Incoming :

-Some general game fix

-Level balance fix

-A bunch of new crazy levels

-New addition to increase the possibilities of the main mechanics

-Adding sounds and visual effects

-Changing the enemies behavior

-Changing the aiming system (it's a reversed one actually but players told me it would be better if it was a more classic aiming system)

-A purple turtle

Looking for a platformer with a cool mechanic?

If you are looking for a platformer then try Movin' and Keepin' Alive. In this game you can't stop moving which gives it the figurative meaning of keep it alive which is the theme while you also are carrying a special item that is very important which you are literally have to keep alive. It's a fun game and I think you will enjoy it. It may be a little hard, but if you try you can do it. If you complete the game comment that you did because I would love to know. If you dont think it is possible, it is. I finished the game so I know it's possible. Here is the link to Movin' and Keepin' Alive. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/movin-and-keepin-alive

Version 2 is coming out with easier levels so too so you can get the full game experience.

Lastly, I wrote this post to get more ratings and I understand that you may need more too. So please help me reach 20 ratings. Also, I will play the games of all the commenters on my game and this post.

Some of my favorites so far

Keeping SNES Alive!

JAM GAME by drludos (@drludos) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keeping-snes-alive snes.gif

A simple game where you jump an SNES game from one console to another to keep them running for as long as you can. I don't think this would work in the real world, but it is fun for the game. The graphics and sounds work well, but it is on my favorites list because it runs on an actual SNES if you have the hardware to run it.

No Time to EGGsplain

JAM GAME by NyanYann (@nyanyann) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/no-time-to-eggsplain egg.gif

This game is a lot of fun. You are a wagon carrying an incredible fragile egg from start to finish on every level. You could just crawl along and finish every level with no problems, but that is boring. What is awesome is flying over a jump, having the egg leave the wagon, pulling a flip, and then landing and frantically changing speed to catch the egg again before it becomes a pancake (omlette?). It is a ton of fun and I'll be coming back to play it through to completion later!

Soul Seed

JAM GAME by unept (@unept) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/soul-seed tree.gif

Nice, clean platformer. Keep a cursed tree alive while looking for a cure or something to break the curse? Not sure exactly what the plot is or why you care about the cursed tree or why you lose if it dies, but it doesn't really matter. The music and graphics are extremely relaxing but the limited water you need to feed the ever hungry tree forces you to keep expanding. Running frantically back to the tree carrying water while staring at the ever decreasing bar at the top of the screen while the soothing music plays in the background is a lot of fun. Plus, the animation on the little guy is great.

The King's Knight

JAM GAME by Fax (@fax) https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-kings-knight knight.png

Puzzle games are hard to make. And they can be frustrating to play. Escort missions are almost universally hated. This game shouldn't work, but it does. The king just walks around and obeys the directions of every sign he runs into. Unfortunately most of the signs will lead him right into spikes, or arrows, or a bunch of knights that want to kill him. You have to run around and get him to his throne by hitting things with your sword. The king reminds me a lot of those videos of people looking at their phones and crashing into signs and poles and stuff.

Personally, I think the kingdom might be better off without this particular king, but you have to save him anyway.

Our game: The Keep! It's Alive!

Our game's entire connection to the theme is the title. You are a keep who eats guys. You can play it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-keep-its-alive keep.gif

It's not a cucumber after all...

It may initially look like a cucumber, but in reality it grows into a loyal friend and protector! Check out our game "The Last Guardian" here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-last-guardian (you can play on the web too) growing_friend256.gif

ludum dare is so good :D

i have a problem with finishing my games, because i just feel like all of my games should be so good and fun to play, and then after some time just get bored working on it and start a new game project :c this is my first gamejam and i really liked how the time limit just makes you think "oh i should finish the game real quick" all the time :D and turns out you don't actually need to keep adding more mechanics and gameplay into the game. games can be fun enough with just a few mechanics!

anyway, feel free to play my game and give me some feedback about it! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/a-way-out Cover_Art.png

Timelapse

Hi guys, I recorded this timelapse when was developing my game for this LD.

This LD was very different for me, because I had no skills with shaders, and to accomplish the idea I had for the theme I had to get out of my confort zone and learn a little about it in a record time.

At the end, everything went well and I could finish my game in time.

I hope you like the timelapse, and if you didn't play "Gaia" yet, take a chance!

