Shoutouts for the Ominous Table

@savvu

@jcourt

@ctrble

And everyone else who has played our game!

You three played the most that I know of, and have reached the ominous table. @ctrble, im not actually sure whether you did or not, but you still spend quite a lot of time on the game, especially considering LD games are usually shorter.

These will be the only shoutouts I give for reaching the table, BUT if you complete the game, drop a screenshot as proof, and I'll put up a shoutout for you :)

Here's a link if you want to give it a shot HTMLIcon.png

Cheers everyone!

Do thumbnails update?

I'm thinking I should have made it more descriptive of the game than just a floating head. Now I've added the 'HTML 5' , it says a lot more right? This is my tribute to the original Firestarter and legend Keith Flint.

Here's my entry into the 'Keep the campfire alive' sub-genre for LD 46.

To Spoil or Not to Spoil?

I made a very simple game, Innocuous Pong, that can be completed in a couple minutes. The whole point of the game is to see how the game changes every few points until you get to a score of 15 to see the ultimate level. But I faced a conundrum: How do I get people to play the game without spoiling the later levels? It starts off very simply and I just show the initial level, hoping that'll be enough to entice people to play. But I also included a video with spoiler warnings to that people can see the later levels if they want:

Gunther’s Plant

Gunther’s Plant 😃 is a game about an old villager named Gunther.

Gunther wants his plant to grow and to be as big as it can, but those gosh darn villagers keep getting in the way!

It was a lot of fun creating a not-so-serious game that quickly devolves into madness

It has been a lot of fun seeing what people have come up with this jam & I'm really impressed with the quality of a lot of the submissions.

I think it was the first Ludum Dare I've participated in that I actually liked the theme for!

Moo Problems Moo Improvements

So Ludum Dare is done, but Moo Problems: 2021 is not. I've been taking time to digest feedback and even in some cases get a chance to watch other people play through streams.

And I've come up with three areas to improve. What I affectionately call me ty's (tees). Visibility, Difficulty, and Subtlety.

Visibility

So this issue was originally brought up during a stream I watched. Someone commented that the game seems like it would be easier from the perspective of the title screen which reveals the entire map. While, I wasn't certain that that would be true, I was curious. Trying it out locally, I realized that it did indeed give me an edge. Knowing when and where my cows were going to be in trouble next, made me able to act decisively. The major issue is that the majority of the art was made for a size that was much smaller. So, rather than redo a ton of work, I compromised. I increase the size of the camera slightly, decreased the space that the UI took up, and most importantly repositioned the two machines to be centered (top and bottom of the level) and added a second drop off point.

Screenshotem042620/em091420emPM.jpg Screenshot/em042620em091211/emPM.jpg

The increased visibility definitely gives an edge, but the horizontal collapse allows the user to focus on the verticality of the level which provides both a natural defense against the robots and allows them to more quickly close the gap between cows. Falling and jumping are definitely faster than sprinting across the map. The addition of the second drop off point made it where the user never really gets significantly off balance to the left or right of the level, so they are always able to recover after a dropoff before the next bot wave begins.

Difficulty

The game is hard. Like, really hard. I don't want to point fingers, but I blame the lack of balancing and effective playtesting by people other than myself. Okay, so let's dive into why. My first guess was that the bots just came too frequently, but after making changes to visibility, I realized that killing the bots actually wasn't that bad. They came at a frantic pace, for sure, but being able to react effectively to them made a world of difference. The difficulty had already been made easier. So I decided to get my family to play the game (begrudgingly) and extort USEFUL feedback (no Kyle, the game is hard is not constructive!) from them. This led to some more breakthroughs. Most people lost because of the secondary lose condition, you run out of money. People usually ignored the money until they reached the danger zone. Then it was too late for them to recover, literally running out of time as they sprinted that last bit of cheese to the delivery truck, or even worse, shifting focus entirely away from fighting until their cows died. So, I made it easier. I upped the initial starting money by 1500 to give people an earlier edge as they get familiar with the controls. And, I removed the second lose condition.

