reached the 20 rating threshold in less than three days. I’m hoping to see if I can get a good ranking, as I did with Tank Gauntlet last year, but we’ll see.

What If The Arrow Of Light Ending Theme.... HAD LYRICS?

Recently our game Arrow of Light reached an important milestone: over 100 ratings given and received!!

To celebrate, we made an amazing lyrical version of the ending theme from our game. Sylvie wrote the lyrics, and Hubol sung them, remixed the music, and even made a cool music video!

15 Minutes to Live - The Techy Stuff

Just as I did for LD43, I'd like to take a little time to write about some of the more technical aspects of my LD44 entry, 15 Minutes to Live, and some of the design decisions that went into its creation. Hopefully, it'll prove useful and/or interesting.

dialogue5.png

The Inspiration

The basic world concept - your lifespan is a currency that can be bought, sold, or stolen - was borrowed from the movie In Time. As for the gameplay, I've been playing a lot of Shenmue recently, and I think that's where the free-roaming gameplay and focus on NPC dialogue came from. (I wanted the player to be able to interact with objects in the environment, similar to Shenmue, but simply ran out of time for that.)

The Menu... Or Lack Thereof

The first thing you'll notice, upon starting the game, is that there's no main menu or title screen. This was a deliberate stylistic choice - a main menu would have been unnecessary as "start the game" would have been the only option, and I didn't have time to make a fancy-looking title screen. So I decided to just cut out the middle-man and dump you straight into the story:

intro2.gif

Talking To NPCs

NPCs are stored in a single two-dimensional array, where each row contains an NPC, and each NPC contains a spritesheet index, X and Y co-ordinate, and a "flag" value. When you hit Z, the game draws a hitbox and checks if there's an NPC inside it. If there is, it passes their array index and flag value to a dialogue() function, which queues up the appropriate dialogue and handles any necessary changes to NPC flags, your inventory, etc.

To give you an idea how much dialogue there is in this game: 15 Minutes to Live contains 29.8 KB of Lua code. The dialogue() function accounts for 20.9 KB of that. The Lua code for my LD43 entry is only about 10.3 KB!

World Design

The game map was put together piece-by-piece, with roads and buildings being added as necessary until I felt I had a large enough area for the game's plot to unfold within. I tried to ensure there was plenty of variety in the designs of the buildings, and how the roads were laid out. This was partly to reduce the possibility of getting lost or confused, and partly so the map wouldn't look boring.

I tried to use subtle graphical cues to indicate which buildings can be entered and which can't, so you don't waste time running into closed doors. As an example, let's look at the bottom-left corner of the map:

exteriors.png

The red "Vic Vonald's" building is a unique red colour, with a unique sign on the front, and a brown door with a nice, inviting golden handle. All of this indicates it can be entered. The office block has a sign too, but it's the same sign as all the other office blocks, and the doors don't really stand out from the rest of the building. You can't enter it. The brick building to the right has a dull greyscale door, and no sign at all. You can't enter that either.

I'm kind of torn about the graphical style I ended up with. On the one hand, I feel like it's too bright, and doesn't fit the (mostly) serious tone and cyberpunk-inspired concept of the storyline. On the other hand, some of the NPCs and their interactions are too lighthearted to fit with that kind of aesthetic.

What Happens When You Die?

...in the game, that is. Since 15 minutes ended up being more than enough time to complete the game, I don't think anyone's seen the death animation yet. So here it is:

die.gif

It looks kinda dumb, but it's much more effective in-game, where it's accompanied by a loud, high-pitched "BEEEEEEEEEEEEP--", like the flatlining of a heart monitor.

That's all!

Thank you for your time; I hope this was interesting or informative in some way. If you haven't played 15 Minutes to Live yet, please do! I hope to get around to playing as many entries as I can during these last few days of the rating period.

Post Compo Version

I have been doing a bit more to my entry Skeleton Arena 1.jpg There is now a title screen and settings menu. The game also defaults to full screen.
Some players had a problem with not being able to see the health bar due to the windows size. this should address that issue. 2.jpg More weapons and armours have been added. Also everything is now textured for a much better look.
Still no idea why the wall was blue in the compo version. I just exported the dds file and it fixed it. 3.jpg We also have shadows. Yay.
The gameplay is pretty much the same. I have tweaked a few things with the combat and added a knock back effect when hit.