Bet you can't even last 3 seasons

Hey guys so I am getting nice feedback for my first ldjam game, and people are really liking it, so a big thanks! Do you have what it take to pass even 3 seasons in this (unintentionally)devilishly hard stratergy game? Find out now : https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/harvest-season

Please please, post WebGL versions!

Since I'm using macOS, I don't see a lot of games that I can play  If you're using Unity, building WebGL is not hard, you just have to switch platforms and build  If you'll get some errors about AnimationControl, don't bother - that happened to me too, but it didn't affect my build. A lot of people faced the same issue, Unity fixed it in some of the version, but not in mine

(On my first Ludum Dare in 2018 I wasn't able to build on WebGL because it didn't support placing videos and I had to work on this. Not sure if this has changed in Unity.)

In the meantime, when your game will build (it takes a bit of time when building on WebGL), you can check my game, it's multiplaform. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/peacemaker

Peace! :v:

Why don't you share too?

I don't see alot of posts sharing their personal best games they played, and I think by now since alot of us have played many games, we should also promote other good games beside our games....

So I have played over 30 games by now and now I would like to share my BY FAR THE BEST games I played, these devs really need feedback, they are underrated and I have no shame in admitting they have a game better than mine.

I'll be honest with the feedback and will focus mainly on design and gameplay-ability (is that a word) ? I know it's a jam, and there is enough time. I know the feeling, but the idea behind is more important. I'll try to give my impression on that :D but remember honest doesn't mean cruel

Mushie Post-Mortem

I'd like to use this post to not only promote my - cough entry MUSHIE cough - but also discuss some of the things I enjoyed, learned, and took away from this Ludum Dare. First, check out this timelapse I put together - it's about 24 or so hours of footage condensed into 12 minutes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spPf3jrpiU4

Preface

I wil start by saying that this was the most confident I've felt with a Ludum Dare (or any game jam, for that matter) ever. I can attribute this to a couple things:

  • New job has really sharpended my all around programming skills
  • Moving into a new condo with a dedicated workspace has made me more comfortable
  • Spending the last few weeks in isolation working on game projects has helped shake off some rust

All that being said, it was not a perfect performance and like for most of us, time management was the bane of my existence. If you peep the timelapse you can clearly see where most of my time was spent - and that was coding.

I enjoy coding and can get lost in it, especially when digging into new concepts and experimenting. With this Ludum Dare I wanted to try something I had a little experience with but never fully executed on - and I did just that. This entry was my first serious attempt at a 2D game in Unity and my first ever platforming game.

I really, really enjoy developing platformers. There is so much opportunity to tweak and balance the game feel and level design - and that is something I have always loved above all when it comes to game development. Having refined a 2D platforming controller over the last several months and implementing the new Unity Input System with it made getting a moving character and setting up control mappings a breeze. That left me with most of my time to hone the gameplay and get in some cool art and sound.

Sadly, I didn't get the look and sound I was really going for and had to settle on some rushed polish at the end to tie it together. So, given all this - what went right and what went wrong?

What Went Right?

  1. Having my platforming script to work from made getting started effortless
  2. Sleeping on my idea made for a more concrete concept to start from, which vastly limited my scope
  3. Having a limited scope meant compartmentalizing tasks and getting through them went pretty smooth
  4. Keeping focused when faced with bugs and uncertainty

The first three are pretty self-explanatory, but I want to highlight Number 4. One of the toughest things I deal with in Ludum Dare besides coming up with a good idea and having time for polish - is keeping it together. As the weekend draws to an end, my stress levels climb in suit and my work suffers. This time around, I just kept pushing and pushing and did not allow myself to get discouraged or even think of tossing in the towel.

I can't really attribute this to anything other than just having been there, done that*. This marks my 7th year participating and my seventh submitted entry. Everytime I jump into this challenge the stress goes down.

What Went Wrong?

  1. Being newish to 2D in Unity came with some pitfalls I'll outline below
  2. Neglected art and polish affected the game's feel
  3. Rushed music may have negatively impacted the game's feel, too
  4. Not enough time was spent on levels, so the pacing suffered a bit

Number 1 is really the heavy hitter. For the majority of my game development in Unity I have focused on 3D. It was the only thing Unity really excelled at when it first came out and it was what stuck with me. Since the introduction of the suite of 2D tools in Unity, I have not really spent ample time picking them up and instead have continued to lean on Construct 2/3 to build 2D games.