Screenshotem042620/em092808_PM.jpg

Money is still tied to using tools, but it can go to zero, even below zero. At this point, the user can't use their tools until they recoup their losses. This means that while they need to shift focus momentarily, the game isn't over. This allows people to move cows and adjust positioning in addition to collecting cheese and the like. They shift from offensive to being defensive and evasive. This prolongs the game for those that previously would have lost and gives a chance to recover from not adequately preparing in the early game when resource balancing is easier.

Subtlety

Subtle things in games go unnoticed. That's something that pretty much anyone that makes games, unfortunately, has to come to terms with. Especially, for games that need to be learned and played in a matter of minutes like games made for Ludum Dare. I did a lot of subtle things. Most of that subtlety focused around the grass seeds. Which of course, I had the wisdom to make the most expensive tool. Grass seeds were more effective on the higher platforms and cows could only recover health if they ate grass. Plus I added a tutorial step that had you throw down grass seed before you really needed to, and I watched many a person assume that something was broken as they wasted their starting money trying to get grass to grow. :slight_frown: So, I took away the subtlety. Grass seeds now would completely heal the grass with two throws. Easy to understand and visualize.

Screenshotem042620/em094711_PM.jpg

Now cows complain if they don't have grass. They'll occasionally spawn a little blurp that drives the user to drop seeds. Creating a more solid connection between the cows and the grass color. Removed the tutorial step, but made it where the damage was more noticeable when you milked the cows. That damage would then only recover (in safety before bots spawned) if you kept the grass green.

Screenshotem042620/em095412_PM.jpg

Additionally, I added more messaging around when you can pickup things with a similar E blurp. Previously, you were allowed to carry multiple of the same item or a cow all at the same time, but only in certain circumstances. The circumstances were maintained in your own head, and if you lost track of them you either made the game artificially more difficult or you wasted time spamming E on something that you wished that you could pickup. This little blurp will alleviate all confusion around that.

:smirk: Boom! Some changes. Also, new music, SFX, and VFX. OooooOOOooooOOO. And a stat page for if you win!

Gameplay Trailer - Rise of the Purple Slime

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj6b2LC6TEI

I made a gameplay trailer for rise of the purple slime! Now I can empathize with all of the streamers who played our game. Because it is a single-threaded fluid simulation in javascript and not fully optimized, our game is just barely able to eek out 60 fps even on relatively new hardware. Adding any additional load like streaming software immediately made the game almost unplayably slow. With some tweaking I was able to record but it was not easy!

Postmortem version released!

Thanks everyone for all the reviews!!

I was so happy with all the feedback that I felt like I needed to make a postmortem version addressing the issues most people had - specially regarding the difficulty of the game. So I rebalanced it, but also added some nice quality of life changes, like a pause menu and tips for the controls. There's also a difficulty selector. And a special mode for those who manage to beat at least 1 minute of Hard mode... I won't spoil it here, though! Go and take a look!

Offering a helpful base project for next time

Screen Shot 2020-04-26 at 11.03.57 PM.png

Every time I participate, I always wind up not quite finishing everything I want to. Besides having to skip a bit of my planned content, I usually run out of time to implement some simple quality-of-life and nice-to-haves.

There's some things that EVERY game should have. You should be able to quit the app. You should be able to pause it. There should be a credits, instruction, and volume adjusting section. There should be singleton management and audio mixers.

We're allowed to use any existing code base or tools we like, so I always said I'd get this stuff out of the way before the jam and just focus on the theme and gameplay. I say that every time.

Well, it just so happens I had enough spare time to get started on that (thanks, COVID-19)

I created a barebones Unity project with some of the essentials, I'll be using it myself on all LDJams going forward, and wanted to share it with you all as well.

Please let me know if you like it, if there's anything I could have done better, etc. If you make a game using it, please let me know!

Trying to think of ways to make players explore around more

We ended up with a game that's a bit more fun just to wander off and dance rather than do the objectives we tell people to do. Didn't realize this until very late in the jam so probably couldn't have fixed it but I think for next game definitely need to provide some way to imply more sandboxy moments. Maybe a bit of breathing room from the main objectives or telling people they can move or hide the UI telling them what to do so directly... I dunno.

