We made the first iteration of the game for LUDUM DARE 46 game jam. We had 3 days to do it and finished it 10 minutes before the hard deadline.

We had so much fun working on it Grégoire and I, it went so smoothly from beginning to end and we were so happy about the result, its potential, that we decided to make a long, better version of it. A proper game this time. 4 days after the jam we're back at it transforming what was a snippit into something that is now 10 times bigger. We'll post here what we sarted with, our thought process, what we decided to improve upon and how we built it.

For the game jam version of the game we went for something simple with a square screen, dividing the ladscape into tiles for no particular reason other than for being able to decide what amount of different land we wanted the chicken to stroll through. Since every kind of land had a certain kind of traps and hurdles attached to it, thinking in section was making it simple to figure out.

We started with twelve tiles of land, each the size of the screen.

i7OkYU.png

This was the base for the backgrounds, I would (if I had the time - since I had to work simultaneously on 2 freelance job during the game jam) add props on it to mak the backgrounds richer. I didn't have th time I wanted to dadicate to the props but we made do. he plan for the background was:

  1. One square of base backdrop land

  2. one layer of props and traps

  3. one layer of eye candy (namely moving flowers for the most part)

  4. Some shadow being cast on the square from some sort of vertical structure we don't see

  5. A vignette that would both concentrate the attention like a soft spotlight on the heros but would also dim the background under their feet so the characters would pop out better in the frame.

  6. on top of that a layer with the charathers and their shadows (shadows were additive between themselves at the time, now they blend thanks to Grégoire)

  7. and, at the end if we have time ( which we didn't) was to add an extra layer of eye candy like smoke, and ash rain, that kind of thing. But we managed to add little extra deails like cigarette butts, and a few rad kill tin cans.

bUtb19.png

iIede_.png

tLGAsI.png

3ftBg1.png

Every animation was super minimalist, literally 2 or 3 frames. And it worked pretty well for the most part. The chicken needs more work in erms of movement, but that was ok for the jam.

So we ended up with something looking like his very quickly :

DZqPei.png

Now that we knew where we were going the rest was JUST GET IT DONE.

SOOOO. Today here's what I'm doing today -- and what I've been doing for the past couple of days:

I've been doodling the 120 background panels of the long version of the game. I should be able to finish the basis tonight. The landscape will be varied from fields to cities. Now with that we can start adjusting the story, the events, the increasing level of difficulty and know what goes where, when it happens and how.

OMG Earned first bit from a game

Hi everyone, someone from here just donated a dolar to my game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/survivalgo. I am over the moon now that this bit is my first earning from game development. Now, I'm more encouraged to continue the project. I wanted to share this achievement with you.

TumbleWeed - An article from GameCurator about the game

capsule_BannerAlpha.png

This morning I did my addictive routine of checking if there was any news about the game on internet. I found a gameplay video of Tumbleweed on YouTube and there was a link to an article on the description.

It was an excellent discovery as the article from Sebastian Standke is really enthusiast about our game ! The whole team is totally enjoyed by this first article about the game, se we want to thank GameCurator for this !

It made my day ! :sunny:

P.S. Thanks for those who have already voted and gave me your suggestions! This is the first game jam I participated in where I actually want to update the game (especially to fix the stupid mistake of not looping the BGM ), but right now because of National Service I'm isolated from my main PC that I used to make my submission, and can only return after 3 more weeks. Hopefully I still have the drive to update this game after the 3 weeks, but till then, once again, THANK YOU!!!

P.P.S. Comment any browser games for me to play and rate! Because of the aforementioned isolation, I'm using my mobile data to play and rate games, so I can't download anything

Post Jam Progress 1

Hi guys,

I was finally able to settle on an aesthetic decision of whether to add in textures for the models or leave it as just plain colors. I decided to keep it the same as the one in the jam (Plain Colors) as it shows it clear to the player instead of making it pretty I will keep it minimal and simple.

progress2.jpg

Other progress I made: - Mechanics changes with how the heart of trees are represented - Mechanics of the blocks - Design decision for gameplay loop

Cheers!

Play Interstellar Connection on mobile!

