Ludum Dare 46April 17–20, 2020

CURSED SWORDS & SLASHING

cover.png

Take on the quest of saving the world by destroying the cursed, blood-thirsty sword you were destined to wield. Be careful, though - failure to feed the sword will cause it to consume you. It is crucial that you keep yourself alive, even if it means sacrificing others, as there will be noone to break this cycle of pain and destruction without you!

Ludum Dare 46 Wallpaper!

The first time I ever participated in Ludum Dare, someone made a wallpaper that included the icons of every submission. I thought it’d be a cool idea to bring that back, so I wrote some scripts to download everyones cover images and convert them into a giant wallpaper! This image has both the jam and compo in one- over 4500 entries! Can you find yours?

“Tell a Fairy Tale” Postmortem

Concepting

At the event’s start, the theme was announced: “Keep It Alive.” This reminded me of a quote I once heard:

When do fairy tales cease to be real? When people stop believing in them.

I presented this to my team and we decided to run with it, believing it would lead us to create a unique entry. And it did – there isn’t another submission like ours despite the event having over 10,000 participants.

We settled on a design where you play as Tinker Bell in an orphanage. You fly in front of children to inspire them while avoiding the staff – if they capture you, the game is over. This was to fit within the time constraints. The idea I originally had was a stealth dialogue (yes, you read that right) entry where you play as an elder employee secretly trying to tell fairy tales to the children while not getting caught by the other workers. The stealth dialogue idea still intrigues me as I haven’t played such a game before. Maybe I will create it someday – just need to find (or become) an experienced dialogue writer.

Production

I’ve never worked with the cel shaded aesthetic before, but our fairy tale idea seemed like the perfect setting to try it. If you don’t know the difference between standard and cel shading (often called toon), see this:

standardemvs/emtoon.jpg

Cel shading, as the name implies, comes from shaders, not the modeling of the objects themselves. Right now my 3D artistry consists of hard surface (no organics), so I had to get the characters from asset packs online.

Wallemwith/emmodifiableemmiddle/emcolor.PNG

Door_frame.PNG

I spent most of my time on the level design. I haven’t done an indoor environment before, so this was a major learning experience in architectural design and where to be structurally unrealistic in order to make indoor flying feel less cramped.

First iteration of indoor level design using cel shading. It’s obvious my lighting needs adjustment:

Firstemcel/emshading_test.png

After brightening the main light, adding a soft ambient counter-light, and setting up postprocessing with LUT:

Celemshading/emplusemlighting/emplus_LUT.png

We used IK to create Tinker Bell’s animations. Our main character has 1 forward flight and 2 idle motions. Unfortunately, LD's blog system doesn't let me upload videos (and I don't want to put them on YouTube). See them in my blog version of this post.

Retrospective

My time allocation looked approximately like this:

  • Concepting: 2 hours
  • Asset Production / Iteration: 36 hours
  • Programming: 5 hours
  • Ice Skating / Stretching: 4 hours
  • Random Breaks: 6 hours
  • Sleep: 16 hours (I didn’t sleep from Sunday to Monday)
  • Testing / Tweaking / Building: 3 hours

I don’t know how many jams I’ve done, but I’m seeing a pattern with all of them: They barely get done within the timeframe and I don’t allocate enough hours to testing the gameplay. I believe it’s a scoping fault where I estimate (with good accuracy nowadays) what I can build within the timeframe, not what I can build and extensively test in that period. For my next Ludum Dare, I intend to mentally subtract 12 hours from the jam duration when planning. Hopefully this causes me to reduce my scope so I can iterate more.

As for our entry, here is some notable feedback we received:

feedback1.png

feedback2.png

Moving Forward

I won’t be adding this game to my portfolio, though it is still searchable online. I learned a lot about cel shading and lighting this weekend, and I intend to implement this aesthetic again in a future entry with greater confidence. In the meantime, play the game if you haven’t, and share with us your harshest criticisms:

Next month, I’m hosting the GameDev.tv community jam. We have over 500 signed up so far, and I’m looking forward to the creative ideas participants come up with. If you’re a beginner gamedev, join us! We have many people in the forum looking for teammates :)

First attempt at an FPS... "Operation SOL-3"!

