Ludum Dare 46April 17–20, 2020

If you used Godot...

Please Make a Web Build!!! :D

Not only is it super easy to do, but it will open your game up for way more people to play it. It isn't complicated at all, and adding new builds of your game (as long as you don't change the code) is allowed in Ludum Dare! If you can't figure it out, here's a nice tutorial I found: https://youtu.be/Vc6Ce1G84qA

New port - HTML5!

Eclipse - Chip Hunt is available now in Itch.io to run on browser!

Is a bit late, but at least you can play without download.

Is my first HTML5 project, hope to get some feedback :)

Go out there and review games!!!

There's still lots of time to review games, over eleven days atm!

I had stopped reviewing because I've already done like 70 or so, but @slimbun told me to review more so... I guess I will!

I'll play any games commented.

It might take a while because my country still has school online, but I'll try to do them all today

Post Your Game in a Comment = i will play and rate it.

It's a holiday here. This weather sucks. So plenty of time to play. Write your game in the comments and I will play and rate it.

behind the scenes I - animation

Hello everyone~

For the first time I animated sea creatures for our game 'Perish alive' and actually had so much fun with it that I spend too much time trying to make a smooth movement.. As a result, we didn't manage to add anymore enemies.. haha (sorry, team )

jellyfish-GIF-low-quality.gif

Nonetheless, I decided to share the 'attack animation cycle' of the jellyfish which consists of 12 frames, all handrawn..(<--- totally over scoped) Each frame is consistent to the one before and after it thus creating a 'flow' which is what makes it look smooth and not jittery.

Have you checked Perish alive?

The PATH : New ennemies

bRAs4s.png

Hi everyone, The Boredom Ministy is proud to take you with us on the journey of the creation of "THE PATH".

You can play the game here and don't forget to rate us !

promo_3.gif

Ok, so now we have most of the ennemies, I added some land tiles, and I started figuring out how all of it will fit together visually.

We both have talked about the game play and the behaviour of all the new elements. we've had some fun ideas. This is going to work.

Tomorrow, we'll concentrate on props... That's going to be a big one. Lots of stuff to design to dress the sets. Fun work too though.

Here are the new things we've got so far:

So looking for 10 browser games to play and rate today, please link your games?

coverImageGnat46.png

Trying to rate and play 10 games a day, and it's getting harder/slower to find new Web Browser games to try.

So being lazy I thought I would just ask you directly to link to your browser playable game and I will play and rate the first 10 today. Any additional ones will be rated tomorrow.

PS Have you tried my game https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/gnat46

Behind the scenes of my procedural world generation

World Gen.gif

The world generator is built upon multiple octaves of perlin noise, which is simply multiple layers of noise stacked together to make a more detailed pattern. By stacking noise textures of different scales, you can make some really interesting patterns.

The generator begins by creating a random path, and then blocks are drawn in along that path. That's why the first step kinda looks like a brush that's drawing the world. The shape of the brush at any point is based off of perlin noise.

In the next step, big strips of terrain are removed, which breaks up the large islands into smaller, more interestingly shaped islands.

The next step has some interesting design behind it. It's important for the player to be able to get from any point in the map to any other point. Since we just removed large strips, and since islands can have some distance between them, the generator has to add smaller islands, which are like stepping stones between the big islands. The generator places the small islands to maximise the amount of the map that the player can reach.

The game then adds detail by making islands droop down a bit and by removing weird hiccups such as lone blocks floating in the air.

A colour palette is then generated, and the game sets the colour of the separate islands. It's kinda like a fill bucket was used to colour parts of the world.

Finally, the game generates a set of points that encapsulate the generated area, and place the swirly black clouds on those points. That way you'll be surrounded by these clouds that establish the boundaries of the world.

Padding 30.png

It might sound simple, but I'm very happy with the way it came together. Those few steps produce a lot of really interesting complexity, I've seen valleys and mountains, cliffs, caves and so many other weird and wonderful features. I mentioned perlin noise earlier, and boy is there a lot of it. There are many noise textures generated, which determine things like the 'brush' size, the density of islands, the shape of the removed slices and so much more. These different textures add a nice amount of complexity, and really increase the variety of worlds that can be generated. It is worth noting that the generator doesn't always make a perfect world first try. If there isn't enough blocks placed, or if all the blocks are placed in a few big landmasses, then the generator will scrap what it's got and try again.