@rose and I just released a post-jam version of Interstellar Connection, our narrative puzzle game about helping a lonely spaceship pilot make a connection. We added a couple of enhancements, like endless puzzle mode, but the most interesting one was adapting the game for smaller screens so it can be played on mobile devices.

Interstellar Connection was built directly in HTML, so most changes were CSS. I redesigned the layout from two side-by-side panels into tabs, and added an automatic tab switch in the JS code to transition from puzzle to story and back.

narrow2.gif

The game is not strictly responsive - changing the browser width doesn't change the style. Instead, I do a one-time check of the window width when the game loads. If the width is below 960 px, I enable the stylesheet for the narrow view, and that width is also factored into game logic, like whether the relay network is generated as 6x4 or 4x6.

You can see it in action by adjusting your browser width, then refreshing. (Or by opening the game on your phone!)

switch4 cut.gif

I was really excited to tackle this. Since Interstellar Connection is a short, casual browser game, having it be accessible to people browsing on mobile seemed like a great way to expand our audience. And it was interesting to work on - @rose is normally the UI expert of the team, so for me to take this on was a great challenge!

I'd love any feedback on the mobile version as well as general feedback on the game! Please play and rate if you haven't!

Notes of a happy first timer

First timer here. Taking part in LD is an awesome experience. Always had trouble getting things done but the 48 hours limit forced me this time and I am amazed how much I can do in very short time if I have to. I have three small children and bunch of real life stuff to do all the time and I expected to have no more net dev time than half of it. That was a good estimation as according to my timelapse video I had spent about 26 hours with the game. About three and a half hours of that was wasted working on my initial concept and engine which then I changed to the one which GOLKIA get built upon: A game of life simulation sandbox.

I started with Corona SDK which seemed promising, I saw a talk by John Romero who suggested it, coding is done in Lua which I get used to with LOVE and PICO-8 before and I tried to give it a shot until I realized that it has no game loop in its classic form and yet it can get forced to work like that it seemed too messy to go into it as I wanted to get to actual game development. Also, I had to discard my original concept. During the theme voting final I figured out concepts for every possible themes and up and downvoted accordingly. For Keep it alive I had the following note: Life automata with aging cells.

At the start I looked on my note and it was far from enough to start with. This was a lession to the future that the concepts should be made to the point I can develop the game immediately after the start. Yet I changed in time. I remembered that Conway died in the COVID-19 epidemic and I thought there is no better time to make a hommage to him than now. Initially I planned to gave it a twist with more states, some being power sources and others being different kind of live forms like domains).

However I first needed an effective Game of Life simulation, once that is done, the states are not too hard to apply later. I then came to the idea of making the video card to evaluate the game. Before this game, I only made a shader which applied certain palettes on the whole game screen. This was different but I switched to the engine I made that before: LOVE.

My productivity got boosted and soon I ended up a shader applied to a 8bit grayscale depth canvas (there was no 1bit option) and the end result being copied to another one which is shown to the user. Effectively the whole game is running on that low-res image. After resolved multiple issues, it worked like a charm, on high FPS without lags.

My development machine is a 2011 made IBM Thinkpad T420. I attached a 2560x1440 monitor onto it which really pushes its video card to its limits and I usually have to play games windowed. Now in the play+rate period, I see many trivial and plain games to get laggy and unplayable slow on this machine, most of them are made with Unity. My game runs perfectly on full screen. This is the reason I like to develop on weak computers: It assures that the users will not have performance issues.

Drawing on the live evaluated Game of Life world was really satisfying and I was glad that the game was good enough to apply. Even my wife tried it and liked it which made me very happy as she do not play video games at all excluding some casual Sokoban, Match-3, or Tetris.

I had 3 hours left. I rapidly applied the pause/resume and reset features and changed the borders from continous to fixed, all of these were trivial changes and gave a lot to the user experience. I made a quick list of possible features and ordered them by importance: zoom/pan; speedup/down; increase/decrease brush size. Went for the zoom which the game really deserved and with all my efforts I tried to make it work but I failed and had to publish the game without that feature. My mistake was that I want it to work perfectly instead of decently. As the mouse pointer is also a painter tool, I wanted to keep it above the same position while zooming. I could definiately get the zoom feature done in time without this and it would be fine enough together with panning. The post compo version works like intended but I had to think on it for a long time.