GIF-1.gif

It's been a while since I've made a proper 3D game for a jam or otherwise, and this time around I thought I'd give it a try again! After considering a few different ideas, I eventually landed on attempting to make an intense retro-style first person shooter.

I spent most of my time in the jam working on the gameplay mechanics, and on making the combat feel fun and responsive. Lots of trails, flashes, camera shake, and impact effects! A lot of the 3D assets come from the Unity Asset Store, though everything else is my work. I whipped up some cool synthwave music, layered sounds to create the effects I needed, etc.

It was definitely a crazy yet fun experience participating in Ludum Dare once again, and I'm pretty proud of what I was able to pull off. The connection to the theme is fairly weak, but I think the gameplay worked out as well as I could've hoped.

Let me know what you think! This was my first attempt at making an FPS game, and especially within the 3 day time-frame. I'll be starting to play & rate other entries tomorrow, so remember to leave a comment so I can check out yours!

An idea that didn't actually made it

During our brainstorm we had an idea to make a Run minigame with your Bro, where you need to chat with your bro while you run. Sometimes your hands would touch bromance style.

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to create this minigame. So stay tuned because we are making a Post Ludum Dare :)

The Dark Cave - 2D Procedural Animation Tutorial

Hi everyone!

I've had a few people ask about how I approached the procedural animation for the spider creature in my game so I decided to write a blog post about it!

It's quite lengthy and a few of the gifs were too big to post on here, so I've hosted it on my website instead.

https://www.tomstephensondeveloper.co.uk/post/2d-procedural-animation-in-unity

It covers:

  • Rigging The Legs And Inverse Kinematics
  • Keeping the feet on the ground
  • Animation curves
  • Some code for movement

ANNNND we're DONE!

Screen Shot 2020-04-24 at 8.45.57 PM.png

Heya all! Super stoked to be done with this project! The core gameplay and first two levels were completed in 48 hours for the ludum dare competition, and now I've finished the next two levels, added a boss fight, more storyline, better mechanics, way more features, and even a credits scene.

I was SERIOUSLY pushing the limit of the pico-8's token limit when this was published, and I had to do a lot of refactoring before I was able to export to html5, but it was so worth it.

This is the first game I've completed in 14 years, and the last one just didn't hold a candle to this one's scope, even though realistically it still is a very small and casual game made in exactly one week.

It's also my first PICO-8 game.

Here are some statistics by the end

  • 2,450 brand new lines of lua code
  • Two individual full-length music tracks created
  • 16 sound effects generated
  • 22 animated sprites drawn

This was my first large project using the component-entity pattern in a project outside of Unity, and I'm proud of my ability to pull it off successfully. I learned a lot about better ways to structure my code.

I also learned a lot about better ways to check for and structure collisions, which was important for the BBY push mechanic.

Thanks to all that have played my game demo so far. I hope some of you find the time to try out the full game!

Please check it out on itch! You won't regret it :D https://lambdanaut.itch.io/bbys

Another round of bug fixes for LAST HUMAN!

Keyboard Cowboys Recommend...

keyboardcowboys.jpg

It's that time again!

Over the past week, the Keyboard Cowboys (coleslaughter, ruddiculous, ruddgasm, and alphabetasoup) have been playing and rating as many games as we can! Already we've found some stand-out entries, that we'd love to share with y'all!

Now then, in no particular order, here's a list of games that have really stood out to us:

Letter to Thomas

Team: @louiejams

lettertothomas.jpg

Letter to Thomas is a short little narrative adventure game with a compelling story and seriously impressive visuals, all put together by a single person, which is still blowing our minds!!

Keep Our Mother Alive

Team: @daregb, @soyrandom

keepourmother.jpg

Simple, yet gorgeous, Keep Our Mother Alive is a fun little experience bursting with style and humor. Definitely a unique entry that brings more than a few chuckles as the plot progresses!