Also sound. I added sound. I usually get sound working during the competition, but my sound engine was broken.
All fixed now ready for the next Ludum Dare.

Not really sure where to take this game next other than adding some more graphical effects and some player statistics.
I thought I would upload this now before the rating time ends and everyone runs off.

Thanks everyone

Hello LD Peeps,

I just wanted to extend my thanks to everyone who's reviewed my game, as this was my first ludum dare and I'd say it was a success! I'll be writing a postmortem after my finals this week. I'm pretty happy with how the game turned out though, and proud that I was able to finish it after almost falling asleep nearly every second on Saturday (sleep is important people, remember that).

If you'd like me to play your game and leave you a review with some feedback and hopefully constructive criticism, pop a link in the comments.

If you'd like to play my game and (optionally) leave me some feedback, here's a link to my game. However, A Controller Is REQUIRED to play!

Welcome ! Paylife (Ludum Dare 44 Theme: Your life is currency) is built in plain HTML5/JavaScript with a framework I am developping.

I challenged myself creating this game in only 24h instead of the regular 48h !

Rules :

  • it is a mouse-only game
  • you have 60s to break your best score

  • clicking on cards cost life

  • cards increase life per second releasing hearts
  • catch hearts to gain life

  • when an heart flies away, you lose 1 life

I'd like to :

  • add sfx

This was my second Game Jam, so I hope you'll like this game. Thank you for your support.

My entry Gore, and my predictions

I managed to submit for the 3rd time (an ARPG inspired by Diablo and DOOM), and based on the feedback, I made some predictions :slight_smile:

Heyo!

I've been very incredibly busy for the last few days, but now I'm back into the LD groove! Did you miss me (or even notice I was gone)?

I wanted to remind you that my game exists, Sigillis! You draw on the screen, then the game recognises your drawing to cast a spell. It's actually really fun, you should try it if you haven't yet! It all works surprisingly well for something made in 48 hours, which was a happy surprise!

Freeze Spell Demo.gif

If you're interested, you can play the game here!

I hope you enjoy, and if you did (or didn't), please leave a rating, and maybe some feedback? All the comments thus far have been incredibly useful, so thank you to everyone!

Also, there's a devlog coming out about the drawing algorithm... About that, it's delayed... Real life has been very busy, so sorry... I'll keep working on it in my free time, and will continue striving to get it to you asap. Super sorry for the delays. It's definitely still coming, and the LD results date will be an absolute deadline for me (I hope). In the meantime tho, I wish you all the best, peace! :v:

Top 18 feline misdeeds. Does your cat do these?

Yes, we brainstormed about this during the jam, we wanted to choose the best evil minigames for Zoltan. We managed to finish only 4 games for the jam, but...

we are making new minigames to add to our post-jam version.

gattocomputer.gif

If you are a cat owner how much would you score out of these 18 misdeeds?

Your cat: 1. scratches you.

  1. scratches sofa.

  2. hangs to the curtains.

  3. throws cat litter miles away from its box.

  4. pukes around (in the worst cases pukes from a high shelf of inside your backpack).

  5. sits on your laptop (with or without you).

  6. covers everything with fur.

  7. knocks small objects down the edges.

  8. meows to get you open the door and then he doesn't go out.

  9. wakes you up at 6 am putting his butt into your face.

  10. desappears for hours until you find that he managed to slip under the covers of the bed you had just made.

  11. shreds the toilet paper.

  12. eats your plants to the roots.

  13. establishes a reign of terror over your other cats.

  14. Sits in front of the tv especially if there are subtitles you want to read.

  15. robs food from your table.

  16. chews your clothes.

  17. sleeps in the sink.

Does your cat do anything else we didn't mention? Let us know!

Filimonchi looking for feedback and ratings.

Does a game that's flagged as UNFINISHED ever get highlighted on the Ludum Dare front page as other games do?

Looks like I have accidentally left my game set to Unfinished in the Compo final rush hours .. something that as it turned out can't be edited afterwards - I did not had the time to add sound and implement the theme mechanics I had in mind .. but at the end I did managed to complete a game for the Compo.