So, it was deadline and I published the game without the ability to zoom. But hey, it was a very good feeling as I really liked the game!

Golly, which is the most feature heavy Game of Life software stops while you draw, although it can handle very huge GOL constructs without problem. I do not stress tested GOLKIA but I assume it would be also fine with much bigger maps as well. Still, it is more a children's than an enginer's tool and that is more than fine. I tagged it as educational on itch.io.

I might continue to work on it to make a released game of it.

Was a plesure my first Ludum Dare!

Opinions on graphical style for post-jam version

Based on some of the feedback I got, I quickly created a new graphical style for YMGYPBVF (I regret that acronym).

The existing Vector art (which eventually would have shading/highlights put on): Scrn4.PNG

A possible new hand-drawn version: scrn4-new.PNG

Which approach do people think looks better and suits the gameplay (sliding puzzle)?

Updated!

Thanks to everyone that's rated and commented on our game so far. We have taken your comments into consideration and made a few fixes.

Patch Notes (v1.0.1):

Bugs - Fixed the protraits not being clickable.

Playability - Selecting a patient that already has a professional attending to them will now swap the professional with the new one. - Points are now awarded immediately when a patient is discharged, and not when the patient has left the building. - Professionals will no longer compete for a roaming spot. Also moved the spots a little to prevent patients from getting stuck between a bed and a professional. - Increased the professionals' obstacle avoidance, so they shouldn't walk into each other as much anymore. - The incident icon will now change as the patient moves into different tiers - The difficulty curve has been adjusted to make it easier to get into the game.

Ludum Dare 46 Retrospective: The Next Generation

Here is the retrospective (postmortem is so morbid) of my entry to Ludum Dare 46: The Next Generation.

thumbnail.png

That post contains my brainstorming process, barking up the wrong tree for 24 hours, almost dropping out, and turning a not-fun Game of Life sandbox into a kinda-fun puzzle game. It also contains a timelapse of what developing the game looked like from start to finish, and a list of everything I googled over the 48 hours it took to make the game.

I've appreciated all of the comments so far, and if anybody is looking for another game to play (works on web, mobile, and desktop), check it out here.!

Please export for web if you can

Hi! Here's a PSA:

Guys. Please export your games for web.

If you used unity it's really easy (if sometimes a bit slow), just change the build settings to html5, and I saw one game that I know was made with Godot that had a web version so it should be doable (for gamemaker you need to buy the export plugin though, I'm sorry).

My reasoning: - I personnally will only download a game without web version if I really really really want to play it, while I totally will play a mediocre-looking game with a web version in hopes of being surprised. - Half the posts asking for games to review here ask for a web version specifically. - For my game, we had two downloads (both mac and windows builds were available), and now 47 ratings and 76 browser plays.

If you haven't exported for web and can, do it and I guarantee you will see the difference (if you either have a positive ratings balance score for people to play your game, or intend to post here to boost your game's views).

I know not bothering to download a build is laziness on my part, but if I'm gonna try fifty games, I damn well reserve the right to be lazy.

PS: I'd be interested in other people's download stats (available on itchio in Edit Games>Analytics) vs ratings (when they have both web and a downloadable build) to further (or contradict) what I say here (please tell for which platforms the downloadable builds are).

Cacophony Hotfix #1

Hello!

We have been continuing development on Cacophony our roguelike dungeon crawler game made for Ludum Dare 46, in this time one of the priorites we had was fixing the many bugs and UI issues that we ran out of time to do during the game jam!

Our first patch is now live on itch.io and is playable in your browser

Fixes include:

-Better (see: actually visible) icons for equipment slots in the inventory

-Shops now refresh when you enter a new floor

-Items can now be purchased from shops by clicking the entire slot, not just the item sprite.

-There is now a floor counter so you can see how deep into the dungeon you make it

-Armor and weapons now properly grant stats

We hope you'll give the game another try or maybe your first try if you haven't played it yet!

Let us know what you think we plan to continue development on this game for a while longer so any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Remember to open your inventory and equip the sword when you start ;)

Starting on tuesday I plan to post a daily series of posts detailing our experience and development through ludum dare check it out if you are interested.