Padding 30.png

Worlds2.gif

Padding 30.png

So yeah, that's roughly how the world in my game is generated. Hopefully this was informative, if you've got any questions, please leave a comment and I'll answer. Also, if you're interested in giving the game a go, you can play it here. It was actually really interesting making the first gif of the post, the slowed down generation revealed so many interesting bugs, which oddly enough, ended up making the environments even more interesting. I also really enjoyed making the world generator, it was awesome when I finally had the generator complete and could tweak all the different values to perfection. Thank you for reading! :v:

LIFE:anti-viral still 100% stable (as a simulation!)

I was always fascinated by emergent behaviours in simulations, so trying to adapt a set of hard and fast rules to create a game that looks chaotic was a challenge I wanted to take, especially as author of the first mathematically pure simulation game "Life" (John Conway) sadly passed away from Coronavirus just before the Jam started.

LIFE:anti-viral is a 100% stable simulation - the idea is to build a Tower Defence attack/defend game like Clash of Clans where we can replay any game just by knowing how fast, when and where a player inserted a simulation particle. So the simulation is completely repeatable, yet creates crazy chaotic movements that are different every time you play, due to you as the random factor! We can still replay all of that knowing only a tiny amount of data, even though there can be 1000s of pieces in play.

To make your own levels we included a full level designer that allows you to simulate what will happen to your level before a player interacts.

d&p.gif

Then you can play your level or share it with others...

BatteryLife got fixed UI scaling and now runs in your browser

Hello everyone!

While playing other LD46 games I was haunted by a bug which caused UI and maze of our game be cut while playing on other dimensions/aspect rations than FullHD.

Letterboxing didn't work well with PixelPerfect camera and trying to scale all game objects and child objects threw physics completely off balance - although I found out that slowing down a robot to snail pace might be actually fun... especially with low battery level ->backlog.

Anyway, I got finally idea to move camera with the robot instead and call it a day. Good that should be simple, right? Well, not necessarily. At best camera would shiver like crazy, I doubt anyone would like this seizure inducing feature.... than it struck me! Wait a sec, if I move camera around and camera is parent to virtually all other objects in the scene.... crap! Fixed, case closed. Still it's not perfect, UI scales nicely but maze wouldn't scale but that's for later. By the way if anyone has any idea how to tame this please let me know in comments.

So now official change-log: - New version is available as HTML5 - UI scales to screen size - Camera moves around with the robot

Windows version is still the original LD46 submission.

So enjoy the game, please remember to play it on full screen, feedback is welcome!

My Fav Games So Far

I have played some games through rating and wanted to share some of the games I really enjoyed

What The Firetruck

 • NOTE: this one doesn't have 20 ratings yet

 • Really fun twin stick shooter game where you are frantically trying to put out fires. The gameplay loop is really nice on this one and I found myself playing multiple playthroughs.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/what-the-firetruck 2de55.png

Remnants

 • You keep the ship/crew alive in this fun card game. I love card games and what's funny is that I didn't even really realize how the game worked at first, but I was having fun still. I don't quite understand how they pulled off this magic haha. Like how do you have fun but at the same time have no idea what you're doing lol.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/remnants Screen Shot 2020-05-01 at 10.22.05 AM.png

Catastrophe: Wildfire Firefighters

 • Ok so second game on the list about putting out fires, now this one is more strategy where the previous one was arcadey. I really liked the idea behind this one, you have to use real methods that actual firefighters use to control forrest fires. I am not the best at the game but I really thought it was executed well. I believe the devs want to continue working on the game

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/catastrophe-wildfire-firefighters 32633.gif

Keep It Powered

 • A cute puzzle platformer where you need batteries to stay powered. Have you ever played a game where you kept failing but were also super motivated to keep pushing on and beat it. That's how I felt with this game. It's execution was very smooth and the puzzles were fun. I did make it all the way through but levels 13 and 14 wow those ones were very hard. You had to think about it and figure out how to manage your battery power, and these levels almost try and trick you into thinking which path is the way to victory but after many failed attempts I learned the proper way.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/keep-it-powered 2c46b.png

Leap Of Faith

 • this one has you launching a fish around and keeping it alive by keeping it in the water. I didn't complete this game but I had a ton of fun playing it. I tried several times but just couldn't get past a certain part. It has lots of interesting things the fish can land in.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/leap-of-faith 31193.png

Little Bit of Self-Promo

title.gif

Hey guys, I've been having a blast trying everyone's games but I tend to fall into the trap where instead of playing a bunch of games really quickly and rating them, I get super into playing them and end up spending a bunch of time playing one game before I move on to the next. And as a result this means I don't get much coolness points (even though I've still played and rated many more games than my game has ratings).