In any case it's the first time I have troubles getting a single comment - I won't be able to make it to 20 with that pace.. and it's discouraging.

The Origin of Squishies - Part 2 - Squishiness and Physics!

Header.jpg

This is a continuation of the "origin of Squishies" post. Part 1 can be found here: Part 1 - Brainstorming & Art.

11 AM on Day 1

Since I still had time (it was 11 AM of day 1), I wanted to see if I could make the blobs a bit "squishy". I thought it could be fun to have them stretch and get squished together on impact. Maybe not the most important thing to work on but oh well I still had time and it sounded like a fun challenge. :smile:

Squishiness

For the squishiness I wanted to try using the Physics in Unity. Using real physics would give the most natural feeling when a Squishy would be thrown against a wall. Invisible springs inside the blob would make sure the blob would be compressed when it would hit the wall and those springs would push the corners back and bounce it off the wall. Squishiness! :grin:

The idea I had was simple. Instead of one object, the blob would be made of five objects: a center object and four corner objects which were connected with invisible springs. In the images below, the red, orange, light green and green squares are the corner objects, the center object is quite small and not really shown.

Squishiness Experimentation

I attached some springs and started with drop tests, dropping five blobs from different heights. Some examples below:

FallExperiments3.png

While the idea sounds simple (5 objects and a bunch of springs), getting it right ended up being really difficult. It took A LOT of experimentation.

If I put some spring joints/connections too hard, the frequency of the springs would go up and the whole thing would start vibrating. If I attached the joints in the wrong position the blob would become unstable and it would start bouncing around on its own. On the other hand, when the diagonal connections (connecting opposite corners) were not strong enough, the blob would just tilt to the right or left (see 5 above) and if I did not give the springs enough strength in general they could not even counteract gravity and the Squishy became flat. Aaaah...

New inspiration...

At one point I even gave up. (I mean, what kind of weird thing am I spending my time on anyway?) After taking a break, showing it to someone and getting some new inspiration on how to attach the springs, I got motivated again. With new inspiration it suddenly started behaving more like I wanted. Finally, after a total of four hours of experimentation, I got something I liked!

Below is a screenshot of the final game. (I will talk about the hair later.) All the jumping and moving you see is just physics! How cool is that!? The only thing the code does in the image below is call AddForce in the center of the blob twice. Once in the beginning to jump to the right and once to jump the platform.

At the start of the animation below looks like the Squishy pushes itself forward with one of his feet, but that is just the springs doing that somehow. Same for when it rolls a bit further or when it rotates in mid air. The squishy physics looks even cooler than I imagined... :astonished: (How does squishiness even cause such side effects?) SquishyMovement2.gif

Final configuration

SquishySettings.jpg

The final configuration had 16 spring joints/connections for a single Squishy. Every corner object had 2 joints connecting to the opposite side and the center. I called these the "diagonal" connections. Every corner object also had 2 joints connecting to the next corner object. I called these the "clockwise" connections for the lack of a better name. The experimentation learned me that the diagonal joints have to be a lot stronger ("frequency" 30) than the "clockwise" ones ("frequency" 10), but you definitely need both types. Next to the configuration of the spring connections, I also learned that the mass distribution is essential for getting the best squishy behavior. The corner objects have mass 0.1 while the center object has mass 1.

I you want to know, more, have a look at the code... Squishies is open source!

Together this makes the Squishies Squishy! :smiley:

Hairy Squishies!

So, the Squishiness Physics were finally done. Phew... (Was it worth it?)

One thing that still bothered me however was how the hair I painted was completely static. I used a single image for the Squishy and simply deformed that image. But the hair was painted on the Squishy image and that simply did not look right. It did not move naturally. I wanted to see the wind and acceleration in the hairs!

But that is something for another time as this post is already becoming a bit long...

To be continued...

This was part 2 of "the Origin of Squishies". I hope you enjoyed the read!
Future posts will look into the hair animation, platformer path finding and the AI... Stay tuned for more!

If you want to see the Squishies "alive", you can find them here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/squishies.

Timelapse of The Sanguine Fight uploaded!

Hi all!

