Hello! We just uploaded a version of our entry, Pigeon Ascent, with many bug fixes. On our game, you take care of your own pigeon as it fights and evolves while facing other pigeons, and at the end it must defeat the legendary Pigeon God.
I know it sounds pretty weird, but we had tons of fun developing it, and it was even greater to see so many people playing it and saying what they liked and disliked!

In case you are interested in playing the first version and seeing its problems, you can still do so by playing the game here. The changelog for the fixed version is:

Some post-compo stuff, I Made a quick trailer video for my compo entry, as well as a nice gif to show off how RAD the game is. Getting a linux build up was easy, but web isn't playing nice with me so I guess that's off the table for this jam.
In my head I've been toying with the idea of modifying the game to have procedural content, turn it into kind of an infinite runner, but that might be a bit of a challenge on this quake based engine I'm using.

In the meantime I have found the time to play some of the Ludum Dare titles. There are thousands of submissions this time, which means that you will most likely only get to see a small fraction of all games. Anyways - I would like to introduce you to some of my favorites:
* Woodpunk * - Seriously? A complete Soundtrack with 22 tracks and a highly polished game? Good Job.
* MELT * - Great Idea, great execution. Perfect Jam Game.
* Milk for A Dead Man * - Deliver Milk to a Papyrus-esque skeleton king. A super funny game, where you play as the dungeon's traps.
* Mount Ookie * - Fell in love with the artstyle and it turned out to be a great game too.
* Remember, Apollo * - The first game I tested - instant bullseye. Poetic, artistic, and well executed.
* FireKeeper * - More like an artsy experience - I don't want to spoil it at this point. Definitely worth checking out!
* Delivery Hero * - You play as a cute little bird and deliver some toilet paper to isolated people. Corona leaves its marks.
* Embers * - Beatiful pixel art, high level of polished and very fun to play.
The selection is - of course - purely subjective. If you have any recommendations, feel free to comment or message me!
If you want to check out our game, you can do it here: * St. Hestia *

Looking for some dark games to play in my browser - graveyards, ghosts etc. U got some?

It's been a few days since we finished and released Todd and Bobb's Excellent Adventure, a short Ludum Dare 46 game, to the public and we have received some awesome feedback!
That feedback has been translated into numerous tweaks and fixes that can be seen in the previous patch notes. However, there is one significant pain point that we have not changed and that is the controls!
Rather than revamp the controller entirely and move to a more traditional system, I encourage you to try it a few times to get the feel of it. While it can be different at first, once you understand and get used to it, you will find that the game plays really well with the current control scheme! To that end, here are some quick tips to survive and a link to a full run completed in 4:02 so you can see them working (note that this is not even close to a "perfect run" as I get knocked down a few times).
https://youtu.be/8uB7_C62Qqg
Tips:
While sprinting consumes energy it is key to survival, save your sprints for when you have the lead on the zombies but need to get through a tight spot.
Torch swing can consume energy fast, it works in a forward arc, and has a limited range but is effective at scaring clumped mobs. Use torch swing when mobs are clumped and mobbing your dragon or in your way and unavoidable. Torch swing is activated with the left mouse button.
Use obstacles to your advantage. The Undead don't have the ability to climb on tables or rocks effectively.
The lanterns need to be visited and used in order to light the next one, follow the glowing semi-circle if you get disoriented.
Keep moving! The environment is pretty nice (great work by our design master!) but the timer is a bit too tight to waste time wandering unless you don't mind dying :)

Have fun and share your best times on social media with the hashtag #toddandbobbfullrun!

Hi everyone!
I've had a few people ask about how I approached the procedural animation for the spider creature in my game so I decided to write a blog post about it!

Do you like pixel art? Do you like timelapse videos? Well, I happen to have both those things, and so I decided to cross the streams. This is how I slapped together the art for ASTRODRIFT in Photoshop CS6, with a brief moment of level design in Tiled sprinkled somewhere in there.
I also captured some (very poorly executed) gameplay at the end, so you can more clearly see how it all worked out. Mind you, do play ASTRODRIFT for yourselves so you can really see it in action. And if you do play the game, please leave us some feedback.

Yesterday, I made a post about how I created a dialog engine from scratch. However, I didn't get into how the trash talk system works, which is what this post is about! You can check out yesterdays post: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/a-samurai-friend-of-mine/behind-the-scenes-of-my-own-game-engine-made-in-72-hours
The trash talk system is also managed by the dialogManager class that manages all the dialog in the game. However, the actual content of the trash talk is dependent on the scene. I will get into how I managed scenes, or "contexts" as they are called in my DIY game engine, on another post. We can briefly describe them as the entity that is aware of what is going on in the level.
All the content of the trash talk that is going to be displayed on that level is kept in it's context object as an std::vector.