Mega Kinetic

Team: @blacksheepza, @add-an-a

megakinetic.jpg

Mega Kinetic is a bombastic physics-based action game with a cutesy toony art style. Keeping your little alien buddy alive very quickly gets chaotic and fun as it launches around the arena at high speeds!

Hive Preserver

Team: @for-science, @arcticmattekar

hivepreserver.jpg

Hive Preserver is one ridiculously well-polished game with top-notch level design to boot. It's kind of crazy to think this was all done in a weekend! This game feels complete, with a definitive beginning, middle, and end, and a difficulty that ramps up super naturally. Definitely check this one out!

Disco Let's Go!

Team: @ariake81

discoletsgo.jpg

Disco Let's Go straight-up should be getting more attention. The premise is simple, the vibe is spot-on, and the need to obsess over high scores is real. This is easily one of the unique concepts we've seen so far, and right now it's still looking for 20 ratings! Help 'em out, if you can!

The Bloodhaven Academy Dragon Club

Team: @nota, @nothing, @truefaux

dragonclub.jpg

This game is nuts. There's so much going on in Bloodhaven Academy Dragon Club, from randomly generated monsters, a turn-based battle system, unique character sprites and battle themes, a funny, tongue-in-cheek narrative, and so many monster stats!! This game really has it all, and we're super jealous...

Doin' It Live

Team: @sugarsores

doinitlive.jpg

This game just sticks out immediately the moment you see it, especially in motion. Doin' It Live is brimming with silly personality, and simple yet super fresh gameplay. This one's a quick pick-up, and once you dip your toes in, you'll be smitten with just how much personality the creator was able to inject into its character models and images (by themselves!!)

The Dragon's Curse

Team: @abyss, @james-kusardi, @horus, @aditya-kumar

dragonscurse.jpg

You've probably already seen this game floating around some of the top LD pages already. Truth be told, we like to highlight games that aren't already getting the recognition they deserve, but the folks behind The Dragon's Curse have been going above and beyond to give back to their community with super thoughtful feedback and already over 100 games rated (!!) so we feel that they at least deserve the mention. With some of the sharpest writing we've seen this jam, and some of the most impressive artwork, this game is absolutely worth the few minutes of your time to play it. Show these guys some love!

...And that's all for now!

We've been really impressed with what we've been playing this rating season, and we've been especially super ecstatic about the phenomenal feedback we've been receiving for our game, Wayward! It has been absolutely melting our hearts hearing about how people have been connecting with the game, and we love every last one of your insights.

We will be continuing to plug away at more games as the weeks progress, and time permitting, we would love to write up another one of these in the future!

'Til next time! :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

We hit 100 downloads!

We recently made a trailer but it was posted during a lot of blog activity so I don't think many saw it. Have a gander!

Thank you all for the great feedback!!!

We're really glad that so many of you are liking Turtle Daddy! We honestly didn't think it would be this positive. We're looking forward to expanding on this game post-jam! :v:

Your feedback has been noted!

We're working on a post-jam build!

We've been getting a lot of positive feedback about LAMPS but also some negative. Some people are getting lost, and don't know what they're supposed to be doing. NewDialogueSystem_Sml.gif

That's why we've decided to include a system in the new version that gives some backstory to the lamp shop, and will hopefully help players understand the core mechanic of Keeping the Light Alive

We've also implemented some... more SPOOKY additions to the game... so watch out for those too ;P

Broken Threads --- A Post-Mortem

banner_8.png

Hey everybody! Now that we're a week into rating, I decided to write up a brief retrospective on my project.

Goal and overview

For the past few Compos, I've generally done pretty well in Graphics, Audio, and Fun. This time, my goal was to focus on one of the more niche categories (most likely Humor, Mood, or Innovation) and aim for the top 100 in that category.