We still need more ratings so check it out if you have time: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/how-to-keep-the-dance-floor-alive-answer-alcohol

Embedding an Unity WebGL game to a webportal (e.g. Itch.io)?

I just recently finished packaging up the WebGL template that I use for my games. It create a WebGL build that automatically resizes to the frame it's embedded in; even Itch.io's full-screen button works exactly as you would expect (i.e. full-screening the game). For a little preview, here's what the HTML loading screen look like:

If you want to take advantage of this improved template, instructions on how to install and utilize the feature is listed in the Github repo below: https://github.com/OmiyaGames/omiya-games-embed-webgl-template

First time in Ludum Dare

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/light

Introduction

I have to be honest. I always wanted to participate in Ludum Dare, but never had the time to do so. Now that we are in this quarantine situation, I finally managed to make a game for the jam. I was happy even though my game was not something that I wanted to make. I did participate in other game jams when I had a free weekend, but those were small jams, so I never got more than 5 reviews on my games. I thought that this will probably change in LD, but to my surprise my game faded away pretty quickly, then I realized that this is one, if not the biggest game jams in the world, so it's obvious why my game got so few plays and reviews. So what I came up with might solve this problem, and maybe help others who are beginners in game development. I'm going to show my journey of developing light.

Day 1

The funny thing is that I totally forgot about the jam. I woke up in the morning and I saw that LD46 just started. I checked the theme and began brainstorming. I knew that most of the jammers will make a top down shooter, so obviously I had to do something else. I came up with a system where you help someone or something to reach the end of the level. You do not control the main character. So in my game the main character is a light orb, and the end of the level is the sun. This means that the mission of this light orb is to reach the sun and bring back the light.

orb.gif

I achieved this effect by mixing a 2D sprite with a 3D sphere. The sphere is rotating based on a perlin noise. The texture was made with blender and its hand paint tool, so it really made this easy. I also added a trail effect so the player could really feel the direction where the orb is going. I wanted the light orb to follow a path, but how do I define the path? So I made a path editor.

path.gif You can find the source code here.

After this I began to draw some polygons that I used for the border of the map and the obstacles. Then I started to implement the drag and drop feature for the obstacles and the health system for the light orb. When I was building the level, I quickly realized that I will never finish it in time, because I spent half a day and I managed to make like 10 seconds of gameplay. The problem was that the orb had a fixed speed, so the level always took the same time to complete. At this point it was late, so I didn't want to develop the game more, because I would probably make dumb decisions that I will regret later. So I went to bed.

Day 2

When I woke up something great happened. I figured out a way to make the level in like milliseconds. Procedural level generation, right? So I opened up Unity and Visual Studio and began writing the generator for the map. I knew that I didn't had enough time to generate a true random map, so the path is always the same, but the environment is different. Basically I spawn in rocks along the path on both sides. The distance from the path was calculated with perlin noise (I really like perlin noise...), so sometimes the level gets tighter and wider gradually. At first I generated the whole map, but I realized that this will really kill the performance for the WebGL build. So I only generate segments. These segments are generated when the player gets close and destroyed when the player gets far enough. Here are some generated segments:

map.png Again, the source code is available here.

Later that day, I polished the game and published it to https://itch.io/. I thought I should make a good page this time for the game (again, expecting good traffic). I spent way too much time on the design, but I'm glad that I did. So after that, I began waiting to see how my game would do.

Conclusion

I had a great time developing the game. I will definitely participate in the next one, if I can. I thank everyone who played the game to this point. I really appreciate the comments and reviews that I got. I hope everyone is healthy and happy. Remember to stay at home and maybe if you want play my game

I will rate some other games too, if I have time, so that I could prioritize my game in the submissions.

Is this just me?

I know that in order for people to see your game you need to play other's people games and your stats go up.

When I played and rated about 5 games in a row today (some of them are made by the people who played my game )it didn't change the stats that much, maybe by 3 in the feedback given, and the smart/classic balance almost didn't change at all, am I missing something?

Thanks! :)

We really appreciate your feedback and try to make a nice game for each who helps us with reporting and cute feedbacks!

Just now our team work on the new update.

If someone sees something wat they think can be made better, just write to us here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/zoo-keeper.