This "trash talk stack" gets filled during the initialization of the context. So if I wanted to add a new trash talk line to any level I can just go to it's .cpp file and .push_back a new line.

Okay great! So how do I decide which enemy gets which line? It's all random. Anything pushed into the trash talk stack is randomly distributed amongst enemies that are alive and in the scene. Well, actually not that random. Every enemy gets to display a single line for 3 seconds and then the next enemy displays the next trash talk line for the next 3 seconds. So it's actually sequential. However, because the number of enemies and the number of unique lines don't match, it all seems random. At least untill you play the same level again.

It's pretty simple so far. But I added one more thing which seemed like a cool idea to me.
These lines already have the ability to change based on the level, for example they can trash talk you about how your chances of beating the "Big O" is so slim before you actually beat him. And then when you actually beat the boss they can tell you how he had a really nice family and how he was a great individual who liked to give back.
I also wanted them to react to what happens during the fight. This piece of code makes it possible for the enemies to react when you hit them during the fight.

One question you might still have in mind is, how does DM->addPopUp() work. It's also pretty simple. It just pushes the text into another stack. DM is the dialog manager. The dialog manager has it's own popup vector. However, it stands for what is being said instead of what can be said. Meaning if something is in the popup vector of the dialog manager, it is also being displayed on the screen. Popups automatically get deleted after a while so that the trash talk text disappears after a few seconds. This is how it's done.

That's about all. Well, actually there is much more to explain before all this comes together but since I don't want to bore people to death this is it for today's post.

By the way, if you have a good idea for a trash talk line that can be used in the game, comment below and I might actually add it into the game!
Also, try the game out to see how it all comes together at the end:

So it turned out that our game was actually quite good. Which was quite surprising. Atleast to me.
From the outset I thought we'd get too bogged down in learning new tools and learning the boundaries of what we could achieve together as a team. For some of us it was the first time we'd ever been in a team this large.
I'd done enough projects that I knew the key is always to keep it simple. To ask the key question, what is the game actually about? We had a few scope creeps. Suggestions about adding additional resources or more complicated battle mechanics. But at the end of the day additional mechanics didn't add anything to the core concept of the game. If we couldn't get the core concept right then what was the point?

The other things I've learnt from prior projects is that nobody cares about a game unless it feeels good to play. This, to me, is why games are so hard to make. What the hell feeels good to play? A kinda hope we acheived that with Wayfarers but the game is far from being the best it can be. There is so much that can be done to make it better that it boggles the mind
In conclusion Wayfarers is the culmination of a lot of crap that ended up making something quite okay. For ludum dare making something that you can honestly say turned out pretty good is quite the acheivement. Atleast to me anyway :p

This time aroud I used my own game engine, and I'm glad that went really well. The engine is written in C# and cross compiles to Javascript so it can be easily played in a browser from platform (PC, Mac, phones etc.) I ran in a few problems that were easy to resolve, but it really shows me in what places my engine was lacking!
If you want to try the game out for yourself, it can be played from here!

First off I want to thank everyone for all their valuable feedback. When we first started developing the game we had a very dark background so our cursor color was white and our bullets were yellow.
However when we changed backgrounds we never adjusted the colors of the bullets or cursor to be more visible. So one of the number one issues stated in the feedback was that it was hard to see the cursor.
We also changed the shop text from white to black to be more visible
So this update changes nothing in gameplay. The game plays exactly as it did before, it's just now more accessible with the new updated color changes

I thought I'd do one of these for anyone that might be interested! 🙂
Ubergine was made by 3 people in the UK, myself as the programmer and audio guy, my fiancé @curleyrach doing environment art and UI and our friend @olliemotion doing character art and animations.
Me and Ollie had done a few Ludum Dares in the past where I was just doing audio but it had been a few years since then!
I've bounced on and off a lot of game engines over the years for various reasons but I have recently been using Monogame and I absolutely love it. It fits best with how I want to program games.
The Idea
We ran through a few ideas at the start but settled where we did for a few reasons. As this was my first time programming in Monogame, I haven't got round to programming a working camera solution yet 😅 so we wanted to keep the game stationary if possible. We also chose a side on perspective to allow for sprite flipping to ease the amount that Ollie and Rachel had to do!
The Ubergine itself was originally a tree, but we thought to ourselves, "Why would vegetarians be trying to eat a tree?" and made the jump to vegetables. It was then a case of finding a long visually interesting vegetable to fit in the play space we had available, and well... 🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆🍆

We'd originally planned a basic arena shooter, but soon had the idea of splitting the controls. I was happy with this decision as it felt (at least slightly) original. It can be tough to control 2 characters at once, but I find when it clicks and you pull it off it feels great!