Fullscreen option on web and builds for Mac/Linux

keep.png

Hey so, some people complained about how playing web was a bit awkward, so I just found that itch.io had an option for fullscreen (sorry) and now it's available. Also, I made some builds for MacOS and Linux, so people who doesn't use Windows can download it if they want.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-the-flame

Please make native builds if you can

I use macos, which as you can probably image, makes rating LD games a bit trickier since very few people provide builds for mac. You'd think the recent zealotry about web exports would have improved this situation, but in fact it's exactly the opposite. An increasing number of people seem to think that a web build is a substitute for cross-platform builds, and many people now only provide a web build, even though they are using an engine which supports cross-platform export. The net result, although I don't have hard stats to back this up, is that native mac and linux builds feel significantly less common now than they did a few years ago. Which is unfortunate, because the situation with HTML5 exports from major engines right now is really, really bad.

I can't claim to know why the situation with web exports is so bad (although I have a few guesses), but my experience has been that web games are extremely unreliable, to the point where I've started going straight for windows builds and trying them with wine first, because I actually have a better success rate with that than with running web exports. Seriously. At least 20% of the time they don't even load, if they do load it usually takes an unacceptably long time (much longer than just downloading and running the game), and if/when they finally get going there is quite often one or more game-breaking bugs with input, audio, rendering, or performance. I would much rather download a game and be plainly unable to run it, rather than waiting a full minute to find out whether it will load or not, playing for another couple minutes, and then suddenly being unable to continue because the mouse capture starts bugging out.

Y'all, please make downloadable versions of your games if possible! I am so tired of dealing with broken web games.

Another example of propagation delay of logic gates

logic_eye.gif

Focus on the NOT-gate. The Eye of Logic is commanding you!!!

This is what would theoreticaly happen if you connect gates in a circle. The input signal would propagate infinitely through the circuit. In reality an infinite propagation wouldn't happen, because every conductor has its own resistance which would weaken the signal every time it is passed from gate to gate. After a certain amount of times the signal would disappear because it lost too much energy (only, of course, if the gates don't have additional power sources^^).

Keep the Keep got updated to v.1.1! Also, would you like us to play your game?

Cover_1.1.png

Cheers guys,

It's been a fantastic week, as we've got so many great people to play Keep the Keep!

Thank you for being mighty supportive, helping us improve the game a lot!

Over the last week we've prepared a small yet meaningful quality update for you to check out:

  • The turn will be automatically over as you place a building, no more useless clicks
  • You can also skip the turn by pressing Space
  • The finish turn button is moved to the bottom centre to be a bit more accessible whenever needed
  • Tower buttons have icons now, making discerning them easy
  • Towers connected to the Reactor are now shown by an actual connecting wire with the energy flowing through
  • Fitting background music added as well

All of these little features have been requested by you, guys, and we are super happy to listen to our players.

It's just so incredibly inspiring to read all the feedback you've given us!

Have fun!

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-the-keep

P.S. If you'd like us to play your game and get some quality feedback (like we had from you), please leave the link in the comments - we will surely play it very, very soon!

Brellatrix - I'm still working on it.

Hey everyone! Just wanted to say that, as the title says, I'm continuing to work on Brellatrix. You know, that game I didn't finish for LD46? Yeah, that one.

Brellatrixemrec/em3.gif

Don't think I talked about the game's concept yet, but I'm pretty sure all of you have already picked up on it from the gifs and stuff. Basically, the idea is to accompany your friendly fire spirit, protecting him from the rain... with your Brella. The fire spirit, in return, can light forges, which serve as checkpoints as well as places to unlock new abilities and get upgrades.

Brellatrixemrec/em4.gif

I think a lot of people did similar things with this theme, with "keeping the fire alive", but... Let's just say that unique theme interpretations never were something I cared too much about.

As the game takes shape, it starts to feel more and more Momodora-esque. I guess that's the direction it wants me to take it?

I really want to release it as soon as possible, so I'll probably just finish the core mechanics, make a small world and keep the game pretty short. A lot of the things I make end up being falling into a scope-creep induced development limbo, and this is something I wanna avoid this time.

Anyways, here are some enemies :3

enemyemhedgehog.gif enemy/emscorp.gif enemyemsmall.gif enemy.gif flying.gif enemy/emreinforced.gif

They're all sorta wood-themed, mostly cos I wanted to add a fuel mechanic at first. Not sure if I'm gonna end up doing it tho, but I guess a consistent theme is still nice.