Crafting YLLT and Post Mortem

Hello there! Wanted to toss together a nice post-mortem now that my cooldown period from the Jam is over. This theme was a pretty open book!

On our first session right after the theme was announced, we got straight to work. My friend, Lurkin, immediately came up with the idea for a monster-support game. Though, it originally began as a point-and-click title.

Design1.png (Screenshot snagged from Lurkin's stream at https://www.twitch.tv/lurkinmcclerkin)

We settled on kind of a multidirectional action-like game after some further discussion and I got to work with prototyping as some starting assets were whipped up. The first challenge was conveying to the player the status of the then-unnamed client. In an off-hand comment, Lurkin suggested a computer monitor.

HeatBar.gif

Nimmems whipped up an absolute bop of a song which was later freshened up and implemented. I think it went fairly far in setting the overall tone for what the game would eventually become!

After that, we determined that to "keep it alive," the best way to accomplish that is by providing needs. I prototyped a few "resource nodes" which could be picked up and deposited at the client's feet, and a bar increased. At this point the nodes meanings were undetermined, aside from the food bucket-and-dispense mechanic (which was always determined to be that sweet, sweet Gormel chili)

Proto1.png

We requested our friend Nowda put together some psuedo-antagonizing voice lines for the game which ended up going REALLY far in terms of subtly encouraging the player. It also is meant to drive home and confirm for the players assumptions as to what exactly they're supposed to do in the game to keep Mr. X alive. Turns out he had a voice filter that ended up being PERFECT for the cause, and by Build 4 things were beginning to really take shape.

Build4.png

By mid-day Sunday, the game was basically feature complete. I added several clues to the game in order to guide the player (The bucket silhouette at the chili pipe, for example) and we completed the fantastically drawn and animated PC reboot sequence. We needed to throw wrenches into the players' gameplay flow and not make the game boring!

bsod.png

The first prerelease build we put together late Sunday implemented the introduction cutscene which doubles as a sort of soft-tutorial for the player via posters on the wall - something that I had seen in several games I've been playing lately. It's a clever way to deliver nonintrusive "lessons" but I didn't have time to make it less...blatant? Either way, Prerelease 1 implemented some more room layout changes as well as freshening up the PC's player screen to be clearer.

Prerelease1.png

And then... art happened.

Lurkin fired off what I can only describe as a barrage of absolutely amazing art and level layout changes that fully nailed what the game would become. It really hammered home the aesthetic of the game!

We buttoned up the title screen and game over screens really late on Monday night (after my day job) and managed to submit in time after fixing a few really nasty bugs (all of them having to do with that damn chili bucket. I swear...) Unfortunately, a few bugs remain (such as the layering issues on a few resource nodes and some funny collision nonsense with the upper part of Mr. X's head. But that's the joy of game jams!

Thanks for taking the time to read and follow our progress! If you haven't already, you can check out You Live Like This? and vote! We're all doing our best to get out there and rate other games as well.

Until next time!

The Dark Cave - 2D Procedural Animation

Hi everyone!

I've had a few people ask about how I approached the procedural animation for the spider creature in my game so I decided to write a blog post about it!

It's quite lengthy and a few of the gifs were too big to post on here, so I've hosted it on my website instead.

https://www.tomstephensondeveloper.co.uk/post/2d-procedural-animation-in-unity

It covers:

  • Rigging The Legs And Inverse Kinematics
  • Keeping the feet on the ground
  • Animation curves
  • Some code for movement

SpiderIK_Optimised.gif

I currently have a few more tutorials underway which I can't wait to share with you all! A few things on 2D lighting and some other bits I learnt during the jam. Is there anything in particular you'd like to see?

Let me know if you find it useful or if you have any questions!

Dungeon Gen

I didn't use this system in my game, but the other month I made a post about procedural dungeon gen for those interested. Is this something you tackled during the jam or previously? I'd love to know how you approach dungeon gen.

Displacement: A block pushing and pulling puzzle game

Displacement is a Sokoban-style block pushing and pulling game where you activate switches and clear paths to reach the exit before your character runs out of energy. When you push or pull, every block vertically and horizontally aligned with the player moves. This means you really have to think a few steps ahead when trying to solve puzzles. The gif below is an example of a level about half way through the game.