What went right
This was my first time building a complete game with Monogame as I've just been making prototypes and experiments for the past 2 months. With that in mind I'm very happy how the game turned out, seemingly bug free! 😲🤞 I did a lot of stuff that was new to me, but it all seemed to fit and work!
It's a little thing, but it was only when I got to spawning the enemies that I realised I was going to have to sort the sprites in a way so that things with a higher Y value would appear above other entities. This caused me some stress as I initially wasn't sure how to do it and thought it would cause the game to look very janky! It turned out to be as easy as giving the Entity base class a sortOrder property, having entities set their own sort order based on Y position every frame and then sorting the Entity list by the sortOrder property! Easy!
I also think the art was done really well and all tied together great. When Ollie sent me over the Ubergine graphics I knew we were onto something. 😂 It seems like people really responded to the art which is a great feeling. 😊
Also this was @curleyrach's first time ever doing pixel art and she picked it up really fast. This is definitely going to become a new hobby for us both. 🙂
The music turned out cool too and I was happy to have an excuse to whip out my banjo! 🪕🎶

What went wrong
One thing I feel could have been better were some of the sound effects. I woke up early Monday morning very tired and recorded those so I think some of them are a little lackluster but oh well. 😄
I took a shortcut with the particles also. I have programmed a particle system in Monogame before but I was a little scared to try it in a jam. So instead I opted to use this great tool Particle FX Designer by @Code Manu. Its a great tool that allows for quick output of nice looking particle effects to sprite sheets. So all the particles in the game are actually animations played with a random rotation value and some other modifiers to make them look different. 🙊
Another issue I had was my UI. I am scaling the screen for fullscreen and different screen sizes by outputting the render to a texture and then scaling the texture up with ratio applied. This worked great for gameplay as it allowed me to program in a consistently sized world. The problem was that this meant that my UI layer was actually very small in pixels so I couldn't use hi-res fonts as they would look blurry! 😢 Lesson learned for next time, I will be splitting the UI into a separate thing and scaling it differently to the game world to fix this issue!

Conclusion
We're in a very strange time a the moment and I didn't realise how much I needed to output something! It has been extremely satisfying to finish this project, be happy with the result, and have a really positive response from the community! Thanks for all the reviews so far! ♥♥

so it has been a week now, i know... but hey, better late then never for some self reflection! first off i need to say! i have been working on my latest patch under the original file name, so when i uploaded my latest version to itch it overwrote the original upload so i had to reupload the LD release, but now it says i uploaded it today.... have mercy!!!!

But as you can see, and if you have faith, the original release was last edited a couple minutes before the deadline...
the game concept is pretty basic, you controll timmy who is trying to keep his new friend Rock alive from all the monsters trying to create unbalance in the universe. it's a 2d platformer wich i havent done in ages so i had to revisit some old game concepts wich i had forgot how to do properly. so a lot of time was spent fixing some pretty basic bugs and getting core mechanics working.
in the end i was pleased with the original release, but it felt bare-boned, but everything was working as i wanted, i had one silly bug wich halted re-playability by having my main room where the "game" happens being ticked as persistent, so when you returned to it from the intro scene it had saved all the instances from the previous run, wich caused it to end immediately... fixed by a tick box haha...
i have had a hard time finding a lot of time to work on it this week, it has been hectic, unbelievable right? but i managed what i set out to do this week - a couple features, but hey, it's better then nothing right? haha...
Rock Need YOU

now i'm finally going to have a short nap, and then, what i have been wating for... CHECKING LD ENTRIES!!!!

Tired of downloading game that give you a feel-good sensation and make you see la vie en rose?

Yes, these fingers are skewered on branches.
I added a webbuild for my game: Blockemon https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/blockemon

I really appreciate everyone who plays it and rates it. (so please do! )
Let me know if you have any problems with the web version, the windows download version plays super smooth on any (windows) computer (as far as I am aware), hopefully the web version is just as good.