LD44 was my second time entering the Dare (and the Compo category), and this time I wanted to have something recorded so that I can look back on it at some point if I wanted to! As such, I decided to record and upload a timelapse video of the creation of "The Sanguine Fight", and to share it with you all!

Hopefully someone finds it at least slightly interesting and/or enjoyable :smile:

Patrolling Sawbots

I tried something that I had not done before in Unity for this LD: Raycast2D. You can see the sawbot functioning, and don't forget to play and rate Specimen Delve, here.

What the Sawbots Do

The Sawbots are fairly simple automatons: they patrol back and forth on whatever block they are on, then if they run out of platform to walk on, they turn around. If they bump into something, they turn around. If they see something they can shoot, they stop moving and shoot. That was the general idea, and here's how it went.

Disclaimer: I'm describing what I did, which may or may not be ideal. Experts comment!

The Setup

The Sawbot is a single sprite with an empty GameObject floating out in front of it. To get it moving, I had a few booleans managing what the sawbot was doing, and then a simple translate to move it during FixedUpdate.

``` Vector2 facing; facing = (facingRight) ? transform.right : -transform.right; if (moving) { transform.Translate(facing * speed * Time.deltaTime);
    }
``` There's a small Flip function to rotate the sprite/gameobject as well. The full code is in the PatrolAI.cs script on github. Floating in front of the sprite is an empty GameObject that I aim a ray downward to look for ground ahead of it, and a ray forward to look for targets to shoot. You can see the rays and position below (which will likely be pulled in closer in a later build)

Looking at the Ground

SawbotAIRays.png

And here (but consolidated) are the functions that I used to detect the ground. The LayerMask contains all of the objects that could be ground, while the edgeDetect Transform is the Transform of the empty GameObject that was being used to look ahead at the ground. ``` public Transform edgeDetect;