Anyways, this is the end of the actual information relevant to the game. You can stop reading this post now. I am serious.

Now that everyone had left, I'd like to take a moment to scream into the void a bit, if yall don't mind... Because I really need to.

I've... been in a really, really crap place lately. And not finishing an LD game really didn't help. Before that, I was able to actually keep myself un-depressed and productive by sticking to a routine get up early, have a quick breakfast, go to the gym, lift, go home and work on Animancy. But then... You know, the whole apocalypse thing happened, gyms closed, and even tho I'm still training at home and stuff, it... Just stopped giving me the same boost of energy, the same momentum to keep me being able to do useful things. But even that was sort of fine. What finally broke me was my hard drive dying on me. Yep, the one with all of the Animancy files. Long story short, the boot sector got corrupted, and I couldn't find a way to fix it myself. That basically destroyed me. I still hope to recover everything later tho, but for now it's not really an option.

I was really looking forward to LD, hoping it would get me back on track. And, even tho I didn't finish Brellatrix in time, in some way it still did, as right now I at least have a goal to work towards again, and I'm back to making consistent daily progress.

Where to now?

Okay, so making a game for LD has always been one of my dreams. I actually tried to participate five years ago using the only tool I knew - which was Scratch.

After my first glorious insuccess, I kept trying, always using Löve-2d, but pretty much failing each time. But this time it seemed perfect - I had enough experience to know that I could do it, and I had to stay home anyways, being italian in this unfortunate period. So I worked hard for three days straight, without doing practically anything else, and somehow at the end I actually had something to show! And waddyaknow, my friends and fellow Ludum Darers even seem to like it somewhat! It's been incredible.

It's also the first complete, playable game I ever made. And I really, really loved the experience, to the point that I know I'll want to repeat it. Actually, not just something made in 72 hours, but as an ongoing side project, with more time and serenity, slowly building something more complete and beautiful than what I could possibly imagine right now.

But something would be missing - you! Someone to play it. I would be happy knowing my future game found its way to just a couple hundred computers, or even less, but I wonder: would it? I know it's an oversaturated market and the volume of new games released is monstrous. So I ask you: do you sometimes have similar thoughts? What would you recommend doing? How could I get the lovely feedback that Ludum Dares offers, if I ever managed to finish a game? I just hope it's not something doomed from the start.

Thank you all for the feedback!

All the positive feedback we got (and constructive critism also :) ) made us decide to make How to Air a full blown release. With more planets, more puzzles, more creatures and dudes to interact with and more awesome hand-drawn graphics and animation. We will take the opportunity to already show some progress here as we actually already started too.

Firstly, rewritten it to Unity and also had some fun with shaders: aaaddd.gif

In the meantime, checkout our first LD entry which most likely will become a tutorial planet: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/how-to-air

Exo Keeper Explained

In Exo Keeper, you turn a barren, frozen world into a lush paradise by intoducing microbial lifeforms. The game is a science-based simulation of an ecosystem, inspired by Conway's game of life, SimEarth and Terraforming Mars.

There is a lot going on in this game, and not everything is clear at first glance. I wanted to explain the thinking behind it, so I put together this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1PgdhizHl0

And of course, here is the game itself: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/exo-keeper

Growing defense updated with animations!

Hey everyone!

Wondered how our game growing defense would have looked like, if the animations were done in time? Well - we were curious and added a separate updated version to our submission along with the original one!

Feature request: flagging suspicious behavior

This site should really have a button for reporting suspicious behavior, @pov.

Here's a list of games that all have no cover art or download link, were made by accounts created in the last week, and have all given exactly one rating: - lolol - Yesser - Cag0n - Not finished - Survive tild the last - Keep the rabbit alive! - The breuh

This seems very clearly like abuse, and I'd prefer not to have a repeat of LD43. I feel like an easy fix to this would be the following: - Add the ability to flag suspicious content, including a missing or broken download link - Do not allow games without a download link to enter the Jam or Compo (require they be submitted as "Unfinished") - Do not allow games without a download link to give ratings

Obviously this will not completely eliminate the ability to cheat, and LD has historically operated under the honor system, but it would at least prevent the most obvious forms of abuse that can significantly impact rating.