After the theme announcement happened, I decided to focus in on Mood. Rather than pouring all my time into animation and mechanics, I got a pretty simple prototype and framework together, then tried to create some characters, dialogue, and the hint of an in-game world.

tetra.png

The good

Here are the things I think went particularly well: - The scope: I did a pretty good job maximizing return on time investment this event. I did enough graphics to create the right feeling, then filled in the gaps with particle effects, modular animation, and some nice scrolling backgrounds. - The onboarding: While the game itself is pretty simple, I think I did a pretty good job introducing the player to its mechanics, and the various enemy types, as the game progressed. I not only had a tutorial, but it was within the story and dialogue! - The twist: No spoilers in this post, but it's pretty twisty.

parity.png

The bad

Here are some things I could have done better: - The theme: My interpretation of the theme was pretty weak, especially after I got a few revisions in. I eventually settled for the low-hanging fruit of controlling a shield around a vulnerable player. - The visuals: While the visuals fit the mood of the game fairly well and I necessarily had to cut some scope to make room for other work (like four music tracks... oof), I still think my graphics were overall less standout this event than some previous ones. - The player character specifically: You're a green circle. I drew a green circle. That's peak art, right there.

Conclusion

I think, in general, I met my goal for this event. I made something very different than any of my past games and experimented in the aesthetic, audio, and overall tone. I think that top 100 in Mood is within the realm of possibility, but with 1300 Compo entries there's going to be some stiff competition.

If you want to play my game, you can find it on my game page.

Have a great rating season, everybody!

Time for sleep now!

Anyone want a little extra detailed feedback on their entry?

Drop a link to your entry here and I will give it a play/rating, along with a paragraph or two of what I liked and what I thought could be improved. I'll prioritize entries with fewer existing ratings but I should be able to get around to everyone eventually. Windows or HTML5 is fine - no installers please.

I'd also appreciate it if you could give feedback on my own entry: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-empty-cone , but you're under no obligation or pressure to do so.

Edit: yes I'm still doing this, please feel free to comment below. Just don't expect me to be able to get around to it right away, lol.

My favorite game so far

In tht last days I played already many games. I liked many, but this is my absolute favorite so far: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/have-mercy You try to hurt but not to kill enemies in a turn based combat. Sounds and graphics are really good and the game is well balanced. Feel free to try it out. It needs still some ratings!

Titles You Should Play! #3 || LD46

Before I go out on another gaming spree, I thought I should give some shoutouts to great games I played to keep the fire GOING!

The Ludum Dare Flame ldflame.png Maybe not as extreme as those guys though :D. Seriously though, how cool would it be if @tobiasw 's text-MMO would become something like the Orgrimmar Auction House of the Ludum Dare O: (with that I mean the central, social hub)

Aviarium aviarium.png What is it with bird simulators? I kinda really, really, really dig them for some reason and I don't know why :'D

Mr. Cheesy mrcheesy.png Very Gouda game! Simple, yes, but so enjoyable!

Tablet Force tabletforce.png Myself? Not much of a Tablet-guy, really. Except you talk about this game here!

Tumbleweed tumbleweed.png Ye, I figure you probably already played it, but how would I not mention it in these little lists of mine?

If you have any recommendations for me, please tell me! I'm always eager to find more great games! <3

Debugging session was fun!

Cover cop2y.PNG

We had a lot of fun especially with the wife throwing mechanism! (We don’t encourage anything violent at all in real life) The bugs that showed out in while developing were really hilarious! And we didn’t know whether to stress out over the bugs to fix them or play around with the player and the buggy wife and wolves just for fun even though we were short on time!

Just love your wife dearly and save her from any danger in all worlds be it real or virtual!

Want to try a little short platformer game ?

I'm going to an hour or two play session so give me games to try

Dr. JavaSaurus and Java Jr. Are looking for your childfriendly LD game !

Goodmorning everyone ! :D

Me and my 4 year old are bonding heavily this week over Ludum Dare Games ! :D We've even done a couple of Twitch streams, which were completely amazing and fun. However, as a parent, I need some time to pre-screen them to make sure they're appropriate for his age.

So rather than ME browsing through the thousands of submissions, why don't YOU tell me about your game! We could provide you with a timestamp on our VODs !

And offcourse, having you play our game would be nice :) Leave a comment so we know you played it, we can then decide to bump you up on our list as a reward :D