public LayerMask lm; //looking for ground

    RaycastHit2D hit;
    hit = Physics2D.Raycast(edgeDetect.position, Vector2.down, 1, lm);
    Debug.DrawRay(edgeDetect.position, Vector2.down, Color.red);
    if (hit.collider != null)
    {
        hitGround = true;
        Debug.Log("Robot hit something.");
    }
    else
    {
        Debug.Log("Robot didn't see ground.");
        Flip();
        hitGround = false;
    }

```
Happy Accident Looking Down
This worked well while on a platform, and accidentally worked (sort of) when it walked into a wall, since it detects the wall ahead as ground. As the player froze objects, however, the Sawbot didn't flip. I added a Collision check and when the sawbot hit an object with the "Iceblock" tag, it would turn around.
private void OnCollisionEnter2D(Collision2D collision) { if(collision.gameObject.tag == "Iceblock") { Flip(); //Debug.Log("hit an iceblock"); } }
Unfortunately, after adding additional Sawbot spawning mechanics, I realized that I forgot to update the OnCollisionEnter2D function above, and the below behavior emerged: SawbotCollide.png Two Sawbots would run into each other indefinitely since they neither detected the Sawbot in the collision, or saw the other Sawbot with the ray. My first instinct was: FIX IT! Then, as I watched it happen a few more times, I realized that there was something amusing about these mindless drones running into each other indefinitely, because they were either malfunctioning or poorly programmed to begin with. I started trying to push Sawbots into these positions, and found that I could use their "programming" against them to harvest the level around them.
For me, this was a fun, unplanned, and emergent behavior that I decided to keep. See if you can use this technique against them and get deeper into the caverns in Specimen Delve over here.
My Takeaways
Overall, even though I wandered around the code to make these things function, I was able to get the patrolling, target detection, and shooting all to function with essentially the same technique. Cast our a Ray, determine what it hit, and take action. Having this tool in my back pocket opens up several options for me, and an unexpected number of uses in 2D.
Let me know what you think or what interesting things you may have used RaycastHit2D for. Thank you for reading!
Hey Guys! Check out "Super Psychic" (and "Divine Worshipping")
So I've been having a super fun time in the jam so far, checking out all of your guys' games, and I've got a few things to say:
(1) So many of these games have been incredible! An amazing variety of atmospheres, art styles, and sound design, and so many of these games are so fun that you want to come back and play them later. Great job to everyone who participated!
(2) Check out my game "Super Psychic".You play as a gyspy who has to use tricks and social cues to exploit your customers. I didn't have a lot of time to work on it, but it is fairly well put together, and I would love to recieve some feedback on how I could improve it! Here is the link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/super-psychic
Post jam version of "Don't pay with your life" available!
I finally found the time to create a post-jam version of my game. In addition to some general improvements, I have also considered your suggestions. Among other things, I improved the combat system and the dialogue system. If you have not yet tested "Don't pay with your life", give it a try!
Project Earth
I released my first game on Play Store “Project Earth” so i would like you all to play and give feedback so that i could improve. here is the link to my game https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.NXDeveloper.ProjectEarth FeatureGraphics.png
Why can't we make a game every three days?
Isn't it great what you have done? Alone or joining forces, you made a videogame in a very short time!
Many of us are here because this is our dream job. For some this is their job already, others just wish they could start their own studio, join an established one, or just have a publisher distribute their game.
In any case *what everybody is telling you to do is: MAKE, have finished games in your portfolio. *
Probably every game developer I met had a couple of secret long time unfinished projects: one that was to long to finish alone, the other he or she could never find the time to polish as they wanted.
You contemplate your broken code, your sketches, your half done scenes and you procrastinate.
But then, here it comes the Ludum Dare, thankfully! And * you become an all-accomplishing hell of a game developer for 3 magical days!* How cool is that? You made it! You can do it!
So you think: why can't I do this, every week? (The main reason is because you need to sleep, eat properly, shower and so on XD).
No, seriously, jams show us, every single time, that our limits are far beyond what we thought. Try to remember it when this one will end.
* Bring with you a little of those superpowers* and use it in you daily game development.
Think the same way for you next projects, think small, think original, think feasible, get organized and FINISH them.
That accomplishment feeling will fill you with new energy and will make you start and finish a game after the other, that is exactly what you need in order to get better at it.
So don't abandon your creature now, let it grow, polish it and publish it somewhere, please. :)
Labyrinth of Souls REMASTERED
screenshotemitch/embanner.jpg
I received a lot of great feedback on my game, Labyrinth of Souls. I felt the game had a lot of potential, so I took that feedback and spent the past two weeks or so improving the experience. Now the game is far more terrifying than before and I am very pleased with how it turned out.