This presented a number of challenges to me - such as forgetting that collison and trigger methods have "2D" in them or mixing up some of the vector maths from a 3D perspective. I really wanted to leverage more of the 2D tools in my level design, but because I was unsure of how to use them and didn't have the time to focus on level design that all flew by the wayside. What I was left with was some pretty rudimentary levels with no style or variance.

The Takeaways

  1. Having a pre-built belt of tools to start with
  2. Sharpening the tools you have
  3. Picking up on some new ones before Decemeber rolls around

All in all, I feel successful coming out of this Ludum Dare. I feel like I can take my mistakes and focus in on those aforementioned takeaways and improve upon them. I want to build a loose "game jam framework" that contains some good starter code and UX stuff out of the box. This will cut back on some unnecessary dev time that can be then relegated to art and level design. I'm not sure exactly what that entails, but I have plenty of time to figure it out! Lastly, I need to learn more about Unity's 2D tools before the next jam, so I can put them to use!

I had a great time and came up with a solid little game at the end of it. Really been enjoying playing everyone's games and seeing all the different takes on the theme. You all killed it! It's so awesome to have this community where we can all get together and make cool shit!

Play and rate away!~

Unity projects

Why do so many Unity projects only provide a windows build? I'm fine if it also has a web version, but I encountered quite a lot of games that only have a windows version.

I thought it's super easy to make a build for every OS with Unity

Bug Fix Uploaded

Some of my game testers mentioned that there was a bug in the WASD controls. I fixed and uploaded a version so the WASD, Arrow, and Gamepad controls are working as they should.

I hope you give the working version of Insect Infestation a play.

Seven nights - post-mortem from a programmer perspective

It's my third Ludum Dare participation. Someone would've guessed that by now I should have a better understanding of what I can deliver in a three days game jam duration. I became much more proficient in Unity and it takes me much quicker to figure out how to implement a specific mechanic even If it's completely new for me. Thing is - this time our type of the game was completely out of my comfort zone. So far I programmed 3 simple platformers, for this Ludum Dare our team came up with an idea of a top-down game. With stuff like inventory management, equipped items, buffs, and crafting system. I should've known that this was too much for me, but Ludum Dare jams were always supposed to be a challenge for me and the team, and the idea that we came up with was so good it would be waste to throw it away.

screen1.png

In every jam I participated so far, there was always a time on the last day when we decided that we need to cut-off content to make it in time. Our final product is then about half of the size that it was supposed to be. But it was made on time.

unity window.png

With our current idea, everything plays together so tightly that there was nothing to cut-off without the serious impact of the game. That's why when we published it, it was highly unplayable and had a lot of bugs which made completion impossible. Who would've guessed that more content is not only more stuff to design and program but also more to test. Now after a few additional days of polishing and fixing critical bugs, it's kinda ready. Ready in a shape that Ludum Dare entry deserves. There are still a lot of ideas and improvements that we want to add. But now the game could be enjoyed.

unity window 2.png

I learned so much in recent days, it's this amazing feeling of self-development that makes every LD enjoyable. It was the first time that I created a simple shader using Shader Graph, made proper use of Unity ScriptableObjects, and had so many objects interacting with each other on collision. This was also first jam when I participated in a team that had someone responsible for the sound (kudos to amazing composer Gabriel Pulcinelli). It's so good to hear music composed specifically for your game.

If you like a specific atmosphere in games I highly recommend checking our entry. If not for the gameplay (which ended up a little confusing), then for amazing music and graphics.

P.S. Singletons are evil, but also so very tempting to use, especially when the speed matters. 11 is my new record of them singletons.png

Have you played Keeper of the Flame yet?

People are saying "By far my favorite entry in LD46" and "It’s beautiful, the music fits well and its very fun to play!" Wow, you could say things about it too once you beat all ten of it's puzzle-platforming stages!

Give it a go!

Delivery Derby now works on Mobile Web

Play in your browser now mobile/desktop

We've done a post jam update for a different version that has touch screen support for mobiles. Tried to make changes seamless between keyboard inputs and touch by dynamically switching based on last input (like many videogames let you swap between controllers/mouse+keyboard in game without menus).

Played some great games so far, looking forward to playing more!

Just finished the bug fixes to our game, come check it out or play the original

we've just finished fixing a couple of bugs you guys have discovered, why not give our new version ago?

List of bugs we fixed:

Corrected the piano soundtrack so there was no gap in the looping