Okay, rant over. Enjoy the rest of the jam, everybody.

HTML 5 Canvas Element Manipulation

First of all, everything in my game is rendered onto a canvas. The game's main render target is a canvas, that's how we get moving graphics. But there are also a bunch of fun little tricks that I can do to make the game look more interesting by manipulating the canvas, and having the canvas render other canvases on top of it.

TitleScreen.gif

The most obvious example of this is the radar in your HUD.

Radar.gif

The radar display is an HTML canvas element that gets updated every frame. Each threat to the hive ship is rendered as a simple little colored dot onto the radar canvas, and then at the end of the frame the radar canvas is rendered onto the game's main render canvas. This is made especially easy due to the way I designed the camera class to work.

Basically each camera object has it's own canvas that it renders to when you call camera.DrawImage(). So you can have as many cameras as you want, active all at once, each rendering to their own canvas, and then at the end of the frame you can render each canvas of each camera onto the game's render canvas, or even onto another camera if you want.

Another way I utilize HTML canvas elements are in the "tutorial" screen. (I know it's not much of a tutorial, it was added in last minute)
In order to get the background graphic in the tutorial screen, I simulate one single frame of the game, render that entire frame to a canvas once, and then render text over that canvas of that single frame of gameplay.

Tutorial.png

There are really two parts that are using canvas manipulation here. First off is what I mentioned above, rendering the gameplay frame to a canvas and re-using that canvas, and then also the text rendering is using canvas manipulation techniques.
Each line of text is it's own canvas. I have a class that I created (originally for another project, but I modified it to work here as well) called SpriteFont. The way the the SpriteFont works is it takes a sprite off of a spritesheet for each letter of the alphabet based on data from a JSON file, in this case the spritesheet here:

defaultSpriteFont.png

And it renders the corresponding sprite to the canvas based on the current character in the string that it's generating a canvas image for. Basically, I feed the spritefont a string (and some other parameters), and it spits out an image with that string rendered onto it based on the characters in the spritesheet.
For example: If I call
spriteFont.GenerateTextImage("Hello, World!", 1, -1), the output is:
TextExample.png

And that's how text is rendered! For dynamic text however (like the player's score), I need to re-generate the image every time the value is modified. But since this is a relatively quick process, it doesn't cost too much CPU or GPU overhead so it isn't anything to worry about.

Another one of the major things that I use the canvas manipulation for, is procedurally generating the stars in the background. Basically at the beginning of each game I create a new StarField() object that when constructed, automatically generates a canvas image that is sprinkled with stars. The starfield object can be customized with varying density levels and different resolutions and when it's finished generating it looks something like this:
BG.png

This texture is then tiled and drawn to cover the entire viewport of the main camera.

And when you put it all together, you get this:

The Dark Cave - 2D Procedural Animation

Hi everyone!

I've had a few people ask about how I approached the procedural animation for the spider creature in my game so I decided to write a blog post about it!

It's quite lengthy and a few of the gifs were too big to post on here, so I've hosted it on my website instead.

It covers:

  • Rigging The Legs And Inverse Kinematics
  • Keeping the feet on the ground
  • Animation curves
  • Some code for movement

Unity Terrain is awesome

Unity terrain is a handy tool when it comes to game jams. It allows you to create a complex level layout directly in the editor and make improvements quickly avoiding export/import routine.

ld46_terrain.png

Some things I found useful: - Flatten all the terrain with height 10 before you start. So you will be able to lower some regions later. (unity does not allow to set negative height values, that is why). - Test your terrain size first by placing some placeholders for main game objects. It will be hard to change the terrain size later. - Iterate! Define raw layout first, then add some major details, place all main game object, playtest! Add all the small details in the very end. - Use 'Set Height' brush instead of 'Raise/Lower Terrain' to be more consistent on each iteration. - Use 'Smooth Height' to fix possible shading and 'sharp-polygons' issues. - Use 2-3 brushes max for each 'biome' to have a consistent style. - Add some quads/cubes/fog/clouds under your terrain for a better scene look. Sharp terrain edges are immersion breaking. - Have fun!