If you're looking for an edge of your seat terrifying horror experience, please give this new version a shot and let me know what you think. Thanks!
Pricing Advice?
Hey, how much do you guys think would be an appropriate base non-discounted price for an expanded version of Cyborg Highway? I'd be adding more types of vehicles, a bunch of powers and enemies, much more dynamic traffic, and a story campaign.
I only need a couple more votes until I hit 20 on my game! I'd appreciate any feedback in the comments as well.
The evaluation time is coming to end
Slowly the last week in which we can evaluate our games has passed.
There will be a time to get to know the results soon and everything will be clear. This is the last and maybe the best time to rate the games created by our community. I encourage you to evaluate especially those games that have not yet collected 20 ratings so that these creators could see how they went. Also, leave links to your games at this post with the will to evaluate them, and if you have time to rate our game, it has more than 20 ratings, but each subsequent one is no less important for us.
I'll play your under 20 votes games
Do you have a game that's under 20 votes? I'll play it
Our LD43 Game has Launched at Armor Games
While the Ludum Dare 44 results aren't even in yet, we have some Ludum Dare 43 news! Back in December we submitted what turned out to be our best-rated entry so far, and since then As Of Yet Unnamed has seen a couple of improvements and has just been launched at Armor Games.
  logoemarmorgames/emblog.png
What Happened Since LD43?
Much of the constructive feedback we received revolved around visibility and contrast, so we took that to heart and separated the background and foreground by lightening the darker tones in the back as well as adding a bright red-blinking effect to incoming projectiles. Some other little tweaks here and there and after tackling a big but luckily easily fixable game-breaking bug, we have a pretty solid result that I hope you'll give a go!
- Seize the Clay by @failedstarfish, @adamd and @seconddimension - so wonderfully chill game about making and baking pots
- So-called life by @dreevna, @aleksandr and @kamila - I'm not gonna spoil anything, just give it a play
Face for Death is a 2D runner platformer videogame developed for the April 2019 Lumdum Jam, in where you play a double faced coin and you have to scape from a city plenty of evil rich dudes.
We keep working on a modular level generation protoype and some of the mood we want to give it. Most of core mechanics are working on now, some music and sounds were implemented and it would be scaled soon. In next step we will be bussy in level modules design and probably we will introduce at least a pickeable item and auto-ranking, in order to give it some playability.
Meet the new and real Life Merchant
While creating life merchant, the "Salesman" wasn't supposed to be a tent, it's supposed to be a person, thus the name "Life Merchant". Due to lack of time, I only had a tent in my assets sheet and ended up with that. I'm currrently working on improving the game. So! among other things, I introduce you the freshly drawn (and animated!) Life Merchant, In all its glory!
I never knew that making a video could be such a pain.
:videocamera: **Yes... I'm making a 'techlog' for my LD44 game, Sigillis, and damn is it a pain. :videocamera: **
This is my fourth re-recording of audio, and I've almost got it perfect, which will have to be good enough. Every time, there was some little problem that was just painful to listen to, one time the mic had a denoising filter that randomly turned on and off, now I've had to turn it permanently off (If there's constant noise, I can remove it in post).
My microphone was on the desk, but then I found that over the course of a 20 minute audio recording, my head moved enough for there to be clear variations in the audio level and quality. Now I'm using a headset. I've cleared my room of everything noise producing; my clock is outside (ticking could be heard in the first recording), and I've had to record sound to my phone, since the computer's fan is too loud.
I'm now going through the audio in Audacity, trying my hardest to get rid of all the annoying breathing and other unwanted mouth sounds. Then, there was a part that I had completely mispronounced, unnusable. So, I had to rerecord that bit, but then it was a pain to replicate the original recording environment. I initially just recorded a small part of the sentence, but then there was a clear difference between the first part of the sentence and the second part. So then, I rerecorded the whole paragraph, just to make sure that the new sound fits smoothly into the recording. In the main recording, there are so many random stutters that I didn't even notice, that I've had to cut out, then play with the different levels to make it sound like a continuous sentence.
:paintbrush: So that's how my day has been going thus far.
I'm going to continue working on my 'techlog' for Sigillis, a game where you draw on the screen, then an algorithm detects what you drew. This is what I'm trying to explain, so don't even get me started about the script making process.
Freeze Spell Demo.gif
:videogame: If you'd like, you can play the game before the techlog is released (WebGL). :videogame:
You can of course rate it here and stay tuned for the eventual release of the techlog.
:bookmark: Thank you for reading through my mad ramblings. If you've had a frustrating time making any videos for yourself, I'd love to hear about the challenges you faced, and how you overcame them. I'm sure there are many more challenges awaiting me with the production of this techlog, so wish me luck! Cheers, JUSTCAMH :v:
My broken phone adventures.
So... last week I went back to school and my phone didn't want to turn on (at least I thought that was the problem). It only vibrated when I hold down the power button. I tried charging it, but nothing! The worst part was that I had a field trip next week.
download.jpeg
You see, my phone is a Motorola e2. I know that it is old, but it's futuristic in it's way (It warms my hands in cold winter and that is a feature that I NEED in my house). Motorola phones have many gestures. Mine only has one. Shake to open camera. That means if I throw my phone at my bed... it takes a picture of me. I tried shaking it and it vibrated. That meant that the phone was on, but the screen didn't work. I tried turning it of and on, but nothing worked. I gave up and took my phone to "Media expert" (I don't know if it is only in Poland).
large.jpg
OK. The phone should be repaired before the field trip. I still need a plan B. I know! Google hangouts! My tablet has a Sim slot, but it can't be used for calling. Just for the internet. My old tablet can be used for calling, but it lags hard and its old. I tried putting the SD card in the tablet, but then I realized. My tablet has a normal SIM card port, but I only had a mini SIM card. It was already too late. It was stuck.
2rcQ4BUFQorY2GWi.medium
What to do now? I handed the tablet over to my mum. She tried taking it out with a needle, but she couldn't even see it. I tried taking it out myself and after a lot of pain it finally popped out.
Now I just had to get an adapter. It was hard to find, but I got it! I put the SIM card in my tablet and... nothing. It didn't even detect it! Now, what to do? Tried cleaning the Sim card, blowing on the port, airplane mode, cleaning the case and even formating the tablet... nothing. Now, panic mode!
This is my final setup: my old tablet with a 24/7 hotspot and my new tablet form using the internet. OMG! This is ridicules! Some people may say that I'm crazy, some would say that I'm unlucky, but I only know one thing... NO MUM, I DON'T WANT YOUR IPHONE!!!!!!
Thanks everyone!
I did it (yay!) - I finally got 20 reviews on my game. Thanks to everyone who took a look.
You can find my game here if you’re interested: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/44/failing-human
Seeking Musical Feedback!
Hey everyone! :musical_note:
It's my first LD! Yay! I've made the music and sound effects of this game. I'm currently seeking for some feedbacks about it (mostly the score, but also the sound effects if you're into that).
You can listen to the full score here in better quality.
Making a game music score was a real challenge to me, especially considering it was the first time I made music for a game and not for myself. Moreover, I was used to produce more ambient or chill music, and nothing like a super rythmic and tense boss battle score!
I actually lost a lot of confidence in the first 24h trying to make something. Finally, in the end of the second day, I made a first version that you can hear here (click under the "start" word) using an oooold bassline and drums I made many years ago. But I was not super proud of this, so I continue working on it and came up with the whole soundtrack - that I'm more or less satisfied of - in the last 24h.
Please, I'll gladly hear any feedback you have on this soundtrack. :musical_score:
I'll also appreciate if you would precise if you are yourself a music maker, a game music maker or even if you're not
Our (in our eyes) best game we've made so far! We're really proud about what we've achieved and we would be glad if you guys would take a quick look at our game <3
An extract of the story:
„Once upon a time in a world filled with darkness, monsters lived in peace and harmony. Until a creature of light was born. Tortured by the light emitted by the strange creature, the monsters began to attack to bring back the natural order of the world. Just as the first monster’s strike was set to end the gleaming light for good, the light began to transform into…“
Today, progress was made!
I've been hard at work on my upcoming 'techlog' all day long, and its going great. I've got audio all recorded and edited, and now I've completed the intro to the video below. I'm so dang happy about how it all looks and sounds, but damn did it take a long time. Hopefully that preview has you psyched for the full video, but unfortunately the full thing isn't ready yet... Stay tuned for more info!
*Oh yeah, bout the game... It's called Sigillis, and you draw symbols on the screen, which the game recognises and uses to cast a spell. *
Important note, the below video is not the finished product, sorry...
https://youtu.be/A2gdLNnMXAo
:videogame: You can play the game here. :videogame:
If you have the time, you can rate and leave feedback too. If you're interested in hearing about this techlog when it comes out, follow me through your method of choice; on LD, or on Itch. There will be a post on this page too, but make sure you're subscribed so as to not miss it. Sorry for the huge production time, I'm working as hard as possible to pump it out asap. I'll also be posting these little techlog update videos daily til release, just because it keeps me motivated to share my hard work!
So after watching that little preview, what criticism can you lay upon me? Be as harsh as you'd like, tell me to redo it if necessary. I'd love to have feedback on the video before it's released, that way I can actually improve it. So any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Cheers, and hope to see you around, JUSTCAMH. :v:
My Top LD 44 Games - by LD Categories
Hi everybody !