After a longer than expected time I managed to add HTML5 to the list of platforms in For Seraphina. So if you haven't tried it yet, i'd love to hear your feedback~

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/for-seraphina
I mean, it only results in more people having to rate the game and the ratings number on the game to be an uneven, jarred float.
On a similar note, why don't people opt-out of categories they know they didn't create their game for? I saw a lot of games which are clearly not intended to be funny in any way, yet they still have the Humor rating. All it does is it decreases their overall rating.
Please play and rate, I'm interested in your feedback  And I'll gladly play and rate your game too!

The dust has settled and I finally had time to think about what the hell happened a week ago. LD46 was my debut as a pixelartist/graphics-something person [1], so I had to learn many things on the fly - tools, techniques, animation basics, just to name a few. Thankfully, I had some cards up my sleeve that kept me sane and I wanted to share them with you.
But first I wanted to thank you all for >30 votes on our game Just a Stroll. It means a lot to us! Every comment and rating is very appreciated. You're the best! :bird:

And, last but not least: - Aseprite - it's a no brainer for creating pixel art. Intuitive and powerful tool that I was able to learn in less than a day. It didn't freeze on 1k+ frames of animation, it earned my respect.
I hope you found some of these tips useful. It's a tutorial from a newbie perspective - I just present the 1% you should know but, hey, it's a start!
Good luck with your creative endeavors,

Hello Jammers!
We're playing your games live on Twitch. If you’d like your entry featured, kindly drop it in our form or join us in chat! We love having devs in chat with us and we'll prioritize those games, but we also highlight every game in case you can’t join live.
Note: We were unable to participate in the Jam this time so we cannot officially rate anyone, but we would still love to play your game and get you some feedback!
Need ratings/comments? If you play my game and leave a comment, I'll be sure to play yours and leave a rating/feedback for you! (Assuming there isn't, yknow, hundreds of games or something). My game is Wave Machine, a rhythm heaven inspired microgame, and it only takes about 3 minutes to play through completely. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about it!

Play the game now if you missed it! -> https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/ice-ice-baby <-

The concept of 'Missing Pieces' revolves around the priceless things that bring meaning to our life. The playable character in 'Missing Pieces' is the player him/herself who is looking for those things which once made him/her feel alive. We tried to narrow it down to the three most wonderful things in life. Art, music, and friendship.

The first level is a reference to our aimless superfun childhood drawing habit. I am pretty much sure we all drew what we liked with all the colors in the world. Maybe as time went on, we forgot how much we enjoyed drawing and paint the world with the colors of our imagination. In the game, your past-self gets back the first missing piece as he walks around the tiles drawing the shape of a heart.

The second level is a reference to our love of listening to music as well as playing it. I, personally remember the first time I tried to play guitar. After some time suddenly I realized that I was playing the first two notes of Für Elise, a famous musical piece composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Through many trials and errors, finally, I figured out the first few notes of that masterpiece. And it created such a wave of joy!
I am sure many of you can relate to this story. So in the game, your past-self gets back the second missing piece after some trial and error, each time coming to the first notes and rework the notes after, finally creating the first line of Für Elise.

The third level is a reference to our lost friendships. When you start playing this level it seems you have no clue how to reach your friend who is at a distance. And when you start finding your way, you finally see that the solution was just around the corner. After that, you get back the last missing piece after you re-establish the connection with your friend.

Has something changed about the smart balance calculations? This doesn't seem quite right. Here is a pic of me and my "position neighbour"...

Also, do all plays of a team count towards the ratings/feedbacks given? If so, isn't that quite unfair since we're competing for the same visibility on the page? Was just wondering since I saw very little compo games on the top of the games list. And over 25% of the games should be compo...
Playing Ludum Dare games on stream for the next couple hours! Come hang out and send me your games to play!