Any feedback greatly appreciated because I may be looking to polish this up or even expand it. Thanks!

Why do you participate in game jams ?

I would like to know your motivation to participate in game jams if you have time to share.

For me it's because I just love making games and growing as a game designer. I like every part of the development : designing the game, making the visuals, the music and the programming. I like doing everything. I could spend my life making games or prototypes like I'm doing and I'd be happy. Because it means becoming a better game designer, better artist, better programmer, better composer, better sound designer, all the roles that inspires me. I want to challenge myself and practice more to hone the craft.

Instead of just straight-out plugging your game, have you considered maybe...

  • ...providing additional value with your post? Maybe a post mortem. Or a making of. Write a short tutorial about something you did in your game. Inform us of your grand plans for the future development. Gives us a short list of your favourite LD46 games. Or something else! You're creative, right?
  • ...offering to play other people's games? You can obviously invite them to play yours too, but try to not push it too much in the foreground!
  • ...leaving lots of detailed feedback on other's peoples games? I bet they'll play your game too!

I hope this post can inspire you a bit on how to get eyes on your game while also giving back to the community.

And thanks to all of you who are already doing that - it's what makes me refresh the front page, and what makes being part of this community so great!

Looking for a game to play? Also a look back into my LDJAM history

For the past 3 LDJAM's (Ever since LD42) I haven't been able to finish a game. Well this time around I chose an idea with a HUGE scope and..... Finished it! Why? I think it was because for my last completed jam (LD42) it fell on summer vacation, so I had no school or sports. The next three I lost a lot of time to school and sports, this time. Well. I had a LOT more time. So either I've been lazy the past three jams, picked too large of a scope the past three jams, did'nt have enough time the past three jams, or all three.

If anyone is looking for a game to play I have a few

favorites below or/and you can check out my strategy

Station Keeping - Now with Tutorial

It is all about managing the complexity.

Nodoby could play the game I've designed during the jam. What I've considered to be simple mechanics turned out to be not that simple after all. And it takes time and effort to guide the player through major systems of a space station and explain how they work. It was hard to figure that out just looking at the screen.

Amazing, that even with those severe limitations, some fellow jammers spent time experimenting and figured out how to play... No thanks to me :slight_frown:

Now, finally, I've managed to deliver an actual in-game tutorial.

So play an updated version of Station Keeping - I hope it'll provide much better experience.

trade.gif

I'm frustrated, that the tutorial hasn't been included in the initial version of the game. But, realistically speaking, I've spent 3 days to create that tutorial alone. Maybe not in the "jam-mode", but still, it is time consuming to create a sequence of predictable and verifiable steps. No way I could have managed to squeeze that into the initial jam version.

So I'm happy, that at least now, it is exactly the way it is supposed to be

You've killed with guns. You've killed with swords...

Now learn how to kill with rain! In "The Last Guardian" you can turn the weather itself onto your enemies. Try it here (there is a Web version, as well as Windows, macOS and Linux): https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/the-last-guardian

Garden Royale Making Off (Part 2)

This is the second part of a series or posts based on our project GARDEN ROYALE, which got a bunch of positive reviews (many thanks!). You can read the previous article here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/garden-royale/garden-royale-making-off-part-1

And play and rate the game on this link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/garden-royale

2e173.png

On this particular article, I will explation the technique I use for creating the GARDEN ROYALE graphics, which hopefully can help you to accelerate when doing of pixel art or placeholder visuals for your games.

game_title-px-part2.png

MY TECHNIQUE: PIXEL COLLAGE

The core of the technique can be summarized as "creating a photographic collage, and then pixelizing it through a filter".

Since this methodology skips a lot of work of drawing and coloring, it allows create graphics really fast and it allows to get a passable quality even if you have low art skills (like me: I can't draw...).

The main handicaps is that it's a bit limited on what you can achieve, specially if you don't want to invest tons of time.

Usually, I divide the creation of an asset in 3 stages: COLLAGE, FILTERING AND CLEANUP. process.png

STEP 1: COLLAGE

Usually, photo editing tends to take a lot of time and you've to be quite skilled at it to avoid it looking fake.