This post will be like @jeremy-ryan 's (that you can find here). I'll copy his idea of selecting games by LD's categories but I'll try to name other games that he's speak about. But, definitely check out his post, he's got some nice picks.
*The dealine for _Playing+Rating_ is in a few days now, so I guess it's the perfect time for sharing with you the best games I've played so far. *
I've prioritize games that have not many ratings. Most of them are under 50 ratings, sometimes they barely have 20 and one even has only 6 ratings, definitely check it out for him to score !!!
Overall
PUCASERPENT.png
The Tail of the Serpent by @le-slo (JAM) and Pucamuc by @catonator and @mors (JAM)
Music, innovative and fun gameplay, good take on the theme, great atmosphere and nice graphics, they have it all. These are my absolute best picks on this LD. Definitely check them out.
Pucamuc is a super juicy and colorful aventure plateformer with great humor and actual game design. In this game you have to move while jumping which is a bit weird at first but then become like a second nature with which you can fool around and have fun.The levels are challenging but not too difficult, creative enough to introduce new mechanics very frequently and have a little depht with secrets here and there. GREAT JOB to the team.
The Tail of The Serpent is a great puzzle game with a simple but effective atmosphere. The gameplay here evolves around the question: how can you move as a snake? You can eat your tail to become smaller and also to change the composition of your body with different orb shapes that needs to be in certain places to win the level. Overall the experience is super if you're into puzzle games.
Theme
ENTE 15.png
15 Minutes to Live by @f1krazy (COMPO) and Ente by @j0ye (COMPO)
Well, Compo really seems to let you dive into great ideas for a game.
In Ente you have to sell your own true secrets to the NPCs to have more time to spent on the island. Here, your own life is currency and you feel really like loosing cherished memories that you never shared with anyone to continue playing.
15 Minutes to Live delivers a very interesting story inspired by the movie "In Time". In this game, all humans have predetermined lifespans but yours has been stolen. You wake up and have only 15 Minutes to Live and to discover who stoll you your lifespan.
Mood
THE TRADE.png
The Trade by @jantunes, @isaque-picao-sanches, @davidvfilipe and @chickenpt (JAM)
This one only have 6 ratings!
The Trade is really hard to describe, you really have to experience it. Here, we got a true art performance. It's something very different, something that will really make you have deep feelings, that will make you be face to face with yourself ... The description of this game is not lying … Definitely try it out.
This one could have be in the mood category too. Dear Substance of Kin is a masterpiece of pixel art that uses details and such to give a dark atmosphere to the game. You embody a mysterious figure that ventures one more time in a desolate village to listen to the people's desires. I'm not telling more, it's an amazing game that needs to be experienced by itself.
There is no "Narrative" category in LD's classification but this one has an interesting storytelling which is not only by reading and learning but also by doing.
INFLATE MOON.png
Inflate me to the Moon by @xellaya and @ddrkirbyisq (JAM)
Inflate me to the Moon (that could be subtitled "a tribute to Bart Howard") is a game made of fast paced and very fun mini games.
I have absolutely adored the music of this game and also its sound effects that were super rich. The overall score of the game is pretty diverse and super catchy. Really, like, many genres and even a cover! :O It goes really well with the art style in making a goofy atmosphere with a - kind of - dramatic storytelling :)
I had a ton of fun playing this game which is also very, very polished.
And it has voice over ... me being like "what ?!" Definitely wins the Audio category.
You can listen to its soundtrack here!
KNIFE FRIEND.png
KNIFE=LIFE by @quadape (COMPO) and Our Dear Friend by @jyrkface, @ham and @wildebeest (JAM)
KNIFE=LIFE is an awesome action game where you shoot knives with slowmotion and dodge ennemies' bullets. You can buy powerups in exchange for hearts and collect more hearts as you progress in the level. The mechanic and the physics are overall very well done and the actual gameplay is super addictive and very fun. There is a loooot of juice in there and you'll love to die and retry until you're the boss of the game.
Our Dear Friend takes a more narrative turn but is also super fun with a lot of feedback and gameplay elements. Here you progress in a dark cave with your hook and a few arrows. You can then trade some of your maximum health for powerups (more arrows, more rope, more jumps). The level adds more ennemy types as you progress. Also, you have a bit of lore and atmosphere with some dialogue lines, which is super cool. The art, also, is pretty well done because you can't see really far from you so you must learn to be careful ...
SEIZE THE HEARTS.png
Seize The Clay by @failedstarfish, @adamd and @seconddimension (JAM) and 99 hearts by @failpositive and @barret (JAM)
Seize the Clay as the name suggests, is a game about pottery. It's like those NintendoDS-make-your-art games. You have everything to make pottery and can be creative about it. Nice job, didn't see something like that coming.
99 Hearts is a game inspired by the board game Caracassonne. Here, you can make your own map each time you kill all the ennemies on a tile. And each tile gives you also a random powerup. Then, you can quickly become mega baddass and overpowered and that's a ton of fun!
Also, both of these game have incredible soundtrack and are super fun to play.