So I figured, you know. I lil bit of self promo never hurt anyone. Anyway, feel free to try it out if this looks like a fun game to you :)

Vestige Post-Jam Update #4

Finally finished the basic attack animation! It was a little tricky to figure out, but eventually I managed to get it where we are happy with it. I made the sword aim wherever the cursor is, while sticking to the player and matching his motion. Needs some tweaks here and there, but overall I think it's better than the single-frame rectangle it used to be! Time for combos next! basic attack.gif

Have a nice day!

Thanks for you feedbacks!

It was our first Ludum Dare, we wasn't sure that we would finish and deliver our game... But here we are! Currently over 20 ratings & warm feedbacks! Thank you so much!

In conclusion, we're happy with how we managed to plan our time and build strategy, focusing on core mechanics first, and then build up other nice-to-have features&visual. But for next Ludum Dare, we should definitely pay more attention to the audio part as well as adding more gameplay elements to it.

Post-LD version of my game finally done!

Hey everyone. Since participating in LD46 I've been working hard on building a first proper release of my game The Adventures of Eggbert. Getting to this stage was something I thought physically impossible just a few years ago.I hope you'll give it a whirl. The list of changes is huge. I've always dreamed of having a game on Steam so the game is in review at the moment, due to release there in a couple of weeks (presuming the game gets approved).

I'll be writing a Post Mortem about the whole process as well, in an attempt to give back too.

Thanks for all the interesting game experiences so far everyone.

Advise the King Update

Hello all!

I've made an update to Advise the King, a chess-based deck builder.

2.0.jpg

The aim of this update was to expand on the concept of the game, adding a little more opportunity to strategize with your hand. To that end, I've added two new cards that can help you plan for the future a bit during a match.

I've also added two new board features to add a little more interest to the board. The first is chests that can be destroyed to add more potential rewards to your reward chest. I'm also experimenting with "energy tiles" that can be landed on to immediately fill your energy. It seems to provide an occasional opportunity to strategize for a "big turn".

Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

Version 0.2 - Post-Jam Update 1

New Cards

 • Storehouse - Draw a card. Place one card from your hand on top of your draw pile - 0 energy
 • Promote - Choose an action card from your hand. Promote it one tier for the durration of this match - 1 energy.

New Features

 • Chests now exist on boards. Destroy them before ending the match to add a card to your rewards chest.
 • Energy squares now exist on boards. land on them to fill your energy immediately.

Fixes & Tweaks

 • Fixed a bug that would throw an error on some monitor resolutions.
 • Minor changes to all levels to promote new features.
 • Spacebar can now be used to end your turn if you're out of moves.
 • Tweaks to card art to help differentiate between a jump move and a slide move.

please help ! the ship is dying...

this is not even my game. few people have heard of this one.. its about keeping the ship alive and it is kind of an MMO?

the goal here is to plant trees that provide us with O2 and we can survive the year to reach our destination.

all players can help planting and taking care of trees. the game is on twitch. so you just go to the page and type one of these commands: !plant !water !cut ; followed up by the cell name that you want to do; a1 or c3 for example

anyway the ship is sad now and dying... lets keep it alive. we need more players! Kaptowka.png

also give these guys some ratings. they deserves it: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/dom

to play directly go to twitch : https://www.twitch.tv/kaptowkagame

few last notes: - there is shortcuts for commands like !p, !w, and !c - you can queue multiple commands by doing something like this : !w a1 a2 b2 b3 - leafless trees are dead . you can cut these. dont try to water them.

Lets keep it alive!

Viva La Revolution! Thank you everybody for your feedback.

The game has reached and passed 20 review! I cannot express how grateful we are for this result. Thanks so much everybody!

We have heard your feedback, and are planning to work on our flaws in future projects and events.

If you have not already played the game, check it out here. We are looking forward to get more feedback and suggestions from you guys.

This whole journey has been amazing, as it was our first entry to the Ludum Dare series of GameJams. It was really fun to join the community and create a game in such a short period of time, given our inexperience as game developers. It was stressful, but we would do it again in a heartbeat!

Again, we would like to thank you for your support and we are looking forward to future events and GameJams.
Take care.

Working on postjam version of Field Hospital.

We're overwhelmed with received feedback! Thanks to everyone who played our game.

You spoke and you were heard. The first thing we added was a feature to inspect several patients' cards before making a decision who to treat and whom to refuse.

As our game is narrative-driven we decided to add a notebook for player to collect valuable items and important information regarding main plot of the game.