Fortunately, since the collage is going to go through an agressive process of loss of quality, you can get away with really bad photo collages, as long as the shapes are clearly readable.

As an example of what kind of things you can pull of, check how I just pasted a blanket on top of a picture of an abandoned hospital near my city... and it kind of worked: art11.png

Another example: a picture of a dragon toy, a photo from a friend on a medieval recreation and a shutterstock background... and you've got a very basic set of rpg assets in less than 15 minutes: art44.png

STEP 2: PIXELIZATION

There is a wide range of commercial and freeware tools that you can use transform your pictures to pixel art, though I personally recommend Pixelator (http://pixelatorapp.com/) and PixaTool (https://kronbits.itch.io/pixatool).

In my own experience, Pixelator is way faster to get results of a decent quality. On the other hand, PixaTools has a bigger amount of customization options and you can get some amazing results as well if you spend some time, even though I've never been able to make them feel as any other thing than pixelated photos.

art33.png

On both tools, you will want to focus primarily on the pixelization factor and amount of colors in the palette, which will determine how big the pixels will be, and how much chromatic info will be removed.

Some best practices I've found while using these tools are:

---> Use the same parameter presets for all pictures of the same kind, so they look of a similar style. I usually create one configuration for the characters, another for objects, and another for backgrounds.

---> For characters and items, I find that a black outline improves a lot the overall readability.

---> If you are going to do multiple variations of the same element (i.e. animations, facial expressions) save the palette so the program doesn't start modifying the colors.

---> These filters manage really bad pictures that have small elements with a very different color. you can break that picture down in several pictures, and then later patch them together.

---> In my humble opinnion, anything with more than ~40 colors on the palette starts to look like an edited photo rather than pixel art.

Here's some examples (on Pixelator), so you see what I'm talking about: art55.png

STEP 3: CLEAN UP

Manually reviewing the assets and polishing them is the most repetitive and time-consuming part of the entire process, but the only way to make those low quality abominations become truly unique and appealing, and remove any trace of them looking like a photo.

I've found it's particularly hard to obtain quality character faces without spending quite some time on this stage, but if you do it they really get personality. (Original pics from shutterstock): art66.png

Another cool thing that can be achieved, is that you can generate sprites that look similar to famous or recognizable characters. A satiric magazine wanted to do a boxing minigame about a famous politician from my country... so I granted them their wish: art22.png

I hope this has been helpful for you. Let me know if you experiment with this technique or if you have advices on how I could get the same (or better) results faster.

Salut!

@JBDev, Nyameh and Tebayoso.

Our experience

Hi everyone, Ludum Dare 46 has been an awesome experience for me and @nuanda79. An occasion to work, learn and have fun. Our strategy was to opt for creating a simple but functional game. The fear of being too ambitious and not being able to finish was too great. However we are satisfied and we consider our game a good result for non-professionals in the gaming field and also a good starting point to take it to a higher level. We have learned many things from this experience and we will face the next opportunities with more awareness. You can see a short video of the gameplay and if you want to try it, here it is: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/feed-the-fire-2

Soundtrack - Ableton Project

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ngLS2Nb4tc The GAME: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-ivan-trotsky-alive

For this game I just wanted to use some simple instruments. The game itself is very simple and funny so for the main melody I picked funky electronic bells from Ableton's built-in Operator. For that reverby sounds in the background I used Dusky Swells preset from the same Operator with additional compression and delay. Somewhere in the middle there is a solo and the chords appear. Their sound is just a samples of classic Rhodes with some u-he Satin processing for that warbly vintage sounding. In the last track there are keys playing in the background made with TAL U-No-LX, which is probably Roland's Juno-106 emulation. The keys are the Mellow Piano sound from the juno factory patches back in the 1964. Piano is the Grand Piano from the Ableton's Sampler with Izotope Vinyl over it for that Lo-Fi vintage sound again. For the drums I sampled Afrique - House of rising funk and layered them with drum samples from old-school roland drum-machine cr78. Some vinyl dirt in the background and that's it!