Hi there everyone,
I hope you all had a great Ludam Dare like myself. This is my 10th game jam, but first Ludam Dare and first "solo" jam. I'll get to the quotes later.
I found out about this Ludam Dare the Friday night after it had officially begun. When I saw the theme of "Keep it Alive", I made a joke about making a tamagachi style game, but with a plant instead. I thought about it and went to my asset packs in Unreal and realized I hate a house plant assets pack and a house asset pack. All I needed was a watering can, which my friend offered to make. I then began on my "solo" venture. I didn't make everything from scratch. I was using asset packs and a few assets from a friend, but that was ok. If I didn't have these things, I probably wouldn't have participated. Instead I decided to approach something I've never done and came out the other side feeling really good about this little game. I love seeing the work of the compo jam and seeing those people shine, but it was also good not feeling the pressure of the normal jam and just making a game.
I got the basics up and running pretty quickly, but the biggest challenge I needed to tack was, "How do I have it so this game plays even when it's turned off?" There was a lot of data to handle to save and load properly and keeping track of time passed when the game turned off and adjust things accordingly. Luckily the internet is a great resource and I was able to find little bits here and there of information that I was able to piece together to figure it out. Now that I figured it out all was great! Well no, there were a lot of bugs. While I believe I was structuring gameplay object correctly, I was having a really hard time saving them and loading them correctly. This took up many hours of debugging and I'm glad I did it. I've learned so much more about saving/loading than I ever would have otherwise. This right here is the main reason I love game jams. It gives opportunities to push yourself to learn something new and I sure did here.
So the main systems were done, but I didn't have a lot of idle/interaction systems. I only had 48 hours to really work on this so there wasn't a lot of time. I figured out some basic fun interactions, but I really wish I could have fleshed this out more.
Also building UI is hard. Luckily I had a main menu asset that I could modify to get that all handled, but all the UI for the game needed to be figured out as I was building it. Luckily I built some pretty crude buttons early on to get everything working in a prototype, but UX and UI is a lot of work to really make it smooth. I wish I could have focused here more to flesh out the experience, but I got enough there I think was decently approachable. Not getting a more robust interactive UI did kill the one thing I wish I could have done for the jam, and that was unlocks. Idle games are all about progression, but doing progression right means needing to message it properly. I might have been able to do this, but I didn't plan ahead enough for it, so I took the alternative route and gated things by price.
In the end I have a weird little game I'm proud of that I never thought I would have built. I've gotten great feedback from so many of you and I'm glad so many enjoyed it. I hope this little post mortem was insightful and I look forward to doing more Ludam Dares in the future.
Guide the last spacecraft from Earth through the immensity of the Universe in search of a new home for the few survivors of an Earth unable to sustain life. Until you reach your unknown destination, keep the crew hydrated, fed, heated and don't let the ship drift without power. Keep an eye out for radar. It tells you where to find the resources you need to support yourself until you find a new home for humanity.

But our PC Version got even better!
What changed? - Keyboard notes that have to be held now display their note length properly and also recognize their release time correctly, making things a lot easier. - Drums got new notes to play, making the game more balanced. - Did some visual improvements on the keyboard lighting. - Made some changes in how a well played riff affects your total audience satisfaction. - Added a borderless windowed mode.
What are our future plans on the game? - Create a selection of multiple tracks to play. - Implement the concept of optional notes. (Give bonus if played but no penalty if missed) - Some sort of music sheet to let you know what to play in the long run. - Maybe some sort of visual recommendation on how to place your fingers on the keyboard for each instrument.
Despite this being a less than ideal LDJam for me, I was happy to see that my game gathered the needed 20 votes and it will be eligable for a score. I would like to thank everybody for this.

Hey, we uploaded a Linux Version for Hive Preserver. However, we cannot test it ourselves. So if you want to give it a try and give us some feeback, we would be very happy about it

I successfully submitted my game for the jam but I was not able to make many levels. Now I had made more levels and I want to update my game can I do it?
I have uploded my game on itch.io .
Thanks
sorry for bad english
I'll be running the second installment of my LD46 streams today! We got through 20 games in 4 hours yesterday - lets get through another bunch tonight! I'll also be joined on voice my @ElysiaGriffin to give commentary (and judge your button feedback) during the stream!
I'll be streaming for about 3-4 hours, so I'll be giving no longer than 10 minutes per game in order to try out a larger quantity of games. There is a good 20 games in queue at the moment, HOWEVER - I only play the game if the dev is in chat, so many of those who submitted yesterday are likely to not be in chat so we'll be burning through the queue quite quickly at the start of stream I'd say.

If you're interested in our LD46 entry Bunnurse, feel free to check out the Game Page

!Thanks to all of you that gave us a little of your time and came to test our little game!
We are so happy that so many people found our game fun, people that saw potential, people that gave us tips, that gave all this support!
This is our team first GameJam and we can't express how we did NOT expect all of this from a GameJam, with a game made by college students, and how it all worked out!
We're thinking on continuing this game in the summer for it to be our first polished and finalized game!
I hope everyone is enjoying this Ludum Dare that removed a bit of the COVID problem >-<
We are trully happy and inspired! Feel free to follow us if you want to see our future projects!

Hey guys, it's our first time jamming and also our first time ever finishing a game. We're really thankful for the comments we have already received and we have released a quick hot-fix addressing some of the issues but we would love to get even more feedback from the whole community.

Me and Issac had a great time making this but can't decide if its worth turning into a full game or not. Perhaps a fun little phone game?
If you haven't played it already please check it out and let us know what you think!