2020: A deathride for humanity

On April 29, 2020 1998 OR2 just missed Earth by few miles. https://twitter.com/sumitsaurabh/status/1255761496774078465. Look at how Earth could have just had another phase of an asteroid hitting it and the species alive on the planet dying. Keep Earth Alive by dodging the asteroids by playing Earth 2.0. Hope you like it(and keep earth alive)!!

Have you met I I R O yet?

I I R O is a surreal "horror-story" that utilizes stop-motion photography.

Pahka_LOW.gif

I I R O is also the name of this gallant mask, the star of the game.

As you can see, he can be a bit shy sometimes...

output2.gif

Flower3.gif

I I R O features four separate mini-games, but in order to access you'll have to solve a nightmarish puzzle first!

You wouldn't exactly call this your average game, to be honest...

Walk.gif

Mundane characterization will probably not do it proper justice, so it's something you'll have to experience yourself.

It might not be for everyone, but you might also end up loving it!

Many have.

GHOSTVAC post-mortem - masterclass in fakery and illusion

This is a post-mortem/ behind the scenes of my game GHOSTVAC .

ghostvac.gif

THEME

First things first, I did let the theme get lost in development. The game was initially about feeding balls to a creature via the hatches, to keep it alive. The gameplay has stayed exactly the same, you still have to feed the hatches before time runs out, but arcade games live and die on how easy they are to pick up. I thought the metaphor of busting ghosts was more apt. So the story the game tells isn't about "keeping it alive", but I'm ok with it. I prioritized gameplay over metaphor.

Re: people who ask whether I copied an existing machine: I would swear that there's nothing like this game in any amusement hall, BUT, searching through my reference folder this week, I found:

THIS

It's a two player game where you score goals on each other using 2 blowers! It's even ghost themed, and it's obvious to me that I totally stole those flat-bottomed ghosts that are part ball and part air hockey puck!

I was obsessively researching electromechanical games a few months ago, and it obviously stuck with me subconsciously!! That said, my game is significantly more sophisticated and gameplay is very different, so no, nothing like this exists anywhere, to my knowledge.

Game Design breakdown:

A sort of pinball-ish, sort of shooter-y, sort of tractor-beam type arcade physics gameplay. I wanted to realize the fantasy of busting ghosts like Ghostbusters or Danny Phantom. I felt it would be fun to make it a two step process: get the ghost, then a trap opens, then you have a limited time window to shoot your ghost in there. Two peaks of pleasure: successfully sucking and trapping a ghost, and then managing to exterminate it by successfully aiming it into a trap.

The ghosts would have to move around a bunch, to provide a moving target. If I had time (I did!) I wanted to implement a boss with a higher difficulty obviously, but also a slightly different mechanic: this time hatches open up and close automatically and randomly. Those same hatches that used to be ghost traps, now represent vulnerable spots of the boss.

Concept art:

EWASVk_WkAARvhG.jpg

Suction is an illusion!

I went about implementing a "suck" behavior. Now, real-world vacuums do not suck that far! My solution was to "engineer" one blower fan that blows uniformly through 20 small holes arranged in a half circle opposite the player. Each of those holes opens via a circuit, depending on the angle of the ghost vacuum. Probably a potentiometer, or maybe even more primitive, through 20 distinct contacts on the rotating vacuum side. The effect looks like sucking ghosts, even though it's actually ghosts being blown towards the player.

blowers.gif

The same blower fan also periodically diverts some air to blow away from the player, so that the ghosts move around on the playfield.

But the illusion of sucking doesn't stop there: When a ghost is near the vacuum, it really does suck it in (I emulated a suction force, by making it dependent on the inverse square of the distance - i.e. it gets weak at even tiny distances from the source).

When a ball is close enough, a sensor triggers a magnet at the tip of the vacuum, so the ghost is locked. Then, in order to shoot the ghost fast, a kicker is activated that sends it flying. Just blowing it away wouldn't be half as snappy or consistent or satisfying. So that called for more fakery.

Also to keep the balls from flying into the hatches on their own, I implemented a bump/ ridge in front of the hatches - i.e. a barrier for most balls, unless they're moving fast enough to overcome the bump.

To keep the balls from spilling out of their traps, the back half of the playfield is a platform that's angled back: I apply a small force toward the top of the playfield on any captured ball. When the game resets, the platform is raised, and the slope is enough to send the balls toward the player and out of the traps.

It looks extremely simple, but it would probably be expensive to manufacture: there are sensors for the balls going in and out (so that the game knows when to score or reset). To stay realistic and keep "costs" down I didn't implement flashing lights on the playfield or other gimmicks. Those games usually rely on cheap segmented monitors (already a Dot Matrix Display is luxury), and one core mechanical gimmick (the blower).

I think it's a fascinating field of game design, and I pride myself for thinking things through and implementing real-life mechanics.

3D is also an illusion!

Then there's the fake 3D using sprites. That was a lot of work to figure out, especially since I made this in a 2D engine. The source code gives it away, you can have a look. But it's basically projection math. Dividing by Z to convert "flat world" coordinates to "projected" coordinates. Then the flat world can be used to design a playfield in 3D

2D playfield for designing and testing:

playfield.png

3D playfield built on the 2D playfield. For displaying the game at a more immersive angle:

3D table23.png

2D physics on the right, sprites on the left:

ghostvac2.gif

The one and only sprite used for the ghosts. They get Z-sorted, based on the ghosts' Y coordinate, and also scaled depending on Z.

ghost small.png

The combined shadow and reflection sprite, that follows the ghosts around, on a separate layer (i.e. canvas) with universal 50% layer opacity:

ghost shadow.png

The ghostvac plastic nozzle is a prerendered 60-frame animation. Each of those 60 frames corresponds to one of 60 degrees that the ghostvac is constrained to.

Untitled-8.gif

The prerendered plastic border was sliced and placed on top or behind the ghost balls, accordingly:

3D table27.png

The Dot Matrix Display

Electromechanical games, including pinball machines, often rely on DMDs to give out player feedback. It was surprisingly easy to get this one to work:

 • I made a 48x16 pixelart gif
 • I scaled it up x10 (bilinearly, i.e. blurry and janky - it helps the effect)
 • I overlayed a grille with transparent holes (exactly 48x16) on top of it
 • I added some horizontal blur using a shader

The reflection is just the same sprite, set to 50% opacity, flipped vertically and blurred. It doesn't even need the grille overlay, it looks fine as is.

BOSSintro.gif

boss-laughing.gif

DMD monitor overlay-01.png

DMD-gameover-and-demo.gif

I also made a numeric sprite font, for the time (and maybe in future for scores) time.gif big number pixelfont.png

Known Bugs

thanks to all the feedback from players, I'm now aware of a timer bug. It doesn't always trigger, and seems to only trigger on slower systems or browsers. I did however track it down, and it's completely because of my sloppy spaghetti code: I'm not setting the enum state of the game properly. And because of that I had to use lots of if-statements, which is exactly the sort of thing the state machine design pattern is there to avoid. I'm still debugging this. In any case, don't emulate my mistakes!

Further Development

The things to add to this game are definitely: score and a survival mode-type gameplay. Maybe a bonus mode where you freely shoot hatches. Nothing that requires more mechanical gimmicks! It's the limitations that make this kind of machine attractive to design for.

Also an operator's settings menu, including highscore reset and timer difficulty adjustments, which also double as accessibility options. Disabled players love arcade challenges too, and giving a leeway of a few extra seconds to make the game beatable by everyone is high on my list.

Thank you for playing!

What you are seeing above is a working half-adder. Said curcuit can add two binary signals. The upper gate is the sum of both inputs and the gate beneath is the carry signal. Carry signals represent the overflow to the next digit of multi-digit addition.

Overstock OST is out!

The Overstock OST is finally out! You can get it here.

Or you can listen to the game track right here :smirk:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPzq57hcVOw

This was the most amount of tracks I had ever made for any jam. Even though half of it was dedicated to ending tracks, I think it's the small details that make it challenging but rewarding.

My team's game, Overstock, finally passed 20 ratings, which is a relief. I hope to play more games this week as well.

Curse Of Uddh - Now with one less bug!

Screen01.png Ahoy y'all! Our lovely coder took some time to dig out and fix the main annoying bug from our game:

Curse Of Uddh

We added a Hotfix version on itch, it prevents the character you escort from getting stuck, enjoy!

Next step may be building a Web version, and integrating the comics in the game (there's even an ending!). Should that happen, we'll keep you posted...

8-bit Soul Eater - Now with Linux support

8BitSoulEater.png

We have now added Linux support and will hopefully soon have Mac support.

We have also fixed some bugs, and added some of the changes based on the feedback.

Don't worry, we still have the initial Ludum Dare release available, but you should try the new release as it makes the game feel better.

Peek 2020-05-03 01-42.gif

Also, we do need some more ratings, so if you trying to decide which game to rate next, how about this one :)
